Before: on main the composer footer has only the attach button on the left

After: a feather button sits right of attach, rich text showing

After: button pressed, the same draft shown as raw Markdown

Settings → Keybindings lists Composer: Toggle Rich Text on Ctrl /

Recording: Ctrl+/ switches to Markdown source and back with the caret kept inside "settings", typed letters land there, then the button switches it too

Checking the exact Markdown a draft will send meant going to Settings → Chat → Rich text composer and back. The composer now has a feather button right of attach, and a mod+/ shortcut, that flip that same setting, so the draft switches between styled text and literal **markers** in place. The button is the same ghost icon button as attach, pressed while the source is shown, and Settings stays in sync because everything writes composerRichTextEnabled. The shortcut is a configurable composer.toggleRichText binding (!terminalFocus), listed in Settings → Keybindings and shown in the button's tooltip; a held key flips once. This brings over the toggle from chrisdeeming's #12452 / #14676.

The editor already remounts on that setting and restores focus and caret, so no editor changes were needed: the button only swallows pointer-down to keep a focused editor focused. The button is hidden, and the shortcut does nothing, for pending questions that take a literal answer. The shortcut hydrates client settings before flipping, and does nothing while you type in a citation comment so the remount can't drop an unsaved comment; the button already saves that comment first, since clicking it closes the comment popover. The mobile app has its own composer and is unchanged.

Checked in the web dev client: the button and mod+/ both keep the draft, focus and caret in both directions, mod+/ works with focus outside the composer, a fast double press ends where it started, the mode survives a reload, an unsaved citation comment survives mod+/, Settings reflects the change, and the binding shows in Keybindings. Format, lint, typecheck (web, contracts, shared) and the keybinding tests pass. Desktop wraps the same web composer and was not run separately.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The composer gains a rich-text/Markdown toggle and a default mod+/ shortcut. The default keyboard-binding change requires human review, even though it reuses the existing composer preference.

Walkthrough

The composer footer adds a button to switch between rich text and Markdown source for non-literal answers. The composer also exposes a keyboard shortcut for this setting. Documentation and keybinding tests describe and verify the controls.

Changes: Composer Rich-Text Toggle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Toggle behavior and composer integration
apps/web/src/components/chat/ComposerRichTextToggle.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, docs/user/composer.md
The toggle updates the rich-text setting. The footer shows it for non-literal answers and retains the attachment button when present. The documentation explains the button and its relation to the Rich text composer setting.
Shortcut registration and validation
packages/contracts/src/keybindings.ts, packages/shared/src/keybindings.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/composerShortcuts.ts, apps/web/src/keybindings.test.ts, docs/user/keybindings.md
Registers mod+/ for composer.toggleRichText when terminal focus is inactive. Repeated key events do not toggle the setting. Tests check shortcut resolution across Mac, Windows, and Linux, and the documentation describes the shortcut.

Toggling Markdown mode while a citation comment is open can discard that unsaved comment, so flush or retain the draft before merging. On keyboard layouts where slash needs Shift, the new shortcut will not trigger; the footer button still works.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a composer control that switches between rich text and Markdown source, via a button or the mod+/ shortcut. It matches the changeset, which adds a toggle button, a configurable composer.toggleRichText keybinding, and docs for both. The title uses the conventional commit form and plain language.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections only in part. It has no Problem section, and no separate Change section. It covers the change in detail, but it does not state the problem as a bug or request. Scope and approval is weak: it cites chrisdeeming's #12452 / #14676 as the origin of the toggle, but it does not link a triaged issue or a maintainer approval comment, and it does not explain why the change qualifies as focused configuration of an established capability. Verification is strong: it lists manual checks in the web dev client with observed results, shows before/after screenshots, and includes a recording. It notes what was not run (desktop). The template also asks for the model and harness that did the work; the description says 'Written by claude-opus-5-5' and names Claude Code, which partly satisfies this.

Resolution

Add a Problem section that states the problem in a sentence or two, with expected behavior and reproduction steps. Add a Change section that explains how the change addresses that problem. Fill in Scope and approval: link the triaged issue or the discussion with maintainer approval (including the approval comment), or explain why the change qualifies as focused configuration of an existing capability (the composerRichTextEnabled setting). Then state whether the referenced #12452 / #14676 work has maintainer approval. Keep the existing Verification content and the model/harness line.

Show file links as Markdown in source mode.

This setting disables formatting but does not disable composer chips. For example, an inserted [file.ts](src/file.ts) remains a non-editable chip, so users cannot inspect or edit its Markdown in source mode. Preserve composer context while rendering its source text in this mode. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Re the CodeRabbit note on ComposerRichTextToggle.tsx:23 (file chips stay chips in source mode): no change. The button flips the existing composerRichTextEnabled setting, the same one as Settings → Chat → Rich text composer. Plain mode has always kept chips as chips and turned only the formatting marks into literal text (#12160). Showing chip source in plain mode would change that existing setting for everyone, which is out of scope here. This PR only adds the entry point.

Preserve undo history when switching modes.

Changing this setting remounts ComposerPromptEditorTiptapInner with a new Tiptap editor. Its undo history is lost. For example, a user who deletes draft text and switches modes cannot undo the deletion. Preserve the editing history across the mode switch. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
