📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win
The test does not reach the bounded-tail path it describes.
The fixture is one valid row followed by a 1 MiB unterminated suffix. The file is smaller than the 8 MiB maximumTailBytes budget. It also has fewer than 10,000 newlines. As a result, readTail and loadPage both read back to offset 0, and the partial-head removal never runs (readTail line 157, loadPage line 209). The test passes only because try? decoder.decode rejects the x row.
The change exists to bound startup reads on oversized logs. No test checks that path or the head-row drop.
Add one of these cases:
- Write an unterminated row that ends inside the budget and starts before the 8 MiB boundary.
- Write more than 10,000 rows.
For either case, assert three things:
snapshot.itemscontains the newest valid rows.snapshot.page.hasMoreBefore == true.snapshot.revisionequals the file size in bytes.

Keep legacy Subrouter input behind ownership-aware admission.
The gated path is reachable. Dock treats the legacy Codex binding as resumable even when auto-resume is disabled, builds sr codex resume, and stages it with deferred admission. A timed-out index refresh only marks the restore as .checking and retains it, so the surface can remain gated. A later complete index enters Dock’s cancellation branch when auto-resume is disabled instead of resolving the legacy input.
Do not exclude legacy input from deferred admission. That change makes the typed command the initial input and bypasses the deferred live-owner check. It can launch a second writer for a Codex session that is already running.
Update the deferred resolver instead. It must handle legacy Subrouter restores independently of the global auto-resume setting, perform the complete-index ownership check, and admit the typed input only after a no-owner result. A live owner must produce attach or notice input. A timeout or unavailable index must remain safely recoverable; it must not admit the resume without an ownership decision.

A crash snapshot can hold the same agent checkpoint in several panels, and on main each one started its own resume, so two processes wrote to one session. SurfaceResumeRunPromptBatch now records one owner per checkpoint for the enclosing restore pass. A panel claims a checkpoint only when it is about to start it, immediately or through deferred admission, and never when the session has a live owner or the panel is hibernated or attaches to a Claude background session, so those keep their existing paths. Every later panel with the same checkpoint is a duplicate: it starts nothing, keeps its snapshot and binding, and is marked duplicate-restore-owner with the resume command it would have run (the remote form for a remote workspace terminal). Panels that carry only an agent-hook binding are keyed by the binding's kind and checkpoint; multiplexer bindings (tmux, herdr) are not, since attaching one multiplexer session from several panes is normal. A panel that claimed a checkpoint and then fails to attach gives it back. Workspace and Dock restore apply the same rules. Outside a restore pass nothing changes. Taken from manaflow-ai#21423 and split out on current main, without its automatic-start cap. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

… restore Red tests for bounded session restore. Today an imported or runaway snapshot is decoded and replayed with only per-container caps, so a file can multiply them (12 windows x 128 workspaces x 512 panels = 786,432 panels) into a restore swarm, build an unbounded split graph, or replay unbounded scrollback. These tests pin what the next commit adds: - import refuses JSON nested past the decode limit, and empty files, before decoding; the app's own snapshot still loads with a several-MiB string; - untrusted imports clamp structural fan-out and scrollback before replay, and panel fan-out has a global budget; - trusted restore applies the global panel budget without stripping commands, deduplicates repeated panel IDs, bounds a skewed deep layout without overflowing the stack, reports panels cut off below the depth cap as dropped, and leaves ordinary layouts unchanged; - crash-time window copies are merged only on exact or fingerprinted matches, never by position, so unique workspaces are kept. Part of the #21423 series (part 1: #24206). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- SessionSnapshotRepository scans an import before Foundation decodes it: at most 256 MiB, JSON nesting 512, 1,000,000 structural tokens. String length is deliberately not limited, since the app's own snapshot can hold a large draft or scrollback string. - SessionPersistencePolicy adds global bounds: 4,096 panels per snapshot, 16,384 layout nodes and depth 512. Layout normalization is iterative, deduplicates panel IDs and records what it dropped (removedAny plus a breadcrumb) instead of dropping silently. - Crash storage merges duplicate crash-time windows only on exact or fingerprinted matches and leaves crash-only diagnostic state alone. - AppDelegate logs the counts so a refused or trimmed restore is diagnosable. Ports #21423's crash-duplicate window rules into CmuxWorkspaces as a pure matcher over a window signature (window ID, workspace count and IDs, agent checkpoint IDs, workspace titles), with tests for exact, fingerprinted and fuzzy duplicates and for near-misses that must stay separate. The new case fails: snapshots on a test Mac (2026-10-20) hold two windows with different window IDs, the same 41 titled workspaces, and every one of the first window's 44 agent checkpoints inside the second's 86. #21423's rules require equal window IDs, so they keep both copies. swift test --filter CrashDuplicateWindowMatcher: 12 pass, 1 fails. A crash can leave the same window in the session snapshot twice, and restoring both opens every workspace twice. Snapshots on a test Mac hold two windows with different window IDs, the same 41 titled workspaces, and every agent checkpoint of one inside the other (82 workspaces, 299 panels). CrashDuplicateWindowMatcher now also accepts windows with different IDs when they have the same workspace count and title multiset and every checkpoint of the smaller window (at least two) is in the other: one agent session runs in one place. Partial overlap, one shared checkpoint, other titles or counts, and untitled windows stay separate. The merge (#21423's, unchanged) runs only in restorePreviousSessionSnapshot. #21423 ran it inside pruningCmuxCrashDiagnosticWindows, whose result the manual-restore sync writes into the -previous backup on every launch and history recovery also uses; those paths now keep every window, so a wrong merge can't replace the only good copy. swift test --filter CrashDuplicateWindowMatcher: 13/13 (was 12/13). cmux-unit build-for-testing succeeds; cmuxTests not run locally.

Summary
Restored cmux sessions can lose their Subrouter routing evidence or start too many Ghostty surfaces at once. That left Codex restores at the missing

Makes large Subrouter session restores reliable, recovers Codex sessions killed with the app, and bounds feed startup recovery so damaged or oversized history cannot hang startup. Restored Codex and Claude sessions previously lost Subrouter routing evidence, spawned too many Ghostty surfaces at once, or stalled at missing credential prompts with high CPU and WindowServer load.
