fix(web): keep retention controls stable while editing days - #26335
Changing retention days resizes the number field across digit boundaries and makes “Mixed across selected machines” flash while individual machines update. Brief agreement between machines can also make an existing warning disappear and reappear.
Keep a fixed five-character input width and use the existing AnimatedHeight wrapper for both rows, following the Device Hub settings pattern. Stabilize each row’s mixed status with the existing useDebouncedValue hook: it must stay changed for 300 ms before appearing or disappearing. Scope the debounced value to the selected environment IDs so a warning cannot carry over to a different selection. Values and saves remain immediate, and the rows collapse fully when the warning clears.
vp test run apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.browser.test.tsx — 2 tests passed.
vp run check:changed upstream/main — formatting, lint, both Knip checks, affected-package typechecks, and storage browser tests passed.
git diff upstream/main...HEAD --check — passed.
The new regression fails against the previous implementation. It covers brief appearances and disappearances, persistent differences, independent rows, and changing selected machines with a fake clock.
Live before/after verification used real controls in Chrome with two isolated server environments on one Mac. Approximately 260 ms differences and agreement gaps no longer toggle either warning; persistent differences still appear and clear. Rapid edits across 9 ↔ 10 days keep the field width and horizontal position unchanged. The actual macOS desktop app was also opened and its maintenance controls checked.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Keeps retention controls stable by fixing input width and reserving space for multi-machine status text. Retention settings, defaults, and cleanup behavior remain unchanged.

Walkthrough
The retention input now uses a fixed size. The browser-artifact and rotated-log retention rows each use an AnimatedHeight container. Their settings, descriptions, and update callbacks remain unchanged.

The retention input uses a fixed size of 5 instead of sizing based on the draft or saved value. Separate AnimatedHeight containers wrap the browser-artifact and rotated-log retention rows.

Explanation
The title "fix(web): keep retention controls stable while editing days" follows conventional commit format and names the main change: retention number fields no longer resize or shift layout while the day count is edited. The changeset fixes that layout instability by fixing the input width and wrapping the two rows in AnimatedHeight. The title is specific and matches the linked issue's requested outcome.

Explanation
Against the merge base 9bc4138, the whole-PR diff changes only apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx. The changes are: (1) import AnimatedHeight and wrap the browser-artifacts and rotated-logs SettingsRow elements in it; (2) change RetentionControl input sizing to a fixed size={5} and remove the draft-dependent sizing classes. Both changes relate directly to #26327. The diff contains no changes to retention policies, save or error handling, shared hooks, dependencies, tests, or persistence. The pending-save machinery from the previous review is absent at the current head, so the earlier concern about it does not apply.

Explanation
The description is complete enough for review. It explains the problem, the implementation, the linked issue, focused validation, visual evidence, and the agent details. It uses a "Validation" heading instead of "Verification" and does not include an explicit maintainer approval comment, but the required information is otherwise present and well documented.

Explanation
Issue #26327 requires two coding outcomes. (1) Retention controls stay visually stable across 9 ↔ 10 days. (2) Rows do not repeatedly grow and shrink as the mixed-machine status updates.
Requirement 1 is met. RetentionControl now sets NumberFieldInput to size={5} and removes the draft-dependent size and min-w-[1ch] sizing. The input width no longer depends on the digit count, so the decrement button does not move at digit boundaries.
Requirement 2 is not met. StorageCleanupSections still derives the mixed status from actual target values. The pending-save masking that the previous review relied on was removed, so the status line still appears and clears during edits. Each row is now wrapped in AnimatedHeight. This animates the height change over 200 ms. The rows still grow and shrink as the status updates, and the controls still move vertically. The PR description's own capture reports each row changing from 88 to 66 CSS pixels when the warning clears. Animation smooths the change but does not remove the repeated growth and shrinkage that the issue requests be avoided. The previous PASS depended on the removed save-tracking code and does not apply to the current head.
Resolution
Keep the row height constant while the mixed status changes during an edit. Either (a) render the mixed status so it does not affect row layout, for example as an overlaid or absolutely positioned line inside the description area, without a permanent blank line; or (b) hold the row height during a pending save, for example with the existing AnimatedHeightholdHeight prop, and release it when the targets report the saved value. Add a browser test that changes the mixed status and asserts that the row height and decrement-button position stay unchanged.

Line 185 reads a DOM attribute with a direct expect. The other new status assertions use the same pattern. Replace these checks with expect.element or vi.waitFor. As per coding guidelines, “Browser tests assert through expect.element or vi.waitFor.” The path instructions repeat this requirement. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
