[ops, model, config] feat: add Triton sparse attention for DeepSeek-V4 on ROCm - #1271
Adds a ROCm-only dsa_attention/deepseek_v4/triton VeomniOp row, backed by
Triton sparse-MLA kernels (MFMA) adapted from AMD-AGI/Primus v26.7.0. It consumes the same structured candidate contract as the existing eager / tilelang rows.
The row is registered only for ROCM_GPU and requires triton.
Non-bf16 q/kv and non-fp32 sinks are rejected.
The DSA adapter builds the same candidate list as TileLang and delegates to the vendor kernel.
A stand-in kernel covers rope padding, per-sample pool rebasing, topk padding, gradient slicing and the small-LDS schedule.
The backward keeps the short-sequence rank chunk (256 at S=4096) and caps its rank-dependent workspace at 4 GiB for 32k and 128k tokens.
ROCm tests cover registry parity with eager, invalid/OOB indices, all-invalid rows with an extreme sink, invalid-prefix online softmax, and mixed-magnitude dQ accumulation over 40 chunks.
S=4096 vs fp32: max rel-L2 3.2e-3 over output, dQ, dKV and dSink for both CSA (topk 640) and HCA (topk 160).
Environments: torch 2.12 / ROCm 7.14 with Triton 3.7.0 and 3.7.1; no Primus package installed.
End-to-end full-parameter SFT on 8x MI308X: three layers (sliding_attention, HCA, CSA), real hidden/head/compressor shapes, S=4096, BF16 FSDP2, 256 routed experts / top-6, EP=8 (median of 4 steps):

eager
1622.05 ms
54.58 GiB
1.00x
triton
1204.89 ms
56.36 GiB
1.346x
Compared with eager, loss differs by 6.63e-5 relative and grad norm by 1.32e-4.
The absolute eager-to-Triton saving is 417.2 ms, consistent with the 406.1 ms
measured before the VeomniOp rebase.
Only S=4096 without sequence parallelism was benchmarked. Long local sequences reduce the backward rank chunk to cap rank-dependent temporary workspace at 4 GiB; the 40-chunk mixed-magnitude path is covered numerically, not benchmarked.
Requires an AMD ROCm GPU; the Triton row is unavailable on CPU, NPU and NVIDIA.
Design & Code Changes
Registers dsa_attention / deepseek_v4 / triton with a ROCm-only GpuKernelRequirement and requires=("triton",).
Adds a DeepSeek-V4 DSA adapter beside the TileLang row. It shares candidate construction, including packed positions and context-parallel query offsets.
Vendors Primus v26.7.0's Triton forward/backward kernels and adapter under veomni/ops/kernels/dsa/vendor/, retaining Primus' MIT notice.
Keeps cross-chunk dQ in fp32 and casts once on return; gfx942 uses a 32-head, single-stage dQ launch to fit 64 KiB LDS.
Preserves the online-softmax state across empty index tiles and handles all-invalid rows through the sink without NaNs.
DeepSeek-V4 sparse attention now supports a ROCm-only Triton implementation. The change adds forward and backward kernels, registers the implementation, accepts triton as an attention option, and documents and tests its input, output, and gradient behavior.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 815f8
This adds a ROCm-only Triton sparse-attention backend for DeepSeek-V4. The earlier risk of an out-of-bounds read with singleton index batches is fixed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains; the one open comment is a small test-accuracy cleanup.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f00d4
The new execution option is opt-in and retains runtime, operand, and attention-mask checks. No exploitable path was established in the inspected flow. Concurrent compiler-setting isolation and deployment-level exposure remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated execution scope is the process and GPU running the explicitly selected attention path. Model-derived tensor values reach native GPU gathers and gradient writes under that process's existing authority. Service, tenant, and device-sharing arrangements were not supplied, so a deployment-wide or cross-tenant exposure bound cannot be established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The public package wrapper requires a visible ROCm GPU before loading the implementation, and the adapter rejects incompatible operand dtypes. Sample-relative indices are bounded before rebasing; forward additionally checks pool bounds. Backward relies on the saved adapter-normalized index contract rather than independently enforcing the upper bound.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Autograd metadata is stored per invocation. Each backward allocates fresh accumulators, initializes query gradients on the first chunk, zero-initializes KV gradients, and gathers contributions with one writer per KV row. Invalid entries are excluded from the inverted index. Partial computation does not update an input KV pool or persistent model state in this driver.
observed — The added tests distinguish adapter-contract checks using stand-ins from actual ROCm kernel execution. They cover sample-overrun indices, invalid sentinels, gradient slicing, runtime and dtype rejection, and a non-contiguous output gradient. The real-kernel case uses one sample and a single rank chunk; these tests do not establish concurrent compiler-state isolation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before relying on concurrent compilation, verify setting isolation and cache behavior in the supported compiler version. If the settings are shared, prefer invocation-scoped compiler controls or appropriately coordinated compilation instead of overlapping ambient save-and-restore scopes.

Every kernel is a row registered with register_op(op, variant, impl, ..., requirement=..., requires=(...)), keyed by (op, variant, impl, device). The device is chosen with GpuKernelRequirement / NpuKernelRequirement / MluKernelRequirement.
Modeling code holds a handle: VeomniOp(op, variant, resolve_op_impl("<field>_implementation")). It does not read config fields or bind slots.
Kernels live under veomni/ops/kernels/<op>/<variant>/<impl>.py, with the rows in veomni/ops/kernels/<op>/__init__.py. Many files moved.
DeepSeek-V4 sparse attention is now the dsa_attention op, variant deepseek_v4 (veomni/ops/kernels/dsa/__init__.py, vendored kernels under dsa/vendor/).
The ROCm Triton kernels should become a dsa_attention/deepseek_v4/triton row with a ROCm-only GpuKernelRequirement, next to the existing tilelang row.
tests/ops/test_deepseek_v4_kernels.py is gone. DSA tests live in tests/ops/dsa/.

[Perf / Memory] Avoid the ROPE_PAD = 64 allocation, HBM copy, and 12.5% width inflation on q_kernel, kv_kernel, and backward buffers.
Both sparse_mla_fwd_v4_triton (triton_sparse_mla_fwd.py:213) and sparse_mla_bwd_v4_triton (triton_sparse_mla_bwd.py:461) hardcode HAS_ROPE = False for DeepSeek-V4's single-latent 512-dim layout. The only reason d_qk > kv_lora_rank is currently required is that all four Triton kernels unconditionally evaluate offs_r = tl.arange(0, D_ROPE) outside if HAS_ROPE: (triton_sparse_mla_fwd.py:114, triton_sparse_mla_bwd.py:154, 301, 385) and _bwd_chunk_dq_store_ds writes zeros into the dead D_ROPE columns in its else branch (triton_sparse_mla_bwd.py:258-263).
Padding 512 -> 576 in _pad_rope forces:
Two extra full-tensor allocations + torch.cat copies on every forward call (instead of zero-copy q.reshape(batch * seq_len, num_heads, head_dim) / kv.reshape(batch * kv_len, 1, head_dim) views).
Saving the 576-wide q_kernel and kv_kernel in ctx.save_for_backward, and allocating dq_acc, interm, and dkv_acc at width 576 instead of 512 (+12.5% memory footprint), followed by slicing dq[..., :head_dim] and dkv[:, 0, :head_dim] at the end of backward.
If we either guard offs_r = tl.arange(0, D_ROPE) under if HAS_ROPE: (and drop the dead-column zero store in _bwd_chunk_dq_store_ds), or remove the unused HAS_ROPE / D_ROPE branches from these V4-specific kernels altogether, we can drop _pad_rope and pass the 512-dim views directly.

Fixed in 815f88a1.
The adapter now passes the native 512-wide V4 single-latent tensors without
allocating the dead 64-channel RoPE pad. All four tl.arange(0, D_ROPE)
constructions are guarded by HAS_ROPE, and the no-RoPE dQ zero-column store
and final gradient slicing have been removed.
… on ROCm
Register a ROCm-only dsa_attention/deepseek_v4/triton VeomniOp row and
adapt the shared DeepSeek-V4 DSA candidate contract to vendored Triton
sparse-MLA kernels from AMD-AGI/Primus v26.7.0.
Keep dQ in fp32 across backward rank chunks, use a gfx942-safe launch,
and preserve online-softmax state across empty candidate tiles so
all-invalid rows remain finite. Retain Primus' MIT notice and cover the
registry, adapter, real kernels, invalid indices, sink-only rows, and
mixed-magnitude multi-chunk gradients.
Size the test's rank-chunk budget with the kernel width.
d_qk = dim + 64 gives 576. The backward pass takes d_qk from q.shape (triton_sparse_mla_bwd.py:420) and passes it to _select_rank_chunk (:440). The test passes a 512-wide q, so the real backward uses 512. The budget and the assertion both model 576.
At width 512, the budget of 303104 bytes gives 17 ranks, which rounds down to 16. The real backward therefore selects R_CHUNK == 16 for this input. The line 354 assertion does not check that path, because it evaluates _select_rank_chunk at width 576.
Setting d_qk = dim makes the budget exactly 16 ranks (270336 bytes) at the kernel width. The monkeypatch and the assertion then use the width that the kernel uses.
