docs(observability): use one table format and mark stability in the Metrics Catalog - #17922
The Metrics Catalog showed 95 metrics as cards and 208 as table rows, and showed labels and stability differently in each format. This PR puts every metric in one table format, Metric | Type | Labels | Description | Status, where Status marks only experimental and deprecated metrics and is empty for stable ones. It also deprecates 12 metrics that are never updated or that another metric reproduces exactly, and fixes the entries that did not match the code.
Key Changes
Documentation in docs/fern/pages/reference/observability/metrics-catalog.mdx, plus one Grafana panel.
One table format (30811d7): the 95 cards became table rows, and long caveats moved into notes under each table. The mocker and KV cache reuse sections use the same columns.
Status (5632f69, d328427): Status is Experimental (75) or Deprecated (12), and empty for the 233 stable metrics. It is plain text.
Experimental now also covers the mocker metrics, which copy engine metric names, and the 12 metrics that first ship in 1.7.0: dynamo_frontend_worker_active_requests, dynamo_frontend_router_workers, dynamo_frontend_router_worker_state, the 7 dynamo_backend_admission_* metrics, dynamo_planner_signal_unavailable, and dynamo_planner_degraded_signals_total.
dynamo_frontend_queued_requests is no longer deprecated. Its stated replacement, the sum of dynamo_frontend_stage_requests, does not reproduce it, and neither does dynamo_frontend_awaiting_first_token_requests, which also counts requests during validation and System One requests.
Each deprecated row names its replacement:
Deprecated metric
Replacement
dynamo_frontend_inflight_requests
dynamo_frontend_active_requests, which has the same value
dynamo_frontend_disconnected_clients
dynamo_frontend_model_cancellation_total, summed over its labels
dynamo_frontend_event_loop_stall_total
dynamo_frontend_event_loop_delay_seconds_count minus its le="0.005" bucket
dynamo_tokio_worker_busy_ratio
dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns; the deprecated metric is a rescaled poll time, not a busy ratio
Review fixes (1ee7b0f): every deprecated row names its replacement the same way ("Use X"), a label that every metric in a table carries is named once in the section introduction, and the mocker metrics are split into one table per --engine-type. The Tokio panel of dev/observability/grafana_dashboards/sglang.json now charts dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns; it charted the deprecated busy ratio with a 0-1 threshold and a percent unit, which did not fit the metric's 0-1000 values.
Check against the code (5d17128): every row and note was checked against the code on main, and the 34 entries that differed were fixed. This adds the 16 dynamo_planner_retune_* metrics, which feat(planner): live retune from recorded traces through DGDR v1beta2 #17483 added without catalog entries, as Experimental rows, and corrects descriptions, label sets, and the notes on what --kserve-grpc-server exposes.
320, each listed once: every metric in main's catalog, plus the 16 retune metrics it lacked

Before the deprecated metrics are removed, these in-repo readers need to move to the replacements: benchmarks/frontend/scripts/analysis/ (dynamo_tokio_worker_busy_ratio, dynamo_frontend_event_loop_stall_total) and tests/fault_tolerance/migration/test_trtllm.py (trtllm_kv_transfer_success_total).
Code behavior found while checking the page, not changed here: python -m dynamo.vllm forces disable_log_stats off, so --disable-log-stats has no effect; dynamo_planner_plugin_latency_seconds records, for every plugin in a concurrent stage, the time until the slowest one finishes; and dynamo_component_kv_publisher_engines_dropped_events_total does not count gaps in the engine's own sequence numbers on the ZMQ path.
DIS-3294 tracks a CI check of the catalog against the metric names in the code.
Convert the 95 metric cards to rows of the Metric | Type | Labels |

move long caveats into notes under each table. The mocker and KV
cache reuse sections use the same columns.
No metric is added, removed, or renamed: the page lists the same 303
metrics, each once, with the statuses it had before.

Show Status as a badge: Stable, Experimental, or Deprecated.
Deprecate 12 metrics that are never updated or that another metric
reproduces exactly, and name the replacement in each description. For
example, dynamo_frontend_disconnected_clients equals
dynamo_frontend_model_cancellation_total summed over its labels.
Mark 90 rows Check or Medium for review. These are candidates to fold
into a labeled metric, collapse into a config metric, or derive from
another metric, where the replacement does not exist yet or is
approximate. The two markers are temporary and must be resolved before
merge.
Mocker metrics copy engine metric names, so they are Experimental.

The SGLang Grafana dashboard replaces the Tokio worker busy-ratio panel metric with mean poll time in nanoseconds. The panel continues to group its series by worker.
Changes
Tokio worker metric
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Update the Tokio worker panel dev/observability/grafana_dashboards/sglang.json
The panel title and description identify mean poll time in nanoseconds. Its unit is ns, and its query averages dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns by worker.
The title describes Metrics Catalog table and stability documentation changes, but the provided changeset only updates a Grafana panel to use dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns.
Update the title to describe the Grafana dashboard metric change, such as fix(observability): chart Tokio worker mean poll time in Grafana. Restore the documentation changes if the current title is intended.

Mark only experimental and deprecated metrics in the Metrics Catalog: a
stable metric now has an empty Status cell, and the status is plain text
instead of a Badge component. The temporary Check and Medium markers are
gone, and the 12 metrics that first ship in 1.7.0 are marked Experimental.
dynamo_frontend_queued_requests is no longer described as replaced by the
sum of dynamo_frontend_stage_requests, which does not reproduce it.

P0:dynamo_backend_admission_engine_wait_count doesn't appear anywhere in the code. lib/llm/src/admission_gate/metrics.rs doesn't exist in v1.6.1, and release/1.7.0 defines only engine_request_waiting_count. The PR also lists this metric as new in 1.7.0, so readers would look for a predecessor that no release ever emitted. Suggest deleting "Replaces dynamo_backend_admission_engine_wait_count."

P0: The description matches the code (tokio_perf.rs:443). However, dev/observability/grafana_dashboards/sglang.json still charts avg by (worker) (dynamo_tokio_worker_busy_ratio) and describes it as ">0.9 sustained means runtime is starved". That threshold is wrong on a 0–1000 scale. benchmarks/frontend/scripts/analysis/* also reads this metric. Please fix the dashboard in this PR, or open a follow-up issue and link it from the PR description, so the docs and the shipped dashboard don't disagree.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 1ee7b0f. The SGLang dashboard panel now charts avg by (worker) (dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns) in nanoseconds, and its description says sustained values near 1 ms or more mean the runtime is starved. The old panel also used the percentunit unit, so it showed the 0-1000 value as a percentage of 1. The benchmark analysis scripts divide the value by 1000 before applying their 0.5 and 0.95 thresholds, so they read it correctly; the PR description now lists them, with the other in-repo readers, to move before the metric is removed.

P1: "Equals <expr>; use that instead" doesn't make clear whether readers should use the expression or a metric. The same pattern appears on L279, L644, and L658. On L279 the problem is worse: the sentence names mean_poll_time_ns and then gives a PromQL rebuild, so "that" could refer to either. Also, / 1e9 / 0.001 simplifies to / 1e6.
Suggest using one pattern for all 12 deprecated rows: "Use <replacement>." followed by the equivalence when needed. For L279:
Mean poll time rescaled to 0–1000 (1 ms or more reads 1000); it does not measure busy time. Use dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns. The old value is floor(clamp_max(dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns / 1e6, 1) * 1000).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 1ee7b0f. All 12 deprecated rows now say "Use X", followed by "which has the same value" or "The old value is <PromQL>" when a query is needed. The busy ratio row uses your wording, with / 1e6.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
P1: L33 says a deprecated metric's "description names the replacement", but this row and dynamo_kvrouter_ckf_mutation_total (L679) don't name one. Suggest adding: "No replacement; remove it from dashboards and alerts."
| `dynamo_component_router_remote_indexer_query_failures_total` | counter | `router_id` | Failed overlap queries to a remote indexer. Only with `--use-remote-indexer`. | |

`dynamo_component_kv_cache_events_applied` appears when the worker-selection policy requests `WorkerInputs::CACHE`, the router consumes KV events, and workers publish them. The standalone indexer exposes the device-tier-only counter `dynamo_kvrouter_kv_cache_events_applied` and the same CKF counter as `dynamo_kvrouter_ckf_mutation_total`; see [Standalone KV Indexer Metrics](#standalone-kv-indexer-metrics).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
P1: This sentence points readers to dynamo_kvrouter_ckf_mutation_total, which is deprecated and always zero. The availability matrix also still gives dynamo_component_ckf_mutation_total a full row (L577), and its legend says always-zero metrics are "useful for dashboards that expect it to exist". Suggest cutting the CKF clause here and dropping the matrix row, since the Status column already covers it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 1ee7b0f: cut the CKF clause and dropped the matrix row. The "Registered, always zero" key stays because the dynamo_router_overhead_* row still uses it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
P1: The Labels column puts dp_rank on this row and the next two. L363 says unified-backend workers use "the automatic labels plus model and model_name", which doesn't include dp_rank. Either note "vLLM/SGLang/TRT-LLM only" in these cells, or move dp_rank into the L362 bullet and set the cells to —.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The mismatch was real, but the cells were right and the bullet was wrong. Both worker types put dp_rank only on these three per-rank gauges (lib/backend-common/src/metrics.rs:190-220 for unified backends, components/src/dynamo/common/utils/prometheus.py:503-523 for vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM), and model_load_time_seconds has no dp_rank for either. So in 1ee7b0f I removed dp_rank from the vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM bullet and kept it in the cells.

Changed to "need no extra flag beyond --router-mode kv" in 1ee7b0f. The code agrees: the counters are recorded only for requests the KV path routes (lib/llm/src/kv_router/routing_host/request_guard.rs:653).

Done in 1ee7b0f, following the rule on L32: a label that every metric in a table carries is now named once in the section introduction. Migration, Cancellation and Rejection, Router Worker Inventory, LoRA Allocation, and Backend Admission had the same pattern as the three you listed, so I changed them too.
The mocker (`python -m dynamo.mocker`) simulates an inference engine. It emits imitation engine metrics with simulated values on `DYN_SYSTEM_PORT`, choosing the set by `--engine-type`. They carry the engine's usual labels plus `dynamo_namespace`, `dynamo_component`, `dynamo_endpoint`, `worker_id`, `model`, and `model_name`. These imitate engine metrics: each one means what it means in the engine it imitates, and the description names the `--engine-type` that emits it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
P2: This table has 22 rows whose descriptions are nearly the same ("Simulated; emitted with --engine-type X"). One option is three short lists, one per --engine-type, plus a single sentence saying they're simulated and Experimental. Also, L33 defines Experimental as "name or meaning may change". These rows really mean "imitates the engine's metric", which stretches that definition. A one-line note on how Status applies here would help.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
In 1ee7b0f I split it into one table per --engine-type, each with a lead-in line, and replaced the repeated text with what each metric measures, taken from the mocker's help strings. I kept tables rather than lists so every metric on the page has the same columns. The section introduction now says the rows are Experimental because their names follow the engines' metric names, which Dynamo does not control.
- Name each deprecated metric's replacement the same way ("Use X"), with
the PromQL for its old value where needed. The CKF counters have no
replacement.
- List a label that every metric in a table carries once, in the section
introduction.
- Drop the replacement claim for an admission metric that no release
emitted, the repeated metric-family sentence, and the CKF row of the
availability matrix. Keep dp_rank per metric in Engine State: both worker
types put it only on the three per-rank gauges.
- Split the mocker table by --engine-type, describe what each metric
measures, and say why the rows are Experimental.
- Chart dynamo_tokio_worker_mean_poll_time_ns instead of the deprecated
busy ratio in the SGLang dashboard, whose 0-1 threshold and percent unit
did not fit the 0-1000 values.

Align the description with the documented metric semantics.
The catalog defines this metric as mean task poll time in nanoseconds. It does not define “near 1 ms or more” as proof that the runtime is starved. Use the documented description, or add and validate this threshold in the Metrics Catalog before using it here.
As per coding guidelines, the Metrics Catalog is the source of truth for metric documentation.
