Problem

Fix

  • A directory root keeps its path as given when path.join() would name another directory. Child paths are that path plus the name.
  • Includes node:fs: stop cp from descending into a directory it is writing into #36355: the walk throws ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL before it enters a directory that it writes into, by device and inode. Right addressing needs it.
  • Verified: test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts (138 new tests, 82 fail on main), 77 vendored test-fs-cp-* tests.
  • Self-reviewed: 12 concerns raised, 11 addressed. Not taken: addressing by descriptor (Node lacks it too).

Background

Downsides

  • Below a kept root, filter and errors get app/cur/../x (main: app/x).
  • A copy into its own output fails after it wrote one level (main: ENAMETOOLONG). So does one whose filter lets the walk into its output twice in a row, where main copies.
  • Per directory copy: +7,862 instructions (+11.0% of an empty one). First cp call: +0.33M to +2.97M. Bundled JS: +10,540 bytes.
Notes

Repro (Linux, empty directory):

import fs from "node:fs";
fs.mkdirSync("app"); fs.mkdirSync("releases/v2", { recursive: true });
fs.writeFileSync("app/config.json", "STALE"); fs.writeFileSync("releases/config.json", "LIVE");
fs.symlinkSync("../releases/v2", "app/cur");
fs.cpSync("app/cur/..", "b2", { recursive: true }); // main: ENOENT app/v2, b2/config.json is STALE

No user reported this. It came from a fuzz run. A program can avoid it today: give cp the real path of the root (fs.realpathSync.native("app/cur/..") is releases since #45423).

What changed since the first form of this PR. The first form decided from real paths of the two roots whether the destination is in the source. Each review round found an input on which that check let a copy into itself go on where main refuses (a volume that ignores case, a bind mount, a working directory below a directory without search permission). That check is gone. The walk-time check of #36355 is the one guard, node's text checks run for every root again, and a link that is the root resolves as on main.

The rule for a kept root (internal/fs/cp-symlink-dotdot, loaded for the first root with .. in it). lstat each name that a .. cancels. At the first one that is a symlink, drop the names at the end of the root that do not exist yet, and compare fs.realpath.native of the root as given with that of path.normalize() of it. If they differ, the root is kept. So is a root where the comparison fails, or where a dropped name is ... A name that does not exist is not a link: the copy makes it as a directory. A root with no .. pays one indexOf. A root that a second .. brings back to its text (app/cur/../../app) is not kept, and has main's strings.

The check of #36355, and what this PR corrects in it:

  • Its parent check compares the source with dirname() of the destination. It now also runs when mkdir -p made that parent: new/../link resolves only once new exists.
  • dirname("dir/..") is dir, which is not the directory that holds the destination. node:fs: stop cp from descending into a directory it is writing into #36355 refused cp("dir/.", "dir/.."), which main and Node copy. A destination that exists and ends in . or .. now goes to the walk with no parent check. The walk has the stat of a root that exists from the start.
  • Its new .then() handler called Promise.$reject with no receiver, which throws a TypeError. It rethrows now. main's pathExistsRejected has the same call and is not part of this PR (node:fs: reject cp() with the real error when the dest parent stat fails #36923).
  • With a filter, node:fs: stop cp from descending into a directory it is writing into #36355 let the walk into its own output once for the whole copy. A second link to the destination, later in the source, then threw ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL even when the filter pruned below both links. main and Node copy. The walk may now enter again once it has left the output. From inside, a second entry is still refused.
  • On macOS, node:fs: stop cp from descending into a directory it is writing into #36355 sent every root with a .. segment to the JS walker. Such a root takes the native copy again, unless it is kept. The real-path check before the native copy reads the text of the destination parent in both walkers: the system does not resolve new/../alias before the copy made new, and fs.promises.realpath is the system's.

Prior art. Node's walk is a port of fs-extra's. fs-extra 11.3.6 (June 2026, jprichardson/node-fs-extra#1073) closed one case of the copy into itself: checkParentPaths goes on to the next parent when one does not exist. Node has not taken it. That check refuses before it writes, but it sees only a text ancestor that is the source. It does not see a link to a subdirectory of the source, a bind mount, a link under dereference or a <symlink>/.. destination, and it refuses a copy whose filter skips the output. The walk-time check covers those. The climb can go on top of it later.

Matrix (a probe script, not the test file): 3 APIs x 8 option sets (plain, filter, dereference, preserveTimestamps, verbatimSymlinks, force: false, errorOnExist, mode) x source, destination, destination with a text twin. Right cells of 72 on Linux: main 0 (24 wrong with no error), this PR 72, the guard alone 0, Bun 1.3.14 36, Node v26.3.0 21, Node v26.12.1 57.

Where Node and this PR differ (each test says so):

  • Node v26.12.1 takes its C++ walk (src / name) for cpSync without filter, and for fs.cp / fs.promises.cp into a directory that does not exist, without filter and dereference (cp-sync.js#L150, cp.js#L318). Every other copy joins as text: the filter gets app/config.json, then the copy throws ENOENT. This PR addresses entries as the system does in all of them.
  • A relative link below a kept root: Node's C++ walk writes the real target, its JS walk the text one. This PR writes the real one. If the system gives no real path, it writes the text one.
  • cp("app/cur/..", "app/out"): Node's cpSync copies. Its async APIs and main compare the text and throw ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL. This PR throws too.

Same as main and Node (pinned): cp("a/b", "a/b/.."), cp("src", "new/../src/x"), cp("releases/v2", "app/cur/.."), cp("app", "app/cur/../copy") throw ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL with nothing written. A kept root gets ERR_FS_CP_EEXIST (errorOnExist), ERR_FS_EISDIR (no recursive) and a legal copy with a filter that skips the output, as a root without the link does. A link that is the root resolves against the text of its directory. A Buffer root behaves as before. Errors for a destination with name/.. and no symlink keep code, syscall and path.

One directory, two real paths. A bind mount and a volume that ignores case give one directory a second real path. Device and inode see through both. Tests: a child in a mount namespace (unshare -Urm) with bind mounts covers Linux. 6 tests need a volume that ignores case (macOS). They passed here with symlinks in the place of the second names, which is not the same thing.

Permissions. A lookup uses the path as given, so it needs no more permission than that path. Three tests run a child as a user that permission bits apply to (uid 65534 if the suite runs as root): a destination through a directory with mode 0311, a destination with mode 000 that gets no entry, and a working directory below a directory with mode 000. In the last one a kept root throws EACCES as a plain root beside another directory does on main (checkParentPaths stats an absolute path).

Fuzz (release builds, random spellings with .., ., //, directory links, names that do not exist):

  • Two binaries, main's walkers against this PR's in one native build, 6,000 cases. Refusals of main that are gone: 0. Copies of main that now fail: 0. New runaway copies: 0. 273 ENOENT on main now copy. 55 copies that nested until ENAMETOOLONG now throw ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL. This PR refuses 100 more cases: in 80 the destination is in the source by real path, in 20 the walk reaches its output through a link under dereference. Between the guard alone and this PR, no case without name/.. in a root differs.
  • Against an oracle, 38,000 cases: a copy that reports success must have copied the directory that realpath.native(src) names into the one that realpath.native(dest) names, and each string the filter gets must name an entry of that source. 19,007 copies checked, 41,328 filter strings. Wrong with a directory root: 0. Wrong with a root that is a link itself: 223, all with the text target that main and Node write. main fails 81 of 6,000.
  • A matrix with links in both directions: 17 sources x 33 destinations x 7 option sets x 2 APIs, 7,854 copies. Runaway copies: 0 (main: 353 of the 7,662 it ran). Copies of main that fail here: 0. Refusals of main that are gone: 8, all one input (next paragraph).

Filters that let the walk into its output. A probe of 5 layouts (links to the destination, to a directory the copy makes, to the source) x 6 filters x dereference on and off x 2 APIs, 120 copies: main ends 36 of them in ENAMETOOLONG, and this PR throws ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL for those. 12 copies that main completes throw here: their filter lets the walk into its output a second time from inside it and stops it only one or two levels further down. The walk cannot know that such a filter stops. The other 72 end the same way.

A refusal of main that is gone. cp("releases/back/cur/..", "app") with releases/back -> ../app: for the system the source is releases, and app is a separate directory. main throws src and dest cannot be the same for app/config.json, because its text path of that source entry names the destination's own file. This PR copies releases into app, as Node's cpSync does. Node's cpSync with a filter deletes app/config.json there (v26.3.0 and v26.12.1): its JS walk unlinks the destination, which is its own source.

Mutants: 10 one-line changes to the built walkers (always kept after a link, no stop at a dropped .., link base as text, no fallback without a real path, ENOTDIR not tolerated, no skip for a . / .. destination, no parent check after mkdir -p, // after a root with / at the end, a missing name keeps the root, no second entry for a filter after the walk left its output). Each fails the tests that are meant for it, and no other.

Measurements (release builds with ThinLTO of the merge base 9fe1cd6, Linux x64, one native build with three sets of walkers: main, the guard alone (the part of #36355 with its corrections), this PR at 9db0bbb). instructions:u from perf_event_open, JIT off, median of 5.

  • Syscalls per copy of 272 entries (ptrace counter): plain root, the same count as main (one access is a statx, from the guard). A root with name/.. and no link: +1 lstat. <symlink>/.. on both roots with one relative link: +8 statx (3 of them are checkParentPaths on the way to /), +5 readlink, +5 openat.
  • Filter and error strings: 8 of 36 probe rows differ from main, all below <symlink>/.. roots.
  • Bundled modules: cp-sync.js 13,116 -> 17,257 bytes, cp.js 9,433 -> 12,608, new cp-symlink-dotdot.js 3,224. The guard alone is +4,835 of the +10,540. Binary text: +14,743 bytes (guard alone +4,835). Host functions added: 0.
  • bench/fs-cp has a 16 x 16 tree only. The rows above for a single file and an empty directory are from a probe loop.

Still wrong:

  • The walkers address entries by path. A copy that replaces a symlink on the path of its own root reads the rest through the new link. With this PR cp("x/cur/..", "app") with x -> app can do that when the source has a link named cur. main and Node v26.12.1 do the same for a root without ..: cp("app/cur/", "app") took 3 of 40 files from another directory here. A fix needs addressing by descriptor. It is not in this PR.
  • A file root through <symlink>/.. with a file in the text of its destination still throws ENOTDIR.
  • A relative link whose target text holds <symlink>/.. resolves as text.
  • Where a file system gives a directory a new inode for each spelling, only the text checks stop a copy into itself, as on main.

Same class, other sites, not in this PR: fs.createReadStream / createWriteStream (#41486), fs.watch (#41986), shell builtins (#41903, #41842), Dirent.parentPath (#41975). cp is the regression among them. It needs a detector where the others hand the path over, because its strings go to filter and errors, its destination may not exist, and it has a self-copy check.

Not run locally: Windows and macOS. On Windows no root is kept (mayKeepPath is false there), and one test of the parent check runs there (cp("dir/.", "dir/..")). On macOS the native copy is taken as on main, plus the real-path check of #36355, for every root that is not kept. That route was tried on Linux with the native directory copy switched on there. 10 of the 188 tests of that commit then fail: 6 have a macOS expectation and get exactly that, 2 are a test of directory modes that the native copy of Linux does not keep, and 2 are the bind-mount tests, which are for Linux only.

Self-review. The last self-review round raised 12 concerns. Done: the second device-and-inode check on the roots is deleted (the walk-time check is the one guard), the keep rule is exact for the whole root, the parent check no longer stats dest/.. (that changed roots with no ..), the new .then() handler rethrows, a failed real path falls back to the text, macOS takes the native copy again for a root that is not kept, the callback API has one test and not 39, and the tests that the review asked for are in. Not taken: a fix for a copy that replaces a link on the path of its own root (see Still wrong), and the change of #36923. Two probes compare main and this PR for roots without a symlink before .. (outcome, message, tree, filter strings) and for existing destinations with 7 modes as uid 65534: the outputs are the same byte for byte.

Open PRs on the same lines: #36355 is included here and can close. #36923 changes pathExistsRejected beside checkParentDir. #36064, #41112, #42906, #47255, #38111, #40291 and #41868 touch the same functions. The second to land needs a rebase.

Status: reproduced on main with the script in Notes (exit 1: copies app/config.json, then ENOENT lstat 'app/v2'). With this branch the script exits 0 and test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts passes (82 of the 138 new tests fail on main's src/).

CI at f2afda1 (build 135530, finished): the file passes on every lane: Linux, Windows, macOS aarch64 and macOS x64 (macOS: 180 pass, 10 skip). The red tests of the build are not touched by this PR: test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts (fails on main too), and on one macOS x64 shard test/js/bun/module-graph/module-graph-isolation.test.ts and two test/aot/parallel/node-http/ tests.

Walkthrough

The synchronous and asynchronous copy implementations preserve path context during containment checks and recursive traversal. They adjust relative symlink resolution and add tests for symlink, .., filter, dereference, and platform-specific cases.

Changes

Copy path handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path resolution and containment checks
src/js/internal/fs/cp-symlink-dotdot.ts, src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts, src/js/internal/fs/cp.ts, src/js/private.d.ts
New sync and async helpers identify paths affected by symlinks followed by .. and resolve link directories against kept roots. Both copy implementations use root-preservation state and resolved-path checks when checking containment.
Recursive copy and symlink handling
src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts, src/js/internal/fs/cp.ts
Both implementations pass walk and ancestry state through recursive copying, construct kept child paths, and adjust relative symlink resolution. The macOS native directory-copy path has additional eligibility and containment checks.
Copy path behavior tests
test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts
Tests cover self-copy errors, symlink and .. paths, filters, dereferencing, relative link targets, permission failures, and platform-specific cases across the copy APIs.

The change is mergeable with bounded owner awareness: retargeting a source root during a filtered copy can produce incorrectly targeted links, and one test depends on the temporary directory’s ancestor names. Fix the test filter and track the narrow cached-root limitation.

Explanation

The title names a real, central change: cp keeps a <symlink>/.. root as given, and it refuses to copy a directory into its own output. Both match the summaries and the PR objectives. It is specific and reads as one sentence. It is long, at 99 characters, but it stays on the main change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description follows the repository template with both required sections, "What does this PR do?" (titled Problem/Fix/Background) and "How did you verify your code works?" (covered under Verified, Fuzz, Measurements, and Not run locally). It gives a clear reproduction, the fix approach, and test counts. The verification section is detailed. The main gap is that Windows and macOS were not run locally, and the description itself marks cp.test.ts as a platform-specific test deferred to CI. That gap is disclosed, so the description is mostly complete.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the widened catch in checkParentPathsSync (src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts:382, and its twin in cp.ts) for swallowing a non-ENOENT stat failure on a text-form dest ancestor when only src keeps <symlink>/.. — the same EACCES/ENOTDIR resurfaces from the mkdirSync in checkParentDir before anything is written, so it is not silently lost.

Extended reasoning...

The change reworks the cp/cpSync/promises.cp walkers in src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts and cp.ts to resolve <symlink>/.. roots as the OS does, adding a hand-rolled lstat+readlink realpath and threading a per-copy CpWalk state through the sync and async twins, plus a POSIX-only test block. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface, but it is path-resolution logic with self-copy guards. Three confirmed findings are posted inline (case-insensitive filesystem self-copy escape, EACCES through an unsearchable cwd ancestor, and a root-bypassed permission test), so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the one additional candidate ruled out this run.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

This is the change of #36355, moved onto the typed walkers of main, with
its check of the parent of the destination corrected.

The walkers keep the device and inode of each destination directory on
the recursion path. Before the walk enters a source directory it
compares that directory with them, and throws ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL when the
directory is one the copy writes into. Before, a destination that is a
second name of a directory inside the source (a symlink, a bind mount)
made the copy nest until ENAMETOOLONG.

- The comparison uses the stats that checkPaths already has. The stat
  of a root that the copy made is read only when the walk reaches the
  directory that holds it.
- If the parent of the destination is the source and there is no
  filter, the copy fails before it writes. The parent is dirname() of
  the destination. It is compared again when `mkdir -p` had to make it.
  A destination that exists and ends in `.` or `..` is left to the
  walk, because dirname() does not name its parent: #36355 refused
  cp("dir/.", "dir/..") there, which main copies.
- On macOS the native copy has no such check, so it is taken only when
  the real path of the destination is outside the source.
…ancels a link to another directory

With `app/cur -> ../releases/v2`, the system resolves `app/cur/..` to
`releases`. path.join() cancels `cur/..` as text and gives `app`. The
walkers list the directory that the system resolves and then joined
each child path, so a recursive copy through such a root read or wrote
the entries of `app`. This is a regression of 1.4.0 (#31830): 1.3.14
appended the name in native code.

- A directory root keeps its path as given when a `..` in it cancels a
  symbolic link, and the system and path.join() give the root two
  directories. Child paths of such a root are the path plus the name,
  as in node's C++ walk. Every other root joins as before.
- The text checks of node run for every root, as before. A copy into
  its own output that they do not see stops in the walk, by device and
  inode (the commit before).
- A relative link below such a root resolves against the real path of
  the root. A link that is the root resolves as before.
- checkParentPaths() takes a file in the text of such a destination as
  "not an ancestor" (ENOTDIR), as it does for ENOENT.
- On macOS a root with `..` takes the native copy again, unless it

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also weighed the bare catch { continue; } in keepsPathSync/keepsPath (src/js/internal/fs/cp-symlink-dotdot.ts:39-42 and :67-69): a failed lstat of a cancelled name only makes the root not kept, which is the base's text join, and the copy's own lstat of that path reports the real error afterwards, so it does not hide a failure. The new module also uses the native realpath on both sides (realpathSync.native and fs.promises.realpath, which wraps realpathNative), so the sync and async twins decide "kept" the same way.

Extended reasoning...

The push since the last review replaced the earlier realPathOf/textDiffers helpers with the lazily-required internal/fs/cp-symlink-dotdot module and the CpFrame/CpWalk dev-inode guard in both cp.ts and cp-sync.ts, plus about 950 lines of tests. Beyond the posted inline finding, the bare catch blocks in the new module were checked and fail toward the base's behavior rather than swallowing a copy error. The change is a large rework of node:fs cp path handling with platform-specific fast paths, so the inline finding and a maintainer's look still apply.

Comment thread src/js/internal/fs/cp.ts Resolved
…ive copy on macOS

fs.promises.realpath() is the system's realpath. For a destination such
as `new/../alias/deep`, where `new` does not exist yet and `alias` is a
link into the source, it fails at `new`. The walk up to an existing
parent then put `alias` back as text, not resolved, so the check saw the
destination outside the source and the native copy nested until
ENAMETOOLONG. cpSync was right: fs.realpathSync() cancels `..` as text
first.

The async check now normalizes the parent first. That is right for every
root that comes here: a root whose text names another directory than the
system keeps its path and takes the JS walker.

src/js/internal/fs/cp-symlink-dotdot.ts:97-103
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Stop caching the kept root's real path for each link.

linkDirSync caches kept.real for the whole walk. If a filter callback retargets the source root symlink after an earlier relative link fills the cache, a later relative link in a subdirectory is read through the root path, which now names the new target. Its symlink target is still resolved against the old tree. The copy succeeds, and the copied symlink points into a directory that the copy did not read. Resolving the real path on each call removes this mismatch in the deterministic filter case, because the filter runs before readlinkSync(src) and linkDirSync for the same entry.

Suggested fix for linkDirSync
-  try {
-    kept.real ??= realpathNativeSync(kept.path);
-  } catch {
- // What node's JS walk takes for every link.
-    return dirname(link);
-  }
-  return dirname(join(kept.real, StringPrototypeSlice.$call(link, kept.path.length)));
+  let real: string;
+  try {
+    real = realpathNativeSync(kept.path);
+  } catch {
+ // What node's JS walk takes for every link.
+    return dirname(link);
+  }
+  return dirname(join(real, StringPrototypeSlice.$call(link, kept.path.length)));

Apply the same change in linkDir. Await the real path into a local variable and use that local in the join. Do not store it on kept, because concurrent async calls can overwrite a shared field. If no other code reads KeptRoot.real, remove that field.

Each relative link under a kept root now calls realpath once. The cost is small, but it is not zero.

838-841: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Cover sibling writes that happen after the output encounter.

The filter at test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts:838-841 deletes every entry under ${parent}/copy/ except entries under ${parent}/copy/${name}/. A copy that keeps walking after it reaches its own output can write an extra sibling under ${parent}/copy/. The filter removes that sibling before the tree comparison, so the test still passes.

Child order is not fixed. copyDir in src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts reads children with an unsorted readdirSync. The async copier in src/js/internal/fs/cp.ts uses an unsorted opendir loop. Names alone cannot separate siblings copied before the encounter from siblings copied after it, so the tolerated entries cannot be selected from names.

No concrete assertion is established for this case. A fixture whose source holds only the output's parent has no other child to copy, so it does not exercise this regression. Leave the filter as is until an order-independent assertion is identified.

426-426: Minor · Potential issue · Heavy lift

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

nativeDirCopyIsSafeSync uses the case-sensitive isSrcSubdir comparison on real-path strings; the async twin does the same. On a case-insensitive volume, reconstructed missing destination segments may retain a different spelling of the source directory and evade the native walk's self-copy guard.

The macOS native directory path may enter its own output rather than reject the copy, potentially leaving an expanding partial copy or failing with a filesystem limit error.

This can occur when: On a case-insensitive macOS volume, copy a regular-file-only directory /tmp/src to /tmp/SRC/missing/out, with missing initially absent, and realpath reconstruction retains SRC while source resolution returns src.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 9fe1cd6caa57); the change keeps it reachable.

cancelledNames() called push() and pop() of Array.prototype. The module
loads for the first root with `..`, so a program that replaced one of
them before that changed which roots keep their path. It now uses
$arrayPush and a depth counter.

On the other three notes of the CodeRabbit review of cf04c4b:

  • Real path of a kept root is read once (linkDir[Sync]): kept as it is. The walkers address each entry by path. A filter that retargets a link on the path of the root during the copy changes what every later entry names, with or without this value (the PR body lists that under "Still wrong"). Reading the real path for each link costs three system calls per link and does not make such a copy consistent. The async walk awaits each entry in turn, so two calls never race on kept.real.
  • Case-insensitive volume and the check before the native copy (nativeDirCopyIsSafe[Sync]): not the case. The existing part of the destination parent goes through the system's real path (getattrlist with ATTR_CMN_FULLPATH on macOS), which gives the name as it is on disk. For cp("/tmp/src", "/tmp/SRC/missing/out") that is /private/tmp/src, so the destination compares as inside the source. Only names that do not exist yet stay text.
  • refusedAtOutput filter in the test: no change, as the note concludes. The helper asserts the exact error first, and the walk throws at the entry that is its output, so nothing is written after that point.

…walk left it

With a filter, the walk may enter its own output once: only the filter
can end that walk. The flag for it was never cleared, so a second link
to the destination, anywhere later in the source, threw
ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL even when the filter pruned everything below both
links. main and node complete that copy.

The flag now holds only while the walk is inside the output. It is
cleared when the entry that led into it is copied. From inside, a
second entry is still refused, so a filter that keeps everything cannot
nest the copy.

Minor · Scope the cp filter to the fixture path, not the whole temp path. · cp.test.ts:603

test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts:603
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Scope the cp filter to the fixture path, not the whole temp path.

The regex /[\\/]l[12][\\/]/ runs against the full absolute path. If the temporary directory sits under an ancestor named l1 or l2, every source path matches, including the root src. The filter then returns false before any copy, and the expected tree assertion fails. Test the path relative to base so that only the fixture's own components are checked:

I re-reviewed this PR after the latest push and found no new bugs; the last commit addresses the earlier enterOnce concern. Given the size of the walker rework, a human look is still worthwhile before merging.

What was reviewed:

  • The walk.entered reset in copyDir (both twins): mayEnter is captured before the loop, so a nested copyDir inside the output cannot clear the flag, and the flag is cleared only in the frame whose entry led into the output.
  • mkDirAndCopy still stats a new frame whenever walk.entered is set, so the one allowed entry keeps inode frames for re-entry refusal.
  • The new test (two links to dest, filter pruning below both) would trip own on the second link without the reset.
Extended reasoning...

The range covers six commits reworking the node:fs cp/cpSync/promises.cp recursive walker in src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts and cp.ts, adds the new src/js/internal/fs/cp-symlink-dotdot.ts module (registered in private.d.ts), and adds roughly 1,000 lines of tests in test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts. It touches path handling with symlinks and inode-based self-copy guards, which is a correctness surface rather than an auth or injection one. The latest commit (9db0bbb) is small and addresses the open inline finding from the prior run; this run's hunt ran dry with no findings. The change is large and intricate (new per-walk state, lazily stat'd frame stack, platform-gated native fast path), and several third-party bot threads were resolved only by the author, so it is not approvable as simple or mechanical.

The filter of the two-links test looked for `/l1/` and `/l2/` in the
whole path. A temporary directory below a directory of that name (the
two-character folders of macOS's per-user temp root can be one) made it
skip the source root.

On the follow-up note of the CodeRabbit review of 9db0bbb (the filter of the two-links test): done in f2afda1. The filter now reads the path below the fixture. The case is real on macOS, where the per-user temp root has two-character folders and one of them can be l1 or l2.
