fix(web): Enter no longer skips an unanswered question - #23626
With a multi-question prompt open, Enter in the composer moves to the next question even when the current one has no answer. The Next button is disabled in that state, but Enter goes through useComposerSend to onAdvanceActivePendingUserInput, which advances without checking. On the last question, Submit needs every answer, so it stays disabled and picking an option there sends nothing. The panel shows the pick with a check mark and nothing points at the empty earlier question, so the prompt looks frozen until the user finds the back arrow or stops the run.
I hit this in Nightly 3386: a two-question prompt from the agent appeared as I pressed Enter to send a message. The server trace for that thread has no answer command between the question arriving and my Stop 85 seconds later.
Steps:
Have an agent ask two questions in one prompt.
With the composer focused and empty, press Enter on question 1.
The panel moves to 2/2. Pick an option: Submit stays disabled and nothing is sent.
Change
onAdvanceActivePendingUserInput returns early when the active question cannot advance. That is the same canAdvance condition that disables the Next button, so Enter on an unanswered question now does what a click on the disabled button does: nothing. The last-question branch already required complete answers. Picking an option still advances: its timer calls the same function after the pick is stored.
Scope and approval
A small, focused fix for an obvious bug: the keyboard path skips a check the button enforces, and the skipped question leaves the prompt unanswerable. No contract, server, setting or default changes.
Verification
Real app: vp run dev on this branch, Claude Haiku 5.5 asked two questions (Color: Red or Blue, Size: Small or Large).
Before (the two added lines removed, which matches main): Enter in the empty composer on "Color 1/2" moved to "Size 2/2". Picking Small showed the check, Submit stayed disabled and the agent kept waiting.
After: Enter on "Color 1/2" left the panel on 1/2 with Next disabled. Clicking Red moved to 2/2, clicking Small submitted, and the agent replied "Red, Small."
vp test run --project browser src/components/chat/ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.navigation.browser.test.tsx: 3 passed. The new test fails without the fix (question index 1, expected 0).
vp test run --project unit src/pendingUserInput.test.ts src/components/chat/composerTypingGuard.test.ts: 19 passed. vp run --filter @t3tools/web typecheck, vp lint and vp fmt --check on the changed files are clean.
Not checked: the desktop app and mobile.
Before: Enter on the unanswered "Color" question jumped here. Small is picked, Submit is disabled, the agent waits.
After: Enter on the unanswered question leaves it on 1/2.
After: answering both questions submits them.
Model: Claude Opus 5.5. Harness: Claude Code in T3 Code.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained web bug fix that keeps the composer on an unanswered question by applying the same canAdvance check already used by the disabled Next button. It includes focused regression coverage and does not alter APIs, defaults, or production configuration.
You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.
The pending-question advance handler now checks whether the active question can advance. A browser test verifies that an unanswered question stays selected and that selecting an option allows advancement.
The handler returns without advancing when the active question cannot advance. The browser test checks that an unanswered question remains on Question 1 and that selecting an option allows advancement to Question 2.
pingdotgg/t3code#23855: Both changes guard pending-question advancement and test question navigation.
pingdotgg/t3code#24825: Both changes concern the active-question advance path and its validation.

Drive the new navigation test through a rendered probe.
PendingRequestsProbe assigns hook state to module-level requests from useLayoutEffect. Browser-test guidance forbids both patterns. The new test uses requests for advancing, selecting, and reading the question index.
Expose the index and all actions used by the test through the rendered probe, then drive and assert them through screen. This is a localized refactor, not a major high-effort change.

updated the original branch at 2c1d348dd2ed4b52d89ea77bbf6406e1598687f9, preserving @mkantautas's commits and merging main (72d4dc9b1e80). the original guard was the right fix. the production diff is now one line; i removed two redundant comments and an unused fake timer from the regression setup. no behavior or coverage was dropped.
verification:
final github status: clean and mergeable; 21 checks passed, 7 skipped, none pending or failing at this head.
reproduced on current-main production code: enter skipped unanswered color; choosing small on size left the request waiting.
the existing-file regression failed without the guard (expected question 1, received question 2). restoring it passed all 3 browser tests and 19 nearby unit tests on blacksmith.
vp run check:changed passed on blacksmith: format, lint, unused-code checks, affected typechecks, and the browser regression.
real codex request, same questions and client data: enter stayed on color, clicking red advanced, clicking small submitted, and codex replied "red small". screenshots are 1440×1000; uploaded videos were played and seeked successfully.
two independent read-only reviews approved this exact head with no findings.
review response / known limit: coderabbit asks for automated Enter coverage through the production editor. this regression intentionally targets the changed hook boundary and fails without the guard. the real-app recordings exercise the production Enter path and successful provider response. automated editor-keyboard wiring coverage remains a nonblocking limit; no production issue was identified.
unverified: native desktop/mobile clients and other providers. the shared web/desktop hook changed; mobile, server, and contracts are untouched.
before: enter skipped unanswered color.
after: enter stays on unanswered color; answering both reaches codex.
Exercise the production Enter path in this regression test.
The test clicks a synthetic Submit button that directly invokes onAdvanceActivePendingUserInput(). It does not render the composer editor or dispatch {Enter}. A regression in the production Enter path could therefore pass this test.
Use the production composer fixture, focus its editor, and send {Enter} before asserting that the question remains "Question 1". Keep the answered-question assertion to cover advancement after selection.

checked out the exact pr head and ran vp i and the real background dev server. drove the web app with the repo playwright dependency and /usr/bin/google-chrome, at 1440×1000. added the real /home/user/t3code git repo through the project picker and created provider requests through the composer. no mocks, fixtures, replay provider or seeded demo data.
both runs used codex gpt-6.1-sol, low effort, full access, plan mode enabled through settings. the same prompt asked color (red/blue) and size (small/large) in one real request_user_input call.
main: with the empty production composer focused, enter skipped unanswered color to size 2/2. clicking small left submit disabled and codex waiting.
pr: enter kept color at 1/2 and next disabled. clicking red advanced to size; clicking small submitted both answers. the provider resumed and replied Red Small.
nearby behavior: typed Purple, pressed enter, went back with the previous-question button and confirmed Purple was preserved. returned to size, pressed enter with no answer and confirmed submit stayed disabled. clicking large submitted; codex replied Purple Large.
blacksmith: existing navigation browser suite passed 3/3; pending-user-input and composer-typing-guard unit suites passed 19/19. initial runner setup needed the web working directory and installation of playwright chromium; both were corrected before the passing run. github reports 21 passed, 7 skipped, none failing or pending.

native electron desktop, ios/android clients, other providers, remote relay/tunnel connections, and macos/windows-specific behavior were not exercised on this linux vm. the production change is confined to the shared web/desktop question-navigation hook; no server or contract change. the automated regression calls the hook through a rendered probe rather than dispatching enter through the editor; the real-app pass above exercised the production keyboard path.
- Thread details: upstream made the card's items configurable (pingdotgg#26904); Cody's side chat section sits after Lineage and always shows in full density.
- Side chat question answers adapted to upstream moving the answer helpers into client-runtime (pingdotgg#26167, new argument order). Next/Submit now go through planSideChatAdvance, which also takes upstream's fix that an unanswered question doesn't advance (pingdotgg#23626). New regression test: apps/web/src/cody/sideChatAnswers.test.ts.
- Desktop updates: Cody's auto-install IPC kept beside upstream's track-switch setUpdateChannel(channel, minimumVersion) (pingdotgg#26288). Cody's update channel test now checks upstream's desktopUpdateChannelOf, which replaced resolveDefaultDesktopUpdateChannel.
- Force stop RPC (pingdotgg#27252) and Cody side chat RPCs both kept in ws.ts and the guarded scope list.
- Server browser: Cody's Windows work-account sign-in setup kept beside upstream's agent scope launcher (pingdotgg#27239).
- agentContextBudget.json: upstream's new MCP tool size, Cody's Claude and Codex sizes (final-answer block), re-measured.
- docs/user/usage.md: upstream's thread details Usage paragraph plus Cody's OpenCode Copilot limits text.
- Sidebar logo link reads "Cody home" instead of upstream's "T3 Code home" (pingdotgg#24209).
- Server tests: side chat mocks gain upstream's new ScratchThreadPromotion service and thread management methods.
- personal-fork skill: sync notes for this run.
- Upstream's pre-commit now runs knip on files and exports: Cody's script entry points are listed in knip.jsonc, and constants only used in their own file are no longer exported. A Cody test comment drops a PR number for the new comment lint.

Problem
With a multi-question prompt open, Enter in the composer moves to the next question even when the current one has no answer. The Next button is disabled in that state, but Enter goes through
useComposerSendtoonAdvanceActivePendingUserInput, which advances without checking. On the last question, Submit needs every answer, so it stays disabled and picking an option there sends nothing. The panel shows the pick with a check mark and nothing points at the empty earlier question, so the prompt looks frozen until the user finds the back arrow or stops the run.I hit this in Nightly 3386: a two-question prompt from the agent appeared as I pressed Enter to send a message. The server trace for that thread has no answer command between the question arriving and my Stop 85 seconds later.
Steps:
Change
onAdvanceActivePendingUserInputreturns early when the active question cannot advance. That is the samecanAdvancecondition that disables the Next button, so Enter on an unanswered question now does what a click on the disabled button does: nothing. The last-question branch already required complete answers. Picking an option still advances: its timer calls the same function after the pick is stored.Scope and approval
A small, focused fix for an obvious bug: the keyboard path skips a check the button enforces, and the skipped question leaves the prompt unanswerable. No contract, server, setting or default changes.
Verification
vp run devon this branch, Claude Haiku 5.5 asked two questions (Color: Red or Blue, Size: Small or Large).main): Enter in the empty composer on "Color 1/2" moved to "Size 2/2". Picking Small showed the check, Submit stayed disabled and the agent kept waiting.vp test run --project browser src/components/chat/ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.navigation.browser.test.tsx: 3 passed. The new test fails without the fix (question index 1, expected 0).vp test run --project unit src/pendingUserInput.test.ts src/components/chat/composerTypingGuard.test.ts: 19 passed.vp run --filter @t3tools/web typecheck,vp lintandvp fmt --checkon the changed files are clean. Before: Enter on the unanswered "Color" question jumped here. Small is picked, Submit is disabled, the agent waits.
After: Enter on the unanswered question leaves it on 1/2.
After: answering both questions submits them.
