feat(global-router): replicate bookings and session pins between frontends - #17599
Third of three PRs (stacked on #17598, which is on #17597). With --replica-sync --replica-sync-port <port> and --peer tcp://host:port (repeatable), each Global Frontend's core shares its bookings and session pins with the other Global Frontends. What benefits: --router-policy least-requests counts the peers' requests in flight, and affinity honours a session pin made on another replica. The affinity picker's load ranking still comes from the Pool Relay's occupancy corrected by this process's own in-flight count, not from the replicated bookings; feeding those in (a snapshot of the core's booked count at each Relay report, then the delta) is a follow-up. Only --selection-core takes the flags.
This uses the core's built-in replica mesh (ZMQ PUB/SUB, one topic for the request ledger and one for session bindings). It is the prototype transport: the core exposes the same events through host-side channels (HostReplicaChannels, session_binding_updates / apply_session_binding), so a gRPC transport can replace it behind the same seam without a core change. That swap is a follow-up.

ReplicaSync { port, peers } on CoreSelector::new; CoreSelector::register_peer admits a peer found later.
global-frontend: --replica-sync switch (needs --selection-core and --replica-sync-port); --replica-sync-port and --peer (tcp://host:port only) need --replica-sync. clap enforces the rules.
Design: DEP #17639 (replica sync between Global Frontends, this PR is its phase C1) on DEP #17638 (pools as router-core workers). Stack: #17597 → #17598 → this PR.
Testing
Two-core tests on free ports, each subscribed to the other: bookings made through A steer least-requests on B and vice versa; a session A pins is honoured by B, and the pin moving on B is seen by A.
Live test 2026-10-29 on a two-replica StatefulSet (headless service, --replica-sync --replica-sync-port 5600, each pod --peer the other) over a mocker pool with the PoolRelay from main: both replicas shared one booking counter during a 16-session burst (replica 0 logged bookings 12, 13, 14 and replica 1 logged 9, 15, 16 within the same 200 ms); the affinity picker's placement log (added in 5c736821) showed the pool's relay occupancy moving with load (slots=0.06 → 0.44).
4 jobs failed: the frontend EPP image build hit a Cargo registry unpack error on arm64, both dynamo-runtime CPU lanes could not find go for the same upgrade-snapshot test, and the vLLM GPU test container exited with code 137 before completing.

The arm64 cargo build --release -p dynamo-ext-proc cannot unpack color_quant in the mounted Cargo registry cache because its .cargo-ok file already exists; the later missing /epp, SBOM and license-directory errors follow the failed build. This is a build-cache infrastructure signature, so a rerun of this failed job is likely enough.

MissingOriginFixtureTest::test_final_export_ignores_server_metadata_only calls export_snapshot, which launches go run ./hack/normalize_upgrade_snapshot, but go is unavailable in the CPU test environment. The same failure persists through the logged retries; the later CPU E2E and GPU stages do not run, so rerunning without making Go available would not address this error.

`--selection core` routes each request through the router core
(`dynamo-kv-router`) with each pool registered as one of its workers and
the Global Router's policies as its plugins: `PoolCatalogSource` mirrors
the pool catalog into the core's worker set, `CoreSelector` books each
request with `select_and_reserve` and hands the forwarder a
`Reservation` that marks prefill complete on the first response chunk
and frees the booking when the stream ends, and `RoundRobinPicker` and
`LeastRequestsPicker` are the two policies as pickers. `RequestSelector`
is the forwarder's view of a selector, async and holding per-request
state; every `PoolSelector` is one through a blanket impl.
The legacy path is unchanged and stays the default. `affinity` on the
core path comes next. Parity tests replay the legacy selectors' cases
through the core.

…ool snapshot
The core follower was spawned and the listener served at once, so a request in
the first milliseconds could find no workers and get a spurious 503.
CoreSelector::follow now also returns a receiver that resolves once the core has
taken the first snapshot and come back for the next; main awaits it before
binding the listener and fails if the follower ends first.
Also drops the doc and inline comments the review found redundant.

…ry; retire the mesh flags
C2c, the last PR of the replica-sync stack for DEP #17639 (companion
(contract + conversions), on C1 #17599 (core selection path).
Replicas now find each other through Global Discovery instead of static
addresses, the gRPC `ReplicaSync` stream is served from startup even with
zero peers (closing C2b's bootstrap gap, where a replica had to know a
peer before it could be dialed), and the binary stops exposing the core's
ZMQ mesh.
Flags (lib/global-frontend):
- `--replica-sync off|grpc` (default off). `grpc` needs `--selection
core` and serves the stream with or without peers.
- `--global-discovery <URL>`: base URL of Global Discovery; every entry
of `GET /routers` but `--replica-url` becomes a peer, polled every 30 s
(the frontend's round-trip cadence) and followed as it changes.
Implies `--replica-sync grpc`; needs `--replica-url`.
- `--replica-url <URL>`: this frontend's own API URL as discovery lists
it, so it does not dial itself. Needs `--global-discovery`.
- `--peer http://host:port`: a static peer; implies `grpc`; never
removed by discovery.
- `--replica-sync off` given with `--peer` or `--global-discovery` is an
error. `--replica-sync-port` and `tcp://` peers are gone; the core
library keeps `ReplicaTransport::Mesh` and its tests.
Where the pieces live: `dynamo_global_frontend::poll_replica_peers`
polls discovery (the frontend already depends on reqwest through the
discovery client's sibling crates; the router crate does not) and
publishes the peer set on a `watch` channel; the router side
(`replica_sync::discovery::follow_peer_set`, via
`CoreSelector::follow_peers`) applies each set to the hub, pinning the
peers present at start and skipping non-`http://` entries with a warning.
A failed poll keeps the last set and logs once per failure streak.
TLS: neither the Relay client nor replica sync has it (the workspace's
tonic carries no TLS feature), so `https://` peers stay refused with a
clear message; the README says both will gain TLS together.

HeadroomPicker ranks pools by PoolSignals::occupancy, which corrects the last Relay report with this process's InFlightTracker only. The bookings this PR replicates sit in the core, but this picker never reads them (it doesn't request WorkerInputs::LOAD), so between Relay reports each replica sees only its own sends, and replicas reading the same report all place new sessions on the same emptiest pool until the next one lands.
Snapshotting the core's booked count when each report arrives and using that delta, instead of the local tracker, would let affinity use the sync. Otherwise, the description should say that only least-requests and session pins benefit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Correct, and deliberate for this step: the affinity picker ranks on Relay occupancy corrected by this process's in-flight count, because the Relay is the authoritative load source in the design; replica sync here gives affinity agreement on pins and least-requests the shared count. The description overstated that; fixed to say exactly what benefits. Your snapshot-and-delta idea (the core's booked count at each report, then the delta) is the right way to let affinity use the sync without double counting against the Relay, and I'd do it as its own PR with a test that shows two replicas spreading new sessions between reports.

region is cloned for every candidate on every pick, only for the log, and this picker runs on the model's admission actor. Borrow the PoolEntry from the snapshot instead. Make the placement log below trace!: when it is on, describe() builds several strings per candidate on the one task every pick waits on.

This should be trace!. When it is on, booked() computes the loads of every pool of the model under the slot locks the actor books with, once per request.
…n drop
Nothing in the stack reads prefill state, and the call cost a spawn, a
reservation lookup and a sequence write lock per request. The lifecycle
trait is a marker; the proxy no longer tracks the first chunk.

The host supplies request leases to the core, which then keeps a booking
until the frontend frees it (response end, client gone, drop) instead of
expiring it by age. A response longer than the core's default five
minutes no longer vanishes from least-requests while it streams.

Whether a policy books is stated by its plugin: a picker that declares
`WorkerInputs::LOAD` in `required_worker_inputs` ranks by the requests
booked on each worker, so its picks are booked; any other picker's picks
are advisory. Least-requests declares it, round-robin does not, so
behaviour is unchanged and a new picker needs no host change.

…path
`--router-policy affinity` now runs on `--selection core` too. The core
keeps the session table (soft mode, idle TTL from `--session-idle-secs`)
and `HeadroomPicker` ports the legacy placement rule over it: candidates
ordered by region distance then occupancy, a session stays on its pool
unless another has more than `--headroom-factor` times the spare room,
and a pool whose load is unknown counts as full. Occupancy and round
trips reach the picker through `PoolSignals` and a `PoolDirectory` that
maps the core's worker ids back to pools and regions, filled by the
catalog source as it registers workers.
The legacy path is unchanged and stays the default. The core tests
replay the `AffinitySelector` cases to show the same pool is picked for
the same inputs.

…ent error
The core's session table refuses ids over MAX_SESSION_AFFINITY_ID_BYTES; routed
through CoreSelector::route that became a 503 "no pool can serve model" and
invited retries. The proxy now checks the header before selection and answers
400, on both selection paths. MAX_SESSION_ID_BYTES is re-exported from
dynamo-global-router. Also drops two comments the review found redundant.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The core binds a session only on a booking, and a pin's idle time runs
from its last booking's release. Affinity now books a session's first
request, any request the picker moves, and at least one request per half
idle window (tracked host-side, bounded like the core's table); every
other request, and every request without a session, picks with an
advisory `select` that honours the pin and books nothing. The picker
reads pool load from the Relays, not from bookings, so placement does not
change.

…tends
`--replica-sync-port <port>` and `--peer tcp://host:port` (repeatable)
put the core on its built-in replica mesh, so each Global Frontend sees
the requests the others have booked and the pools they have pinned
sessions to. `CoreSelector::register_peer` admits peers found later.
Only `--selection core` takes the flags.
This is the prototype transport; the gRPC transport the DEP calls for
replaces it behind the same seam. Two-core tests show a peer's bookings
steer least-requests and a peer's pin steers affinity, in both
directions.

At debug, the core path logs the pool it picked for a request, its
session, and how many requests are booked on that pool, which with
replica sync includes the peers' bookings. That makes the shared state
visible from any one replica's log.

Each pick logs, at debug, every candidate's region, slot and KV occupancy
as the Relay reports it, and the round trip to its region, with the
default and the choice. Shows on a live cluster what the picker knew.

…n path
The affinity picker borrows the pool entry from the directory snapshot
instead of cloning its region per candidate, and both placement logs are
trace level. `booked()` is test-only again.

…he mesh keeps the core's expiry
--replica-sync turns sharing on and needs --selection-core and
--replica-sync-port; the port and --peer need --replica-sync. The parser
enforces all of it.
Over the mesh, peers' bookings arrive with nothing here to end one whose
peer is lost, so the core keeps its age-based expiry when replicating.
Host-owned leases apply only when nothing is mirrored.

Where the pieces live: `dynamo_global_frontend::poll_replica_peers`
polls discovery (the frontend already depends on reqwest through the
discovery client's sibling crates; the router crate does not) and
publishes the peer set on a `watch` channel; the router side
(`replica_sync::discovery::follow_peer_set`, via

Summary
Router replica configuration and synchronization lib/global-router/src/core/mod.rs, lib/global-router/src/lib.rs
CoreSelector::new accepts optional ReplicaSync configuration. The router can register peers and synchronize bookings and session pins. Tests cover shared bookings and affinity pins across replicas.
The frontend adds --replica-sync, --replica-sync-port, and repeatable --peer options. It validates peer addresses and passes the optional configuration to CoreSelector.
Pool candidate snapshots and traces lib/global-router/src/core/policies.rs
The picker passes a directory snapshot to candidate placement. Candidate descriptions include pool and occupancy details, and a trace event records candidate ordering and selection information.
Replica synchronization can route using incomplete state and expose session metadata to reachable subscribers. These issues should be addressed before merge.

Transfer existing replica state when a peer connects.
register_peer only calls socket.connect, and the PUB socket sends each booking and affinity event once. A peer that joins late, or misses events during a disconnect, cannot recover the existing booking or session pin. Least-requests routing can then omit remote bookings, and affinity routing can omit remote pins. Add a connection handshake or replay mechanism that transfers both active bookings and session bindings.

With replica sync, bookings for requests older than 300 seconds are expired while the request still runs.
With --replica-sync, the core keeps the 300-second age-based booking expiry. Host reservation leases are not installed, so the frontend's Reservation no longer controls how long a booking lasts. A request that runs longer than the expiry window loses its local booking, and the peers' mirrors of that booking expire too. --router-policy least-requests then stops counting that request as in flight, so new requests can be sent to a pool that is still busy. Without replica sync, the ReservationLeases observer disables age expiry, and the booking lasts until the response ends.
The expiry window can be configured through DYN_ROUTER_ACTIVE_REQUEST_EXPIRY_SECS, but the default is 300 seconds. The repository has no booking renewal path, so the window cannot be extended per request.
Fixing this needs a lifetime design, not a one-line change. The fix must keep the Reservation as the lifetime owner for live requests. It must also keep the peer-loss cleanup that the current comment describes. A diff is omitted because the safe correction is not established.

When --replica-sync is enabled, the publisher binds to tcp://*:{port} without authentication or encryption. Any reachable subscriber can read session bindings containing session_id, pool and rank targets, and replica metadata. It can also read booking events containing request_id, model and routing-group names, worker identity, and lifecycle state.
This Global Frontend passes an empty token list, so its events contain token_sequence: Some([]), not prompt or non-empty token-sequence hashes. Restrict the publisher to authenticated, authorized peers before enabling network access.

Closed: replica sync no longer uses the core's built-in ZMQ mesh. Replication is gRPC only, and it now shares session bindings and in-flight counts only. See #17665 (protocol) and #17669 (transport, peers from Global Discovery), and DEP #17639.

Overview
Third of three PRs (stacked on #17598, which is on #17597). With
--replica-sync --replica-sync-port <port>and--peer tcp://host:port(repeatable), each Global Frontend's core shares its bookings and session pins with the other Global Frontends. What benefits:--router-policy least-requestscounts the peers' requests in flight, andaffinityhonours a session pin made on another replica. The affinity picker's load ranking still comes from the Pool Relay's occupancy corrected by this process's own in-flight count, not from the replicated bookings; feeding those in (a snapshot of the core's booked count at each Relay report, then the delta) is a follow-up. Only--selection-coretakes the flags. This uses the core's built-in replica mesh (ZMQ PUB/SUB, one topic for the request ledger and one for session bindings). It is the prototype transport: the core exposes the same events through host-side channels (
HostReplicaChannels,session_binding_updates/apply_session_binding), so a gRPC transport can replace it behind the same seam without a core change. Testing
Two-core tests on free ports, each subscribed to the other: bookings made through A steer least-requests on B and vice versa; a session A pins is honoured by B, and the pin moving on B is seen by A.
Live test 2026-10-29 on a two-replica StatefulSet (headless service,
--replica-sync --replica-sync-port 5600, each pod--peerthe other) over a mocker pool with the PoolRelay frommain: both replicas shared one booking counter during a 16-session burst (replica 0 logged bookings 12, 13, 14 and replica 1 logged 9, 15, 16 within the same 200 ms); the affinity picker's placement log (added in5c736821) showed the pool's relay occupancy moving with load (slots=0.06→0.44).🤖 Generated with Claude Code, reviewed and posted by @nnshah1.
