Decision needed: should a Bun.* call that opens one file give the system the path as written? Directory options keep the text fold (Notes).

Problem

  • Bun.mmap("app/cur/../config.json") maps another file than fs.readFileSync reads when app/cur is a symlink. A write through the default shared mapping changes that file.
  • Bun.mmap("f.txt") throws EACCES below a directory that cannot be searched. fs.openSync opens it.
  • mmap() (src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:1258 on main) opens a text join onto the working directory. Nobody reported either.

Fix

  • mmap() gives open the path as written, as fs.realpath.native does since fs.realpath: a backslash is part of the file name on POSIX, and each variant reads its path as Node does #45423. A compiled executable joins only the paths that process.chdir joins.
  • Correct because open gets the string fs.openSync gets: they agree on all 16,380 generated disk paths (main: 14,490).
  • Verified: test/js/bun/util/mmap.test.js (4 tests fail on main), the AOT path table, cargo check for Windows and macOS.
  • Self-reviewed: 27 concerns raised, 26 addressed. Rejected: PathLike for embedded paths (Notes).

Background

  • With app/cur -> ../releases/v2, app/cur/.. is releases for the system and app as text.
  • A compiled executable holds its files under /$bunfs/, which the system does not know.
  • Considered checking the join against the system: 2 more stat calls per name/.., and EACCES stays.

Downsides

  • Paths that the join repaired fail as in node:fs: missing/../f, file/../f, "". A <symlink>/.. path maps another file than before.
  • Errors name the path as written. A too-long path gives ENAMETOOLONG (was TypeError: Path too long).
  • Per call: 700 to 755 fewer instructions (compiled executable: 739 fewer to 51 more), the same system calls and allocations. .text: +256 bytes.
Notes

The decision

Repro (Linux or macOS, empty directory)

mkdir -p app releases/v2
echo STALE > app/config.json
echo LIVE > releases/config.json
ln -s ../releases/v2 app/cur
import fs from "node:fs";
console.log(fs.readFileSync("app/cur/../config.json", "utf8").trim()); // LIVE
const map = Bun.mmap("app/cur/../config.json");
console.log(new TextDecoder().decode(map).trim()); // main: STALE
map[0] = 88; // main: app/config.json becomes XTALE

Nobody reported this. It was found while the same class was fixed in fs.cp (#47102). A caller that builds the path with path.join or path.resolve sees no change, because JavaScript folds the .. before Bun.mmap gets the string.

What changes for a path on the disk

Each answer of this PR is what fs.openSync(path, "r+") answers, with the same error code, syscall and path. The lengths are those of Linux. macOS has 1,023 and 1,024.

In a compiled executable

  • mmap() joins a path only where process.chdir joins its argument (resolve_chdir_target, src/runtime/node/node_process.rs:537): an absolute path, and a relative path while the working directory is inside the executable. A joined text under /$bunfs/ names an embedded file or folder. A relative path that starts inside the executable and leads out of it goes to the system as the joined text, because the system has no working directory there.
  • A relative path from a working directory on the disk goes to the system as written. main joined it onto the recorded working directory, so ../../$bunfs/root/f named an embedded file from the disk. That is ENOENT now, as for node:fs and process.chdir.
  • For a disk path the answer is that of fs.openSync. After process.chdir() into the executable, <disk>/app/cur/../config.json maps the file that the system resolves (main: the other file).
  • For an embedded path, Bun.mmap and node:fs differ on main and with this PR. This PR does not decide that rule. Bun.mmap folds .., . and // in an absolute /$bunfs/ path, as process.chdir does. node:fs and Bun.file look the string up as written.
    • In an executable built with --compile --aot --asset ./data, Bun.mmap(__dirname + "/../data/note.txt") maps the file. fs.readFileSync of that path is ENOENT.
    • The other direction: an asset imported from above the entry point with --asset-naming "[dir]/[name].[ext]" has the name /$bunfs/root/../shared/note.txt. fs.readFileSync reads it, and Bun.mmap gives ENOENT.
    • The rule for a /$bunfs/ spelling belongs in src/standalone_graph, for all APIs at once.
  • An error names the path as written. Bun.mmap("/$bunfs/root/a/..") is EISDIR with that path (main: /$bunfs/root).
  • The AOT program test/aot/parallel/modules/all-kinds-path-starts-folder-executable compares a compiled executable with plain bun. Built by hand with --compile --aot, its 342 lines are the same as under plain bun. (Its runner skips on a build that is not canary.)
  • /$bunfs/root/../../<disk path> mapped the disk file. It is now ENOENT, as for node:fs.
  • A relative path whose join does not fit maps when the working directory is on the disk (main: Path too long). Under a working directory inside the executable it is ENAMETOOLONG with the path as written.
  • For a program built with --compile --aot --compile-in-place, fs.openSync also finds an embedded file at its source path when the disk does not have it. Bun.mmap gives ENOENT there, on main and with this PR.

For users

  • On a released version, this wrapper gives the answers of this PR (run on Linux): const fd = fs.openSync(path, "r+"); try { return Bun.mmap("/dev/fd/" + fd); } finally { fs.closeSync(fd); }
  • Bun.mmap(path.resolve(p)) gives the answer of main for a <symlink>/.. path.

Measurements (release builds with LTO of f7607a3 and of d99e96d, Linux x64. The later commits change one comment and the tests.)

  • syscalls per call: Bun.mmap("data/f.txt") 4 -> 4 (openat, fstat, mmap, close). The lists are equal but for the openat argument. With name/.. in the path: +0. (qemu-x86_64 -d strace, main thread)

  • instructions per call under plain bun: 3,082 -> 2,327 for a relative path, 3,884 -> 3,184 for an absolute one. (qemu-x86_64 -one-insn-per-tb -d exec over .text, JIT off, loops of 200 and 1,200 calls)

  • allocations per call under plain bun: 2.012 -> 2.012, absolute 3.016 -> 3.016. (entries of mimalloc's allocation functions in the same trace)

  • in a compiled executable (--compile --asset data, an ES module, so that import.meta.dir is /$bunfs/root):

    working directory path instructions per call allocations per call
    on the disk disk file, relative 2,858 -> 2,119 2.012 -> 2.012
    on the disk disk file, absolute 3,006 -> 3,028 2.012 -> 2.012
    on the disk embedded file, absolute 2,933 -> 2,943 0.008 -> 0.008
    in the executable embedded file, relative 2,756 -> 2,796 0.008 -> 0.008
    in the executable disk file, absolute 3,001 -> 3,052 2.012 -> 2.012

    In the four rows that grow, 30 to 51 instructions are in mmap() and Valid::path_too_long. The rest is in hash tables of JavaScriptCore, where two builds differ by up to 100.

  • release binary: .text 108,798,697 -> 108,798,953 bytes (+256), Bun__Bindgen__BunObject__mmap 2,729 -> 2,555 bytes, the stripped file 138,270,840 -> 138,270,840 bytes.

  • two-binary differential over 4,095 relative spellings of up to 4 components from d, two links, a file, an absent name, ., .. and an empty one, each also absolute, with and without a file name behind it (16,380 rows). The same result or error code as fs.openSync(path, "r+"): main 14,756 in a tree without links and 14,490 with links, this PR 16,380 and 16,380. With the error's syscall and path compared too: main 2,648 and 2,852, this PR 16,380 and 16,380. Without links 13,732 rows differ from main: 12,108 in the error path only, 750 map on main and are ENOENT or ENOTDIR for the system, 874 get the system's error code. Of the 3,120 rows with no ., .., // or trailing /, 1,547 differ, all in the error path of a relative spelling. The tree of that run has no directory that cannot be searched.

Tests

  • test/js/bun/util/mmap.test.js: 25 pass and 4 fail on the release build of main, 29 pass on the release build and on the debug build of this PR.
  • Two clauses of the join were removed in turn, and one row fails for each:
    • The joined text is used for an absolute path after process.chdir() into the executable: the row "in the embedded folder: link/.. on the disk, absolute" gets STALE.
    • The joined text is not used for a relative path that leads out of the executable: the row "in the embedded folder: disk file" gets ENOENT.
  • With the join of the earlier commits (every path, onto the recorded working directory), the row "embedded file by a relative path from the disk" maps the file.

Self-review

  • Rejected: move the embedded-path branch onto node::types::PathLike, which node:fs and Bun.file use. PathLike looks an absolute /$bunfs/ path up as written. With it, Bun.mmap(__dirname + "/../data/note.txt") stops mapping in a compiled executable. It maps on main, with this PR, and under plain bun.
  • Not taken: join_onto_working_directory_in_executable (src/runtime/node/types.rs:1203) for the relative case. It makes 3 allocations per call (a Box and two Vec). The join in mmap() makes none.
  • 9 of the concerns were addressed when the Bun.Glob and FileSystemRouter parts left this PR.

Bun.mmap joined its path onto the working directory as text before open().
A text join drops `link/..`, where the system goes to the parent of what
`link` points to. So the mapping, which is shared and writable by default,
was of another file than fs.readFileSync and Bun.file read for that string.

The path now goes to open() as written, as fs.realpath.native does since
#45423. The joined text stays for what a compiled executable holds, and
for a relative path while the working directory is inside the executable.

Status of #47454

  • Reproduced on a release build of main (f7607a3, Linux x64). With app/cur -> ../releases/v2, Bun.mmap("app/cur/../config.json") returns the bytes of app/config.json. fs.readFileSync returns those of releases/config.json for the same string.
  • The 4 new or changed tests in test/js/bun/util/mmap.test.js fail on that build. They pass on a debug build and on a release build of this branch.
  • CI build 135860 (3e4921f) is complete. The file passes on every POSIX lane: Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine, the ASAN lane, macOS x64, macOS aarch64 and macOS 27 aarch64. Windows skips it.
  • That build is red from 2 test/aot tests that this PR does not touch. test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts is also red on main (build 135526, the same base commit). test/aot/build-scaling/build-scaling-2.test.ts fails on the macOS 27 aarch64 lane only. Every other failure passed on a retry.
  • The behaviour change needs a maintainer's decision. The question is the first line of the PR body.

Not proposed for merge. This is the rest of the change that #47454 took
Bun.mmap from. It moves a relative Bun.Glob `cwd` and the FileSystemRouter
`dir` from the text reading of `<symlink>/..` to the system's reading, and
makes absolute glob results behind a `..` name the directory that was
listed.

It waits for a decision. #44342 records the text fold for the router's
`dir`, and #45800 pins the same fold for `--cwd` with tests.

Review items that are still open in this commit:
- make the walker check opt-in for Bun.Glob, or own the `bun lint` change
- return the error of the check and do not fall back to the folded text
- do not name the directory with libc realpath
- move the router check into load_router, so that reload() repeats it
- take `\` as a separator at the router, as its join does
- add rows for a literal pattern and for a folded text that does not exist

Walkthrough

Bun.mmap now selects paths based on standalone-graph and executable context. It reports path-length and mapping failures as filesystem errors. Tests cover path limits, filesystem resolution, symlinks, and embedded files in compiled executables.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new as-written copy into the pooled buffer: path.len() < MAX_PATH_BYTES equals the PathBuffer size, and the joined text is bounded by buf_len - 1, so the trailing NUL write at buf[path_len] stays in bounds on both branches. I also looked at the relative-path cases in a compiled executable whose cwd is on disk (an over-long join falling through unjoined, and the embedded lookup for a relative path) — both reach the kernel with the text as written, matching what node:fs does, so they are not regressions.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewires POSIX path handling in Bun.mmap (src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs) so the kernel opens the caller's text instead of a lexical join, keeps the join only for standalone-executable paths, makes one helper in src/runtime/node/types.rs pub(crate), and replaces one subprocess test with four in test/js/bun/util/mmap.test.js. It touches file-open path resolution with a shared writable mapping, so symlink semantics are the sensitive surface; the new behavior defers to the kernel rather than folding link/.. as text. Six inline findings were posted (one behavioral gap for --compile --aot source-path lookups, the rest nits), which already signal that a human should look.

An absolute path into a compiled executable that held `..` was named by its
joined text in EISDIR and ENOENT. A path of the system's limit or longer threw
a TypeError where node:fs and Bun.file give ENAMETOOLONG.

The tests now drain the build's pipes together, run the child that needs an
unsearchable directory as an unprivileged user, and cover a relative path that
leaves the embedded folder.
…ed one

The rows that leave the embedded folder by a relative path resolved to the
same file from the system's working directory when the temporary directory was
two levels deep. The child now changes into a deeper directory first.

The two new commits address the points from my earlier pass, and I found no bugs in the updated diff; since this changes which paths Bun.mmap accepts (lexically repaired spellings like missing/../f now fail as in node:fs, and relative paths resolve against the process cwd rather than the recorded one), a maintainer's look at that behavior change would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Buffer bounds for the raw-copy branch: Valid::path_too_long rejects len >= MAX_PATH_BYTES and PathBuffer is [u8; MAX_PATH_BYTES], so buf[path.len()] = 0 is in range; the joined branch writes into buf[..buf_len - 1], so the SAFETY comment holds for both.
  • The throw closure only rewrites err.path when the error already carries one, so open("") keeps the path-less ENOENT shape the tests expect, and error_for_caller's ENOENT-to-ENOTDIR mapping still runs first.
  • Compiled-executable branch: find_ref/find_dir now operate on the same bytes handed to open, and the || starts_in_executable join is pinned by the new "in the embedded folder: disk file" row.
  • Test setup: unprivilegedSpawnOptions is taken before sealed (mode 000) is created, which still yields EACCES for uid 65534 regardless of owner; the serial test states why it is not concurrent.
Extended reasoning...

The PR rewrites the POSIX path handling in mmap in src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs so the kernel receives the user-written path (except inside compiled executables, which keep the lexical join), routes over-long and syscall errors through the shared node:fs error helpers, and replaces one test with four in test/js/bun/util/mmap.test.js including a bun build --compile matrix. No security-sensitive surface beyond path handling; embedded NULs and over-long paths are still rejected before any syscall, and the pooled buffer writes are bounded. All five nits from the earlier review (ENAMETOOLONG at the limit, draining the build subprocess, the untested starts_in_executable join, root-runner EACCES coverage, concurrency) were addressed in commits e1344ef and 9bd4b99; the pre-existing AOT graph fallback gap was flagged as non-blocking and remains out of scope. Deferring rather than approving because the change alters user-visible Bun.mmap semantics for previously accepted path spellings, which is a product decision for a maintainer rather than a mechanical fix.

In a compiled executable, mmap() joined every path onto a working
directory to see if it names an embedded file. For a relative path from
a working directory on the disk that base was the recorded working
directory. Now mmap() joins the paths that process.chdir joins: an
absolute path, and a relative path while the working directory is
inside the executable. A relative path from the disk goes to the system
as written, as it does for node:fs.

Tests:
- The compiled-executable rows pass `..` behind a folder that the
  executable holds (`--asset ./app/a`), not behind an absent folder.
- New rows: an absolute `link/..` path on the disk after process.chdir()
  into the executable, a relative path from the disk that names an
  embedded file, and a relative path behind an absent folder inside the
  executable.
- New row: `f.txt` below a folder that cannot be searched. main throws
  EACCES for it, because it opens the joined absolute path.

I re-reviewed the follow-up pushes (through 93fd603) and found no bugs; the points from the earlier inline threads are now addressed in the code. Because this changes which file Bun.mmap opens for every path containing .., an empty string, or a symlink, and the compiled-executable matrix has several branches, a human look at the intended semantics would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The narrowed join gate (absolute path, or relative with the cwd inside the executable) against join_onto_working_directory_in_executable in src/runtime/node/types.rs — same conditions, so fs.openSync and Bun.mmap hand the kernel the same string.
  • Buffer bounds on the verbatim copy: Valid::path_too_long rejects len >= MAX_PATH_BYTES and PathBuffer is exactly MAX_PATH_BYTES, so buf[path_len] = 0 is in range on both the raw and joined branches; buf_z borrows the pool guard that outlives it.
  • error_for_caller still sees the opened text in err.path for its ENOENT→ENOTDIR rewrite before the closure substitutes the written path.
  • In the as-written test, sealed and loop are created after unprivilegedSpawnOptions chowns the tree, which keeps sealed untraversable for the child whether or not the suite runs as root.
Extended reasoning...

The PR rewrites the non-Windows path handling of Bun.mmap in src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs so the kernel opens the path as written (joining only for standalone-executable paths), swaps the "Path too long" TypeError for an ENAMETOOLONG system error, and names the written path in every error; test/js/bun/util/mmap.test.js gains four tests including a --compile executable matrix and an unprivileged-child permission matrix. It touches no auth or crypto surface, but it changes which file a writable shared mapping targets for symlinked .. paths, which is the security-relevant motivation. Since my last review the author narrowed the join gate (d99e96d) and addressed every inline nit in code, and the bug hunt ran dry with no findings; the change is nonetheless a user-visible semantics change with a known pre-existing --aot divergence left open, so a human should confirm the intended behavior rather than this bot approving outright.

Nitpick Test the executable working directory after an embedded-to-disk change.

243-245: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Test the executable working directory after an embedded-to-disk change.

The fixture never changes from the embedded root to the disk before a relative mapping. A regression that keeps a stale executable working directory after a disk process.chdir would not fail this test. Adding Bun.mmap("cur/../config.json") between the two existing chdir calls would not close this gap. At that point the working directory has not been set to the embedded root, so the reset is not exercised. Enter the root first, then change to the disk, then map the relative path.

Suggested fix
+process.chdir(root);
 process.chdir(disk + "/app");
+Object.assign(out, {
+ "from app on the disk: link/.. relative": answer(() => Bun.mmap("cur/../config.json")),
+});
 process.chdir(root);
 Object.assign(out, {

Add the expected value to the toEqual object:

before changing to disk + "/app", then add a relative
Bun.mmap("cur/../config.json") case to Object.assign(out) and its expected value
to the assertion. This exercises the executable working-directory reset from the
embedded root to disk.

The row for the change from the embedded root back to the disk is in 3e4921f. The program enters the embedded root, returns to <disk>/app, and maps cur/../config.json. The row expects LIVE!. On main it gives STALE.
