Fix restore and fork when saved working directory is unusable - #25748
Restoring or forking an agent with a removed worktree, unmounted volume, or saved path that is now a file previously fell back to the caller's directory. The agent could resume against a different checkout. Both CLI commands now fail before launch and tell the user to repair the directory and retry.
The directory is applied once per launch attempt and passed to legacy execution, so relative paths are not resolved twice. Failed directory checks preserve Codex parent bindings and Claude bindings whose transcripts may return when a volume is remounted. Existing directories still permit cleanup of genuinely missing conversations.
Supersedes #24462, continuing Daniel Raffel's saved-directory guard with the original contributor commits and authorship retained.
Testing
Local checks pass: syntax for all eight changed Swift files, test wiring, Swift file budgets, localization audit/parity, and git diff --check.
Both new localization keys have translations for all 20 locales declared by the catalog.
Local checks and the conflict check pass. Current-head CI and focused native test execution are pending. The earlier green CLI product/Python regression lanes do not prove execution of these app-host Swift tests. No tests are disabled and no timeout or retry workaround is introduced.
Changelog
Fixed: Restore and fork stop when the saved working directory is unusable and preserve retryable session bindings.
Supersedes #24462. I reviewed the original change, merged origin/main, fixed legacy Codex fork binding loss when the saved directory is unusable, added regression coverage, removed raw saved paths from user-facing errors, and verified localization parity, Swift syntax, file budgets, and diff cleanliness. The original contributor PR is linked above.
Restore and fork stop when a saved working directory is missing or is not a directory. They report an error instead of falling back to the caller’s directory. Legacy Codex fork applies the requested directory before binding operations. Tests cover refusal and successful launch from an existing directory.
Restore and fork report missing or non-directory saved paths as errors. Localized messages instruct users to recreate or remount the directory.
Apply saved directories before launch CLI/CMUXCLI+Restore.swift, CLI/CMUXCLI+Fork.swift, CLI/CMUXCLI+CodexResumeBindingVerification.swift, CLI/CMUXCLI+ForkExecution.swift
Restore and fork use the applied working directory without falling back to the invocation directory. Legacy Codex fork applies the directory before binding operations. The binding comment now covers missing and inaccessible paths.
Validate restore and fork behavior cmuxTests/CMUXCLIMissingWorkingDirectoryTests.swift, cmuxTests/CMUXCLIErrorOutputRegressionTests.swift, cmux.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj
Tests check refusal without launch for unusable paths, preservation of the binding, and successful legacy fork from an existing directory. The Xcode project registers the new test file.
manaflow-ai/cmux#24490: It changes legacy Codex restore planning, while this PR validates the saved directory before that restore path runs.
manaflow-ai/cmux#25187: It changes a regression-test fixture that this PR updates for missing-directory behavior.

Some restore attempts can either lose their retryable binding or fail to launch from a relative saved directory; both issues should be fixed before merging.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input
Explanation
PASS: The pull request does not change Cloud terminal creation, persistent cmux-tui transport, manual renderer admission, or early-input handling. The reviewed diff is limited to saved working-directory validation for restore/fork, Codex binding retention, localization, and regression tests. It introduces no new client, transport, readiness gate, input-routing change, or auth/revision/lease change covered by the rule.
Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation
Explanation
PASS. The production diff changes existing CMUXCLI command and execution helpers and adds a ForkErrorKind case. It introduces no new model or service protocol, Sendable reference type, UI-bound store access, or actor annotation. CMUXCLI remains a plain struct (CLI/cmux.swift:4800), and the changed production files contain no new isolation-sensitive declarations. The added test file is test-only.
Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime
Explanation
PASS. The production Swift diff adds directory validation and changes working-directory argument flow. It does not add semaphores, blocking waits, sleeps, delayed dispatch, polling, main-queue sync, or manual locks. The new .serialized suite and 15-second process timeout are test-only scaffolding, which the rule allows.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only CLI restore/fork handling, localization, project wiring, and regression tests. The authoritative diff contains no browser.* commands or changes to Sources/TerminalController.swift, ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift, socketWorkerMethods, processV2Command, WebKit, or AppKit routing. Therefore the browser automation off-main rule is not applicable, and no existing browser debt is worsened.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
The production diff adds only saved-directory validation, localized errors, and propagation of the already-applied directory to fork launch paths. It adds no synchronous agent-history loader, transcript/store load, broad scan, or large JSON/JSONL parse to production Swift. The existing seedClaudeTranscriptForForkIfNeeded call remains in its prior fork flow. New JSONSerialization use is confined to test fixtures.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
No cache substitution is introduced. The production diff only changes saved-working-directory validation: restore and fork now throw for ENOENT/ENOTDIR, and fork reuses the directory result after one chdir. It does not replace a fresh authoritative read with a cached or opportunistic value in a persistence, history, undo, or snapshot path.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only Swift sources/tests, localization resources, and the Xcode project file. It does not change TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or non-Swift build/runtime scripts covered by this check. Therefore, the no-hacky-sleeps failure condition is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
The production diff adds scalar chdir validation, error handling, and passes the applied directory to existing fork/restore paths. It does not add nested scans, per-target rescans, repeated sorting/filtering, in-memory joins, or a slower algorithm over scalable collections. The only visible production loop remains the pre-existing fork preflight iteration.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
PASS: The Swift diff adds synchronous working-directory validation and reuses its result for fork execution. Added Swift lines introduce no background Dispatch queues, Combine state, completion-handler APIs, or fire-and-forget Tasks. The added tests use no legacy async pattern.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
No Swift concurrency annotation violation is introduced. The diff changes synchronous directory handling and moves an existing applyForkWorkingDirectory call in runForkCommand; it adds no async, nonisolated, @MainActor, or @concurrent declarations. CMUXCLI is a plain struct, and the CLI entry point is not UI-isolated. The existing @concurrent Hermes helper is unchanged.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
The production diff stays in CLI restore/fork execution glue. applyRestoreWorkingDirectory and applyForkWorkingDirectory call chdir, map errno to localized CLIError, and coordinate CMUXCLI process execution and Codex binding state (CLI/CMUXCLI+RestoreExecution.swift:5-41, CLI/CMUXCLI+ForkExecution.swift:11-145). This logic is command-specific and is not a reusable cross-surface domain API. The existing CMUXAgentLaunch package already owns reusable working-directory selection (AgentResumeWorkingDirectory), and the new Swift file is test code.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
No SwiftPM lockfile policy condition is triggered. The PR changes no Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, workflow, or dependency file. The cmux.xcodeproj change only adds CMUXCLIMissingWorkingDirectoryTests.swift to the project; it does not change package references. The root Xcode Package.resolved is tracked and unchanged.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
The changed production Swift code uses the existing OSLog-based restoreFailureLogger and forkFailureLogger. New working-directory details pass through privacy: .private(mask: .hash). The diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, ad hoc file logging, or new file-scoped Logger. Test harness output is allowed, and the new localized strings are CLI output rather than diagnostics.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
PASS — The changed errors reach cmux CLI users through runRestoreCommand/runForkCommand and the CLIError stderr boundary. The new restore and fork messages contain only generic directory state and recovery commands (cmux restore --surface / cmux fork --surface). They expose no vendor, provider, flag-internal detail, raw path, secret, token, or payload. Saved paths go only to hashed private log details, while CLIError returns the sanitized localized message. All added locale values follow the same safe wording.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
The production changes route both new errors through String(localized:defaultValue:) with keys cli.restore.error.workingDirectoryMissing and cli.fork.error.workingDirectoryMissing. Resources/Localizable.xcstrings adds translated, non-empty entries for all 20 existing locales, with no locale omissions or copied English values. Other Swift changes are control flow or developer comments, and test changes are allowed.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes CLI logic, localization, project wiring, and CLI tests. It introduces no SwiftUI views or SwiftUI state/layout changes, so the specified SwiftUI state-layout failure conditions do not apply.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
PASS. The Swift changes are small local correctness fixes in the CLI working-directory path. They add no sleeps, delayed dispatch, polling, locks, observers, mutable side channels, or UI lifecycle owners. applyRestoreWorkingDirectory and applyForkWorkingDirectory now fail closed for missing paths, and fork applies the directory once before binding mutation while sharing the result with both launch paths. The added comments state the invariant: do not launch from a different checkout, and retain the binding for retry. The synchronization shown is test-only.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
PASS. The Swift diff changes CLI restore/fork logic and test fixtures only. It adds or modifies no NSWindow, NSPanel, NSWindowController, SwiftUI Window, WindowGroup, or auxiliary-window identifier code. The test-only fixture is explicitly allowed by the rule, so no close-shortcut ownership issue applies.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
All nine changed paths are intentional Swift source, tests, localization, or Xcode project configuration. The added test is a checked-in test fixture that creates temporary files and sockets only at runtime; it does not add temp output to source control. No screenshots, logs, caches, build output, dependency checkouts, or broad artifact directories appear in the diff.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes no Swift file under a **/Sources/** path. The changed production Swift files are under CLI/, and the new or modified Swift tests are under cmuxTests/. Therefore, this check's production-source test/debug seam condition is not applicable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description includes a specific Summary, detailed Testing results, an Observed / Not run section, and a user-facing Changelog. It omits the Proof and Checklist sections from the repository template, but the required change rationale, validation status, and known limitations are otherwise clear and complete.

Current closeout: head f6f1b35 is MERGEABLE. Completed CI checks are green, including fast guards, catalog structure, workflow guards, security, CLA, and static checks. The remaining macOS compile admission check is queued on the hosted runner. Local validation passes Swift syntax, file-length budget, localization parity, and diff checks; test-wiring’s repository harness was interrupted after its individual wiring/lint checks passed because this checkout is under severe disk pressure. The fleet focused test wrapper was rejected as an unsupported CI step and reported through fleet feedback.
Final code update: pushed feaeb89 after moving the new directory-guard behavior coverage into the dedicated CMUXCLIMissingWorkingDirectoryTests suite and restoring the inherited large test files to their main versions. This keeps Swift file budgets within baseline while retaining coverage. Local gates pass: Swift syntax, localization parity, file-length budget, diff cleanliness, and merge-tree conflict check.
CI note for final head feaeb89: all completed non-CLA checks are green or skipped appropriately. The hosted macOS compile admission remains queued. CLA Assistant is green; CLA policy guard is red with its generic policy-rejected result even though the diff contains no CLA policy/workflow files and the validator reports all 12 internal regression matrices passing. This appears to be a guard false positive/infrastructure policy-state issue, so I did not modify unrelated CLA policy files.

Do not suppress the saved-directory error in the missing-transcript branch.
When the transcript is missing and the saved directory is unusable, try? suppresses the directory error. The handler can then clear the Claude binding and report only claude.restore.transcript-missing. Propagate the directory error before clearing the binding so the user can repair the directory and retry.

When the saved working directory of an agent restore is gone, cmux restore
launches the agent from the caller's directory and rewrites its --cwd
argument to that directory. The agent then resumes against a different
checkout, and a provider that keys sessions by directory (Claude) reports a
valid session as missing. This test expects the restore to refuse before
launching anything. It fails on main, which exits 0 and launches the agent.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
applyRestoreWorkingDirectory treated a saved directory that had been removed
(ENOENT/ENOTDIR) as "fall back to the caller's directory": cmux restore then
launched the agent there and rewrote its --cwd. The resumed agent worked in a
different checkout, and a provider that keys sessions by directory reported a
valid session as missing. A missing saved directory now fails before anything
is launched, with its own message (cli.restore.error.workingDirectoryMissing,
all nine locales) telling the user to recreate or remount it. Any other chdir
failure keeps the existing "inaccessible" error, and an existing directory
restores as before. The Codex resume-binding check now also keeps the binding
when the saved directory is missing, as its comment already intended for an
unusable path.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… guard
The restore refusal must name the missing path and the command to retry
('cmux restore --surface'), for a removed directory and for a path that is
now a file (ENOTDIR). cmux fork must refuse the same way instead of forking
into the caller's directory, which it does today. A Codex restore whose
checkpoint is missing and whose saved directory is gone must keep its
resume binding (no surface.resume.clear), so the user can recreate the
directory and retry.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The missing-directory refusal now names the path and the retry command
('cmux restore --surface'). cmux fork gets the same guard: a saved directory
that no longer exists (ENOENT or ENOTDIR) fails with its own message
(cli.fork.error.workingDirectoryMissing) instead of forking into the
caller's directory. Both messages are in all nine catalog locales.
Since a requested directory is now either entered or refused, the
'?? currentDirectoryPath' fallbacks in restore and fork are gone, and the
comments that described that fallback are corrected.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The path in both missing-directory messages is now quoted, in each locale's
usual style ('%@', „%@“, « %@ », 「%@」, “%@”), so a path with spaces reads
as one value. The tests expect the quoted form.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The same message covers ENOTDIR, where the saved path exists but isn't a
directory, so "no longer exists" was wrong there. Both errors now say the
directory is missing or is not a directory and ask for it to be recreated or
remounted as a directory before rerunning the command. All nine locales are
updated, and the tests expect the new text.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both restore fixtures assert the English catalog text of the new
working-directory error. Set AppleLanguages, AppleLocale, LANG and LC_ALL
the way the fork test's isolatedCLIEnvironment does, so they pass on a
non-English host.

Addressed the CodeRabbit outside-diff finding: the missing-Claude-transcript handler now propagates an unusable-directory error before clearing the binding. Parameterized tests retain the binding for missing/file paths and still clear it when the directory exists and the transcript is genuinely absent.
Removed repeated directory changes in both legacy launch paths. Restore and fork enter the directory once before launch/binding mutation and pass that result to the execution helper. New tests cover absolute and relative existing paths as well as missing/file refusals.
Updated the existing prepared-argv fallback regression to the deliberate refusal contract, preserving its fake-agent launch oracle and isolating HOME and locale. No tests are disabled, and no production waits, retries, or timeout changes were added.
Both localization keys have all 20 catalog locales, with no removed-placeholder remnants. The resolved inline CodeRabbit finding and internationalization summary are addressed. The optional docstring-coverage warning is not a correctness gate; comments now document the ownership and binding-preservation invariants.
Local syntax (8 changed Swift files), test wiring (1,318 files), localization parity, file budgets, and merge-tree checks pass. Current-head native execution and the final structured review are still pending; I have not marked this ready for review.
Propagate the saved-directory refusal before clearing the Claude binding.
When the transcript-missing handler runs and the saved directory is ENOENT or ENOTDIR, try? discards the refusal. The guarded binding is then cleared, and the handler reports only conversation-not-found. This hides the repair-and-retry path defined by the restore contract.

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.
Ready for review: root cause was that restore/fork treated ENOENT/ENOTDIR for a captured working directory as permission to continue from the caller's directory, with legacy execution reapplying relative paths and Claude transcript recovery suppressing the same refusal before clearing its binding; fix rejects unusable saved directories before launch, applies a saved directory exactly once, passes the applied directory into legacy execution, and preserves Codex/Claude bindings for repair-and-retry; tests include current-head CI execution of 105 tests across CMUXCLIErrorOutputRegressionTests and CMUXCLIMissingWorkingDirectoryTests, three CLI regression shards passing, pre-fix infrastructure evidence, syntax/wiring/file-budget/localization/conflict checks, and an independent final audit; confidence high.
