Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new Emulated arm in realpath_inner for buffer and lifetime problems and found none: resolve_buf_len sizes the scratch pair for the cwd prepend plus separator and NUL, the resolved.len() >= inbuf.len() guard runs before paths::resolve_path::z (whose own too-long branch panics in debug builds), and the returned ZStr borrows sync_error_buf, not the vec that is dropped at the end of the arm. I also confirmed the Windows Emulated branch really has no caller left: realpathSync/realpath are JS on win32 and fs.promises.realpath now binds realpathNative.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewrites the POSIX path preparation in realpath_inner (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs), switches fs.promises.realpath to the native binding (src/js/node/fs.promises.ts), and adds one POSIX-only subprocess test; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface, only filesystem path handling. Inline findings were already posted, so this note only records the memory-safety and dead-code checks that were examined and ruled out.

src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs— macOS users calling fs.promises.realpath or the .native variants on a file or directory they cannot read get EACCES where Node resolves the path. The non-Linux arm at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7636 opens with O_RDONLY, and sys::open at node_fs.rs:7638 fails on mode-000 entries. Node's realpath(3) only needs search permission on the parents. The PR table claims the native column now matches Node. Fix: on non-Linux targets fall back to libc realpath when open() returns EACCES, or open with O_SYMLINK-free search-only flags, and add a test with an unreadable directory. Why this was flagged
Trigger: on macOS (and other non-Linux POSIX), realpath of an entry whose mode lacks the read bit for the caller, for example a 0o300 directory or a 0o000 file, through fs.promises.realpath, fs.realpathSync.native or fs.realpath.native. The flags at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7636 are O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_NOCTTY; open() needs read permission, so node_fs.rs:7638 returns EACCES and the wrapper at node_fs.rs:7549-7557 surfaces
EACCES realpath. Linux avoids this with O_PATH at node_fs.rs:7634. Node calls realpath(3), which succeeds with only search permission on parents. The base branch opened with the same flags, so the finder marked it pre-existing; but the PR now advertises Node parity for exactly these entry points and the new test at test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:3241 has no permission case, so the gap ships unflagged. Remedy: a libc realpath fallback on EACCES for non-Linux targets, plus a test.Verification: On macOS, any of the realpath entry points is called on an entry the caller lacks read permission for. src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7635-7636 selects
sys::O::RDONLY | sys::O::NONBLOCK | sys::O::NOCTTY, and node_fs.rs:7638sys::open(path, flags, 0)yields EACCES. The base commit (116dd64 node_fs.rs:7646-7653) had the identical open, so merging does not introduce or widen the defect.
….promises.realpath gets a test that runs on Windows
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
The second commit covers the two points from the last round that it set out to (the cwd ending in \ now survives get_cwd_u8, and fs.promises.realpath has a test that runs on Windows). Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things in the new Emulated arm and ruled them out: the per-call vec![0u8; 2 * len] at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7618 cannot come from the path-buffer pool, since resolve_buf_len always exceeds one PathBuffer and the RarePathBuf slab path.resolve uses is VM-owned while this code also runs on the work pool; and the Native arm reporting ENOENT instead of ENAMETOOLONG for a path at or over MAX_PATH_BYTES is the same slice_z behaviour every other node:fs syscall wrapper in this file already has, not something this change introduces.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewires the POSIX realpath_inner so the emulated variant goes through resolve_posix_t and the native variant passes the path untouched, points fs.promises.realpath at the native binding, stops stripping a trailing backslash from the cwd in src/node_path/lib.rs, and drops the Windows trailing-backslash trim; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface, only path handling for node:fs. Three inline findings are posted this run, so approval is off the table; the body only records what else was examined this round and acknowledges the follow-up commit.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: on POSIX, fs.watch, fs.watchFile and cpSync symlink copying still treat a backslash as a separator, so a file named a\b is watched or linked as a/b. They join the path with join_abs_string_buf::platform::Posix, whose Posix arm at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:1386 uses the loose normalizer, the mechanism this PR removes from realpath_inner. Fix: make the Posix normalizer split on '/' only, or route these joins through bun_node_path::resolve_posix_t as realpath_inner now does, which covers the 4 sites listed. Same pattern at 4 sites (node_fs_watcher.rs:1147, node_fs_stat_watcher.rs:822, node_fs.rs:8426, path_watcher.rs:606).
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
A user on Linux or macOS calls fs.watch("a\b") or fs.watchFile("a\b") on a file literally named a\b, or runs fs.cpSync(src, dest, { recursive: true }) over a relative symlink whose target contains a backslash. FSWatcher::init at src/runtime/node/node_fs_watcher.rs:1145-1150 and StatWatcher::init at src/runtime/node/node_fs_stat_watcher.rs:819-822 join the input onto the cached top_level_dir with Path::join_abs_string_buf[_checked]::platform::Auto (Auto = Posix on unix); cp_symlink at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:8426 does the same with platform::Posix. normalize_string_buf_t's Platform::Posix arm at resolve_path.rs:1386-1388 dispatches to normalize_string_loose_buf_t, which rewrites every '\' as '/'. So the watcher is installed on cwd/a/b (ENOENT or a different file) and the copied symlink points at .../a/b instead of .../a\b. This is the exact mechanism the PR fixes for fs.realpath but the sibling node:fs entry points keep it; the base branch fails the same way, so this is pre-existing. The new test at test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:3241 only exercises the five realpath entry points.
Verification: pre-existing. On Linux/macOS fs.watch("a\b") on a file named a\b watches a/b instead. All three sites join through the same normalizer the PR removed from realpath_inner: node_fs_watcher.rs:1147, node_fs_stat_watcher.rs:822, node_fs.rs:8426. normalize_string_buf_t routes Platform::Posix to normalize_string_loose_buf_t (resolve_path.rs:1386-1388). The base already fails the same way.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed for two of the four, not changed here. With a file a\b and a decoy a/b, fs.watch("a\\b") and fs.watchFile("a\\b") fire for the decoy on Linux where Node fires for a\b. path_watcher.rs:606 calls join_z_buf_spill, which goes through normalize_string_node_t and does split on / only. cp_symlink is not reached from fs.cp* on Linux, where links and directories take the JS walker (tryNativeFastPathSync), and copying a link to t\x gives Node's result. The watchers are left for a separate change because the cause is the shared normalizer: making its Posix arm strict also changes manifest and tarball handling that tests pin as lenient (migrate.test.ts "packages\\pkg1", bun-create.test.ts "behind a \").

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a program that calls fs.realpath(relativePath, cb) and then process.chdir() can get the path resolved against the new cwd, or a torn cwd string, where Node resolves it synchronously against the cwd at call time. The Emulated arm at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7620 runs resolve_posix_t on the work-pool thread, reading the cwd bytes that process.chdir rewrites in place. Fix: for the async Emulated flavor, capture the cwd (or run path.resolve) on the JS thread when the call is made, before the task is queued, or copy top_level_dir under the lock rather than handing out a slice into a buffer that chdir overwrites.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
A user calls fs.realpath("x", cb) (callback form, RealpathVariant::Emulated via realpath_cb at src/runtime/node/node_fs_binding.rs:409) and then process.chdir("other") on the same tick. The callback flavor runs NodeFS::dispatch with Flavor::Async on the work pool (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:1375), so realpath_inner reaches bun_node_path::resolve_posix_t at node_fs.rs:7620 on a pool thread. resolve_posix_t fetches the cwd through get_cwd_u8 at src/node_path/lib.rs:198-201, which copies top_level_dir(), a &'static [u8] pointing into fs.top_level_dir_buf. process.chdir on the JS thread calls set_process_cwd at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5822-5837, which overwrites top_level_dir_buf in place and then publishes a new slice; a pool thread that already holds the old slice reads bytes while they are being rewritten, and one that reads after the publish resolves "x" against the new cwd. Node's fs.realpath runs pathModule.resolve(p) synchronously inside the call, so the later chdir cannot affect it. The base branch did the same read on the pool thread through FileSystem::abs_buf_checked, so this is pre-existing.
Verification: pre-existing. Trigger: a program calls fs.realpath(relativePath, cb) and then process.chdir() before the work-pool thread has run the task. The Emulated arm at node_fs.rs:7620 fetches the cwd on the pool thread; set_process_cwd rewrites fs.top_level_dir_buf in place at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5822-5835, so the task can read a torn cwd or resolve against the new cwd. The base branch did the same read on the same pool thread.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed, and the same before this PR, so not changed here. Running fs.realpath("x", cb) then process.chdir() in the same tick 200 times on Linux: Node v26.7.0 resolves against the old cwd 200 times; Bun 1.4.3 uses the new cwd 51 times and once returns the cwd without x. main reads FileSystem::top_level_dir on the pool thread in the same place. fs.realpath.native is subject to the same timing in Node (8 of 200 used the new cwd). Taking the cwd on the JS thread touches how async node:fs arguments are captured, which is a separate change.

test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts— nit: the existing test at test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:6998-7030 no longer exercises the cwd-plus-path overflow for fs.realpathSync.native. Since the Native arm at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7614 passes the raw path to open, "a".repeat(4090) now fails with ENAMETOOLONG from the kernel's NAME_MAX (255) check on the single component, not from the buffer bound the comment at :7001-7004 describes. Fix: give the native case a multi-component existing path (components under 255 bytes) whose cwd-joined length exceeds MAX_PATH_BYTES so the readlink truncation guard at src/sys/lib.rs:2607 is what the assertion covers, and update the comment. Why this was flagged
The test at test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:6998 asserts both fs.realpathSync and fs.realpathSync.native give ENAMETOOLONG for "a".repeat(4090) in a temp cwd. On the base both went through abs_buf_checked, which rejected the joined length. After this change the Native arm at src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7614 calls sys::open at node_fs.rs:7638 with the 4090-byte single component, and Linux and macOS return ENAMETOOLONG because the component exceeds NAME_MAX, so the test still passes but no longer proves the property its comment (:7001-7004) and name describe for the native variant. A regression in the native variant's handling of an over-long resolved path (the readlink guard at src/sys/lib.rs:2607, or the macOS F_GETPATH branch) would not be caught. No user-visible behavior is affected; this is a test-coverage nit.
Verification: nit. Whenever the unchanged test at /home/claude/bun/test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:6998-7030 runs on this branch, its
fs.realpathSync.nativehalf gets ENAMETOOLONG from the kernel rather than from any Bun-side buffer bound. In /home/claude/bun/src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs the cwd join was deleted in this PR; only theEmulatedarm still has a length check. Nothing breaks at runtime.

…tp2, and update brotli (#46392) ### What does this PR do? Fixes regressions since 1.4.3 that are still on `main` (none of them was released), and updates brotli. Fixes #46352 - **`bun install --frozen-lockfile` and `bun ci` refused lockfiles that 1.4.3 wrote**, so CI went red on the upgrade with nothing else changed: - a project with `overrides` whose lockfile has a version that an override doesn't allow. A frozen install installs what the lockfile says again. A plain `bun install` still applies the override. (from #45307) - a monorepo whose root names one of its own workspaces a second time: through an `npm:` alias, as an optional peer, by a dist-tag with `bun.lockb`, in two dependency groups, or by `file:` under another name. In one of these shapes a plain `bun install` also exited 1, or swapped the package. - **`bun update --interactive` could panic** (`index out of bounds`) after it had rewritten `package.json` and before it saved the lockfile, most often in a workspace with a `catalog`. (from #45307) - **`npx --quiet`, `-q`, `--no` and npx's other flags in a `package.json` script exited 1** under `bun run`. `bunx` skips the flags of `npx` and `npm` again. (from #44968) - **`fs.realpathSync.native(".")`, `fs.realpath.native(".")` and `fs.promises.realpath(".")` in a working directory that was removed** returned `"<dir> (deleted)"`. They throw `ENOENT` again, as in Node. (from #45423) - **`node:http2`**: connection teardown follows Node and 1.4.3 in one more case. (from #44618) - **HTTP/3** (`Bun.serve({ http3: true })` and the `fetch` HTTP/3 client): header size limits are now enforced, counted as in RFC 9114 §4.2.2. The server enforces the limit it advertises (`--max-http-header-size`, 16 KB by default) and answers `431` to a request over it. The client advertises 64 KB as before, accepts up to 256 KB like the HTTP/2 client, and rejects a larger response with `ResponseHeadersTooLarge` without disturbing other requests on the connection. A request may have 200 fields, as in HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2. A header name or value over 65,535 bytes was sent cut short, with no error. Now `fetch` rejects with `HTTP3HeaderEncodingError`, and a `Bun.serve` response whose headers can't be sent resets its stream, where a response with more than 64 KB of encoded headers left the request hanging. `node:quic` reports such a failure too. `fetch` no longer sends a POST or PATCH a second time once it was written and its stream closed before the response headers: it rejects with `HTTP3StreamReset`. Idempotent methods, requests that weren't written yet and requests the server rejected with `H3_REQUEST_REJECTED` are still retried once. (from #42579) - **brotli is updated from v1.2.0 to v1.2.1**, which has the fix for CVE-2026-111497 in the decoder. The decoder's new error code is in `zlib.constants` as `BROTLI_DECODER_ERROR_FORMAT_BLOCK_SWITCH`, and `node:zlib` reports it as `ERR__ERROR_FORMAT_BLOCK_SWITCH`, as in Node. The error code changes and Node's regression test are from #46351 by @fredluz, which backports the same upstream commit as a patch. Thank you! #### Behavior changes in `bunx` - `bunx --registry <url>`, `--ca` and `--cafile` are new: they apply to the install that `bunx` runs. `--reg` and pnpm's `--config.registry=` mean `--registry`. - `--ignore-scripts` applies to that install too. - `--no`, `--no-yes`, `--yes=false`, `--yes false`, `-n` and `--offline` mean `--no-install`: a tool that is installed runs, and one that isn't is an error. 1.4.3 ignored them. - The other flags that choose a registry or its credentials (`--userconfig`, `--globalconfig`, `--npmrc-auth-file`, `--replace-registry-host`, ...) are errors. 1.4.3 ignored them. - `bun install`, `add`, `remove` and `update` parse their flags exactly as before. #### Not included - With the hoisted linker, the first install in a checkout without `node_modules` can leave out a workspace's `file:` dependency if that workspace is also reached under a second name. #45956 has that one. - A tag in one dependency group next to a version of the same workspace's name in another: some combinations behave as on `main`. ### How did you verify your code works? - Each item was reproduced first on release builds of `main` and of 1.4.3, and compared with Node v26 where Node has the API. - Each fix has a test that fails on `main` and passes on 1.4.3 and on a debug + ASAN build of this branch. - `overrides`: 6,398 generated lockfiles (both linkers, `bun.lock` and `bun.lockb`). `main` refuses 992 that 1.4.3 accepts, this branch none. Everything that `main` accepted has the same exit code, lockfile bytes, tree and output. - Workspaces: 3,011 generated projects with lockfiles from 1.4.0, 1.4.2, 1.4.3 and `main`, 12 steps each (frozen, plain, `bun ci`, `--production`, `--omit`, a workspace added later). Outside the shapes above, the only difference from `main` is a frozen install right after a workspace was added next to an alias or a tag of its name. It exits 0, as on 1.4.3. - `bunx`: 222 flag spellings called four ways on 1.4.3, `main` and this branch, and two local registries that log their requests. 1,584 `install` / `add` / `remove` / `update` calls give the same result as on `main`. - brotli: Node's regression test fails on `main` and passes here. The `node:zlib`, `CompressionStream` and compressed `fetch` tests and Node's own brotli tests pass. --------- Co-authored-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
