What does this PR do?

It folds 197 open pull requests on Bun.sql (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite), bun:sqlite and node:sqlite into one change: 149 are replaced by it, 18 are closed without porting, 30 stay open. Most PRs were taken as a diagnosis; the files many of them patched were rewritten once. 257 files, +41,670 / -21,600: src +12,536 / -16,054, tests +26,903 / -5,100. CI ran the suite on Linux x64 / aarch64, musl, ASAN, macOS and Windows at this head (78e0830): every job that ran passed (178; one macOS aarch64 job could not download the build, two macOS x64 jobs got no machine). Numbers marked (release) compare CI's Linux x64 release binaries of main (f841e36) and of earlier commits of this PR, in user-space instructions unless a unit is given; the others are from a local debug + ASAN build.

How did you verify your code works?

102 SQL and SQLite test files on a Linux x64 debug + ASAN build against PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB containers: 5,918 tests pass; 8 time out on a machine at load 210 to 250, each of which passes alone or is known to depend on load. Nearly every new test was run on main first and fails there; the exceptions are guards that pin behaviour we keep. PostgreSQL parameters against main, cell by cell (value, type, mode): of 942, 726 are equal, 137 work that main rejects, 17 reject with another code, 44 are new errors, 18 stored another value (six cases: two are main's again since, four are listed). The option parser against main: 120,000 generated cases, every difference named; TLS is weaker than on main only on a unix socket (3,191), where url names another driver than a variable's name (14), or where the adapter's own URL rules and main read another adapter's (21); no file main opens read-only is writable. Option keys that an options object inherits are read where main reads them. On the wire against main, the startup packet and the number of round trips are the same (no parameter, one, jsonb + text + timestamptz, begin / commit; prepared and prepare: false); only a redundant Flush is gone. Client CPU (release, 43ad527): point select -48 %, 100-row select -30 %, insert -21 %. The pool, cancel(), MySQL pipelining and the bun:sqlite hooks were also run under randomized stress or differential scripts.

Behaviour changes to look at first

main -> now. The rule: a visible change stays only where main is broken (crash, hang, data lost or stored wrong, security hole, against its own docs); elsewhere this PR behaves like main, and the pull request that wanted the change stays open. Every bullet was run on main, on this branch and, where there is one, on the reference clients: postgres.js, pg, mysql2, mariadb, Node 26.3's node:sqlite, psql 15 (not better-sqlite3). ERR_*_X stands for the POSTGRES, MYSQL, SQLITE codes.

Waiting for the maintainer's word

  • Integers from 2^51 to 2^53 - 1 were float8 (MySQL: DOUBLE) -> int8 (BIGINT). PostgreSQL stored 2^52 + 1 as 4503599627370500 in numeric and 4.503599627370497e+15 in text; now exact. The price: select ${2 ** 52} as x returns a string and / 3 divides as integers, as from 2^31 to 2^51 already. On MySQL only VARCHAR was wrong; there * 4096 is a new errno 1690, and mysql2 and mariadb behave like main (sql: bind every safe integer number as int8 or BIGINT #43293).
  • An array with an enumerable raw is refused. Object.assign([text], { raw: [text] }), also what Babel's and swc's loose mode emit for a tagged template, ran text as SQL, as in postgres.js -> TypeError; tslib and the strict helpers (non-enumerable raw) still run. It closes ids.raw = [] on a data array pasting ids[0] into the SQL, which only the application itself can set. The own-property half of the check closes more: on main a polluted Array.prototype.raw = [] turns sql([userData]) into SQL text. The price is every tagged call compiled in loose mode (sql: only treat real template objects as tagged template calls #38219).
  • An untyped sql.array() has no cast. sql.array(["a", "b"]) without a type was cast to ::JSON[], so both examples of main's docs fail -> no cast, the server decides (sql(postgres): bind an untyped sql.array without a cast #41301, Bun.SQL: sql.array() binds json[], so a text[] column silently stores JSON-quoted elements #41242). Where it can't tell, main and postgres.js work and this PR doesn't: select ${sql.array([1, 2])} is the string {"1","2"}, unnest() 42725, array_length() 42804. Pass the type.
  • prepare: false: an object with its own toString() bound to json / jsonb was that string (decimal.js: the number 1.5) -> its JSON, as in a prepared query on main (postgres: encode Date and object parameters correctly with prepare: false #39452).
  • bun:sqlite db.transaction(fn), the minimal fix. When fn returns a native promise that is already rejected (an async function that throws before its first await), main committed -> rolls back and returns the promise. All else is as on main: an async callback commits at its first await, a throw behind it keeps the rows, and the docs now warn. The alternative is to refuse async callbacks outright (bun:sqlite: refuse an asynchronous callback in db.transaction() #45132), which also refuses what works today: async without an await, an await that comes last, a returned fulfilled promise or thenable.
  • bun:sqlite, not changed: without safeIntegers a BigInt parameter above 64 bits keeps its low 64 bits (2n ** 64n + 5n binds 5), as on main; a RangeError for it (a third of bun:sqlite: fix lone-surrogate encoding, out-of-range BigInt binding, and stale column names #32841) was in and is reverted. Proposed on this PR: reject below -2^63 or above 2^64 - 1, which still lets Bun.hash() output bind but makes a released call throw.

Silent: the same code gives another result

Loud: an error where main ran

Main was broken; code that leaned on it will notice

Costs

  • The first new Bun.SQL() of a process: 23.3 M -> 25.1 M (+7.9 %); the first bun:sqlite database +4.6 % (release).
  • bun:sqlite prepare + finalize: 21,739 -> 23,284 (+7.1 %, release), because statements report their native memory to the GC: 20,000 dropped 200-parameter statements 465 -> 27 MB.
  • More distinct texts than the statement cache holds are prepared again and again. PostgreSQL, 24,000 queries over N texts at max: 4 (release, limit still 256): N = 1,000: 2.0 -> 4.7 s, client CPU 470 -> 880 ms; N = 300: 1.4 -> 1.6 s. With 1,024 (debug builds) 1,000 texts cost what 300 cost; the step lies between 1,000 and 1,100. A full cache costs the server about 41 MB per connection (41 KB per statement with a join and ten columns); main has no bound.
  • A bulk insert with an undefined cell on PostgreSQL: +2.1 % (see Memory and performance).

New

query.cancel() works. It was typed and documented but did nothing. A query that isn't written yet leaves the queue, is never sent and rejects with ERR_*_QUERY_CANCELLED. On PostgreSQL a running query with nothing else written behind it is stopped by a CancelRequest on a second connection, outside max (same peer, same TLS settings and certificate check, at most 5 s) and rejects with the server's 57014. The session writes nothing until the server has closed that connection, so a late cancel can't hit the next caller's query. There reserved.close() / tx.close() also stop the running query (#33370, #44625).

COPY streams (PostgreSQL). query.readable() is a ReadableStream<Uint8Array> for COPY ... TO STDOUT, query.writable() a WritableStream for COPY ... FROM STDIN. Bytes only (text, CSV, binary), no row encoder. Backpressure both ways. close() / pipeTo() resolve when the server has stored the rows and reject with its error; abort() sends CopyFail, and so does the end of the transaction, savepoint or reservation that a stream is open on: begin() then rejects with that error and rolls back. The query still resolves with count. They are web streams, not Node streams, and a COPY without parameters always goes out as a simple query (#23350, #15088).

result.columns, result.statement. PostgreSQL: [{ name, type, table, number }] (OIDs, like postgres.js); MySQL / MariaDB: [{ name, type, table, length, flags }]. statement is { string, types, columns }. Both are built on the first read, prepared or not. The runs of a prepared statement share one object, which isn't frozen. On SQLite both stay null: capturing them cost a 1-row query +17 % to +34 % (main's release build) (#30037, #26809, #18866).

Column name transforms (all adapters). new SQL({ transform: SQL.camel }) reads column user_id as userId and writes user_id for sql({ userId }), sql("userId"). Presets SQL.camel, pascal, kebab; one direction with SQL.toCamel, SQL.fromCamel and so on; or { column: fn | { from, to }, undefined: value }. Names, directions and casing are postgres.js's. With undefined: value (null counts) a helper leaves no column out, like postgres.js. No value / row transform, so keys inside json aren't renamed (#36451, #15087).

sql.json(value) (all adapters) stores any value as JSON: a number, a boolean, null, an object or array on SQLite, and a JSON string where Bun sends a string as it is (MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, PostgreSQL with prepare: false). On PostgreSQL it returns a small wrapper, elsewhere JSON.stringify(value).

SCRAM-SHA-256-PLUS, channelBinding: "disable" | "prefer" | "require", also ?channel_binding= and PGCHANNELBINDING. tls-server-end-point, hash as in RFC 5929, RSASSA-PSS included, checked against libpq 15. require fails with ERR_POSTGRES_CHANNEL_BINDING_REQUIRED before anything derived from the password is sent. Off (disable) unless asked for, on the maintainer's decision: the login on the wire is main's. With prefer, psql's default, a login fails behind a proxy that terminates TLS but forwards the server's -PLUS offer (28000) and with an Ed25519 certificate (#41703).

SASLprep, by retry. A non-ASCII SCRAM password typed in another Unicode form than it was set in (NFD, soft hyphen) got 28P01 while psql logged in -> the first login uses the password as typed, like main; on 28P01 from a SCRAM role, if SASLprep (two replace and normalize("NFKC"), no Unicode tables) changes the string, Bun logs in once more with that form. The pool remembers which form worked; the LISTEN connection does the same (#41605).

tls.checkServerIdentity(hostname, cert) (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB). Called once per connection, after the chain verified and before anything is sent inside TLS; replaces the built-in name check. A returned object or a throw fails the connection with that value; a Promise is ERR_INVALID_RETURN_VALUE. Not called next to rejectUnauthorized: false (SQL half of #42054, #41856).

Re-prepare after DDL (PostgreSQL). After ALTER TABLE, DEALLOCATE ALL or DISCARD ALL every run of a cached statement failed forever (0A000, 26000) -> it is prepared again under a new name and the old one closed. The query is re-sent only when nothing is written behind it (a re-send would reorder writes) and outside a transaction block; otherwise it rejects with the server's error and the next run works. 20 concurrent runs after ADD COLUMN: main rejects 20 and every later run; now 19 at max: 1, 15 at max: 5, then none (#35120, #29484).

bun --hot keeps database connections (PostgreSQL, MySQL). Every save opened up to max new connections and never closed the old ones (2 4 6 8 10 12 sessions at max: 2) -> a new SQL() with equal settings takes over the previous load's idle connections when it would dial. Settings are compared by value; a function counts as changed. A pool of an earlier load closes only when nobody asked it for a connection during a whole load: a replaced pool lives one reload longer, a pool kept on globalThis and used is never touched. Session state (SET, temporary tables) survives, onconnect runs again for a reused connection. A module-level sql.listen() shares one LISTEN connection across loads (#25623, #23215).

MySQL / MariaDB pipelining. .simple() queries and queries whose statement is already prepared go out without waiting for earlier replies; an error fails only its own query. Nothing is written behind a text with a ; until it has ended, and a packet out of sequence fails the connection. Main's docs promise this; it sent one command at a time. Undo: BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_DISABLE_SQL_AUTO_PIPELINING=1. 4 executes through a proxy that holds each reply 30 ms took 124 ms on main, now 31 ms on both servers, 1 write instead of 4 (release) (#44022).

MySQL: sha256_password was documented, but every login failed with errno 1045.

Arrays as PostgreSQL array parameters. where id = any(${[1, 2]}) (08P01) and sql({ tags: ["a"] }) into a text[] failed -> a JS array or an Int32Array bound to a built-in array type goes as an array literal, with NULLs and nesting, also with prepare: false. The other typed arrays stay bytea; sql.array(new Float32Array([1.5])), which main rejects, puts them into an array column. Into text, an untyped position or a user-defined type an array stays String(value) (a,b), as on main and in postgres.js (pg: {"a","b"}), so an array of an enum needs sql.array(values, "mood"). A plain array into json[] / jsonb[] follows sql.array(values, "JSONB"): nested arrays are dimensions, null is the JSON value, undefined is SQL NULL, sql.json([1, 2]) is one element (that half of #33579, #29551).

MySQL / MariaDB foundRows: true, also ?foundRows=true: CLIENT_FOUND_ROWS, so affectedRows counts rows matched, not rows changed, the default of mysql2 and mariadb. Off by default, as on main (#30848, #30843).

libpq URL keys and variables. ?connect_timeout=, ?sslrootcert= ... went to the server, which refused the connection, and ?password= went out in the startup packet. Now read: host, port, user, password, dbname, connect_timeout, idle_timeout, max_lifetime, max, prepare, channel_binding, sslrootcert, sslcert, sslkey, sslpassword. Keys that only tune libpq (keepalives*, target_session_attrs ...) are dropped. Keys that restrict the connection (require_auth, sslcrl ...) still go to the server, which refuses them. New variables: PGUSERNAME, USERNAME, PGAPPNAME, PGOPTIONS, PGCONNECT_TIMEOUT, PGCHANNELBINDING.

bun:sqlite: db.function(), db.aggregate(), better-sqlite3's signatures (options varargs, deterministic, directOnly, safeIntegers); inverse makes a window function. What a callback throws comes out of get() / all() / run() unchanged. A BigInt result outside 64 bits follows the function's safeIntegers, like a parameter (#8558, #25703, #1474, #5051).

bun:sqlite: db.onInsert, db.onUpdate, db.onDelete = function (database, tableName, rowid, schemaName); null removes it. What a hook throws is an uncaught exception at once, and the statement goes on. While a function, aggregate or hook runs, every other call on that Database, close() included, throws "This database connection is busy executing a query". No commit hook (#12631, #4175). Small: db[Symbol.for("sqlite-type")] (#22109), stmt.reader, stmt.readonly (#16469), stmt.declaredTypes before the first run.

  • ?channel_binding= was forwarded as a startup parameter (42704). A server that offers no known mechanism got a SCRAM-SHA-256 answer anyway -> ERR_POSTGRES_SASL_NO_KNOWN_MECHANISM. A mandatory extension (m=) is rejected before the proof (sql(postgres): implement SCRAM-SHA-256-PLUS channel binding and enforce channel_binding=require #41703).
  • A SCRAM iteration count out of bounds failed with ERR_POSTGRES_INVALID_MESSAGE "Failed to read data" -> ERR_POSTGRES_SASL_ITERATION_COUNT_OUT_OF_RANGE with the count and the bounds (the error of sql(postgres): accept SCRAM-SHA-256 iteration counts below 4096 #38133). A GSSAPI / SSPI request showed an unfilled format string -> "GSSAPI authentication is not supported".
  • Over TLS the StartupMessage (user, database) was queued when the handshake started -> written once chain and identity are accepted.
  • A TLS 1.2 server that renegotiates reports a second handshake: both drivers sent their login again, and the next query got the reply to it -> ignored after the first.

Partly addressed

  • #39877: a bare key binds; an unknown key in default mode still binds NULL (strict: true throws).
  • #43113: not reproduced; the one route found to its errors (an open iterate() cursor) is closed.
  • #19130, #40077: expect() no longer hangs on a lazy Query; #19130's own script (Windows) didn't hang on Linux, #40077's other items are untouched.
  • #27102: the process no longer exits with a query in flight; its CONNECTION_CLOSED under load wasn't reproduced. #38277: MySQL half only.
  • #15088: its COPY item. #15087: SQL.toCamel and friends cover its SQL use. #18866: columns and statement, not state. #23175: cancel() works, no signal. #16665: new Bun.sql(url, options) applies the options.
  • #39450: Date and object are fixed; a Date into time / json with prepare: false still differs.
  • #28819, #40942: not changed, see Limits; sql.json() and the docs now say how to store each kind of value.
  • #26629: changed by reading, no such build was made. #16717: documented (macOS reports Apple's version). #26369: already fixed on main (#44618).
  • #44187: memory statistics and the connection mutex are gone; scaling like Node was measured on a loaded box only.
  • #20662: not changed; the docs give the PRAGMA synchronous = NORMAL tip.
  • #24662: async support isn't added; only a promise that is already rejected at the return rolls back, and the docs warn.
  • #45276: not changed, decided as on main (Limits).

Priority: ⬆️ High

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 68af8

This change rewrites large parts of the SQL pool and SQLite handling, but no concrete merge-blocking defect was found in this review. Two minor test-robustness items remain open: tests that expect empty stderr may be flaky on ASAN and debug builds, and one test builds a very large string slowly in debug builds. Merging is reasonable once the owner has seen these.

Explanation

The active directly linked coding requirements are implemented. SQLite changes cover schema refresh, custom functions and aggregates, update hooks, existing-file opening, strict and positional bindings, numeric column names, single-value prepare bindings, multi-statement errors, affected counts, statement-cache cleanup, and node:sqlite statement finalization and get performance [#1332, #1474, #4175, #9410, #13409, #16469, #18326, #18456, #25472, #28911, #30811, #37415, #40001, #44084]. SQL changes cover pool limits, draining timers, socket URLs, identifier quoting, authentication, environment variables, result metadata, JSON and array encoding, date encoding, NULL-pattern caching, stale-plan recovery, MySQL found-row semantics, FIFO writes, helper scanning, close behavior, LISTEN callbacks, TLS identity checks, failed-prepare recovery, graceful close, and MySQL database defaults [#23215, #23954, #24050, #25405, #26195, #26622, #26684, #26809, #28819, #28980, #29010, #29484, #29551, #30646, #30843, #32005, #32035, #32038, #32096, #32148, #39879, #40432, #41039, #41050, #41242, #41740, #41856, #42720, #42804, #44367, #45039]. The source summary identifies matching runtime, native protocol, pool, type, documentation, and regression-test changes. Closed issues were treated as historical context only.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within the linked Bun.sql, bun:sqlite, node:sqlite, and supporting test, type, documentation, protocol, TLS, timer, FFI, and runtime lifecycle scope. The BoringSSL certificate-hash code supports PostgreSQL channel binding. The event-loop, native bridge, statement-cache, and timer changes support SQL connection, query, or SQLite ownership behavior. Benchmarks, Docker configuration, type tests, and documentation support the linked objectives. No unrelated product feature is demonstrated.

Beyond the inline findings, a few other candidates were examined and ruled out: the db.transaction() TypeError for functions returning a promise (src/js/bun/sqlite.ts:740) is an intentional, documented change (docs/runtime/sqlite.mdx:576); the aggregate result callback path in SqliteUserFunction.h:249 runs under a top exception scope and the GC-driven finalize concern did not reproduce as a crash; and the libpq keyword filtering in options.ts:365 is a partial improvement over the base, not a regression.

Extended reasoning...

The ruled-out note records three concrete candidates checked beyond the posted inline findings on this consolidated SQL rewrite; it is informational and does not change the need for a human review of a change this size.

Still open from earlier reviews (3):

If you have decided not to act on one of these findings, resolve its thread (a reply alone leaves it open) and the next review stops counting it. To review this commit again now, use Re-run on its "Claude Code Review" check.

Inline comments:
Review comments at @scripts/build/deps/sqlite.ts:
- Around line 43-45: The shared SQLITE_DEFAULT_WAL_SYNCHRONOUS setting selects
NORMAL for WAL connections, differing from node:sqlite’s FULL default. Preserve
the shared default; either document this intentional durability difference for
node:sqlite or set synchronous to FULL in the node:sqlite connection-open path.

Review comments at @src/js/internal/sql/sqlite.ts:
- Around line 74-96: Update the row-returning path in the query execution flow
so a prepared first statement does not silently skip subsequent SQL statements;
use the native unparsed tail to execute the remaining statements after
collecting rows, or reject multi-statement input if that tail is unavailable.
Add coverage for multi-statement unsafe() or file() input whose first statement
returns rows, verifying the remaining statement executes or the query rejects.

Review comments at @src/sql/postgres/protocol/NewWriter.rs:
- Line 115: Add NUL-byte validation at the SQL query boundary used by both
write_query and the extended-query path, reusing the validation applied to
connection parameters before either query is sent. Leave NewWriter::string
unchanged so message lengths remain consistent with the validated query bytes.

Review comments at @test/js/node/sqlite/node-sqlite.test.ts:
- Line 2286: Replace the `.repeat()` call used to create `text` with a
`Buffer.alloc`-based construction that produces the same Latin-1 string.

Review comments at @test/js/sql/postgres-dispatch.test.ts:
- Line 12: Remove explicit test timeouts across the listed test sites: in
test/js/sql/postgres-dispatch.test.ts lines 12-12, remove the timeout constant
and its uses in test.concurrent.each and test.concurrent; in
test/internal/prestart-map.test.ts lines 38-38,
test/js/node/sqlite/node-sqlite.test.ts lines 2623-2623,
test/js/sql/postgres-duplicate-auth-request.test.ts lines 297-297,
test/js/sql/postgres-listen-notify.test.ts lines 412-412, and
test/js/sql/sql-empty-column-name.test.ts lines 56-56, remove the respective
timeout arguments; in test/js/sql/sql-onconnect-onclose-throw.test.ts lines
38-40, remove testTimeout and its uses while retaining fixtureTimeout for
Bun.spawn.

Review comments at @test/js/sql/sql-onconnect-onclose-throw.test.ts:
- Around line 126-136: Update the spawned-process assertions to tolerate
harmless stderr output: in the run/runFixture expectations throughout
test/js/sql/sql-onconnect-onclose-throw.test.ts and
test/js/sql/sql-empty-column-name.test.ts, accept any stderr string; in
test/cli/run/sql-preconnect.test.ts and
test/js/sql/sql-helpers-validation.test.ts, compare trimmed stderr or omit it;
and in test/js/sql/sql-options.test.ts, remove the exact-empty stderr assertion
or compare trimmed stderr.

Review comments at @test/regression/issue/28632.test.ts:
- Line 19: Remove the explicit 30,000 ms timeout from the test() call. If the
fixture exceeds the runner’s default timeout, reduce WARMUP_QUERIES,
MEASURED_QUERIES, or COLUMNS in the fixture instead of overriding the timeout.

The last 3 reviews of this pull request each found new blocking issues, repeatedly in src/js/internal/sql/pool.ts. Where they share a root cause, one fix may close them together.

Still open from earlier reviews (6):

If you have decided not to act on one of these findings, resolve its thread (a reply alone leaves it open) and the next review stops counting it. To review this commit again now, use Re-run on its "Claude Code Review" check.

Beyond the two inline findings, I re-checked the password path in src/js/internal/sql/pool.ts after the last two commits: the resolved password is now String()-coerced at pool.ts:423 before both the native argument and saslprep, and saslprep at pool.ts:366-373 falls back to the raw password for empty, control, right-to-left and astral input instead of normalizing it, so a non-string password no longer throws and those classes no longer diverge from the server. No other new issue found in that area.

Extended reasoning...

The latest commits (668e2cd, 235efa3) changed the SCRAM SASLprep fallback and the password coercion in pool.ts; both now match what the earlier review asked for, while the hot-reload retire logic at pool.ts:345-361 is unchanged. The two new inline findings (MySQL buffered-read retention, exception macro inside a lambda in JSSQLStatement.cpp) plus the 250-file scope keep this a human-review change.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/sql_jsc/mysql/MySQLConnection.rs:533 — Pre-existing: MySQL users who stream a large result keep most of the reply in memory, while this PR fixes the same buffering only for PostgreSQL. In read_and_process_data at src/sql_jsc/mysql/MySQLConnection.rs:533 a short read on the buffered path returns without dropping the packets already handled, so every later chunk that ends inside a packet is appended behind them. Fix: compact the read buffer on every short read, as PostgresSQLConnection.rs:945-949 now does (rb.head = 0; rb.consume(last_message_start); last_message_start = rb.head), and drop the unreachable reset at MySQLConnection.rs:537-538.

    Why this was flagged

    A MySQL query whose rows arrive in many socket reads, each read ending inside a packet, enters read_and_process_data at src/sql_jsc/mysql/MySQLConnection.rs:454 with read_buffer.remaining() non-empty. The buffered path at :503-507 sets head = last_message_start and appends the whole chunk to byte_list; process_packets at :545-572 only ever exits with ShortRead, which returns Ok at :533 without consuming or compacting, and :537-538 are never reached. Nothing shrinks byte_list until a chunk happens to end exactly on a packet boundary, when the unbuffered path clears it at :487; for p-byte packets that takes about p chunks, so the connection holds roughly p times the read size of already-decoded bytes. The base branch behaves the same on MySQL and on PostgreSQL; this PR adds the compaction for PostgreSQL at src/sql_jsc/postgres/PostgresSQLConnection.rs:944-949 but leaves the copy-pasted MySQL path as it was. No limit or timer bounds read_buffer on the MySQL side.

    Verification: Pre-existing: the base commit has byte-identical read_and_process_data. In src/sql_jsc/mysql/MySQLConnection.rs process_packets (:549-572) only exits via ShortRead at :552; the ShortRead arm returns Ok(()) at :533 with no consume, so :537-538 are unreachable and byte_list is cleared only at :487. The PR adds the fix for Postgres at src/sql_jsc/postgres/PostgresSQLConnection.rs:944-949 but leaves MySQL.

The MySQL event-loop fix (#38163, #27102) likely covers three triggers that have no issue of their own. On 1.4.3 (macOS arm64, MySQL 9.7) each of them exits 0 with the query unsettled, every time:

Trigger 1.4.0 1.4.1 1.4.3
reserve() → release() → query truncates truncates truncates
begin() → query truncates truncates truncates
second new SQL() → query on the first truncates truncates truncates
import { SQL } from "bun";

const a = new SQL({ adapter: "mysql", hostname: "127.0.0.1", port: 3306,
                    database: "test", username: "root", password: "" });

async function main() {
  await a.unsafe("SELECT 1");
  (await a.reserve()).release();            // or a.begin(), or a second client
  console.log(await a.unsafe("SELECT 2"));  // never resolves
}

main().catch(console.error);   // no output, exit 0

The promise has to be floated: with a top-level await main() it completes. These are the ordinary ORM paths: reading LAST_INSERT_ID() reserves a connection, transactions call begin(), a migration lock opens a second client. Could these three go into the test suite? The #26235 shape (two concurrent queries, then a third) passes on lucky runs, so on its own it is a weak regression test.

One request, if it fits the scope: #40254, per-connection initialization.

This PR already has the shape it needs. A MySQL connection waits for the OK of the session-setup SET time_zone before it takes queries, and onconnect now fires at the end of the handshake read, never after onclose. A user hook at that same point would close #40254:

  • it receives a query-capable handle on the new physical connection, not the pool;
  • it runs once per physical connection, including replacements after a reconnect, before the connection serves any caller;
  • if it rejects, the connection is closed and the dial counts as failed.

On PostgreSQL, connection: { search_path, TimeZone, ... } already covers most of this through the startup packet. MySQL has no equivalent, so sql_mode, the default isolation level or a session variable can only be set today on whichever pooled session runs the SET. Knex's afterCreate, mysql2's pool connection event and pg-pool's connect event fill this role on Node.js.

If it's out of scope for this PR, no problem. A note in #40254 on whether the rewritten pool is where it would land would already help.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether ~JSSQLStatement (src/jsc/bindings/sqlite/JSSQLStatement.cpp:2562) can run script from a GC sweep by finalizing a half-iterated statement that uses a db.aggregate() function — the hazard the node:sqlite side guards against. It does not: a GROUP BY aggregate is finalized (xFinal already run) before the row yields, so no MEM_Agg accumulator is live at an iterate() pause, and for a window function valueOrFinal takes the isWindow branch on xFinal, which only destroys the accumulator without calling the step/result callbacks.

Extended reasoning...

Ruled-out note only: the bun:sqlite statement destructor's sqlite3_finalize path was traced through SqliteUserFunction.h and SQLite's GROUP BY output ordering (output subroutine runs AggFinal before ResultRow, reset and the next AggStep follow the yield), so a swept statement cannot invoke a user aggregate's JS callbacks. The three inline findings stand on their own and still need the author's attention.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/js/internal/sql/postgres.ts — Users whose Postgres password SASLprep changes pay a failed login (28P01 on the server) on every listen() reconnect, and on the first listen() dial, where the base branch logged in once. The listen path's success callback at src/js/internal/sql/postgres.ts:575 never records which password worked, while the pool's PooledConnection does so at pool.ts:150, so each #connect at postgres.ts:557 starts again from adapter.saslprep (false) and retries only after a refusal. Fix: on a successful listen login store login.saslprep into the adapter (adapter.saslprep = login.saslprep) so later dials from listen() and the pool try the right password first. [also at: src/js/internal/sql/pool.ts:466 - Postgres users whose password SASLprep rewrites (NBSP, soft hyphen, compatibility letters such as "fi" or full-width text) get one failed login per connection the pool dials in a burst, so a cold start with max: 10 logs up to ten 28P01 failures on the server before the queries run.]

    Why this was flagged

    A program runs sql.listen() on a Postgres role whose password SASLprep alters (for example "ªⅨ", which the server stored as "aIX") and the listen connection is the first or only one it opens. createPooledConnectionHandle at src/js/internal/sql/pool.ts:441-466 sends the raw password first because login.saslprep is adapter.saslprep (false); the server answers 28P01, the onClose callback at postgres.ts:584-589 calls tryOtherPassword which flips login.saslprep and redials, and the second login succeeds. The success callback at postgres.ts:568-583 stores the connection but never writes login.saslprep back to the adapter, unlike PooledConnection.#handleConnected at pool.ts:150. The next reconnect after a drop (#connect at postgres.ts:552-557) starts with login = { saslprep: this.#adapter.saslprep } = false again, so every reconnect costs one refused login that the server logs as an authentication failure. On the base branch no SASLprep ran and the raw password was sent once per dial, so no refusals occurred.

    Verification: Triggered whenever a listen() connection is the one that discovers the SASLprep form of the password, on every reconnect after a drop. The success callback at postgres.ts:568-583 never writes adapter.saslprep = login.saslprep, whereas the pool's #handleConnected does that at pool.ts:150. The base commit has no SASLprep at all, so this is not a regression.

(This is Claude, working with Jarred on consolidating the open SQL PRs.)

@gerardp thanks, both comments were useful, and sorry for the slow answer.

The three triggers. All three are the same bug and this PR fixes them. I ran your three shapes on Linux x64 against MySQL, 5 runs each, counting the runs that printed the row:

Trigger main this PR
reserve() → release() → query 3 / 5 5 / 5
begin() → query 1 / 5 5 / 5
second client ran a query → query on the first 3 / 5 5 / 5

A second new SQL() that never runs a query did not trigger it here (5 / 5 on main): it has to connect.

On Linux main gets lucky when the reply to SELECT 2 is already there, so the tests use SELECT SLEEP(0.1) as the last query, floated from main() as in your script. That makes them fail on main every time. "After a transaction" and "after a reservation" were already in test/js/sql/sql-mysql-connection.test.ts ("a query that an idle connection gets … keeps the process alive"). I have added the two shapes that were missing: a reservation that ran nothing, and another client that ran a query. The five rows on MySQL and MariaDB: 10 fail on main, 10 pass on this PR's release build. The two new rows go up with the next push.

#40254. Not in this PR. It folds together pull requests that were already open, none of them implements the hook, and it is new API, so it should get its own design and review. It is listed under the known limits in the description. You read the code right about where it would land: the pool in src/js/internal/sql/pool.ts marks a connection as ready in one place for both adapters, after the handshake and MySQL's session setup, and the handle that reserve() returns is already a query-capable view of one physical connection. A hook that runs there, before the connection serves anybody, and fails the dial when it rejects, fits without new machinery. Whether and in what shape is Jarred's call; I will leave a note in #40254 once this is merged.

…ify again

Since #45304 a top-level Date was written as its ISO string for every
parameter type, json and jsonb included, without asking `toJSON`. So a Date
subclass with its own `toJSON` or `toISOString`, or any Date under a patched
`Date.prototype.toJSON`, was stored differently alone than inside an object,
and differently than before. For json and jsonb a Date is now what
`JSON.stringify` makes of it, like every other object; an Invalid Date is JSON
null there. Every other type still takes the instant.

A value whose JSON is undefined (a `toJSON` that returns undefined, a function
or a symbol) was sent as an empty string, which a text column stored. It is a
TypeError now, as on MySQL.

…before it has a connection

A query that is started with `.execute()` and that nobody handles does not end
the process when it fails. #45304 kept that only for a query that had reached a
connection. Three refusals that are new since #45304 were reported as unhandled
rejections where the same program used to be silent:

- `close({ timeout: 0 })` right behind the query, which now closes at once. So
  a last `insert ....execute()` before `await sql.close({ timeout: 0 })` made
  the process exit with code 1.
- a statement on a released reservation, an ended transaction or savepoint,
  which is now refused instead of running on a connection the handle no longer
  owns.
- `query.cancel()` before `query.execute()`.

They are silent again. What was reported before still is: a refused or timed
out dial, a refused login, a pool that is already closed, a `cancel()` while
the query waits for a connection, and whatever a `then()` or `catch()` handler
throws.
Jarred-Sumner added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 17, 2026
…ain for every caller

Since #45304 a pool that lost connections grows back: a caller that has to wait
makes the pool dial, unless a dial in flight covers it. When `max` is above the
number of connections the server has left, those dials are refused, nothing
remembered that, and every caller that had to wait cost another refused login.
A real PostgreSQL with 7 free slots and a pool of `max: 20` under load counted
more than 1,000 refused logins in 5 seconds, against 13 before #45304. Each one
is a forked backend and a FATAL line in the server's log, and the client paid
for them too.

The pool now remembers a dial that did not establish. While it still has a
connection for its callers to wait for, it asks the server again with one dial
at a time, after a pause that doubles from 40 ms to 1 second. A connection of
its own that closes may have left a place, so one dial goes out at once. A
login that was dialed after the last refusal clears the memory, and the pool
grows as before. There is no timer: the pause is looked at when a caller
arrives. A pool without any connection behaves as before: it dials until `max`
and rejects with the dial's error.
Jarred-Sumner added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 17, 2026
Since #45304 the array of values was read three times (four with
`prepare: false`), the last time while the Bind message was being written. A
program can get hold of that array: `sql.unsafe(text, values)` copies it with
`Array.prototype.slice`, which asks `Symbol.species`, and an indexed setter on
`Array.prototype` sees a tagged template's array being filled. With an accessor
on it, `close({ timeout: 0 })` during the last read was a panic ("range start
index 17 out of range for slice of length 1"), and `query.cancel()` made the
next query resolve with the cancelled query's rows.

The caller's array is now copied once, at the place where user code may run:
before any look at the connection's state, with the checks for a cancel and a
close behind it. The copy is made natively and filled with direct puts, so
script can neither reach it nor see it being filled, and everything after reads
only the copy.

Since #45304 the pool looked at `sql.options.max` each time it dialed. A write
to it after `new SQL()` used to change nothing. Now -1, 0, NaN, undefined,
"abc" or {} meant that no connection was ever dialed: every query of that
client waited for ever, without a rejection, and `connectionTimeout` did not
run. Infinity or 2 ** 53 made the first query dial in a loop that never
returned to the event loop, until the file descriptors were used up.
`sql.options.max = Number(process.env.POOL)` with the variable unset is enough.

The pool keeps the value that the constructor validated, and a later write
changes nothing again.
Jarred-Sumner added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 17, 2026
`close({ timeout: 0 })` closes a connection that is still in its TLS handshake
at once since #45304. When the kernel had refused the ClientHello's send just
before, usockets ended the pending handshake without a code and a reason, and
both drivers made a verification error out of that: an error with an empty
message, which is an assertion failure in debug and sanitizer builds. Release
builds dropped that error and reported "Connection closed".

usockets reports a failed handshake without a code and a reason only after our
own FIN with no chain checked, or on a socket that is already closed. A real
TLS failure always carries a text: EPROTO with OpenSSL's reason, ECONNRESET for
a peer that left, an X509 code for a chain. So reporting it as a closed
connection hides nothing.

No test: a scripted peer cannot make the kernel refuse the ClientHello (16
shapes tried). Checked before and after, on PostgreSQL and on MySQL, with a
tracer that makes the kernel refuse the send, on a debug build.

… out is reported again

The commit that made a query that is only started silent when
`close({ timeout: 0 })` drops it tested "the pool was torn down", which is also
true when the time of a graceful `close({ timeout })` runs out. There the query
never got a connection, it is dropped, and that was reported before #45304 and
after it. It is reported again. Only `close({ timeout: 0 })`, where the caller
says to drop what is queued, stays silent: the flag is now set by that branch
alone.
Jarred-Sumner added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 17, 2026
…the server said before

646e259 paused after a refused dial, and the pause skipped dials that the
pool had always made: a caller that arrived inside it was never dialed for, and
a dial that got no answer counted as a connection to wait for. Either could
leave a query unanswered although the server had room, for example a query of
the pool inside `sql.begin()` shortly after a rolling deploy. A release build
and CI showed it; a debug build on a loaded machine was too slow to.

This replaces that mechanism. With no connection ready the pool dials until
`max`, as before, and reads no clock and no memory there. Only the growth
beside a ready connection, which #45304 added, is limited: back to the most
connections the pool has had open since a dial last failed, and by one more
after a pause that doubles with each failure, from 20 ms up to 1 second. A login
ends the doubling. So at every arrival the pool dials at least what it dialed
before #45304 and at most what it dialed after it, and the clock can only add a
dial.

node:sea was the one node: module that did not resolve: importing it
threw "No such built-in module: node:sea", also for code that only asks
isSea() (oven-sh#39728). Bun has what the module describes under
another name, an executable made by bun build --compile with files
embedded in it, so the module now answers from that.

isSea() is true in a compiled executable. An asset is an embedded file,
and its key is the name Bun.embeddedFiles gives it. getAsset() returns a
copy in an ArrayBuffer or, with an encoding, a string. getAssetAsBlob()
returns a Blob of the bytes in the executable. getAssetKeys() lists the
keys. Outside of an executable they throw
ERR_NOT_IN_SINGLE_EXECUTABLE_APPLICATION, and a key without an asset
throws ERR_SINGLE_EXECUTABLE_APPLICATION_ASSET_NOT_FOUND, as in Node.js.
The bundled source code is not an asset. The module resolves with the
node: prefix only and is listed in module.builtinModules.

Three things differ from Node.js. There is no sea-config.json: what is
embedded is what bun build --compile was told. getRawAsset() returns a
copy, where Node.js returns memory of the executable that must not be
written to. getAssetAsBlob() does not copy, and has the type of the
file extension unless options.type names another.

The module is src/js/node/sea.ts, over four functions declared for the
bindings generator in node_sea.bind.ts. They read the module graph of
the executable and not Bun.embeddedFiles, which a program can change.

SOUP.md also records the rebase onto oven-sh/bun 017b243: Bun.INI
and Bun.CSV are declared with the bindings generator, query logging for
Bun.SQL is ported to the rewritten client, and the bun:sqlite
db.function() patch is dropped because oven-sh#45304 adds it
upstream.

…s size

Since #45304, when the oldest waiter was a reservation that could not be served,
every connect() and release() walked the whole queue in search of a plain query
to serve: 222 us of CPU per caller in a burst of 64,000, where it was 20 before.
Behind as many waiting reservations as the pool has connections nobody can be
served, so the walk stops there: 11 steps per caller at any size, where it was
as many as there were callers. The order of service does not change.

* docs(agents): regenerate workflow-engine example after array param change

* feat(db): use Bun.SQL listen() instead of a postgres-js LISTEN peer

Bun 1.4.0 ships listen(channel, onnotify, onlisten) on Bun.SQL. It runs
on its own dedicated connection (idleTimeout and maxLifetime set to 0),
re-issues LISTEN after a dropped connection and calls onlisten again.
That covers what the event dispatcher needs, so the Bun provider no
longer opens a second postgres-js pool just for LISTEN.

PgListenClient is now a driver-neutral structural type that both
postgres-js and Bun.SQL satisfy. The dispatcher keeps the subscription
object and calls unlisten() on it, since Bun.SQL's unlisten is a
prototype method.

New integration test for the Bun provider: the LISTEN backend survives
the pool idleTimeout (while an idle pool connection is closed), and
after pg_terminate_backend it re-LISTENs, fires onlisten again and
delivers NOTIFY. The admin-api test sends its sentinel via pg_notify so
it runs on both providers.
