fix(desktop): installing the t3 command no longer reports its own launcher as another t3 - #22375
On Linux and macOS, Settings → install the t3 command fails with Another t3 at ~/.t3/bin/t3 runs first in a new terminal. Remove it, or run the launcher directly at ~/.t3/bin/t3. when ~/.t3/bin is on PATH. The "other" t3 and the launcher are the same file.
foreignFirstOnPath takes the first t3 on PATH and treats it as foreign unless isOurLink accepts it. isOurLink starts with readLink, so it only accepts a symlink to the launcher, but the launcher written by DesktopCliShim is a regular file. state uses the same check for onPath, so the Settings row warned as well.
Fix
A new runsOurLauncher accepts a first match that is a link we made, or whose real path is the launcher's, and is used only for those two PATH checks. installedAt and uninstall keep the symlink-only rule, so the launcher can never be reported as an installed link or removed. With ~/.t3/bin first on PATH, Install still adds a link in the first writable folder on PATH, which is redundant but harmless and removable.
Verified in a real dev environment

reproduced on github/main (49a9e80e0b): settings > about > t3 command > install rejected its own regular launcher as "another t3".
ran vp i and background vp run dev on main and the exact contributor head, one server at a time. drove chrome from the repo's playwright dependency with /usr/bin/google-chrome.
built desktop/server bundles on blacksmith and ran an unarchived linux electron package with the real main process, preload, native ipc, backend, and filesystem. the installer is unavailable in an unpackaged dev app, so this step exercised the actual desktop path without a bridge stub or test ui.
used the same isolated t3 home and launcher-first login path on main and the pr. created the git project through the app and completed real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns in both web and desktop. the installed t3 app /home/user/cli-verification opened that project, and the final desktop turn returned ownership verification passed.
install, remove, and reinstall passed. removal deleted only the owned symlink and preserved the launcher's contents and executability. t3 --version and t3 --help ran through the generated launcher.
found the remaining review issue in native ipc: after removal it returned onPath: false although the launcher still ran. extended the existing regression, saw it fail, and fixed the state calculation while preserving windows marker behavior.
a real foreign npm-installed t3 first on path still blocked installation and reported its path. its checksum was unchanged.
blacksmith: vp run check:changed 65b4a6940794b5f3b7af5d19d9ddef0957b14fe5 passed format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and regression tests. all 11 command/launcher tests passed. two independent reviews found no issues on the final commit.
native ipc transcript after the fix:
install: installedPath=/home/user/.local/bin/t3, onPath=true
remove: installedPath=null, onPath=true
reinstall: installedPath=/home/user/.local/bin/t3, onPath=true

macos and windows native execution, signed release/AppImage installation and updates, and native ios/android clients were not exercised on this linux vm. windows behavior was covered by the existing tests. web/mobile have no desktop command installer. no relay or tunnel session was exercised.

https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/22046 edits firstOnPath in the same file to skip entries that are not executable files. The source changes merge cleanly and compose, since the launcher is written with mode 0755. Both PRs add a test at the same spot in DesktopCliCommand.test.ts, so whichever lands second needs that file's conflict resolved by keeping both tests.

…ncher as another t3
When ~/.t3/bin was first on PATH, "Install t3 command" refused with "Another t3
at ~/.t3/bin/t3 runs first", because the PATH check only accepted a symlink to
the launcher and the launcher itself is a regular file. Treat a first match that
resolves to the launcher as ours, for the shadow check and the on-PATH state
only. Installed links are still identified by symlink alone, so uninstall never
removes the launcher.

Walkthrough
The CLI command now recognizes launcher paths in PATH by checking whether a candidate resolves to the launcher and meets the file and marker checks. Unix shadow detection and onPath state use this check. Tests cover conflicting files and installation and uninstall when the launcher directory is first on PATH.

Summary
Launcher detection and PATH checks apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliCommand.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts
The command recognizes owned links and PATH candidates that resolve to the launcher. Shadow detection and Unix onPath state use this check. Tests cover a pre-existing conflicting file and installation and uninstall when the launcher directory is first on PATH.
pingdotgg/t3code#22046 — Changes PATH candidate detection used by this PR’s shadow and onPath checks.
pingdotgg/t3code#25417 — Adds pathCommand to CLI state, which may depend on the onPath result changed here.
pingdotgg/t3code#25317 — Uses DesktopCliCommand.state.onPath to select a command; this PR changes that state for direct launcher paths.

Fixes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/22361.
Problem
On Linux and macOS, Settings → install the
t3command fails withAnother t3 at ~/.t3/bin/t3 runs first in a new terminal. Remove it, or run the launcher directly at ~/.t3/bin/t3.when~/.t3/binis onPATH. The "other"t3and the launcher are the same file.foreignFirstOnPathtakes the firstt3onPATHand treats it as foreign unlessisOurLinkaccepts it.isOurLinkstarts withreadLink, so it only accepts a symlink to the launcher, but the launcher written byDesktopCliShimis a regular file.stateuses the same check foronPath, so the Settings row warned as well.Fix
A new
runsOurLauncheraccepts a first match that is a link we made, or whose real path is the launcher's, and is used only for those two PATH checks.installedAtanduninstallkeep the symlink-only rule, so the launcher can never be reported as an installed link or removed. With~/.t3/binfirst onPATH, Install still adds a link in the first writable folder onPATH, which is redundant but harmless and removable.Verified in a real dev environment
