Summary

The guarded merge helper's merged-head verification could stall or time out when its checkout was a blob:none partial clone. It tried to materialize a full worktree solely to run the Swift god-file and web vp checks.

This change computes the exact merged tree with git merge-tree --write-tree, then archives only the Swift/web paths those checks inspect. Merge-conflict detection and the existing guard checks remain fail-closed, while unrelated historical blobs are no longer fetched.

Summary by cubic

Fixes guarded merge checks timing out on blob:none partial clones. The helper previously materialized a full worktree to run the Swift god-file and web vp checks; it now computes the merged tree with git merge-tree --write-tree and archives only the paths those checks inspect, so unrelated historical blobs are no longer fetched. The base tree is archived separately for the red-base vp comparison (now with locked dependencies installed), since the merged archive is not a worktree. Merge-conflict detection and existing guard checks remain fail-closed, and merges are refused if the checked tree objects cannot be materialized. Makes refusal diagnostics portable on macOS by switching from paste to python3 for joining lists.

Written for commit 07e82b4. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Merge checks now evaluate checked files against the combined changes from the target branch and proposed update, while continuing to refuse merges with conflicts.
    • Merges are refused when checked files cannot be prepared for validation, and temporary files are cleaned up after these failures.
    • Base-branch webview checks now use a separately prepared baseline and install locked dependencies before validation.

📝 Walkthrough

merged_head_checks now computes a merge tree and archives paths used by its checks. It refuses merges with conflicts or archive failures. The base webviews comparison uses a separate archive and frozen-lockfile install.

Changes: Merge check preparation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compute and materialize merge tree
scripts/gh-merge-green
merged_head_checks uses git merge-tree --write-tree and archives checked paths into a temporary directory. It refuses the merge if materialization fails. The base webviews comparison uses a separate archive and runs the frozen-lockfile install before vp check. Vercel check output joins flagged filenames with Python. Detached-worktree creation and cleanup are removed.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: azooz2003-bit

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 50dd4

Guarded merges with Swift changes may be refused because the archived files lack repository access needed by the checker. Resolve that path before merging. Failed base webviews comparisons now refuse the merge.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, preserved safeguards, and validation. It is mostly complete, but it omits the template's Changelog, Proof, and Checklist sections and uses "Validation" instead of "Testing."

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green. The diff replaces a detached Git worktree with git merge-tree --write-tree and targeted git archive calls, pluses freeze/vp diagnostics. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderers, PTY readiness, input routing, snapshots, auth, idempotency, revision fences, or leases. The custom check is therefore inapplicable.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green. The diff adds no browser.* socket command, WebKit/AppKit access, worker-router routing, or browser policy test change. The rule applies to Sources/TerminalController.swift and the control-socket policy files, which are unchanged.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green; the authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift code. Therefore it does not add or move an expensive synchronous agent-history load onto the main actor or an interactive path.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

The pull request changes only the CI shell helper scripts/gh-merge-green. It does not change production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript code, and it does not substitute a cache for an authoritative read in a persistence, history, undo, or snapshot path.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only scripts/gh-merge-green and introduces no fixed sleep, timer, polling loop, delayed dispatch, or wall-clock retry. The existing sleep 3 loop remains unchanged in behavior; only its line number shifts. The new logic uses git merge-tree, git archive, and direct checks.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only scripts/gh-merge-green. Its new collection work is linear: one pass over changed paths and one pass over Swift paths for existence checks. The git archive commands use a fixed list of paths, and the new Python formatting joins are linear. The diff adds no nested scalable-collection scan, per-target rescan, hot-path repeated sort/filter, in-memory join, or unbenchmarked slower algorithm.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green (+27/-13). It changes Git archive and shell-check behavior, not cmux-owned Swift code. No added lines introduce Dispatch queues, Combine state, completion-handler APIs, or fire-and-forget Tasks.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS — The authoritative pull-request diff changes only scripts/gh-merge-green. It contains no .swift files, Swift declarations, or Swift call sites. Therefore the @concurrent rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

The PR changes only scripts/gh-merge-green. It does not modify a SwiftPM package, Package.swift, any Package.resolved, an Xcode project package reference, a .gitignore, a workflow file, or dependency pins. The SwiftPM lockfile policy is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes scripts/gh-merge-green, an internal merge/CI helper documented for team members and CI operators, not a cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API path. Its added refusal and diagnostics report merge-tree materialization, Git paths, bun/vp, and commit references. The review rule permits provider and implementation details in internal CI and operator diagnostics. No changed text reaches cmux end users or exposes prohibited secret or personal data.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR changes only the operational scripts/gh-merge-green helper. The added refusal text and revised vp diagnostics are merge-check operator output, not Swift UI or web product copy. The diff adds no Swift localization keys, app catalogs, web messages, locale registry entries, metadata, or user-facing application data.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green (a shell script). The diff contains no Swift, SwiftUI, ObservableObject, @Published, @Observable, GeometryReader, list-row, or render-time state changes. The SwiftUI state-layout rules are not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green (+27/-13). It does not modify Swift architecture, lifecycle ownership, or Swift state. The added logic uses Git archive/tree handling and Python formatting, not sleeps, polling, locks, observers, side channels, duplicate Swift entrypoints, or split UI ownership.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green; the authoritative diff contains no Swift or SwiftUI source changes and adds no standalone cmux-owned window code. The auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The PR changes only the hand-written executable script scripts/gh-merge-green. The diff adds runtime use of temporary directories and archives, but it adds no temporary folder, generated output, cache, log, screenshot, recording, dependency checkout, or other artifact path to source control. The changes are intentional CI/merge-check script logic.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only scripts/gh-merge-green. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files and no files under a production Sources/ path, so it cannot introduce a test or debug seam in production Swift source.

Follow-up validation on exact head 2071334f2b7a2:

  • python3 -m unittest -v tests.test_gh_merge_green.FreezeRegression — 6/6 passed
  • bash -n scripts/gh-merge-green — passed
  • git diff --check — passed

The follow-up also fixes BSD/macOS paste incompatibility so freeze diagnostics preserve the actual frozen paths.

Passes: CI passes on 07e82b43ac.

CI passes on 07e82b43ac (run 39131330186 attempt 1).

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.

CI fast guards passes on 07e82b43ac (https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/39131330186). This covers only the fast guards, not CI: CI's result is the ci-status check, and the CI failure attribution comment names any failing test.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve repository access for the Swift checker.

When a PR changes a Swift file, this archive creates $merged without Git metadata. The base branch’s check-no-godfiles.sh runs git -C "$root" rev-parse --show-toplevel and exits if that command fails. The guarded merge then refuses even a clean Swift change. Give the checker access to $repo_dir while it measures the archived merged files. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Materialize every tracked Swift file used by the guard.

If a PR adds an export-ignore attribute for an unchanged Swift file, git archive omits that file from $merged. The changed Swift file can remain present, so the path check at Line 932 passes. Once the separately reported Git-access failure is fixed, the god-file checker can measure an incomplete module and miss an over-budget type. Compare the extracted Swift files with the merged tree, or materialize their raw blobs without archive attributes. Git documents that git archive applies export-ignore. (git-scm.com)

(merge.renameLimit=100000). manaflow-ai#21310 (0d5316d, export npm_config_prefix)
is now on main; it is a superset of feat's manaflow-ai#21311 copy, so the resume
workflows keep one version (main's). No Swift, Rust, Go or package manifest
change survives the merge (daemon/remote/go.mod unchanged).

Conflict choices:
- 209 modify/delete and 1 rename/delete in the legacy app, legacy CLI,
cmuxTests, legacy Swift packages and Resources/Localizable.xcstrings: kept

- cmux.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj, cmux.xcworkspace/contents.xcworkspacedata,

  merge-gate change-area test merged in.
- scripts/ci/compile-app-host-test-product.sh: main's logic (the legacy
cmux target builds without the compilation cache on every Xcode); the

- scripts/gh-merge-green: main's version (multiple freeze tokens manaflow-ai#21584,

freeze expiry and owner/pr/head metadata, and the canonical merged path.
- scripts/install-cmux-tui-client.sh: union of the header comments (main's
total download budget manaflow-ai#16305 and feat's attestation retry text).
- web/data/cmux-shortcuts.ts: feat's generated table.
- web/services/vms/workflows.ts: feat's doc comment on requireUserVm.
- Run API: feat's version (manaflow-ai#21337, open lanes manaflow-ai#21634/manaflow-ai#21305 build on it).
