…ack settles The handle kept the acceptQueries bit while COMMIT or ROLLBACK was in flight. A statement sent in that window was written after COMMIT or ROLLBACK on the same connection, so the server ran it outside the transaction. Clear the bit as soon as the callback settles. Fixes #43248

src/js/bun/sql.ts— Users who send a late insert with the helper form (txINSERT ... ${tx(row)}) after their begin() callback settled now get an unhandled rejection they cannot catch, on top of the expected rejection. The helper call tx(row) hits the guard at src/js/bun/sql.ts:665-669 in the new settle window and returns Promise.$reject; the outer template also rejects, so the inner promise has no handler. Fix: the helper form must never return a promise; return SQLHelper regardless of connectionState (as sql() does at src/js/bun/sql.ts:904-911) and let only the Query path reject, on both the transaction and reserved handles. [also at: src/js/bun/sql.ts:669 - pre-existing: a late chained statement such as tx....values() now fails with a TypeError instead of the documented ERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSED rejection.]Extended reasoning...
sql.ts:870 and :877 clear acceptQueries the moment the callback settles, so the guard at sql.ts:665-669 is now live for every late statement, which is exactly the population #43248 describes. A late insert is normally written as tx
INSERT INTO t ${tx(row)}. JS evaluates tx(row) first. It is a plain object, so on the base branch the guard is not hit and sql.ts:677 returns new SQLHelper. After the change the guard fires first and returns Promise.$reject(pool.connectionClosedError()). That promise is passed as a value into the template call. The template call then hits the same guard and returns a second rejected promise. The user awaits only the outer one in try/catch. The inner one is never observed, so Bun reports an unhandledrejection, which fails bun:test runs and sets exit code 1 in scripts. On base this shape only occurred after an explicit tx.close() cleared the bit at sql.ts:757, which is rare; the PR moves it to the common late-statement window. The dismissing finder read the base guard but not the argument-evaluation order. The new test uses txSELECT 'late'with no helper,…Verification: normal (widens a pre-existing defect in the untouched guard to exactly the population this PR targets) — triggered when a user issues a helper-form statement such as tx
INSERT INTO t ${tx(row)}on the transaction handle after the begin() callback settled but before COMMIT/ROLLBACK completes. Mechanism verified in /home/claude/bun/src/js/bun/sql.ts: - New lines 870 and 877 clearacceptQueries… -
🟡
src/js/bun/sql.ts— Users who stash the tx handle and call tx.close() after their callback returned now get a silent no-op, and any Query they created but had not yet awaited later runs on the connection after COMMIT, outside the transaction. On the base branch that close() cancelled every entry of state.queries at src/js/bun/sql.ts:790-792 before the lazy query could run. After the change acceptQueries is already clear at src/js/bun/sql.ts:870, so close() returns at src/js/bun/sql.ts:755 and cancels nothing. Fix: close() called after settle must still cancel pending state.queries (and unrun lazy Queries) even when acceptQueries is clear, or the settle path must cancel/reject them itself.Extended reasoning...
Trigger: inside the callback the user creates q = tx
INSERT ...without awaiting it, returns, then from outside calls tx.close() and later awaits q (the #43248 repro keeps the handle outside the callback). Base: callback returns, needs_rollback=false, COMMIT written (:874); close() passes the guard at :751-754, clears acceptQueries, calls query.cancel() on q at :791, sends ROLLBACK; when q is awaited, Query.#runAsync (query.ts:133-138) sees cancelled and never runs, so the statement never reaches the server. New: :870 clears acceptQueries before COMMIT; close() returns Promise.$resolve at :755 without touching state.queries; q is awaited, Query.then runs the handler, queryFromTransactionHandler (:172-197) checks only query.cancelled, and handle.run writes the INSERT after COMMIT, or after pool.release at :896 onto a connection another caller now owns. The dismissing finders compared only the ROLLBACK round trip and not the cancel loop that the early return now skips. Rate: every user of the close()-after-settle pattern with a lazy query. Remedy: in close(), when closed is not set, still…Verification: nit — triggers only when user code holding the tx handle calls tx.close() in the window after the callback returned but before the COMMIT/ROLLBACK reply arrives, and a Query created inside the callback (added to state.queries at src/js/bun/sql.ts:216 but never awaited) is awaited afterwards. Mechanism verified. The PR clears acceptQueries at src/js/bun/sql.ts:870 (success) and :877 (catch)…

🟡
src/js/bun/sql.ts— Users with a savepoint still running when the outer callback settles now get a stray ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT written after COMMIT on the same connection, plus an unhandled server error rejection, where before the change only the savepoint's own queries went out. The savepoint's queries are rejected by the new guard, so run_internal_savepoint enters its catch, and src/js/bun/sql.ts:822 checks only the closed bit, which finally sets only after the COMMIT round trip. Fix: the savepoint catch (and run_internal_transaction_sql at src/js/bun/sql.ts:656) must skip internal statements once acceptQueries is clear, not only once closed is set.Extended reasoning...
Trigger: the outer callback starts tx.savepoint(async s => { await s
A; await sB; }) and returns (or throws) without awaiting it; a fire-and-forget savepoint is a plausible user bug that base tolerated silently. Base: A and B run after COMMIT in autocommit, RELEASE SAVEPOINT errors server-side, one stray statement. New: :870 clears acceptQueries; sBhits :665-669 and rejects with the closed error; :812 throws into the catch at :821; :822 sees closed unset because finally (:890) has not run while COMMIT is in flight; :823 calls run_internal_transaction_sql, whose only guard at :656 is the closed bit, so ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT s0 is written behind COMMIT. Postgres answers ERROR 25P01 and the savepoint promise rejects with that server error instead of the closed error, unhandled because nobody awaited it. The connection is released at :896 with that exchange still pending. The dismissing finder framed this as an improvement because the stray statement fails server-side; but the PR's stated contract is that nothing reaches the server after settle, and the mysql path behaves the same…Verification: nit — triggers when a savepoint callback issues a statement after the outer callback has settled but before the COMMIT/ROLLBACK reply arrives (e.g. a fire-and-forget
tx.savepoint(...)whose first statement runs after the SAVEPOINT round trip). Mechanism verified in /home/claude/bun/src/js/bun/sql.ts: line 870 (and 877) clearsacceptQuerieswhileclosedis only set in thefinallyat line… -
🟣
src/js/bun/sql.ts— Users who call tx.close({ timeout }) while queries are in flight get their transaction COMMITTED instead of rolled back whenever those queries finish before the timer. At src/js/bun/sql.ts:783-787 the queries-finished branch clears the timer and resolves without sending ROLLBACK or setting the closed bit; the callback then returns and src/js/bun/sql.ts:874 sends COMMIT. Fix: both arms of the race must end the transaction the same way; after Promise.all settles, cancel remaining queries, send ROLLBACK and set closed, mirroring the timer arm at src/js/bun/sql.ts:771-781.Extended reasoning...
This is the same function the PR edits, and the PR's premise is that close() 'already uses this order'; the finder confirmed the lines are untouched but did not follow the path to its end. Steps: inside the callback the user awaits nothing and issues q = tx
UPDATE ...; q.then registers and the statement is written. The user calls await tx.close({ timeout: 5 }). :757 clears acceptQueries. :766 sees transactionQueries.size > 0 and timeout > 0. :771 arms a timer; :783 races Promise.all(pending_queries). The UPDATE reply arrives first; :784 clears the timer and :785 resolves. No ROLLBACK is written and closed stays unset. close() returns; the user's callback returns normally. :868 sets needs_rollback=false; :870 clears acceptQueries again (already clear); :874 writes COMMIT. The UPDATE the user asked to discard is committed. On base the same code runs, so this is pre-existing, but it sits inside the function under review and the PR text describes close() as the reference ordering. Every caller of close({timeout}) with fast queries is affected. Remedy: in the Promise.all arm, run the same…Verification: pre-existing — the base branch's
transaction_sql.closeis byte-identical (checked viagit show 367d939d:src/js/bun/sql.ts), and the PR's added line /home/claude/bun/src/js/bun/sql.ts:870 does not change this outcome; but the diff does edit the very COMMIT path (868-875) that this scenario ends on, so it is worth the author's attention. Trigger: inside thebegin()callback, a query is in…
tx(row) and reserved(row) build a fragment for a later query. On a handle that no longer accepts queries they returned a rejected promise that the query it was meant for never awaits, so it surfaced as an unhandled rejection. Build the fragment first and guard only the query path, like sql(row) does.

… scope Every statement of a transaction, savepoint or reserved handle is handed to the connection by queryFromTransactionHandler. It now refuses a statement whose scope, or a scope around it, is closed or ended. A scope ends when the statement that ends it (COMMIT, ROLLBACK, RELEASE SAVEPOINT, ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT) is handed to the connection. A savepoint callback gets its own handle and scope. SAVEPOINT, RELEASE SAVEPOINT and ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT belong to the scope that called savepoint(), and an array that the callback returns is awaited ahead of RELEASE SAVEPOINT. The two acceptQueries flips at the end of the begin() callback are gone: they refused statements that still reach the connection ahead of COMMIT.
…transaction-settle-window
…ind the end of its transaction
…e() wait for a reserved transaction
- RELEASE SAVEPOINT ends nothing. The savepoint becomes a part of the scope
around it, and its client goes on as a client of that scope.
- A ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT that is not sent, because the scope around the
savepoint ended first, leaves the error of the callback as the error of
the savepoint.
- reserved.release() closes the client at once and gives the connection to
the pool after a transaction of reserved.begin() ended.
- close({ timeout }) waits with Promise.allSettled. The error of a refused
query goes to whoever awaits the query, and is not reported a second time.
- tx.close() behind COMMIT or ROLLBACK sends nothing and waits for the answer.
The timer of tx.close({ timeout }) sends no ROLLBACK behind COMMIT.
- SavepointSQL stays a plain SQL client in the types.
- The mock servers can answer a statement with an error. New tests for a
refused RELEASE SAVEPOINT and ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT, and for the rows that
stay on a PostgreSQL and a MySQL server.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked three things and ruled them out: the new Promise.all/Promise.allSettled/Array.from calls in src/js/bun/sql.ts match the file's pre-existing use of the same statics (e.g. the Promise.all(result) awaits in the begin/savepoint runners), so they are not a new tamper-resistance regression; the savepoint() overloads in sql.d.ts widen an array return to an element-union array rather than the tuple begin() infers, which is a typing nit only; and rejecting late statements with the existing ERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSED code is consistent with what the tagged template already threw on an ended handle.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks transaction, savepoint and reserved-connection scope tracking in the bun:sql builtin plus matching types, docs and ~1,500 lines of tests, touching no auth or crypto surface. Findings were reported inline and the hunt stopped on a bug cap rather than running dry, so approval is not on the table; this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.
…ld a released savepoint into its parent
- A statement that runs after its transaction or savepoint ended rejects
with ERR_*_INVALID_TRANSACTION_STATE. ERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSED stays the
error of a lost connection and of a released reservation.
- The callback of savepoint() gets a client that is typed with a
savepoint() of its own.
- A released savepoint is marked merged. A savepoint that its client opens
belongs to the scope around it, so the chain of scopes does not grow.
- One function finds a fragment for the pool, reserved, transaction and
savepoint clients.
- reserved.release() adds no closure per reservation.
- The timer of tx.close({ timeout }) is as on main again.
- Tests: the real-server cases move to sql.test.ts and
sql-mysql.transactions.test.ts. New cases for the wait of
close({ timeout }), for release() around pool queries, two transactions,
a dropped connection and a repeated release, and for a ROLLBACK TO
SAVEPOINT that SQLite refuses. The child processes of the two
unhandled-rejection tests wait for the report, so the file leaves
flaky-tests.txt.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a user whose tx.close({ timeout }) timer fires after the runner already ended the transaction gets an unhandled rejection from Bun's own timer and a close() promise that never settles. The timer callback at src/js/bun/sql.ts:928-938 awaits run_internal_transaction_sql(ROLLBACK_COMMAND, state) with no try/catch; once the runner's finally at src/js/bun/sql.ts:1084 set closed, that call returns Promise.$reject(connectionClosedError()) at src/js/bun/sql.ts:813-816, so the async timer rejects and resolve() at :937 is skipped. Fix: the timer must settle close() on every path, e.g. skip the ROLLBACK and resolve() when state already has closed or ended, and catch a ROLLBACK failure so it resolves or rejects the close() promise instead of leaking.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: inside sql.begin the user calls tx.close({ timeout: N }) without awaiting it while a savepoint or a cancelled lazy query of the transaction is still pending, then returns from the callback. Promise.allSettled at src/js/bun/sql.ts:941 does not resolve because that pending item never settles, so the timer at :928 is what will end the wait. Meanwhile the runner sends COMMIT (:1059) and its finally sets ReservedConnectionState.closed (:1084). When the timer fires, run_internal_transaction_sql(ROLLBACK_COMMAND, state) at :935 hits the closed check at :813-816 and returns Promise.$reject(pool.connectionClosedError()); the await throws inside the async setTimeout callback, which nothing handles, so Bun reports an unhandled rejection and resolve() at :937 never runs, leaving the close() promise pending forever. The base branch has the identical timer body, so this is pre-existing. No safeguard covers it: the clearTimeout at :942 only runs when all pending work settles, and the ended early-return at :910 only applies to a later close() call, not to the timer of the first one.
Verification: pre-existing. When the timer fires, the async callback at src/js/bun/sql.ts:928-938 does await run_internal_transaction_sql(ROLLBACK_COMMAND, state) with no try/catch, and run_internal_transaction_sql at :814-816 returns Promise.$reject(pool.connectionClosedError()) because closed is set. The async arrow's promise therefore rejects with nobody handling it, and resolve() at :937 is never reached, so the close() promise never settles.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: nit, pre-existing: users who call tx.savepoint("name", fn) in the order the types declare get an unnamed savepoint, so the name never reaches the server. In savepoint() at src/js/bun/sql.ts:1022-1024 the $isCallable(name) branch moves the callback out of name and sets name = "" without first taking the string from fn, so save_point_name at src/js/bun/sql.ts:1032 becomes s0 instead of s0_name. Fix: when name is the callback, assign the string in fn to name (after the same sanitising replace) before clearing it, so both argument orders produce s_; this also keeps the (fn, name) order that test/js/sql/sql-pool-transaction-isolation.test.ts:369 relies on.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
packages/bun-types/sql.d.ts:110-113 declares savepoint(name: string, fn) as the only named overload, and test/js/sql/tls-sql.test.ts:191 and test/js/sql/sql-mysql.transactions.test.ts:211 call sql.savepoint("watpoint", async sql => ...). With that order savepoint(owner, fn, name) at src/js/bun/sql.ts:1011 receives fn = "watpoint" and name = the callback. src/js/bun/sql.ts:1022-1024 sees $isCallable(name), sets savepoint_callback = name and name = "", discarding the string. src/js/bun/sql.ts:1032 then builds s${savepoints++} with no suffix, so the wire carries SAVEPOINT s0 / RELEASE SAVEPOINT s0 and server logs or errors never show the user's name. The base branch had the identical branch in transaction_sql.savepoint, so this is pre-existing; the PR moves the code into the shared savepoint() function and adds JSDoc for the named overload without correcting it. No existing test asserts the wire name for the (name, fn) order, which is why it passes.
Verification: Trigger: a caller uses the overload the types declare first, tx.savepoint("name", fn). At src/js/bun/sql.ts:1022 if ($isCallable(name)) { savepoint_callback = name ...; name = ""; } discards the string that sits in fn, so line 1032 builds s${savepoints++} with no _name suffix and the server sees s0. The base branch has byte-identical logic (base sql.ts:857-867), so this is pre-existing.

ERR_*_INVALID_TRANSACTION_STATEwith the messagecannot run a query after its transaction or savepoint ended.ERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSEDstays the error of a lost connection and of a released reservation. Reason: retry helpers treat a closed connection as a reason to run the whole operation again. On main the tagged template on an ended transaction gaveERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSED. That changes too.sp !== tx. A property that a program sets ontxis not onsp. What a late statement does on main
SET LOCAL, noset_config(..., true), no rollback. With one free connection (max: 1, or a busy pool) it runs inside the transaction of the next caller, and commits or rolls back with that one.sql.begin()rejects and rows 42 and 52 stay. With this PR no row stays. The same holds for tasks insidetx.savepoint().Promise.race) around the callback: the job goes on afterROLLBACK. On main itstx.unsafe()statements commit inside the nextsql.begin()of the pool. With this PR they reject.unsafe(). drizzle-orm 0.45.4 sends every statement throughclient.unsafe()(bun-sql/session.js).How the scope works
TransactionStateis{ connectionState, parent, queries }. A reservation and a transaction have no parent. The parent of a savepoint is the scope whose client calledsavepoint().queryFromTransactionHandler(scope, ends, ...)is the one function that hands a statement of a client to the connection.endsis the scope that the statement ends (COMMIT,ROLLBACK,XA END,PREPARE TRANSACTION,ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT), or null. The bit is set at the hand-over, not when the callback settles, soforEach(async ...)statements that go out ahead ofCOMMITstill run. The first version of this PR clearedacceptQuerieswhen the callback settled. That refused those statements, and it sent a lateROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINTbehindROLLBACK.RELEASE SAVEPOINTends nothing. A released savepoint is a part of the scope around it, and its client keeps working liketx. Its record gets amergedbit, and a savepoint that its client opens belongs to the scope around it. So a program that opens each savepoint through the client of the one before it does not build a chain. OnlyROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINTends a savepoint client.SAVEPOINT,RELEASE SAVEPOINTandROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINTare statements of the calling scope. A savepoint that settles after its transaction ended sends none of them. On main a lateROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINTbehind a failedROLLBACKreopened the transaction on a connection that was back in the pool.sqlite-sql.test.tscompares the keys of the two clients. One function, fragmentOf, decides for all four clients if a call builds a fragment.tx.close()whileCOMMITorROLLBACKis unanswered returns a promise that the runner resolves when the transaction is over.savepoint()getsSavepointSQL & Pick<TransactionSQL, "savepoint">, sosp.savepoint()compiles.SavepointSQLdoes not change, so a plainSQLis still assignable to it.sql.ts:rejectmoved from the state record to a bound argument ofonTransactionDisconnected,onSavepointFinishedis one module-level function (no closure persavepoint()), and the unusedstoredErrorfield is gone.Behaviour changes, in full
unsafe(),file(),notify(),commitDistributed()androllbackDistributed()of a transaction or savepoint client reject withERR_*_INVALID_TRANSACTION_STATEwhen they run behind the end of the scope. The tagged template on an ended transaction rejected before, withERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSED. It now gives the same error as the other calls.COMMIT:begin()resolves and commits the statements that the dispatcher got beforeCOMMIT. Each later statement rejects and is not written. Example:items.forEach(async item => { ... })with two awaited statements per item, in a callback that returns. On main the second statement of every item ran afterCOMMITin autocommit mode, and nothing was reported. Now it rejects. The docs name this case.release()runs rejects withERR_*_CONNECTION_CLOSED. So does a query that anawait usingblock of a reservation returns withoutawait.reserved.release()closes the client at once. The pool gets the connection after every runningreserved.begin()transaction ended. The.d.tsnow types the return value asPromise<void>, which is what the function returns on main.close({ timeout })usesPromise.allSettled. It waits for all of the pending work (on main a query that failed ended the wait). It does not report a failed query as unhandled (on main it reported every failed query once more, and a failed query that nothing awaited was reported only there).savepoint()is typed likebegin(): an array of queries resolves to the results. Not covered
txinside a savepoint callback. They are statements of the transaction.reserved.begin()calls that run at the same time on one reservation. They share one server transaction.tx.close()that is not awaited, followed by the end of the callback: the wire order staysBEGIN, statements,ROLLBACK,COMMIT(sql: reject a query cancelled before it runs, finish close({ timeout }) when the work drains, send no COMMIT after tx.close() #44799).tx.close({ timeout })can sendROLLBACKbehind aCOMMITof the runner.reserved.close({ timeout })does not close the connection when the work ends before the timer.release()does not stop that timer (sql: reject a query cancelled before it runs, finish close({ timeout }) when the work drains, send no COMMIT after tx.close() #44799).close()cancels before it ran never settles (sql: reject a query cancelled before it runs, finish close({ timeout }) when the work drains, send no COMMIT after tx.close() #44799, sql: track a query on a reserved or transaction handle from its start #44932).close({ timeout })starts a query that never ran.ROLLBACK.Related

close({ timeout })skip a query that was started in the same tick. sql: track a query on a reserved or transaction handle from its start #44932 does it with the state that it needs.reserved.begin()while one runs. That is a new error, and a maintainer's decision.Suites
