CMUXAgentLaunch: carry Subrouter session identity through restore - #24428
Carries a Subrouter-routed Codex session's identity through cmux restore, so a restored tab resumes through sr codex resume instead of a direct codex resume that would reach a dead Subrouter data-plane URL.
This is the package half of the Subrouter identity work in #21423, split out on current main.
The app-side snapshot-import and workspace-binding changes come in a follow-up.
This PR has no Claude routing changes.
What changes
Provider evidence (SubrouterCodexResumeRouting)
Evidence is absent, provider(name) or ambiguous, read from the captured argv, or for older captures from the captured CODEX_HOME/config.toml. Explicit argv evidence always wins over the config.
Only top-level keys are read: parsing stops at the first [table] or [[array]] header, and text inside """ / ''' multi-line strings is ignored.
Only the exact model_provider key counts; model_providers.* is unrelated.
These make the evidence ambiguous, which never routes:
an unquoted value, a quoted key or an escape;
a top-level profile key;
a captured argv that selects a profile (--profile, -p, --profile=, -c profile=).
The config is opened (following a symlink) and the opened descriptor must be a regular file. At most 64 KiB is read from that same handle, so what is checked is what is read.
The config is read when the restore is planned, not at capture.
Resume argv
A capture with the wrapper-bound marker resumes through that marker (sr / subrouter / cx codex resume).
A markerless capture that names no provider in argv, but whose config proves Subrouter, uses the fixed sr codex resume.
A capture whose argv names model_provider=subrouter is rerouted to sr codex resume by builtInKind. That reroute:
strips the captured model_providers.subrouter.* endpoint;
keeps the update-check suppression override;
also applies to a Codex executable with a custom name;
requires argv[0] to match the captured executable, the same identity rule as a bound-marker capture.
The markerless reroute runs its Subrouter child through cmux's managed Codex wrapper, like a bound-marker restore: when the wrapper shim is available, the planner sets SUBROUTER_CODEX_BIN to it, CMUX_CUSTOM_CODEX_PATH to the captured custom executable (the launch environment's captured CMUX_CUSTOM_CODEX_PATH first, then the captured executable path; so a custom binary such as codex-enterprise is kept; ambient values are never used) and the restore-launch authorization. Without a shim it still runs fixed sr and sets none of them. A declared external launcher doesn't wrap the reroute, as with the marker route.
LauncherResolution.rejected is new: a capture that claims a routed Codex launch but whose executable doesn't match its argv. The app and CLI resume callers treat it as "do not resume" rather than falling back to a direct resume.
When no executable path was recorded, argv[0] itself must name Codex.
Restore planner
Every prepared-argv fallback for Codex (empty capture, .resolved(nil), and builtInKind returning nil) refuses prepared argv that carries private Subrouter routing.
Codex recovery always goes through the structured restore path.

On the head (fd33adc), xcodebuild -scheme cmux-unit build-for-testing reports TEST BUILD SUCCEEDED; the CLI used in the live run below came from that build.
Earlier, the app and CLI compiled at 3b1ea6c, and a tagged dev build (reload.sh --tag d24428) compiles at f31077a:
xcodebuild -scheme cmux-unit build-for-testing: TEST BUILD SUCCEEDED.
Both used a -derivedDataPath under /Volumes/Atelier/Code.
This includes the app's and the CLI's handling of .rejected in their exhaustive switches.
Live restore through the built cmux-cli at fd33adc (the binary reports cmux 0.65.2 (111) [fd33adc1c]), cmux restore codex <id>:
Setup: no app and no login shell. The CLI ran under env -i with a scratch HOME and PATH=<stubs>:/usr/bin:/bin. A socket responder served one restore record per case, and each case got a minimal rollout in its effective CODEX_HOME.
Stubs:sr, codex, codex-enterprise, caffeinate and the wrapper shim cmux-codex-wrapper only log their argv and environment, then exit. The harness aborts if anything else runs.
Case h sets CMUX_CODEX_WRAPPER_SHIM the way the app exports it into a terminal. Cases i and j declare a caffeinate external launcher (resumeArgvPrefix: ["caffeinate", "-i"]) in a project cmux.json in the session's directory; j is the positive control showing the launcher does wrap a direct resume.
Result: every case exited 0 and only stub paths ran. The rerouted cases captured model_providers.subrouter.base_url="http://127.0.0.1:59999/dead/v1" (case a also had SUBROUTER_CODEX_BASE_URL); neither appears anywhere in the stubs' logs.
Every resume also carried -c check_for_update_on_startup=false after the id.

No restore was run inside a tagged app's terminal panes. Those panes start through login -flp, which resets HOME and PATH to the real account. The CLI run above uses the same restore code without them.
cmuxTests was compiled but not run locally, because the test host app opens the real Feed store.
No tagged app was launched.
No end-to-end restore was run against a live Subrouter.
Bring the package side of manaflow-ai#21423's Subrouter restore work onto current
main: Codex and Claude resume routing that proves a Subrouter route from
the wrapper-bound marker, captured argv or the captured CODEX_HOME config,
restore planner and recovery planner hooks, and their tests.
Eight of the tests fail here: the markerless fallback added for
config-proven captures also reroutes argv-proven captures that carry no
wrapper-bound marker, which the fail-closed tests forbid. The next commit
fixes that.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The markerless fallback was meant for older captures that prove the route
through their CODEX_HOME config. It also fired for argv that names
model_provider=subrouter without the wrapper-bound marker, so an inherited
or untrusted marker rerouted a direct Codex restore. Use the stable
`sr codex resume` launcher only when the argv names no provider and the
config proves Subrouter; argv-proven routes still need the bound marker.
Fixes the eight tests from the previous commit and adds a test for the
config-proven path end to end.

usesSubrouterProvider/providerEvidence and their tokenizer are used only

of this change. Keep the package to what its existing callers exercise.

Codex restore now validates Subrouter provider evidence and captured executable identity before selecting a routed resume. It builds sr codex resume arguments, rejects unsafe fallbacks, clears the captured Subrouter base URL, and excludes Codex from launcher-prefix recovery.

Provider evidence distinguishes absent, unique, and ambiguous declarations. When argv has no provider declaration, bounded CODEX_HOME config can provide evidence. Tests cover conflicting and malformed declarations, config parsing, and file limits.

Resume resolution checks captured executable identity and provider evidence. Routed Codex restores use sr codex resume with the session ID. Rejected launcher resolution and prepared arguments containing private Subrouter routing do not fall through to alternate arguments.
Restore environment and recovery behavior Packages/macOS/CMUXAgentLaunch/Sources/CMUXAgentLaunch/SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.swift, Packages/macOS/CMUXAgentLaunch/Sources/CMUXAgentLaunch/AgentSessionRecoveryPlanner.swift, Packages/macOS/CMUXAgentLaunch/Tests/CMUXAgentLaunchTests/AgentLaunchEnvironmentPolicyTests.swift, Packages/macOS/CMUXAgentLaunch/Tests/CMUXAgentLaunchTests/AgentRestoreLaunchTests.swift, Packages/macOS/CMUXAgentLaunch/Tests/CMUXAgentLaunchTests/AgentSessionRecoveryTests.swift
Restore clears SUBROUTER_CODEX_BASE_URL instead of restoring a captured value. Codex recovery candidates no longer use recorded launcher prefixes. Tests cover environment and recovery behavior.
manaflow-ai/cmux#24490: Extends Subrouter Codex restore behavior for legacy records containing a saved shell command, using the same routing components and fallback handling.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to fd33a
A narrow class of legacy Codex captures with no recorded arguments, routed through Subrouter only by their config, would resume directly through Codex instead of through Subrouter. Fix the empty-argv fallback ordering before merging; the other routing paths look sound.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the package (CMUXAgentLaunch) and the main change (carrying Subrouter session identity through restore). The changeset adds Subrouter Codex provider evidence and routes restored sessions through sr codex resume, so the title matches the main change. It is short, specific, and has no file list or emoji.
Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input
Explanation
The check is not applicable. The pull request changes Codex/Subrouter restore planning and related tests in CMUXAgentLaunch, CLI/cmux.swift, and RestorableAgentSession.swift. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui clients, physical transports, manual Ghostty panes, input ownership, snapshots, or auth/lease/revision transport fences.
Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation
Explanation
No actor-isolation defect is introduced. The production diff adds only pure synchronous logic and a Sendable value enum; SubrouterCodexResumeRouting, AgentResumeArgv, and planner types remain value types. No new implicit-MainActor model, async service protocol, UI-bound store access, or shared mutable Sendable reference appears. The changed CLI and restore code only add .rejected switch branches. The Swift package has no default MainActor isolation setting.
Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime
Explanation
The production Swift diff adds no semaphore, blocking wait, sleep, delayed dispatch, polling synchronization, main-queue sync, or manual lock. The new config inspection uses a bounded regular-file read opened with O_NONBLOCK; this is file inspection, not blocking synchronization. Test changes are allowed scaffolding.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only Codex/Subrouter restore planning, resume arguments, CLI handling, and related tests. It does not change browser socket commands, WebKit/AppKit routing, processV2Command, socketWorkerMethods, or worker browser automation policy tests. The browser automation off-main check is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
No cache substitution is introduced. The production diff changes restore routing and launcher handling, but it does not replace an authoritative persistence, history, undo, or snapshot read with a cache. The new Codex config path opens the current CODEX_HOME/config.toml during restore and reads it from the opened file, bounded to 64 KiB (SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.swift:459-492). The other changes consume persisted launch metadata and add fail-closed routing; they do not introduce cached reads or stale-cache persistence.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
No algorithmic-complexity violation is introduced. The new config parser processes a single explicitly bounded 64 KiB file (SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.swift:222-265, 465-491) with linear passes over disjoint lines. Other scans operate on one captured argv during restore. The diff adds no batch workspace/session scans, repeated sorting/filtering in hot paths, in-memory joins, or unbounded collection algorithm.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
PASS. The pull request adds synchronous restore-planning, provider-evidence, and argument-parsing logic. Added production lines introduce no Dispatch queues, Combine state, completion-handler APIs, or fire-and-forget Tasks. Existing concurrency constructs in CLI/cmux.swift are unchanged, and added test synchronization is absent.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
PASS: The pull request adds no @concurrent, nonisolated async, @MainActor, actor, or Task code. The changed restore and routing APIs are synchronous, including SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.readCapturedConfigToml and its callers. The diff therefore introduces no Swift concurrency annotation violation or UI-isolated async heavy helper covered by the rule.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
The production feature logic is added to the existing SwiftPM target CMUXAgentLaunch, not to the app target. The app-target changes in CLI/cmux.swift and Sources/RestorableAgentSession.swift only handle the new .rejected result in resume composition. The changed package code is independently tested in CMUXAgentLaunchTests, so the diff does not violate the stated Swift package-boundary rules.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes only CMUXAgentLaunch source and test files, plus CLI and restore-session source files. It does not change a Package.swift dependency declaration, a cmux-owned .gitignore, an Xcode package reference, a workflow, or any Package.resolved file. Therefore no SwiftPM lockfile update is required.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
PASS: The production Swift diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, Logger, or ad hoc diagnostic logging. The new FileHandle use in SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.swift:482-491 reads bounded config data; it does not log. Existing CLI output is unchanged handling and is allowed.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
The production diff adds restore-routing logic only. New string literals are protocol/config/command tokens such as sr, codex, resume, model_provider, and environment keys, which are allowed literal tokens. No user-facing Swift text, localization catalog, Info.plist, web message, or locale-registry change was introduced.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only agent restore/routing Swift code, CLI code, and tests. The diff introduces no SwiftUI views or state/layout patterns such as ObservableObject, @Published, GeometryReader, lazy/list row store references, or render-time state mutation.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
PASS. The diff adds deterministic restore planning and provider-evidence parsing. It does not add sleeps, delayed dispatch, polling, locks, observers, mutable state owners, or UI lifecycle bridges. The bounded file read uses O_NONBLOCK to reject non-regular files; it is not a lifecycle race repair. preparedFallback and .rejected preserve a clear restore invariant, and the CLI and session builder handle the new result as required exhaustive callers rather than duplicate entrypoint wiring. Added tests cover the new routing and fail-closed cases.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes agent restore/routing logic, CLI handling, and tests only. The authoritative diff adds or changes no NSWindow, NSPanel, NSWindowController, SwiftUI Window/WindowGroup, close-menu workaround, or auxiliary window identifier. The auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
The authoritative diff changes 12 existing Swift source and test files only, with no added artifact directories or non-source files. Diff summary shows no renames or copied artifacts. The only temporary-looking strings are test fixture working-directory values such as /tmp/project and /tmp/legacy-repo, not checked-in tool output or directories. The change therefore satisfies source-control-artifacts.md.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
PASS. The production diff adds no #if DEBUG or test-build guard, and no member uses a test/debug seam name. The new provider-evidence methods implement Subrouter routing logic: resumeArguments uses providerEvidenceWithCapturedConfig, and restore planning and resume argv generation use providerEvidence. The added preparedFallback helper also has production callers. The test changes are under Tests/, and no production accessor exposes otherwise-private state for test observation.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has Summary, Testing (with Observed and Not run subsections), and a Proof-free Changelog gap. It explains the provider-evidence model, the resume routing rules, the new LauncherResolution.rejected outcome, and the restore planner changes. It also records concrete verification: swift test results, xcodebuild outcomes, and a live CLI restore matrix with eight-plus cases and explicit not-run items. Two gaps remain. The Changelog section is missing, though the template asks for one line or 'none'. The Proof section and the Checklist are absent. The Summary and Testing sections are strong, so the description is mostly complete. Note also a count mismatch: the description reports 883 tests passing, while the objectives summary reports 878.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
The PR adds synchronous filesystem I/O and TOML parsing to SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.readCapturedConfigToml (open, fstat, and a bounded FileHandle read at lines 459-489). resumeArguments calls it during restore planning. The app reaches this through TerminalController.agentRestoreTargetRecord, an @MainActor socket-handler path, via controlSurfaceResumeGet and controlSurfaceRestoreRecord. The new path has no cached or background accessor.
Resolution
Move captured CODEX_HOME/config.toml inspection to a focused background actor or Task.detached/cached repository. Pass the resulting provider evidence into restore planning, and keep the MainActor/socket-handler path limited to consuming that result and launching the process.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
The changed markerless/config-proven Codex restore reaches product CLI output. SubrouterCodexResumeRouting.resumeArguments now returns sr codex resume <sessionID> for a config-proven capture (lines 142-157), and agentSurfaceResumeCommand stores that command in the surface resume binding. cmux surface resume show prints the binding command (CLI/cmux.swift:11654-11672). The existing public payload sanitizer only redacts command when a private Subrouter environment key is present; a markerless config route can carry only CODEX_HOME, so sr remains visible in text and JSON output. This exposes an internal provider launcher in user-facing command output.
Resolution
Keep the internal sr codex resume argv for execution, but redact the command from public surface resume show text and JSON payloads for config-proven and marker-proven Subrouter routes. Carry structured routing provenance, or use equivalent narrow detection, so public output does not expose sr or provider-specific restore details. Add regression tests for markerless config captures in both text and JSON output.

session restore through sr. Stop at the first [ or [[ header, treat text
inside multi-line strings as opaque, match the exact key (model_providers.*
no longer reads as ambiguous), and treat an unquoted value, a quoted key,
an escape or a top-level profile key as ambiguous. A captured argv that
selects a profile (--profile, -p, --profile=, -c profile=) also makes the
config evidence ambiguous, since the profile can override the provider.

…pened file
attributesOfItem does not follow a symlink, so a linked config.toml was
skipped and its route not proved; it also checked one file and then read
another. Open the path (following a link, non-blocking), fstat the opened
descriptor, require a regular file, and read at most 64 KiB from that
handle. Document that the config is read at restore time.

…back
The check that refuses prepared argv carrying model_providers.subrouter.*
ran only when the captured argv was empty. The .resolved(nil) and
builtInKind-nil fallbacks still replayed it. Route all three through one
helper.

… the update override
builtInKind checked the Subrouter provider with the argv-only evidence,
which requires argv[0] to be named codex, so a custom Codex executable
(codex-enterprise) replayed the captured dead localhost data-plane URL.
The kind is known to be Codex here, so use the launcher-aware evidence.
The rerouted argv also lacked the update-check suppression every cmux
Codex resume carries, so a restore could stop at the update picker.

…re planner
The old test only asserted the evidence helpers. Plan a real restore for a
capture that names no provider and check the CODEX_HOME config decides:
subrouter routes through sr codex resume, openai does not.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…oute
builtInKind rerouted any argv naming model_provider=subrouter to sr codex
resume even when argv[0] was not the captured executable, while the same
capture with a bound marker was rejected. Use the same identity rule on
both paths.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Also reword the assertion message that read as if the inherited marker
alone decided the route; it only means launcherResolution leaves the
capture to builtInKind.

…wrapper
A capture whose argv names Subrouter without the launch marker is rerouted
to the fixed `sr codex resume <id>`, but managed-wrapper routing only
recognised the marker and config-proven prefixes. So SUBROUTER_CODEX_BIN
was never pointed at cmux's Codex wrapper: Subrouter ran the real Codex,
SessionStart didn't fire and the resumed session lost cmux's hooks. The
captured custom Codex executable was dropped for the same reason.
The planner now treats that fixed prefix like the other routed prefixes,
setting SUBROUTER_CODEX_BIN to the wrapper shim, CMUX_CUSTOM_CODEX_PATH to
the captured executable and the restore-launch authorization.

…reroute
A declared external launcher is skipped for routes cmux owns, but the check
recognised only the marker-based Subrouter route, so a markerless capture
rerouted to the fixed `sr codex resume` came back as `<launcher> sr codex
resume …`. Treat the fixed prefix as owned too.

Route config-proven Codex captures before the prepared fallback.
This issue applies when the empty captured launch has launcher: "codex". Config evidence can recognize that launch even when its argv is empty. The planner then returns plain prepared arguments before the routed sr codex resume plan is selected, and wrapper routing does not change them because it requires the arguments to already start with the routed prefix.
A nil launchCommand or nil launcher does not establish Codex identity from empty argv, so config routing does not apply in that case. Preserve the fallback for those ambiguous captures. For an explicitly identified Codex launch, evaluate config routing before preparedFallback and use the routed plan.
