Background pollers ran full SQL and per-thread work every few seconds on every server, even with nothing to do.

Metric (24h, fleet traces) Before After
Scheduled-task + webhook poll queries, idle server 4 per 5 s ~1 per 10 min
ServerSecretStore.get ~118k/day ~0 (cached until settings change)
materializeSettingsSecrets spans 2.1M/day ~0
Settlement sweep spans (settleThread, pullRequestFor, wouldSettle) ~2.7M/day 0 (untraced)
Writer PRAGMAs per minute (storage check) 6 3
  • getSettings reuses materialized secrets while the cached settings object is unchanged; every secret write rewrites settings.
  • Pollers remember their next due time; every write invalidates it; a 10-min backstop covers missed invalidation.
  • Fix included: an expanded-year (+011533-…) next_run_at no longer stalls every other task (found in review).
  • Tests: secret store not re-read between saves; idle poll still fires tasks saved later and beside a far-future task.

…k poll

The idle-poll hint parsed MIN(next_run_at), which sorts as text. An expanded
year such as +011533-… sorts first but parses far ahead, so the poll recorded
it and skipped every other task. Decide "due now" with the same text
comparison listDueTasks uses, and parse only to record the hint.

🟠 High src/serverSettings.ts:866

A concurrent getSettings can cache and return the credential from current even when the save later fails; rollback restores the secret files but leaves materialized pointing to that stale source, so subsequent reads continue exposing the rejected credential until a reload. getSettings materializes without acquiring writeSemaphore while updateAndPersistSettings changes secrets; serialize this materialization with writes or invalidate materialized on rollback.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change reduces idle background queries and tracing through caching and due-time hints. The unresolved credential-concurrency review needs reconciliation with the new rollback invalidation safeguards before rejected credentials can be considered safely handled.

Walkthrough

The changes add versioned due-work hints to scheduled-task and pending-webhook polling, cache materialized settings and database layout values, and switch selected thread-settlement effects to untraced wrappers. Tests cover polling, settings-cache behavior, and settlement when auto-settlement is disabled during dispatch.

Add focused coverage for layout-cache reuse.

DatabaseStorage.test.ts covers reclamation, but it does not cover repeated status and reclamation passes. Add a focused real-SQL count that asserts page_count and freelist_count are reread while page_size and auto_vacuum are read only once.

Compare parsed due times instead of timestamp text.

nextRunAt formats interval runs with DateTime.formatIso. With everyMs: 3e14, the test creates a year-10000+ timestamp whose leading + sorts before ordinary ISO timestamps in the TEXT column. MIN(next_run_at) can therefore select this far-future task first.

The raw comparison in runDueTasks treats that value as due, calls listDueTasks, and records no hint. The scheduler invokes this poll every five seconds, so the poll can repeat both reads.

Compare the parsed epoch time with nowMs before falling through to listDueTasks, while preserving the existing null and invalid-value handling.

Suggested fix
-      if (nextRunAt === null || nextRunAt > iso(now)) {
-        const nextDueAt =
-          nextRunAt === null
-            ? Option.some(Infinity)
-            : DateTime.make(nextRunAt).pipe(Option.map(DateTime.toEpochMillis));
-        if (Option.isSome(nextDueAt) && nextDueAt.value > nowMs) {
-          yield* dueTasks.record(readVersion, nextDueAt.value, nowMs);
-        }
+      const nextDueAt =
+        nextRunAt === null
+          ? Option.some(Infinity)
+          : DateTime.make(nextRunAt).pipe(Option.map(DateTime.toEpochMillis));
+      if (Option.isSome(nextDueAt) && nextDueAt.value > nowMs) {
+        yield* dueTasks.record(readVersion, nextDueAt.value, nowMs);
         return;
       }
+      if (nextRunAt === null || (Option.isNone(nextDueAt) && nextRunAt > iso(now))) return;

The new far-future test does not detect this regression. It only verifies that the ordinary task eventually launches; it does not assert that subsequent idle ticks skip the SQL queries. The PR's far-future hint fix is therefore incomplete.

Serialize getSettings with settings writes.

getSettings can materialize secrets while updateAndPersistSettings has applied secret changes but has not completed writeSettingsAtomically. If the write fails, rollback restores the secret store, but the rollback path does not clear materialized. The unchanged cached source can then return the rolled-back secret.

Suggested fix
-    getSettings: getMaterializedSettings,
+    getSettings: writeSemaphore.withPermits(1)(getMaterializedSettings),

Add a focused test that exercises a concurrent getSettings during a failing settings write.

@juliusmarminge juliusmarminge changed the title perf(server): idle background pollers stop running SQL and per-thread work perf(server): idle servers run 100x fewer background queries and 4.8M fewer spans a day Oct 29, 2026
…ve a mid-sweep change

A getSettings that overlapped a secret write could cache secrets that a failed
save then rolled back, and the settings cache kept the same object, so reads
kept returning the rejected credential. Secret writes now bump a generation
around the write, and a read that overlapped one is not cached.

Settlement sweeps used the settings from sweep start for every candidate, and
thread.auto-settle does not recheck them, so turning auto-settle off mid-sweep
still settled threads. Each decision reads settings again; with the cached
materialization that read is a cache hit.
