Problem

Right-panel tabs (Files, Diff, Browser, Terminal, Pull request) stay in the order they were opened, and the only way to move one is to close and reopen it, which loses a terminal's session or a browser tab's page. Close to the right also acts on an order the user can't control.

Change

Tabs in the right-panel tab bar can be dragged into a new order. Neighbouring tabs slide aside live while dragging, the same way thread rows do in the sidebar, and the order commits on drop. There's no separate drop indicator.

  • RightPanelTabs wraps the tab strip in a dnd-kit sortable list. It uses the same libraries and the same 6px activation distance as the sidebar, so a click still selects a tab and a drag doesn't also fire a click. Dragging is limited to the horizontal axis and the scrollable strip, and is off while a tab is being renamed.
  • rightPanelStore.moveSurface stores the new order per thread. It doesn't bump the user-action revision, because reordering doesn't change what the panel shows, so automatic opens (the diff after a turn, linked PRs) still apply.
  • reconcileBrowserSurfaces used to rebuild the list as non-browser surfaces followed by browser surfaces, which would have undone any order the user set whenever browser tabs synced. It now filters in place and appends new browser tabs at the end.
  • Both tab-bar callers (ChatView and the pull requests route) pass the move handler. A caller that doesn't pass it gets a non-draggable tab bar.

Only the active surface's content is rendered, and the desktop's <webview> elements are ordered by preview session in ElectronBrowserHost, not by surface order. Reordering only moves tab-bar buttons, so it can't trigger the webview teardown described in #13798.

Scope and approval

Implements the smallest scope proposed in Ideas discussion #7465 ("Reorder right-panel tabs by dragging"): drag to reorder within the existing tab strip, persisted per thread. There's no cross-panel drag, detaching or pinning.

Approved by @maria-rcks in the T3 Code Discord before this PR was opened.

Verification

  • vp test run src/rightPanelStore.test.ts src/components/RightPanelTabs.test.tsx src/components/RightPanelTabs.keyboard.test.tsx passes after rebasing onto current main: 110 tests, including a new one that moves a surface to several indexes, checks the order survives browser reconciliation, and checks the user-action revision doesn't change.
  • apps/web typecheck passes.
  • Checked in the web client against a dev server with seeded data, using real mouse input in Chromium. In a thread with four tabs open, dragging tabs left and right reorders them live, the order sticks after drop, and clicking a tab still activates it.
  • The recordings below were captured at reduced speed and played back at real speed so they run at 60 fps. The dark dot is a cursor overlay added only for the recording.
  • Not checked: the Electron desktop shell, or touch input. dnd-kit's PointerSensor handles touch-generated pointer events, but I haven't tried it on a device.

Before: dragging a tab does nothing.

Before: dragging a right-panel tab does nothing

After: neighbours slide aside live, and the order sticks on drop.

After: right-panel tabs reorder live while dragging

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Tabs in the right panel tab bar can be dragged into a new order. Neighbouring
tabs slide aside live while dragging and the order commits on drop. Browser
reconciliation now keeps surfaces in place instead of regrouping browser tabs
at the end, which would otherwise undo a user's ordering.

🟡 Medium components/RightPanelTabs.tsx:860

On touch devices, swiping an overflowing tab strip over a tab scrolls the native ScrollArea instead of reliably reordering the tab, so touch reorder is inconsistent. SortableTab attaches PointerSensor listeners to the whole tab while leaving native touch panning enabled; use a dedicated drag handle with touch-action: none or switch to MouseSensor/TouchSensor.

Correction: this PR was merged at f845848837 before my fix (4f1b38d) reached it, so the merged code still uses PointerSensor and this touch issue is still on main. The fix (switch to MouseSensor, leaving touch swipes to scroll the strip and long press to open the tab menu) is ready on the fork branch for a follow-up PR.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a new drag-and-drop interaction and changes persisted right-panel ordering and browser-tab reconciliation across production paths. Touch reordering remains inconsistent in overflowing tab strips, so the interaction and state behavior need human review.

P2 Badge Add a keyboard path for tab reordering

SortableTabList explicitly registers only a PointerSensor, and SortableTab exposes neither a keyboard activator nor the sortable attributes, so keyboard users can focus the buttons inside a tab but can never pick up or move the sortable item. Add a KeyboardSensor with sortableKeyboardCoordinates and a focusable activator, or provide an equivalent reorder keybinding, so this chat-view behavior is not pointer-only.

P2 Badge Prevent touch panning from cancelling tab drags

On touch input, the PointerSensor is attached to a draggable element that retains the default touch-action: auto inside the horizontally scrollable ScrollArea. The browser can therefore claim the gesture for panning and dispatch pointercancel before dnd-kit completes the drag, so tab reordering does not work reliably on tablets and touch laptops. Give the drag activator an appropriate touch action or use a dedicated touch sensor while retaining a way to scroll an overflowing strip.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to f8458

Dragging changes the order of existing tabs within their owning thread without granting additional access or transferring browser or terminal sessions. The reviewed changes preserve active-content identity and existing browser synchronization controls.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new movement path is bounded to the existing surface descriptors of one environment/thread in the current client's store. It provides ordering authority, not authority to create sessions, execute terminal commands or access another environment's resources.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Drag input reaches an owner-supplied move callback. Destination membership is checked against rendered surfaces, source membership is checked again in the scoped store, and neither caller performs a move without an available thread reference.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A browser surface absent from an accepted session snapshot is removed; if it later reappears, it is appended rather than restored to its prior position. This removal/reappend lifecycle predates the PR. It is an ordering limitation, not an established new security or cross-thread exposure.

**Full Changelog**: pingdotgg/t3code@v0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2908...v0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2922

Upstream release: https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/releases/tag/v0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2922
immakermatty pushed a commit to Lazurio/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 12, 2026
Backport of upstream 4107930 to v0.0.45, so a
person can drag the right panel's tabs into the order they want, the overlay's
surfaces like any other. It goes at the 0.0.46 refresh, where upstream owns it.

Adapted to v0.0.45: its store has no updateThread(state, ...) yet, so
moveSurface goes through automaticUpdate, which likewise leaves the user-action
revision alone, and the sortable wrapper wraps v0.0.45's tab markup (its audio
icon, rename ring and "+" condition stay). The two files the port adds to the
overlay join the fork CI's allowlist.

Merges upstream `pingdotgg/t3code` `e688034b5f` (223 commits, base
`aacefcd7e9`) into the fork. No merge PR was open, so this branches from
`main`.

## Resolution
- 9 conflicts, each resolved by its `preflight.mjs` verdict. The tracker
entry in `docs/fork/upstream-merge-log.md` lists them. `AGENTS.md` kept
the fork copy because upstream only changed a user count in a section
the fork drops. `nativeMarkdownText.test.ts` takes upstream's deletion.
The rest combine both sides.
- The lockfile is upstream's copy, re-derived by install.
- Landed 1226 files against 1226 in the upstream range; the gap is
explained in the tracker.
- **Fork-side fix in `apps/server/src/server.ts`**: when `Ws.layer` was
first inferred inside `layerMakeRoutes`, its requirements widened to
`any`. That failed typecheck across `binCli.ts`, `cli/server.ts`,
`server.ts` and the cli tests, and it was the `TS377030` failure the
2026-10-10 merge had blamed on upstream. Moving it to its own statement
after the imports fixes it. The fix is recorded as inventory entry
`server-ws-layer-hoist`, and the gap entry is struck.
- `UnsupportedMethodError` was added to `filesystem.getMetadata`,
`orchestration.stopWorkflow` and `server.checkOtlpEndpoint`; nothing was
dropped.
- Three stale `duplicateAddExceptions` were removed.

## Verification
`verify.mjs` passed duplicate-adds, tripwires, resolution-check,
unsupported-methods, lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build. `test`
failed on 5 files, each confirmed failing when run alone:
- The same four as 2026-10-10: `ServerBrowserPage`, `AcpAdapterV2`,
`OrchestratorReplayFixtures` and `OpenCodeServerLedger`.
- New: `@t3tools/shared` `AgentScope.test.ts`. It expects
`oom_score_adj` 800, but sandbox processes inherit 935, and an
unprivileged process cannot lower it. This is the sandbox, not the code.

## Usable as-is
- Drag to reorder right-panel tabs (pingdotgg#17730). A maximized panel now stays
maximized per thread, and there are other layout fixes.
- Claude workflow phases and members show in Lineage (pingdotgg#12598).
- Threads can be found by a branch's PR number (pingdotgg#14658), and no-project
filters are merged across environments (pingdotgg#17050).
- Cmd-F focuses settings search, and update settings appear in the
command palette.
- Resume continues on the composer's model (pingdotgg#17867), and queued threads
stay subscribed (pingdotgg#15293).
- Fixes to the timeline, minimap, composer, context menus and markdown
performance.
- Desktop and mobile features, which the fork does not ship.

## Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- **Guided PR reviews** (pingdotgg#18124, pingdotgg#18143): `pullRequests.reviewGuide`,
`generateReviewGuide` and `reportState`, behind the Guide tab. Already
hidden by the PR capability and `FEATURES.pullRequestSurface`.
- **`orchestration.stopWorkflow`** (pingdotgg#17826): the Stop button for Claude
subagents in `ThreadRelationshipsControl.tsx`. It has no fork gate and
renders only for threads that carry workflow members.
- **`filesystem.getMetadata`** (pingdotgg#17923): server-derived file-chip icons.
When the call is refused, chips keep their extension icons.
- **`server.checkOtlpEndpoint`** and the OTLP export settings (pingdotgg#12538).
Already behind `FEATURES.diagnostics`.
- These all save through `server.updateSettings` or `projects.mutate`,
and the existing settings gates already hide them:
  - source-control host settings and the GitCafe token (pingdotgg#17901, pingdotgg#17746);
  - writer and review-guide model settings (pingdotgg#18488);
  - per-project provider enablement (pingdotgg#17879);
  - synced model favorites (pingdotgg#16816);
  - publish to any host and new-project folder (pingdotgg#17860, pingdotgg#17371).

## Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
- **Project settings overrides**: they gain `providerInstances` and
review-guide keys, and a sweep clears the overrides of deleted projects
(pingdotgg#17879).
- **Automatic thread continuations**: on by default and capped at three
in a row (pingdotgg#18461).
- **Agent isolation**: each agent runs in its own systemd scope with a
raised OOM score, so an OOM kill spares the server (pingdotgg#17662).
- **PR sweep and settlement fixes**:
  - linked PRs refresh without a checkout (pingdotgg#17167);
  - forks are detected for branches without upstreams (pingdotgg#13894);
- PR watch no longer reports passed while a re-run check is still going
(pingdotgg#17344);
  - thread PR badges catch up across environments (pingdotgg#17729);
  - the reason a thread can't be settled is now stated (pingdotgg#17258).
- **Worktree threads**: they keep their worktree when the agent starts,
and messages sent during setup queue (pingdotgg#17654). `t3_thread_launch` also
refuses a base ref with no commit (pingdotgg#17791).
- **Provider fixes**: a missing agent binary reports a launch failure,
and Claude 5.1+ text before a tool call shows as assistant text
(pingdotgg#18364).

## After merge
- Disable the new upstream workflow: `gh workflow disable
mobile-android-apk.yml --repo soaplabs/t3code`.

Range personal 6fff4a3 + origin/main 5753207 (merge base 6497246).
88 conflicts (79 content, 8 modify/delete, 1 directory split), 157 upstream renames.
Shape: source control moved into packages/source-control-*, host-process references
into @t3tools/shared/HostProcess, usage readers into provider packages, Effect 4.0.2,
typecheck on tsc-rs, mobile markdown replaced by Enriched.

Resolutions:
- Migrations: upstream 061_PullRequestReviewGuides applied as id 70 (70 70 ok).
- Settings: upstream sourceControlHosts replaces github/bitbucket; fork settings:write
  gate ported onto SourceControlHostSettings, its two DOM tests retargeted.
- Claude task lists: upstream's per-turn list with the fork's blockedBy grafted on;
  fork task helpers deleted. Upstream's workflow stop is skipped after a cooperative
  Stop (invariant 7). New "subagent" interrupt outcome.
- Auth: upstream browser-origin gate plus the fork's recorded-origin check; both fall
  back to a bearer/DPoP credential the caller also sent.
- ReviewService: fork's removed cwd bound kept; upstream pingdotgg#17724's ProjectStore bound rejected.
- Right panel tab drag: fork implementation kept over upstream pingdotgg#17730 (superset).
- Mobile: Enriched renderer taken; fork's native Jira links dropped (web keeps them).
- ws.ts: fork RPCs in their own handler layer. One toLayer over every RPC exceeded the
  checker budget (TS2589), surfacing as tsc-rs "any in requirements" in cli tests.

Also: HostProcess import rewrites, focus rings inset for upstream's new lint rule,
upstream tests ported to fork fold toggles / DOM stubs, storageCleanup fixture
realpaths its base dir on macOS, derived PR video regex re-applied.

Invariants: all registry probes hold. Sweeps (mid-merge): resurrected 7, both-kept 1,
dropped 166, fork-loss 470; every entry tied to a resolution (2 resurrected lines in
the Lineage test were real and ported). check:deps holds; idle aggregate probe flat.
Gate: pnpm run verify EXIT=0, 26,540 passed, 0 failed, 30 test packages (Node 24.16).
