The native React Compiler skipped MessagesTimeline.tsx with 17 bailouts, so the timeline, the busiest component while an agent streams, ran uncompiled. It now compiles with 0 diagnostics and joins REACT_COMPILED_FILES, so lint holds it there with no manual memoization.

  • Refs read in render became state adjusted during render:
    • The remembered scroll snapshot and work-group view state are one state object, reset when the list identity changes. This replaces listIdentityRef.
    • The incremental row projection is useIncrementalTimelineRows, following useIncrementalTimelineEntries. It compares inputs by reference and the expanded-id sets by content, so sets rebuilt each render don't cause a re-derive loop.
    • useStableRows and useStableHandoffRuns follow the same pattern.
  • Find-driven expansion: when find lands on a match inside a collapsed turn or attempt, the expanded set updates during render instead of in an effect. The visible sets already merged the match during render, so nothing on screen changes.
  • Manual memoization: all 65 useMemo/useCallback are gone.
  • Video asset: buildAttachmentVideoAsset takes id/name/mimeType, so the memo the compiler builds keys on those fields.
  • Lint: react/jsx-no-constructed-context-values is off for compile-required files only. The compiler memoizes those context values, and the rule's suggested fix is the useMemo that no-manual-memo bans.

Scroll restore and the LegendList integration are unchanged; layout effects stay layout effects.

Measured in the dev app on a real project thread, counting React renders per interaction:

Interaction Before (#20380) After this PR
Agent streams a 20-line reply 9,632 renders / 222 commits 5,367 / 184
Switch to a 579-item thread 4,119 3,350
Switch back 1,463 1,098
Scroll timeline down 3,600px 489 297
Type 19 chars 786 676

No console errors or update loops were seen during the pass.

Tests: MessagesTimeline, logic and active-tools tests, reactCompiledFiles, timeline minimap, session logic (272 pass in the touched set).

Measured with the native React Compiler (oxc-transform-react) on each layer's ChatView.tsx. "Crashes" means it hit an internal codegen error and left ChatView uncompiled; "skips" means it reported reasons it could not compile it. Strict files must compile with no bailouts, no manual memoization and no effect-rule violations; lint and reactCompiledFiles.test.ts enforce it.

📝 Walkthrough

Chat view delegates script editing and keyboard shortcuts to dedicated hooks. Composer and timeline state and rendering logic are updated. Client runtime provider projections reuse unchanged references.

Changes: Chat UI state and interactions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Script editing and keyboard shortcut handling
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/useProjectScriptEditing.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/useChatShortcuts.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/composerFocusRedirect.ts
Project-script persistence and keyboard shortcut handling move into hooks. Focus redirection helpers define keyboard and paste eligibility, and ChatView supplies hook inputs and handlers.
Composer state and derived values
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx
Composer layout, provider selection, command-menu values, prompt history, and session state use updated render and layout paths.
Composer attachments and pending work
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx
Attachment downloads and processing, imports, stash encoding, and paste handling use shared helpers or explicit cleanup paths. Workspace snapshot refresh retries failed or incomplete refreshes after a cooldown.
Timeline identity, folds, and row projection
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx
Timeline state and disclosure handling use remembered snapshots per list identity. Find updates expand matching folds and attempts, and row projections track identity and inputs.
Scroll restoration and list positioning
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx
List loading, restore pins, anchors, overflow reporting, and viewport configuration are assembled directly. The footer inset is zero when anchored end space is active.
Direct rendering and compiler integration
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ExpandedImagePreview.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ThreadStatusIndicators.tsx, apps/web/src/types.ts, apps/web/reactCompiledFiles.ts, vite.config.ts
Timeline rendering values and handlers are constructed directly. Video asset construction uses only the required attachment fields. The React Compiler file list and lint override are updated; adjacent chat exports are removed.

Client runtime provider projection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider projection identity reuse
packages/client-runtime/src/state/serverConfigProjection.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/serverConfigProjection.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.test.ts
The projection recursively reuses unchanged arrays and plain objects. Tests cover unchanged values, nested references, changed arrays, and removed keys.

Workspace preparation command type export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry input type re-export
packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadCommands.ts
The module adds the retry input type to its type exports.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4ede1

This change makes the timeline, composer, and sidebar run under the React Compiler, and it moves chat shortcuts and project-script editing into dedicated hooks. No concrete user-facing regression was found. One small optional refactor could reduce unnecessary row re-renders when a work group is toggled.

744-755: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Consider keeping onToggleWorkGroup stable for the shared row context.

onToggleWorkGroup reads expandedWorkGroupIds from the render closure. The compiler therefore creates a new handler on each work-group toggle. That new handler gives sharedState (lines 1212-1249) a new identity, so every row that reads TimelineRowCtx re-renders on each toggle. The path instructions recommend this: "write handlers as plain functions and wrap them with useStableCallback only where they leave the component, such as props". The previous useCallback probably had the same dependency, so this is not a regression. Two options remove the churn:

  • Wrap the handler with useStableCallback.
  • Derive the collapsed flag from a ref instead of the render closure.
♻️ Possible refactor
-  const onToggleWorkGroup = (groupId: string, anchorKey: string) => {
+  const onToggleWorkGroup = useStableCallback((groupId: string, anchorKey: string) => {
     suspendEndScrollMaintenanceForDisclosure(anchorKey, expandedWorkGroupIds.has(groupId));
     setExpandedWorkGroupIds((existing) => {
       const next = new Set(existing);
       if (next.has(groupId)) {
         next.delete(groupId);
       } else {
         next.add(groupId);
       }
       return next;
     });
-  };
+  });

As per path instructions: "wrap them with useStableCallback only where they leave the component, such as props, dependency arrays, or effect and memo bodies".

MessagesTimeline skipped compilation on render-time ref reads, a captured
`++`, and a video asset memo keyed narrower than its body. The list
identity snapshot, incremental row projection, stable rows and stable
handoff runs now live in state adjusted during render, find-driven fold
expansion happens during render instead of in an effect, and manual
useMemo/useCallback are gone. The file joins REACT_COMPILED_FILES; the
constructed-context-value rule is off there because the compiler
memoizes those values.

**Full Changelog**: pingdotgg/t3code@v0.1.1-nightly.20261017.3234...v0.1.1-nightly.20261017.3238

Upstream release: https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/releases/tag/v0.1.1-nightly.20261017.3238
AdEx-Partners-DE added a commit to AdEx-Partners-DE/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 19, 2026
Upstream pingdotgg#20402 made MessagesTimeline compile by keeping the list identity
in state and building rows with useIncrementalTimelineRows. The fork kept
its older version of those parts (it had adopted the open upstream pingdotgg#19663,
which changes the same code), so the compiler skipped the whole file:
refs read during render in five places and one memo it could not keep.

Ported from nightly 3315: the list identity lives in state, the latest-run
effect remembers which list its previous run belonged to, rows come from
useIncrementalTimelineRows, handoff runs and stable rows are held in state,
and the video attachment asset follows only the fields it reads. The fork's
own fields (unreachableRevertTurnCounts, remembered disclosures) stay.

Fork rank 0bq.
