Storage cleanup skipped worktrees containing ignored files such as .env, and Settings gave no useful explanation. Cleanup now supports three local-change policies, a guarded Delete now action, and live reports with recovered bytes, per-item sizes, and failure or skip reasons. Runs share the automatic cleanup worker and never overlap; worktree removal remains unforced to protect tracked edits.

The storage page uses standard settings rows: Delete now has a short last-run summary and an outline action button. Last run uses the existing settings fold, starting closed, with removed/kept/failed counts, one settings row per result, removal sizes, and failures in red. All pre-existing Storage rows and descriptions remain identical to main. The only new UI is the Keep worktrees with local changes select and the Cleanup section. Settings remain machine-scoped with project overrides.

Size measurement runs before final thread, session, git, and policy revalidation, so activity during the scan cancels removal. A deterministic real-git regression reproduced removal before the fix and verifies the checkout and its untracked file survive afterward. All 54 cleanup tests, scoped server lint, and server typecheck passed on Blacksmith. This removes the added scan interval; the pre-existing gap between final checks and removal remains. The follow-up provider/client recheck is unverified because the preview automation host disconnected before a provider turn could start.

Verification: web typecheck, scoped lint, and 75 existing settings tests passed on Blacksmith. In the real isolated web client, Delete now removed an 8 MB worktree, retained edited and untracked worktrees, and reported a locked-worktree failure. Details open/close, tooltip details, light/dark themes, and a 600 px viewport were checked; uploaded recording playback and seeking were verified. Native desktop, native mobile, remote/tunnel connections, multiple environments, and lists past 200 entries are unverified in this pass.

Retention-hint and fold follow-up (7533cc6aa8): web typecheck and scoped lint passed with exit 0; all 60 settings-search tests passed with exit 0 on Blacksmith. Visual verification completed in the isolated web client using the authorized headless Playwright fallback after preview-host retries failed. At 1440 × 1000 (2×), retention hints, the closed/open Last run fold, light/dark themes, an 80 MB cleanup run, and a locked-worktree failure were exercised. The media below has been replaced with evidence from c67ca66.

Before

before: Storage on main

After

Captured at c67ca66 through the server-side preview tools. All three day rules and Delete unchanged worktrees are enabled. The manual run recovered 80 MB and retained modified and untracked files. Uploaded playback and seeking were verified.

light: all three day steppers, keep-when select, and collapsed Last run

light: expanded Last run with 20 MB and 60 MB removals and retained changes

dark: all three day steppers, keep-when select, and collapsed Last run

20-second recording: Delete now recovers 80 MB, then Last run opens

This UI pass: web typecheck, scoped lint, and all 60 settings-search tests passed on Blacksmith. Real isolated web runs recovered 80 MB, kept modified and untracked worktrees, and reported a locked-worktree failure. No-rule disabling, dialog open/close, light/dark themes, and uploaded video playback and seeking were verified. Native clients, remote/tunnel connections, multiple environments, and permission-denied sessions were not exercised in this pass.

UI pass by gpt-6-astra in the Codex harness through T3 Code.

Scope and approval

This change addresses the existing storage-cleanup capability requested by Maria: cleanup policies, manual execution, and readable results in Settings. The author, maria-rcks, is listed in the trusted upstream triage exemptions. This exemption covers contribution triage; maintainers still review the behavior before merging.

Ignored files such as .env no longer block removal by default. A new
setting picks which local changes keep a worktree. Settings > Storage
gains a Delete now button and a live log of the latest run's removed,
kept and failed worktrees with reasons.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This change adds production storage-cleanup controls and RPCs, including a manual deletion workflow and detailed reports. It also changes the default worktree policy so ignored files such as .env and build output may be deleted during cleanup, requiring human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Storage cleanup adds selectable worktree retention policies and reports for automatic and manual runs. WebSocket RPCs expose manual cleanup and report streaming. Storage settings display reports, allow manual runs, and let users configure worktree retention.

Worktree cleanup settings add worktreeKeepWhen, defaulting to "uncommitted-changes". Shared settings resolution carries this value through resolved and custom rules. Contracts define cleanup report entries and report metadata.
Cleanup decisions and run reports
apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts
The cleanup service evaluates retention rules, records kept, removed, and failed outcomes, and publishes reports capped at 200 entries. Manual runs return a report; automatic runs continue through the worker. Tests cover retention policies, report behavior, file cleanup, and failures.
RPC access and runtime wiring
packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/client.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/commandPermissions.test.ts, apps/server/src/auth/RpcAuthorization.ts, apps/server/src/auth/RpcAuthorization.test.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts, apps/server/src/observability/RpcInstrumentation.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts
The server exposes cleanup and report-stream RPCs. The client runtime adds the command and subscription. Cleanup requires settings-write scope; report retrieval uses orchestration-read scope.
Storage settings and guidance
apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts, docs/user/project-settings.md, apps/web/src/lib/formatBytes.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/ResourceTelemetryDiagnostics.tsx
The settings UI shows cleanup reports, enables manual runs when cleanup rules and environment permissions allow them, and offers three worktree retention policies. Search entries and documentation describe the controls. Byte formatting is shared with the resource telemetry diagnostics component.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to eb55e

With the "Edited tracked files" policy, cleanup can permanently delete untracked files from a worktree whose removal then fails, for example because the worktree is locked. Resolve this before merging. The remaining settings issues are minor accessibility and usability problems.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to eb55e

Deletion remains permission-controlled and protects tracked edits, active work, and unmanaged checkouts. However, the more aggressive policy can delete local files before worktree removal fails, leaving a partially modified checkout without reporting that partial deletion. Existing cleanup settings also adopt a policy that permits removal of ignored files.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: Under tracked-changes, cleanup permanently deletes untracked and ignored files before attempting non-forced worktree removal. If removal then fails, the checkout survives but its local files do not. The failure report has no partial-deletion indication or byte accounting, impairing recovery decisions. The real-Git regression explicitly asserts this state for a late tracked edit. The base had no separate git-clean phase; tracked-edit preservation and explicit policy warnings do not make this new two-step transition atomic.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A settings-write-authorized caller can request a policy-governed sweep across eligible worktrees, expired browser artifacts, and rotated logs within one connected server environment. The web action can initiate independent sweeps across multiple authorized connections. Exposure is not limited to one thread, but no arbitrary-path deletion input was found in the new RPC.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supported adverse outcome requires the aggressive tracked-changes policy and an eligible worktree: git clean deletes local files, then a late tracked edit makes removal fail. The test confirms the tracked edit survives while the untracked file is lost. This is a destructive failure-state issue, not evidence that a read-only client can invoke cleanup.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Server-side authorization rejects orchestration-read-only manual cleanup before handler execution. Deletion additionally checks shared ownership, active work, terminals, provider sessions, managed roots, linked-worktree identity, branch and commit stability, and policy stability.
  • observed — Cleanup reports transport full worktree paths to orchestration-read-authorized clients despite basename-only UI presentation. Worktree paths already appeared in shell contracts authorized by the same read scope at the merge base. Path visibility alone therefore does not establish a new authorization violation; report-specific sensitivity requirements were not supplied.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Once a manual request is queued, worker ownership is independent of the waiting RPC caller; interrupting that caller does not remove its queued sweep. Worker-scope closure interrupts processing and drops queued items, while completed reports are memory-only. These are lifecycle facts, not established cancellation-contract violations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make partial destructive progress explicit in the report contract and recovery behavior. Consider a reversible staging strategy for local files before worktree removal, with restoration on refusal, and define whether accepted manual jobs survive caller disconnection. These are design proposals rather than existing controls.

**Full Changelog**: pingdotgg/t3code@v0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2908...v0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2922

Upstream release: https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/releases/tag/v0.0.46-nightly.20261010.2922
aorwall added a commit to aorwall/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 12, 2026
Merges `pingdotgg/t3code` `aacefcd7e9` (101 commits since `c9fa1367ca`)
into the fork. It branches from `main`; no other merge PR is open.

Opened as a **draft** because one verification failure has no fix here:
`apps/server` typecheck reports `TS377030` (`anyUnknownInErrorContext`)
at every `runCli` in `src/cli/app.test.ts`, `project.test.ts` and
`theme.test.ts`. Upstream's own `apps/server` tree, checked out over
this one, reports the same errors, and the fork has no delta in those
files or the server's config. When the requirements type is probed
directly it comes out as `never`. This is recorded in
`docs/fork/gaps.md`. Someone needs to confirm whether upstream CI is red
on this too, or whether something in the fork's toolchain causes it.

## Conflicts (9)
- `apps/server/src/cli/pair.test.ts`: still deleted (the fork removed
pairing).
- `apps/web/package.json`: kept `@t3tools/moatless-api` next to
upstream's `@t3tools/provider-acp-registry`.
- `ChatView.tsx`: kept upstream's child-question banner (pingdotgg#16634) and the
fork's sandbox-commands banner.
- `RightPanelTabs.tsx`: kept both import blocks.
- `DraftHeroHeadline.tsx`: upstream rebuilt the project picker as a
searchable Combobox (pingdotgg#17664), so the old inventory entry no longer
applied. The `FEATURES.projectManagement` gate now sits where
`pickerItems` is built, and the inventory entry is rewritten to match.
- `SidebarChrome.tsx`: upstream only restyled the brand row (pingdotgg#16134), so
the fork's Moatless name span stays.
- `textarea.tsx`: took upstream's `ring-inset` and kept the fork's
`font="mono"` prop.
- `threadShell.ts`: upstream now imports
`isProviderNativeSubagentThread` itself. Took its import line; the
fork's filter is unchanged.
- `pnpm-lock.yaml`: started from upstream's copy and regenerated it with
an install. The committed lockfile includes the fork's own dependencies
(`moatless-api`).

Other changes:
- `SectionSearch.tsx`: added `ring-inset` to satisfy upstream's new
`no-outset-state-indicators` lint rule (pingdotgg#16675).
- `rpc.ts`: `UnsupportedMethodError` is now on
`server.getStorageCleanupReport` and `server.runStorageCleanup`.

## Verification
- Checks: duplicate-adds, tripwires, resolution-check,
unsupported-methods, lockfile, fmt, lint and the production build all
pass. `typecheck` fails as described above.
- Tests: four failures that also fail when run alone. The same four
failed on the 2026-10-08 and 2026-10-09 merges, and all come from the
sandbox:
  - `ServerBrowserPage`: the Playwright browser isn't installed.
- `OrchestratorReplayFixtures`: the sandbox's `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` leaks
into an expected error message.
- `AcpAdapterV2` and `OpenCodeServerLedger`: the sandbox doesn't reap
process groups.
- File counts: 929 files landed against 927 changed upstream. The fork
side adds the gaps register, the inventory and `SectionSearch.tsx`; the
deleted `pair.test.ts` accounts for the other side. The fork delta is
unchanged at 775 files.

## Feature classification

### Usable as-is
- The draft screen's project picker is searchable (pingdotgg#17664).
- Breadcrumb navigation to a thread's parent (pingdotgg#16666).
- A keyboard shortcut for the thread details panel (pingdotgg#16694).
- Pending requests wait until you stop typing (pingdotgg#17637).
- A pending subagent question shows on its parent thread (pingdotgg#16634).
Moatless child tasks would show their questions on the parent, which is
probably what we want.
- Many resize, focus-ring and layout fixes (pingdotgg#17656–pingdotgg#17660, pingdotgg#16675,
pingdotgg#17383, pingdotgg#17534, and others).

### Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- **Storage cleanup report and run** (pingdotgg#17563, `StorageSettings.tsx`):
`server.getStorageCleanupReport` and `server.runStorageCleanup`. The
controls only appear when the server advertises
`capabilities.storageCleanup` / `storageCleanupRun`, which Moatless
doesn't, so this PR adds only the two union entries and no gate.
- **PR comment filters for bots and resolved threads** (pingdotgg#17645): these
live behind the `pullRequestSurface` gate, which is off.
- Desktop-only features: T3 Code as the default macOS browser (pingdotgg#17587)
and passkeys in the in-app browser (pingdotgg#16952).
- T3 Connect and relay fixes (pingdotgg#17366, pingdotgg#17599, pingdotgg#17602, pingdotgg#17158): not used
here.

### Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
- A snoozed thread's inactivity clock restarts when it wakes (pingdotgg#16674).
- Pulls and rebases during a turn no longer flood its changed-files list
(pingdotgg#17161).
- A PR can be opened from a dirty worktree (pingdotgg#15625).
- The Claude MCP token is kept out of process arguments (pingdotgg#17408).
- A logged-out Claude CLI no longer reports as authenticated (pingdotgg#15459).
- Passive terminal output keeps flowing (pingdotgg#17178).
- The preview browser stays connected after operation timeouts (pingdotgg#17693),
and the preview probe only checks listeners it owns (pingdotgg#16687).

The `docs/fork/gaps.md` sections for unsupported methods, settlement
rules and runtime fixes are extended to cover these, and the tracker has
a new entry in `docs/fork/upstream-merge-log.md`.
