[ops] feat: run the DeepSeek-V4 TileLang kernels and FP8 QAT on AMD gfx942/gfx950 - #1363
Lets the DeepSeek-V4 TileLang kernels and the FP8 QAT quantizers run on AMD gfx942 and gfx950 GPUs through TileLang's HIP backend. Today every one of them is gated to SM90+ NVIDIA, so dsa_attention_implementation=tilelang, dsa_indexer_implementation=tilelang, mhc_implementation=tilelang and qat_implementation=fp8_blockwise (the DeepSeek-V4 recipe defaults, e.g. verl's run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh) are rejected on ROCm.
Opening the gate is not enough on its own; three things differ on these GPUs and are handled here:
Shared memory. ROCm has no shared_memory_per_block_optin, and the LDS is 160 KB on gfx950 and 64 KB on gfx942. Several shipped tiles do not fit (sparse MLA fwd ~84 KB, bwd 98-114 KB, indexer fwd 96 KB at one stage, indexer-loss target 80 KB, fp8_weight_quant dequant 64 KB). The DSA kernels now derive their tiles from the device limit and keep the shipped tile wherever it fits, so Hopper compiles the same DSA tiles as before (pinned by a GPU-free test). fp8_weight_quant's dequant now writes the round trip over its input tile on every GPU; the result is unchanged.
FP8 on gfx94x is e4m3fnuz. TileLang lowers every e4m3 dtype to the target's native FP8, which on gfx94x saturates at 240. The quantizers clamp to e4m3fn's ±448, so every tile's largest element came back as NaN and the stored bytes were not e4m3fn. FNUZ bits encode exactly half the e4m3fn value of the same bits on an identically spaced grid, so on gfx94x the kernels cast v / 2 and widen x 2: the bytes and the round trip are e4m3fn's bit for bit, except that FNUZ has no -0. The factor is a compile-time constant (1.0 elsewhere).
Sparse MLA backward head tile. On gfx950 a 64-head tile does not fit and the 32-head tile computes a wrong dKV, so ROCm uses 16-head tiles (the kernel already accumulates dKV across head tiles atomically).
The FP4 quantizer (fp4_act_quant, used for V4-Flash's FP4 experts) stays NVIDIA-only and now fails fast with a clear message on ROCm: TileLang's HIP backend lowers a float-to-FP4 cast by reinterpreting the value's integer part as E2M1 bits (wrong values) and cannot store 8-lane FP4 vectors (Ramp of more than 4 lanes is not allowed). DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Base, the recipe default, has FP8 experts.
* test_deepseek_v4_eager_matches_hf[compressed-topk] runs on CPU and fails the same way on unmodified main (logits not bitwise equal, max diff 3e-7), also with transformers 5.16.1; unrelated to this change. The skips are NVIDIA-only (GLM FlashMLA/cuDNN, FP4, DeepGEMM, the 4-GPU EP oracle) or NPU tests. On unmodified main, every TileLang, QAT and mHC test in these files is skipped on ROCm as NVIDIA-only, and test_qat_recipe_stays_on_the_constructed_instance fails there because main rejects qat_implementation='fp8_blockwise' on ROCm; it passes on this branch. The Triton sparse attention tests of #1271 also pass on this branch.
VeOmni's CI unit selections that cover these files (tests/ops, tests/models/base, tests/arguments, tests/checkpoints, tests/utils/test_save_safetensor_utils.py) were also run on gfx942 against unmodified mainf1534a2 on the same machine: no test fails on this branch that passes on main.
Image: vllm/vllm-openai-rocm:nightly-rocm100-e4a5b5537344b103ed10de7764378ef09604ef3d (torch 2.13.0+rocm10.0.0, transformers 5.20.2, tilelang 0.1.10 and tile-kernels 1.0.0 with the HIP fixes listed under Dependencies outside this repo).
New / changed tests:
test_tilelang_tilings_follow_the_shared_memory_budget: GPU-free; pins the sparse MLA fwd/bwd, indexer and indexer-loss target tiles for Hopper (227 KB), gfx950 (160 KB) and gfx942 (64 KB). The large budgets are the regression guard for CUDA.
test_tilelang_gpu_gate_follows_platform, test_fp4_quantizers_reject_rocm_before_vendor_import, and the existing gate tests now patch veomni.ops.platform.gpu (SM89 / SM90 / gfx90a / gfx942 / gfx950).
FP8 byte comparisons ignore only the sign of zero on gfx94x (assert_e4m3fn_bytes_equal).
Pipelined sparse MLA fwd: TileLang's HIP backend does not lower the indexed gather to cp_async_gs, so that string check is CUDA-only; the 8-head kernels still agree bitwise, and the 16-head-padded interface is held to one bf16 ulp on ROCm.
tests/models/base/test_checkpoint_tensor_converter.py: the export preflight tests patch veomni.ops.platform.gpu like the other gate tests (they patched export_quant helpers that it no longer imports), and cover the FP4 expert check on gfx950.
tests/ops/base/test_builtin_entries.py: the catalog records a ROCm platform's archs, and the TileLang DSA and mHC rows list NVIDIA SM90+ and ROCm gfx942/gfx950.
test_fp4_expert_qat_is_rejected_at_model_setup_on_rocm: with QAT on, FP4 routed experts are rejected on gfx950 when the experts module is built, while FP8 experts are accepted.
test_target_kernel_matches_reference_at_v4_head_dim: the indexer-loss target at DeepSeek-V4's 64 heads of dim 512 (no sequence parallelism), which takes the head-chunked path on gfx942.
End to end: verl GRPO with run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh and its defaults (DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Base, TileLang DSA + mHC, QAT fp8_blockwise, R3, EP8, USP4, vLLM TP8 rollouts), overriding only trainer.nnodes=2, trains on two nodes of each architecture, and rollout and trainer token probabilities stay consistent at every step (verl's training/rollout_actor_probs_pearson_corr and rollout_corr/kl). verl main pins VeOmni 10a26aca (before [BREAKING][ops, model] refactor: replace OpSlot with VeomniOp #1142), so those runs use that revision with the same kernel and QAT changes.
API and Usage Example
No API change. On gfx942 / gfx950 the existing options are now accepted instead of being rejected as NVIDIA-only, e.g. dsa_attention_implementation=tilelang, dsa_indexer_implementation=tilelang, mhc_implementation=tilelang and qat_implementation=fp8_blockwise. RocmGpuPlatform gains an optional archs filter; RocmGpuPlatform() (and ROCM_GPU) still matches every ROCm GPU.
DeepSeek-V4 experts (deepseek_v4_gpu_patch_gen_config.py; the GPU and NPU generated files, which share this experts patch, regenerated with patchgen at transformers 5.16.1, the version they are based on): with QAT on, FP4 routed experts call require_tilelang_fp4_gpu() at construction, so V4-Flash QAT on ROCm fails at model setup instead of at the first expert forward.
Export preflight (validate_deepseek_v4_export_quant_support): when routed experts will be exported as FP4 (expert_dtype, by default the model config's), it also checks the FP4 quantizer, so on ROCm that export fails before training instead of at the first export.
Gates: DSA (dsa/__init__.py, dsa/sparse_mqa_target.py, including the DSpark sparse_attn_tilelang wrapper), mHC (mhc/__init__.py), QAT (qat/_hardware.py: require_tilelang_gpu, plus require_tilelang_fp4_gpu for FP4), export (deepseek_v4/export_quant.py, checkpoint_tensor_converter.py) and OpsImplementationConfig's qat_implementation check.
veomni/utils/device.py: get_max_shared_memory_per_block() (falls back to shared_memory_per_block when there is no opt-in carve-out) and get_rocm_gcn_arch().
dsa/vendor/tilelang_sparse_mla_fwd.py (fit_forward_tiling: block_I 64→32, 256→128 threads, and >16 heads split into 16-wide CTAs on 64 KB), tilelang_sparse_mla_bwd.py (fit_backward_tiling: 16-row KV block, dKV staged 4 rows at a time, dQ stored from registers on 64 KB; ROCm head tile 16), tilelang_indexer_fwd.py (fit_indexer_tiling: stages first, then block_N 256→64; the 2 KB margin is TileLang's alignment, so Hopper keeps its 3 stages), tilelang_sparse_mla_target.py (fit_target_tiling: block_I 64→32 on 64 KB; where not even the narrowest gather block fits next to every head, as for 64 heads at dim=512 on gfx942, the head sum runs over 32-head chunks at block_I 16).
qat/quant.py: FNUZ cast scaling; fp8_weight_quant's dequant writes the round trip over its input tile (a second 32 KB tile does not fit 64 KB).
mhc_implementation=tilelang uses TileKernels. On HIP, tile-kernels 1.0.0 fails to compile the mHC post kernel (PDL), its pre_big_fuse thread-subset branch hands data through shared memory without a barrier (HIP has no named barriers, TileLang emits no sync there; under no_grad half of the collapsed output was wrong), and the norm_fn / sinkhorn backward exceed gfx942's 64 KB. TileKernels main (2.1) has PDL off by default, a norm_fn backward without the shared-memory GEMM, and an 8-token sinkhorn backward block that fits 64 KB; the pre_big_fuse branch is [BugFix][ROCm] Make the mHC pre big-fuse kernel compile and run on HIP deepseek-ai/TileKernels#43. VeOmni still pins tile-kernels 1.0.0 (its mHC adapters import tile_kernels.modeling.mhc, which 2.1 no longer has), where all three need the equivalent change (the pre_big_fuse one is the same as support for CFG Distillation? #43).
Added/updated documentation: the mhc_implementation / qat_implementation help, docs/usage/arguments.md, docs/design/op_selection.md, docs/testing.md, docs/hardware_support/rocm/README.md and README.md list gfx942/gfx950 next to SM90+, with FP4 experts NVIDIA-only
tasks/ training scripts: none moved or renamed, so the doc task-path check does not apply
Tests: extended existing CI-selected tests

DSA and MHC TileLang registrations use the shared supported-platform set. Tests use shared GPU availability and requirement helpers and cover supported and rejected architectures.
FP8 quantization applies a 0.5 cast factor on gfx940, gfx941, and gfx942, and a factor of 1.0 on other architectures. Tests use byte-level E4M3 comparisons, with negative-zero normalization for specified ROCm architectures.
FP8 QAT and export paths use general TileLang GPU checks. FP4 quantization uses an additional NVIDIA-only check. Export validation infers or accepts expert_dtype and requires FP4 support when quantizing routed-expert weights.

Tests cover selected tilings at Hopper, gfx950, and gfx942 shared-memory budgets, platform eligibility, and kernel output comparisons.
Update the stale hardware text in the mhc_implementation and qat_implementation help strings.
This PR enables the TileLang paths on AMD gfx942/gfx950. The two help strings still say these paths need NVIDIA SM90+ (Line 1539 and Line 1553). --help and the generated config docs will tell AMD users the options are unsupported. The qat_implementation string also does not say that FP4 expert quantization (V4-Flash) stays NVIDIA-only.
The repository guideline requires related documentation updates when a change modifies a config field or workflow.

[P2] On gfx942, heads=64, dim=512 still needs 80 KiB after this loop reaches block_I=16, exceeding its 64 KiB LDS. Attention supports this shape by splitting heads, but enabling indexer loss makes the teacher target raise. Add head-chunk accumulation or a working fallback, and cover this shape in the target tests.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed: at 64 heads the Q tile alone is 64 KiB at dim=512, so no gather block fits next to it in gfx942's LDS and the kernel's guard raises. Fixed in 31bea5e (the PR stays a single commit). The target is a head sum, so fit_target_tiling, now a pure function next to the other fit_*_tiling helpers, picks the largest head chunk that fits next to the narrowest gather block, and the interface sums the chunks. On gfx942 that is two 32-head chunks at block_I=16; Hopper and gfx950 keep one CTA with the shipped tile. Covered by test_target_kernel_matches_reference_at_v4_head_dim (64 heads, dim 512, against the reference; run on gfx942) and by the GPU-free tiling test, which now pins the target tiles for the three budgets.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P2] The target now splits this shape into two 32-head chunks, preserves each head’s original attention LSE, and sums the unnormalized results before caller normalization. This addresses the reported shared-memory failure; the added regression covers heads=64, dim=512.
mhc_implementation='tilelang' is registered for NVIDIA SM90+ and AMD gfx942/gfx950, but its help lists NVIDIA only. The QAT help has the same omission. Keep the FP4 expert exception because FP4 quantization remains NVIDIA-only.

… AMD ROCm out of the box (#8371)
### What does this PR do?
Makes `examples/grpo_trainer/run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh` run unchanged on
AMD gfx942 and gfx950 clusters: no `export` before `ray start`, no extra
overrides. Its training parameters are untouched. Three issues, one per
file:
1. **vLLM rollouts of FP8 models fail on ROCm since #8308.**
`set_default_vllm_quantization_backends` defaults `linear_backend` /
`moe_backend` to `deep_gemm` for every non-NVFP4 quantized rollout.
DeepGEMM has no ROCm kernels:
```
ValueError: FP8 MoE backend DEEPGEMM does not support the deployment
configuration since kernel does not support current device rocm.
```
The default is now skipped on ROCm; vLLM's automatic selection picks the
AITER / Triton kernels.
2. **Rollout weight sync silently corrupts DeepSeek-V4 on ROCm with
AITER.** vLLM B-preshuffles DeepSeek-V4's attention and shared-expert
FP8 weights once after loading; a weight sync writes checkpoint-layout
data into them while the forward keeps reading them as shuffled.
vllm-project/vllm#63604 adds `VLLM_ROCM_DSV4_BPRESHUFFLE`; the ROCm
platform's `rollout_env_vars` now defaults it to `0` for verl's rollout
servers (verl always updates rollout weights at runtime). Users can
still override it. vLLM releases since 0.27 preshuffle and ignore the
variable, so where the recipe enables AITER (gfx94x) it now refuses an
importable vLLM that does not define it. `PlatformROCm` now also
recognizes a HIP build of torch when `rocm-smi` is not installed;
platform detection used to fall back to `nvidia` there and drop this
default.
3. **Recipe worker environment**, passed through
`ray_kwargs.ray_init.runtime_env.env_vars` so that it reaches every
worker even on a cluster started with a plain `ray start` (each value
overridable from the launching shell). Keys that a `ray job submit
--runtime-env` already sets are left to the job, since Ray rejects the
same key in `ray.init`'s runtime env.
- `OMP_NUM_THREADS` = physical cores (at most the CPUs the launching
process may use, e.g. under a Slurm cpuset) / GPUs per node: Ray pins it
to 1 in its workers, and with the recipe's `enable_fsdp_offload` the
gradient accumulation and the AdamW step run on the host.
- ROCm: `NCCL_DEBUG=VERSION`. At verl's default `WARN`, RCCL 2.30 logs
`ncclAllToAll is deprecated` for every all-to-all (40 lines for 20 calls
on 2 ranks), i.e. for every MoE dispatch/combine of every layer.
- gfx94x: `VLLM_ROCM_USE_AITER=1`. vLLM's DeepSeek-V4 sparse-attention
indexer has no other ROCm path below gfx950. ROCm is detected from the
torch build and the architecture from the launching node's KFD topology,
so no visible GPU is needed. When launching from a node without AMD
GPUs, set `VLLM_ROCM_USE_AITER=1` explicitly; an explicit value is
always forwarded.

### Test
`tests/utils/test_vllm_rocm_rollout_defaults_on_cpu.py` (CPU): DeepGEMM
stays the CUDA default and is not set on ROCm; the ROCm rollout
environment defaults `VLLM_ROCM_DSV4_BPRESHUFFLE=0` and honors an
override; a HIP build is detected as `amd` without `rocm-smi` and
without a visible GPU (before the fix: `nvidia`).
`tests/special_sanity/test_deepseek_v4_veomni_recipe_env.py` runs the
recipe with the trainer launch stubbed out and checks the worker
environment it passes: CUDA gets only `OMP_NUM_THREADS`; ROCm gets
`NCCL_DEBUG=VERSION` and forwards explicit values even when the GPU
architecture is unknown; a gfx942 KFD topology turns on
`VLLM_ROCM_USE_AITER=1` and a gfx950 one does not; with AITER on, a vLLM
without `VLLM_ROCM_DSV4_BPRESHUFFLE` is refused, with AITER off it is
not; `OMP_NUM_THREADS` follows the CPU affinity; keys of a job runtime
env are left to the job.
End to end: the recipe as is, on 2 nodes per architecture. The only
overrides are `trainer.nnodes=2` (the recipe defaults to 8 nodes) and
the recipe's own `HDFS_ROOT` / `DATA_ROOT`; `WANDB_MODE=offline` (no
wandb credentials on these machines). Ray was started with only
`NCCL_SOCKET_IFNAME` / `GLOO_SOCKET_IFNAME`, plus `NCCL_IB_DISABLE=1` on
the gfx942 pair, whose RDMA is unusable (host driver issue), so RCCL
runs over TCP there. On both architectures the run trains, and rollout
and trainer token probabilities stay consistent at every step (verl's
`training/rollout_actor_probs_pearson_corr` and `rollout_corr/kl`).
Depends on #8369 (FP8 checkpoints with the VeOmni engine), #8370 (fused
AdamW under FSDP2 CPU offload: without it the 2-node run exceeds host
memory) and, on ROCm, ByteDance-Seed/VeOmni#1363 (TileLang kernels and
FP8 QAT on gfx942/gfx950), vllm-project/vllm#63604,
tile-ai/tilelang#3665 and deepseek-ai/TileKernels#43. The end-to-end
runs used the image's tilelang 0.1.10 and tile-kernels 1.0.0 with the
equivalent fixes applied (0.1.10 also needs the vectorized-`exp2` and
fp32-MFMA HIP fixes that tilelang 0.1.15 already has), VeOmni at verl's
pin `10a26aca` with the changes of VeOmni#1363, and vLLM with #63604.
### API and Usage Example
No API or config change. On a ROCm cluster the recipe is launched as on
CUDA. The worker variables it adds take the launching shell's value when
one is set:
```bash
bash examples/grpo_trainer/run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh trainer.nnodes=2
VLLM_ROCM_USE_AITER=0 bash examples/grpo_trainer/run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh trainer.nnodes=2 # override a recipe default
```
### Design & Code Changes
- `verl/utils/vllm/vllm_quant_utils.py`: no DeepGEMM default on ROCm;
`docs/low_precision/qat.md` says so.
- `verl/plugin/platform/platform_rocm.py`: `VLLM_ROCM_DSV4_BPRESHUFFLE`
in `rollout_env_vars`, default `0`; ROCm is detected from the HIP build
when `rocm-smi` is missing.
- `examples/grpo_trainer/run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh`: the worker
environment block above, and the refusal of a vLLM without
`VLLM_ROCM_DSV4_BPRESHUFFLE` under AITER (the header lists the
requirement).
### Checklist Before Submitting
- [x] Read the Contribute Guide.
- [x] Apply pre-commit checks.
- [x] Add / Update the documentation: recipe comments.
- [x] Add unit or end-to-end test(s): the CPU and sanity tests above;
the recipe was run end to end.
- [ ] Once the PR is ready for CI, send a message in the `ci-request`
channel of the verl Slack workspace.
- [x] `recipe` submodule: not changed (the recipe edited here is
`examples/grpo_trainer/run_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh`), so there is no
submodule reference to update.

[P2] On CPU/NPU, this fused_triton selection fails registry resolution before the constructor reaches require_tilelang_fp4_gpu(): the platform mocks do not change the registry's device. The test therefore fails its FP4 quantizer error match, including in the NPU models suite. Use moe_implementation="eager" for this setup-only test.

What does this PR do?
Lets the DeepSeek-V4 TileLang kernels and the FP8 QAT quantizers run on AMD gfx942 and gfx950 GPUs through TileLang's HIP backend. Today every one of them is gated to SM90+ NVIDIA, so
dsa_attention_implementation=tilelang,dsa_indexer_implementation=tilelang,mhc_implementation=tilelangandqat_implementation=fp8_blockwise(the DeepSeek-V4 recipe defaults, e.g. verl'srun_deepseek_v4_veomni.sh) are rejected on ROCm.Opening the gate is not enough on its own; three things differ on these GPUs and are handled here:
shared_memory_per_block_optin, and the LDS is 160 KB on gfx950 and 64 KB on gfx942. Several shipped tiles do not fit (sparse MLA fwd ~84 KB, bwd 98-114 KB, indexer fwd 96 KB at one stage, indexer-loss target 80 KB,fp8_weight_quantdequant 64 KB). The DSA kernels now derive their tiles from the device limit and keep the shipped tile wherever it fits, so Hopper compiles the same DSA tiles as before (pinned by a GPU-free test).fp8_weight_quant's dequant now writes the round trip over its input tile on every GPU; the result is unchanged.v / 2and widenx 2: the bytes and the round trip are e4m3fn's bit for bit, except that FNUZ has no -0. The factor is a compile-time constant (1.0 elsewhere).The FP4 quantizer (
fp4_act_quant, used for V4-Flash's FP4 experts) stays NVIDIA-only and now fails fast with a clear message on ROCm: TileLang's HIP backend lowers a float-to-FP4 cast by reinterpreting the value's integer part as E2M1 bits (wrong values) and cannot store 8-lane FP4 vectors (Ramp of more than 4 lanes is not allowed). DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Base, the recipe default, has FP8 experts.Used by verl-project/verl#8371 (the DeepSeek-V4 VeOmni recipe on ROCm).
