What changed

Adds the first production slice of the Cloud Run control plane: durable team-scoped Runs and attempts, fenced worker leases, cancellation and replay-safe checkpoints, exact source/setup receipts, attach tickets, event/artifact replay, retained VM promotion, and a protected cron recovery path.

The managed dogfood now creates an asynchronous Run, polls its durable receipt, verifies the exact GitHub commit and .cmux/setup.json digest, reuses the retained Freestyle VM for the terminal journey, checks attach-ticket expiry and single-use redemption, exercises promotion, and records cleanup. A daily staging-only dogfood schedule is included; Huge Blue remains fail-closed.

Validation

  • bun run typecheck
  • targeted ESLint for Run routes/services/tests
  • bun run lint:complexity
  • source/setup, worker-contract, and dogfood probe tests
  • live PostgreSQL behavior suites: 8 passed, 0 failed, 34 expectations (leases, expiry/replay fencing, cancellation, bounded concurrency, team idempotency/isolation, immutable artifacts, attach TTL/single-use)
  • actionlint .github/workflows/cloud-vm-dogfood.yml

The actual Freestyle dogfood requires deployment of this exact head; the workflow is ready to run against staging after the PR is deployed.

Summary by cubic

Adds durable team-scoped Runs and attempts backed by a protected cron worker, replacing the synchronous user-scoped flow. The Freestyle dogfood journey now creates an asynchronous Run, verifies the exact GitHub commit and .cmux/setup.json digest, and reuses the retained VM for the terminal session.

Key changes

  • Runs are team-scoped with per-team idempotency; new partial unique indexes leave legacy user-scoped rows untouched.
  • Attempts claim fenced leases, and cancellation, checkpoints, and terminal transitions go through a shared state-machine guard with replay-safe events.
  • Attach tickets are hashed, single-use, and expire; retained VMs can be promoted into the existing Cloud machine lifecycle.
  • A new migration adds owner_team_id, run spec JSONB, cancellation event kinds, and attempt lease/retention columns.

Validation

  • Typecheck, targeted ESLint, complexity lint, and contract/dogfood probe tests pass.
  • Live PostgreSQL suites pass 8 tests with 34 expectations covering leases, expiration and replay fencing, cancellation, bounded concurrency, team isolation, immutable artifacts, and attach TTL/single-use redemption.
  • The dogfood workflow runs against staging after this head is deployed; Huge Blue stays fail-closed.

Written for commit e291bba. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds team-scoped durable runs with queued, leased attempt execution and Freestyle source verification. New APIs expose run receipts, events, cancellation, attach tickets, and promotion. A scheduled worker processes runs, and the dogfood journey exercises run creation, VM access, promotion, and cleanup.

Changes: Durable team runs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Run persistence and admission
web/db/migrations/*, web/db/schema.ts, web/services/runs/repository.ts, web/services/runs/view.ts, web/tests/runs-api-db-behavior.test.ts
Runs gain team ownership and specifications. The repository scopes run reads, enforces team idempotency and admission limits, and stores immutable artifacts. Receipts include events, attempts, and artifact metadata. Database tests cover scope, admission, idempotency, and artifact behavior.
Run specifications and source verification
.cmux/setup.json, web/services/runs/spec.ts, web/services/runs/sourceVerification.ts, web/tests/sourceVerification.test.ts
Run variants accept digest-checked instructions, and resource limits are capped at 900,000 ms. Freestyle execution verifies the requested GitHub commit and setup-manifest digest, runs validated setup steps, and validates execution receipts.
Leased attempt execution and queue processing
web/services/runs/worker-contract.ts, web/services/runs/worker.ts, web/services/runs/runner.ts, web/tests/runs-worker-*, web/app/api/cron/runs/route.ts, web/vercel.json
Workers claim attempts under leases, apply guarded state transitions, and handle cancellation. The runner provisions or resumes VMs, executes commands, stores artifacts, and cleans up machines. A cron endpoint and schedule invoke queue processing; tests cover lease fencing, concurrency, and cancellation.
Run API and lifecycle controls
web/services/runs/http.ts, web/services/runs/cloudClient.ts, web/services/runs/attach.ts, web/services/runs/promotion.ts, web/app/api/runs/*
Run routes create, list, read, cancel, and return events. Attach-ticket routes issue and redeem scoped tickets; promotion routes associate a retained attempt with a running Cloud runtime.
Dogfood journey and scheduled workflow
web/scripts/cloud-vm/dogfood-journey.mjs, .github/workflows/cloud-vm-dogfood.yml
The journey polls run completion and checks source receipts, attach-ticket behavior, VM connections, promotion, and cleanup. The workflow runs daily and uses staging and false when the corresponding inputs are unset.

The new staging dogfood journey requests a retention period above the new limit, so every run, including the daily scheduled run, fails at creation. Separately, if a run's owner session cannot be created, its attempt is never marked failed and can be retried repeatedly, and the run keeps counting toward the team's active-run limit. Fix both before merging.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the durable Runs feature, dogfood behavior, validation performed, and remaining deployment-dependent verification. It uses different headings from the template and omits explicit Changelog, Proof, and Checklist sections, but the core required information is present.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

The diff does not add manual renderers, Ghostty runtime admission, or persistent transport code. The dogfood keeps one long-running cmux-tui link process and changes only its route; new links occur after deliberate link loss or client relaunch, which the rule permits. The worker reuses one authenticated Cloud client per claim for multiple VM operations, while Run routes retain auth, team scope, idempotency, ticket, and lease fences. No explicit failure condition is introduced.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

The reviewed diff contains no Swift, Xcode project, or Swift workspace files. All changed paths are TypeScript, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, YAML, or configuration files, so this check's Swift actor-isolation failure conditions are not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only web, workflow, database, and JavaScript/TypeScript run-control files. The authoritative diff contains no Sources/TerminalController.swift, ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift, or browser socket automation commands. It does not introduce or worsen the WebKit/AppKit worker-lane conditions in the rule.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

The pull request changes only TypeScript, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, and YAML files. It contains no Swift changes, so it cannot add or move an expensive synchronous Swift agent-history load onto the main actor or an interactive path.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

The diff does not replace an authoritative read with a cache. Run snapshots and receipts read current rows from PostgreSQL through readRunSnapshot and listRunSnapshots, including runs, attempts, events, and artifacts. The after() queue trigger is documented as a latency optimization, not as a data source; the durable queue and cron provide recovery. No cached value appears in a persistence, history, undo, or snapshot path.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

The pull request changes TypeScript, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, YAML, and test files only. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift declarations, so the Swift @concurrent check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes one workflow, but it does not change SwiftPM packages, Xcode package references, .gitignore rules, or dependency pins. The changed workflow only adjusts scheduling and dogfood defaults, so the SwiftPM lockfile conditions do not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed diff contains no Swift, Objective-C, or Objective-C++ files. The changed files are TypeScript, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, YAML, and tests. Therefore, the Swift logging rule has no applicable changed code.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

No concrete cmux end-user path is present for the changed Run messages. The only in-repository caller is the managed dogfood workflow, which writes results to GitHub Actions summaries and artifacts and is an operator diagnostic surface. The Run HTTP wrapper returns generic text for unexpected provider or database failures; the provider-specific validation text is not shown by an app UI or product CLI in this repository. The changed API routes alone do not establish end-user scope under the rule.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only web TypeScript/JavaScript, SQL, JSON, YAML, and test files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift or SwiftUI files, so the SwiftUI state-layout failure conditions do not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes no Swift files. The custom check applies only to Swift changes that add or materially change standalone cmux-owned windows, so the auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

All 28 changed paths are source, tests, migration/schema, workflow, deployment configuration, or the intentional .cmux/setup.json product manifest. The diff adds no artifact directory, logs, screenshots, recordings, cache, checkout, build output, or package download. Runtime /tmp paths and runner temporary output are code behavior, not checked-in artifact paths.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

The pull request changes no Swift files under any production Sources/ path. All changed files are web TypeScript/JavaScript, SQL, JSON, or workflow files, so the specified production Swift seam check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

The PR adds production timing coordination in two places. web/scripts/cloud-vm/dogfood-journey.mjs:132-149 polls GET /api/runs/:id and sleeps 250–5000 ms until completion. web/services/runs/runner.ts:82-86 adds a raw 20-second setInterval to renew worker leases. These hide run-readiness and lease-lifecycle state behind elapsed wall-clock time. The existing dogfood delays are not needed for this finding.

Resolution

Replace waitForRun polling with a completion event or other owner-provided run state transition, with a bounded cancellation-aware timeout. Replace the raw lease-renewal interval with a dedicated cancellation-aware lease scheduler owned by the worker lifecycle, and add tests for cancellation, lease expiry, and renewal failure.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

New production code in web/services/runs/worker.ts:345-377 performs a per-target rescan. reconcileCancelledRunAttempts loops up to 500 times, and each iteration runs a fresh ordered SELECT ... LIMIT 1 over run_attempts before updating one attempt. This gives batch cancellation recovery repeated collection scans instead of a one-pass batch plan. The cron worker invokes this path from web/services/runs/runner.ts:114.

Resolution

Replace the loop with one bounded database batch using a CTE and FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, update all selected attempts in one statement, and insert cancellation events as a grouped batch. Add an index covering the cancellation predicate and ordering if query planning requires it. Preserve the existing run-lock fencing semantics.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR adds literal English API response copy without a locale-specific source. Examples include messages in web/app/api/runs/route.ts, the attach-ticket and promote routes, web/app/api/runs/[id]/events/route.ts, web/services/runs/http.ts, attach.ts, and promotion.ts. These messages are returned through RunHttpError or stored in Run receipts. No web/messages/ file changed, while web/i18n/routing.ts lists 20 supported locales.

Resolution

Replace user-facing API and Run receipt messages with stable localized message keys resolved through next-intl or another locale-aware source. Add matching translated entries to every locale in web/i18n/routing.ts: en, ja, zh-CN, zh-TW, ko, de, es, fr, it, da, pl, ru, bs, ar, no, pt-BR, th, tr, km, and uk. Keep machine error codes and protocol tokens literal, but do not use literal English for response or persisted user-facing copy.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 32.86% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 70 functions across 24 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

retainMs: 20 * 60_000 exceeds the new spec maximum, so POST /api/runs returns 400.

normalizeResources in web/services/runs/spec.ts Line 160 now caps resources.retainMs at 900,000. This value is 1,200,000. integer() throws RunSpecValidationError, and the route returns 400 run_invalid_spec. Every dogfood journey fails at runCreate, including the new daily schedule.

Add clock-skew margin before the first expiration redemption.

runAttachTicket calculates expiresAt with the application server's Date.now(), but redemption compares it with PostgreSQL's now(). The current 1,200 ms wait leaves only about 200 ms of margin, so clock skew can make the check intermittently return success.

Wait until the TTL plus the supported clock-skew margin before the first redemption. Do not poll this redemption call: a successful redemption sets redeemedAt, so a later 410 would only prove single-use, not expiration.

Update the expiration check in the dogfood journey after minting the short
attach ticket to wait for the 1,000 ms TTL plus the supported clock-skew margin

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Load list snapshots in batched queries instead of one snapshot per run.

listRunSnapshots returns up to 50 run IDs. It then calls readRunSnapshot for each ID. Each call runs one scoped run query and three child queries, so one GET /api/runs costs about 201 database round trips. Each snapshot also loads up to 1,000 events. In the worst case, one list response serializes about 50,000 event rows.

Load attempts, events, and artifacts with inArray(runId, ids) in three queries, then group the rows by runId. Cap or omit events in the list view. Clients can page events through /api/runs/:id/events.

The instruction text can end the CMUX_RUN_SCRIPT heredoc early.

instruction is user input of up to 16,000 bytes, and it can contain newlines. quote() protects single quotes only. replaySafeGuestCommand embeds the script in a <<'CMUX_RUN_SCRIPT' heredoc. If the instruction contains a line that is exactly CMUX_RUN_SCRIPT, the heredoc ends at that line. The outer bash -c then runs the remaining instruction lines as shell commands. Those commands run outside the receipt.tmp redirect and outside the started/completed replay protocol.

Encode the instruction so that no instruction line can match a delimiter.

Update the instruction handling in the work-command construction so
user-provided lines cannot terminate the CMUX_RUN_SCRIPT heredoc and run as
shell commands. Encode the instruction before embedding it in the command, then
decode it when passing it to codex; preserve the existing output redirection and
behavior when no instruction is provided.

Handle pre-execution failures in processClaim.

processRunQueue calls processClaim directly. It does not pass processClaim to runOneRunAttempt, so the helper's error handler does not protect this path.

The owner check and runCloudClient call occur before processClaim's try block. Their errors can leave the attempt in running without a failed transition. The expired attempt is then eligible for reclamation, so a persistent failure can repeat and prevent completion. The rejection also skips the second cleanupRunMachines() call.

Move both statements into the try block.

Do not emit an artifact URI without a matching route.

runReceipt emits /api/runs/${run.id}/artifacts/${artifact.id}, but the PR adds no matching artifact route. A client that follows this URI can receive a 404. Add the route, or omit uri until the route exists.

134 main commits since the last sync (3e7ed5a). Full rename detection
(merge.renameLimit=100000). manaflow-ai#21310 (0d5316d, export npm_config_prefix)
is now on main; it is a superset of feat's manaflow-ai#21311 copy, so the resume
workflows keep one version (main's). No Swift, Rust, Go or package manifest
change survives the merge (daemon/remote/go.mod unchanged).

Conflict choices:
- 209 modify/delete and 1 rename/delete in the legacy app, legacy CLI,
cmuxTests, legacy Swift packages and Resources/Localizable.xcstrings: kept
  deleted.
- cmux.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj, cmux.xcworkspace/contents.xcworkspacedata,
  docs/cli-contract.md, tests/test-execution.toml: feat-cmux-next's side.
- ci-macos.yml, seed-derived-data.yml, restore-app-host-test-product.sh,
  package-test-lane.sh (CmuxTextActions), tests/test_ci_change_areas.py
  (app-host admission block): feat's side; main's rsync --no-times edits
are for CmuxAgentJournal framework staging that feat deleted. Main's new
  merge-gate change-area test merged in.
- scripts/ci/compile-app-host-test-product.sh: main's logic (the legacy
cmux target builds without the compilation cache on every Xcode); the
  test (test_ci_test_compilation_cache_seed.sh) keeps feat's one-scheme
  checks with main's every-Xcode loop.
- nightly.yml and tests/test_nightly_universal_build.sh: feat's side (feat
already had manaflow-ai#21761's empty DerivedData start via manaflow-ai#21762, plus the
  nightly-next build-state prepare and its no-replay check; manaflow-ai#21544's
promotion change was already on feat via manaflow-ai#21533). Feat's WRITER gate,
live HOLD read, recovery guard, legacy-identity split, Mach-O floor,
macOS 15 launch job and bash 3.2 parse hardening kept.
- scripts/gh-merge-green: main's version (multiple freeze tokens manaflow-ai#21584,
merge-tree merged head manaflow-ai#21576, missing Swift path refusal manaflow-ai#21560, risk
evidence manaflow-ai#21692) plus feat's "cmux-next Swift canary" required check,
freeze expiry and owner/pr/head metadata, and the canonical merged path.
- scripts/install-cmux-tui-client.sh: union of the header comments (main's
total download budget manaflow-ai#16305 and feat's attestation retry text).
- web/data/cmux-shortcuts.ts: feat's generated table.
- web/services/vms/workflows.ts: feat's doc comment on requireUserVm.
- Run API: feat's version (manaflow-ai#21337, open lanes manaflow-ai#21634/manaflow-ai#21305 build on it).
