Problem

  • fs.cpSync(dir, dest) without recursive throws SystemError: Path is a directory: cp returned EISDIR (...). Node v26.12.1 throws Error: Recursive option not enabled, cannot copy a directory: <src>/ with only code. Seven more differ.
  • With an option, a FIFO or a socket, Bun makes the folders above dest first, and the mkdir error can win.
  • Cause: checkParentDir (src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts:369) calls mkdirSync before getStats reads src.

Fix

  • cpSyncFn makes one native call before any write: NodeFS::cp_sync_check_paths (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs). Its order, text and error shape are Node's. Each check decides as before.
  • Verified: test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts runs in Bun and Node (main fails 29). Also cp.test.ts, 77 vendored test-fs-cp*.
  • Self-reviewed: 31 concerns raised, 26 addressed. Not taken (Notes): JavaScript check, generated grid, walker port, PR split, tracking issues.

Background

Downsides

  • These errors lose errno, syscall, path, info and the name SystemError, so err.path is undefined.
  • One more fs host function (127 to 128): +2 GC cells per VM, +7,048 bytes of text. Other fs calls pay nothing.
  • 150 of 588 probed pairs still differ from Node (133: a link at src). Windows ran in CI only.
Notes

Repro (Linux x64. Node.js v26.12.1 and v26.3.0 print the same.)

Node stats src (an error is thrown), then dest (an error is kept, and the first three checks are skipped), runs the checks, and throws the kept error from the stat that follows the check. Source: CpSyncCheckPaths, called once from cpSyncFn. The errors are built with throw_sys_error (src/jsc/JSGlobalObject.rs): an Error whose prototype is Error.prototype and whose one own key is code.

Where Bun does not follow Node's C++, on purpose

What each check decides is what Node's JavaScript checkPaths decides (cp.js). Bun's walker and fs.cp already decide that way, and main did for cpSync.

  • A link at src: Node's C++ follows it unless dereference is set, the reverse of the option (nodejs/node#60945 proposed the fix and was not merged). Bun reads the link unless dereference. node:fs: resolve symlinks in cpSync's pre-flight checks #33448 ported Node's reading and was closed without a merge.
  • Same file: Node calls std::filesystem::equivalent, which ends the process (terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::filesystem::__cxx11::filesystem_error') when dest is a dangling link or both are special files. Bun compares device and inode.
  • dest inside src: Node tests the raw text of the two paths and looks at the folder directly above dest only. Bun compares the resolved paths and looks at every folder above dest.
  • A folder above dest that cannot be read, for another reason than that it is not there: Node's C++ stops looking and copies. Bun throws the error of that stat after the checks of src, as main and Node's JavaScript checkParentPaths do. From a working directory near PATH_MAX, with a link back to src above dest, Node v26.12.1 copies src into itself.
  • Bun looks at those folders for a directory src only. Node also compares a file, so cpSync(file, file + "/x") is ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL there for most spellings and ENOTDIR for cpSync("file", "file/x"). Bun throws the ENOTDIR of the stat for all of them, as main does.

Against Node, row by row (Linux x64, release builds, Node.js v26.12.1)

  • Grid of 640 root pairs (8 kinds of src, 10 of dest, 8 option sets). Node ends the process on 52. Of the other 588, equal to Node in outcome, name, keys and message: 200 on main, 438 here. No row that equals Node on main differs here.
  • The 150 rows that still differ: 133 have a link at src (above). 8 are a file onto a path below it (above). 4 have dest under a file with dereference (same ENOTDIR, Node's comes from the copy). 3 are ERR_FS_CP_EEXIST from the walker (its own keys differ: name in Bun, code in Node. node errors: make code an own enumerable property on ERR_* errors and warnings #41737 is about code). 2 are the text of Node's native walker.
  • 29 rows that throw from Node's CpSyncCheckPaths (26 refusals, 3 failed stats of src), compared on name, constructor, code, message, own keys, errno, syscall, path, info, first stack line and String(err): 3 equal on main, 29 here. The own keys leave out line, column and sourceURL, which every error of JavaScriptCore has.
  • Folders left behind by a cpSync that throws: 7 of 12 rows on main, 0 here, 0 in Node.
  • 36 doubly-invalid rows (a directory without recursive, a FIFO or a socket, to a dest under /proc, /sys, a file or a missing folder): err.code differs from Node on 25 on main, on 0 here.
  • 54 rows with a dest that cannot be read (under a file, through a link loop, longer than PATH_MAX, under a folder without search permission, run as a user that is not root): 20 equal to Node on main, 54 here.
  • 11 more probes, 111 rows (filter order, long paths, trailing separators, links, worker threads, Buffer paths, which error wins): none that equals Node on main differs here.

What does not change

  • The copy. A regular file onto a regular file is still written into by the native copy, where Node and the walker replace it (node:fs: replace an existing destination inside the native single-file cp #38226 is about that).
  • The walker's errors for the entries below src, and ERR_FS_CP_EEXIST: SystemErrors, as Node's JavaScript walker throws them. Node's native walker (no filter) differs from both. A later port of it changes the shape of those nested errors too.
  • fs.cp and fs.promises.cp.
  • cpSync does not copy from or to a Buffer path. The check takes bytes, so its refusals are Node's for a Buffer too. A Buffer that the check lets through throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE before any write, because the walker and the native copy take strings (main threw it from node:path). node:fs: keep Buffer paths as bytes through cp, cpSync, and promises.cp #41112 makes cp take bytes.
  • In a compiled executable, cpSync of an embedded file fails as on main (ENOENT).

What also changes

  • As in Node's C++, the check takes recursive and dereference to be set only if they are true. This differs from main only if a filter writes another value onto the options.
  • A path of PATH_MAX bytes or more fails as the lstat or stat it is given to (ENAMETOOLONG with syscall), where main had the error of the path parser.
  • A function that the program put in place of fs.lstatSync, fs.statSync or fs.mkdirSync no longer sees the check, and node.fs.sync trace events no longer list it (4 to 0 events for cpSync(file, newFile)).

Windows

Node shows the two paths after ToNamespacedPath (\\?\C:\dir\src\). The check does the same with to_namespaced_path_windows_t. I wrote this from Node's source and could not run it on my machine. The test file compares the text on every platform. On the Windows hosts of CI, x64 and arm64, it passes in Bun and in Node.js: 20 of its 38 tests run there, and the other 18 need a FIFO, a socket, links or POSIX errors.

Order against the open cp PRs (all mine, none approved)

This PR changes cpSyncFn and removes tryNativeFastPathSync and checkParentPathsSync. It does not touch cp.ts or the native copy.

The last four already conflict with main in cp-sync.ts. If a maintainer wants any of them first, this PR is rebased onto it.

Cost and gain, measured (Linux x64, release builds with ThinLTO of the merge base 9fe1cd6 and of this branch at f71e9c7, one build directory. strace, perf and bloaty are not installed: syscalls are counted with ptrace, instructions with perf_event_open.)

Per process:

  • fs host functions: 127 to 128 (grep -c NativeFunctionType GeneratedNodeFsBinding.cpp).
  • GC cells made when node:fs loads: +2 (one NativeExecutable, one Function), +112 bytes of JS heap.
  • Binary (size): text 138,088,459 to 138,095,507 (+7,048), data +0, bss +0. The builtin JavaScript in that text got smaller: cp-sync.js 13,117 to 12,691 bytes, fs.js 30,977 to 30,515.

Per call, for calls that are not cpSync (user instructions on the main thread, 200,000 calls, median of 7 runs): existsSync +1, accessSync +0, statSync +1, lstatSync +0, statSync(missing, { throwIfNoEntry: false }) +0, renameSync -1. The run-to-run spread is 1 to 11 instructions per call. NodeFS::lstat, NodeFS::stat and PathLike::from_js are the code of main.

Per cpSync call:

main this branch
user instructions, cpSync(file, newFile) -16,239 per call
user instructions, cpSync(file, existingFile) -10,197
user instructions, cpSync(file, "a/b/newFile") -28,182
user instructions, cpSync(file, newFile, { filter }) -15,098
user instructions, cpSync(dir, dest) that throws -14,448
user instructions, 256-file recursive copy -16,756 (-0.22%)
GC cells, cpSync(file, newFile) 31 1
GC cells, existing dest 41 1
GC cells, dest two folders away 73 1
GC cells, with filter 33 4
file and descriptor syscalls, cpSync(file, newFile) 12 12
same, dest two folders away 14 12
same, dest below two folders that are not there 19 18
same, recursive copy of a 3-entry tree 44 44
same, directory without recursive and a filter 10 (3 mkdir) 5 (0 mkdir)
same, FIFO 10 (3 mkdir) 4 (0 mkdir)
calls of fs.lstatSync / fs.statSync made by the check 2 plus one per folder above dest 0

No successful call makes a syscall that main does not make. The check makes one native heap allocation of 152 bytes per path that exists (the Stats that lstat returns) and frees it. For a dest that is not there it builds and drops one error. For a directory src it takes one zeroed scratch buffer of about 12 KB on Linux for the two resolved paths.

Wall clock, bench/fs-cp/cp.mjs (four single-file cases are new), 10 interleaved rounds, median of the p50 of each round, spread of the rounds in parentheses:

case main this branch bun 1.4.3-canary node v26.12.1
cpSync single file, same folder 10.3 us (6%) 8.9 us (14%) 10.7 us 46.6 us
cpSync single file, two folders away 13.0 us (9%) 8.9 us (13%) 15.2 us 82.6 us
cpSync single file, with a filter 28.4 us (38%) 25.9 us (40%) 28.1 us 106.5 us
cpSync single file, over a file 10.3 us (15%) 8.9 us (18%) 10.9 us 24.6 us
cpSync recursive, 256 files 7.28 ms (19%) 6.93 ms (34%) 7.14 ms 4.96 ms
cpSync recursive, 256 files and a link 7.23 ms (18%) 7.20 ms (24%) 7.30 ms 4.83 ms
fs.promises.cp recursive, 256 files 89.5 ms (227%) 90.6 ms (169%) 140.6 ms 6.84 ms

The recursive rows are inside the noise, and fs.promises.cp is not touched. Hardware counters for the recursive copy alone (one 256-file copy and its removal, 12 rounds in ABBA order on one pinned CPU): user instructions -0.40%, kernel instructions -0.01%, user cycles +2.88%, kernel cycles +1.47%. The spread of the cycle counts is 12 to 17%.

Self-review: the five concerns not taken

  1. Write the check in JavaScript over areIdentical and isSrcSubdir, so that the rules stay in one language. Not taken: Node makes its one call at this point, and the JavaScript form keeps the BigInt stats and about 30 GC cells per call. It is the question in Background, and it is the form I build if the host function is not wanted.
  2. Check in a generated grid of 640 root pairs with a list of its known differences from Node. Not taken: the test file keeps cases that a reader can check against Node by eye. The grid's counts are above.
  3. Port Node's two other native parts (cpSyncCopyDir, cpSyncOverrideFile) in the same PR. Not taken: one concern for each PR.
  4. Open the mkdir reorder as a PR of its own first. Not taken: it is the fallback above, and it would be one more PR in the same file.
  5. Two parts of one concern. Look at the folders above dest for a file src too: I built it and took it out, because cpSync("file", "file/x") then differs from Node where main agrees with it, and it adds one stat for each folder above dest to every file copy. File tracking issues for the differences left on purpose: not done, they are listed above with their counts.

Run

  • bun bd test test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts: 38 pass. On main: 29 fail. The first 23 tests of the file under Node.js v26.12.1 and v26.3.0: 23 pass, as root and as another user. The file is new because it also has to run in Node (node:test, no harness import).
  • test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts, cp-symlink-target.test.ts, test/bundler/compile-embedded-root-is-a-read-only-folder.test.ts: pass. On main the first and the last fail on the changed rows.
  • All 77 vendored test/js/node/test/parallel/test-fs-cp*: pass, before and after.
  • cargo clippy on bun_runtime and bun_sys: clean. bun run rust:check-all: 12 of 12 targets at 5640be0, and Windows x64, macOS arm64 and Linux musl x64 again at the head.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts, test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts, test/bundler/compile-embedded-root-is-a-read-only-folder.test.ts

fs.cpSync checked its two paths in the JavaScript walker. The walker
throws SystemErrors, and it makes the folders above dest before it
reads src. Node checks the two paths in C++ (CpSyncCheckPaths) before
it writes anything, and throws an Error whose one own property is
`code`.

cpSyncFn now calls NodeFS::cp_sync_check_paths once, after the filter
and before any write. The order of the checks, the text and the shape
of the error are those of node's function. A failed stat of dest no
longer comes before the checks that need src alone. What each check
decides does not change: it is what node's JavaScript checkPaths
decides, which fs.cp and the walker also run.

Status

Reproduced on Linux x64 against Node.js v26.12.1 with release builds of main (9fe1cd6) and of this branch.

fs.cpSync(dir, "new/sub/dest", { filter: () => true }) on main throws a SystemError with errno, syscall, path and info, and leaves new/ behind. Node.js throws Error: Recursive option not enabled, cannot copy a directory: <dir>/ with only code, and writes nothing. The branch does what Node.js does. The script is at the top of the Notes in the description.

The diff is green in CI at f71e9c7. Build 135555 is complete, and the three test files of this PR pass on every lane, in Bun and in Node.js: Linux glibc and musl, ASAN, Windows x64 and arm64, macOS x64 and arm64. Two tests outside this diff are red in that build:

  • test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts also fails on main (builds 135526 and 135376).
  • test/aot/build-scaling/build-scaling-2.test.ts failed on macOS arm64 only: a memory growth of 2.60 in the AOT compiler against a bound of 2.5.

Walkthrough

The change adds native synchronous path checks for fs.cpSync, uses their results to select native copying or the existing walker, and adds benchmarks and tests for path validation and copy behavior.

Changes

Synchronous cpSync

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native path checks
src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs, src/runtime/node/node_fs_binding.rs, src/runtime/node/node_fs_binding.bind.ts, src/runtime/node/Stat.rs, src/runtime/node/types.rs, src/sys/lib.rs, src/js/private.d.ts
The NodeFS binding parses synchronous copy-check arguments and checks source and destination paths. It returns path-type flags or reports refusals for same-file copies, type mismatches, nested destinations, missing recursion, and unsupported source types.
cpSync dispatch and benchmarks
src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts, src/js/node/fs.ts, bench/fs-cp/cp.mjs
cpSyncFn calls the native path checks and selects native copying when eligible; otherwise, it uses the walker. cpSync routes validated requests through cpSyncFn. New benchmarks cover several single-file copy cases.
Path-check and copy tests
test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts, test/js/node/fs/cp.test.ts, test/bundler/compile-embedded-root-is-a-read-only-folder.test.ts
Tests cover path-check errors, option handling, path types, platform-specific behavior, and copy errors involving embedded roots and assets.

Possibly related PRs

Walk past missing ancestors before allowing cpSync into a new parent.

When dest's parent does not exist, the ancestor walk in cp_sync_dest_is_inside_src stops at the first failed stat. Ancestors above that point are never compared with src, so a symlink to src above a missing directory is not detected. cpSync then creates the missing parent inside src and copies src into a subdirectory of itself, which repeats until a path-length error.

The merge base has the same stop. Its checkParentPathsSync returns on ENOENT, so this trigger predates the PR. The PR moves the top-level check to native code and keeps the same stop rule. The per-entry walk in copyDir also has no ancestor check.

Suggested direction

On ENOENT from the stat of dest_parent, set dest_parent = dirname(dest_parent) and continue the walk. Keep stopping on other stat errors. Before changing the loop, confirm that the stat follows the symlink to src, and check Node's CpSyncCheckPaths behavior. The loop comment ties the early stop to Node's C++ implementation.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 9fe1cd6caa57); the change keeps it reachable.

Send existing regular destinations to the node-compatible walker.

The native copy writes into an existing regular destination on Linux. It opens that file without O_TRUNC and does not unlink it first. A hard link to that file then shows the new contents. Node unlinks the destination first. Restrict the native copy to a missing destination, or unlink the destination before it.

This behavior predates the change. The base code selected the same native copy for this case.

test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts: 1

333-333: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add a case for a missing folder below an alias of src, and do not assert ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL as the current Bun result.

The test at test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts:329-345 creates link before the call, so the immediate parent of dest exists. No test passes path.join(link, "new", "dest") with new absent.

For that input, the ancestor walk in cp_sync_dest_is_inside_src stops at the first folder that fails to stat and returns false. The ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL expectation at lines 290-306 comes from the textual check against src. That check does not reach this input, so the expectation does not carry over. At this head, the Bun ancestor check does not produce ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL for this input.

Add the case, but mark it test.todo and note in a comment that the ancestor walk stops at the missing new folder. Un-skip it with the fix that makes the check handle missing folders. Confirm Node's result for this input before placing the case in the shared section, because the file runs under Node as well.

Coverage note

The gap is in the test suite, not in the production path. The production behavior is a separate finding and is not part of this comment.

to continue at dirname(dest_parent) when cp_sync_stat returns ENOENT, so higher
ancestors are still checked against src; keep stopping on other stat errors and
preserve the existing link-target stat behavior.

Minor comments:
Review comments at @src/js/internal/fs/cp-sync.ts:
- Around line 338-339: Update the native-copy selection condition in the
function containing this return so regular source files use the native copy only
when the destination is missing. Route existing regular destinations through the
node-compatible walker instead.

---

Nitpick comments:
Review comments at @test/js/node/fs/cp-sync-check-paths.test.ts:
- Line 333: Add coverage to the existing sync copy-path tests for a destination
beneath an alias of src where an intermediate folder is missing; document that
the ancestor walk stops at that folder, and do not expect ERR_FS_CP_EINVAL for
this case.

The walk up from dest ended at every folder whose stat failed. Main
ended it at a folder that is not there and threw every other error. So
a copy from a working directory near PATH_MAX, where the resolved path
of a folder above dest is too long to stat, was refused on main and ran
here. With a link back to src above dest, it copied src into itself.

The error of such a folder is now kept, as the error of dest is, and
thrown after the checks that need src alone.

Replies to the three follow-up findings of the CodeRabbit review. The inline finding about lone surrogates has its reply in its thread.

One related finding from the other review is fixed in f71e9c7: a folder above dest whose stat fails with another error than ENOENT no longer ends the walk in silence.
