Prototype, for review. Not deployed and not exposed to ChatGPT yet. Part of #16567.

ChatGPT, Claude and other MCP hosts have no way to drive cmux Cloud. This adds POST /api/mcp, a remote MCP server (streamable HTTP, stateless JSON replies) with five tools that act only on the caller's own machines:

Tool Hints On the machine
list_machines read-only none (same query as GET /api/vm)
list_terminals not read-only (see below) cmux-tui --session cloud terminal list
run_agent write workspace create --empty, then workspace <ws> run --on-exit keep -- bash -lc 'cd "$HOME" && exec "$@"' bash claude -p -- <prompt> (codex/opencode use the cmux vm agent one-shot forms with --; pi refuses a prompt starting with -). If the run fails, the workspace is closed.
read_terminal not read-only (see below) terminal <id> screen read, or output read --max-bytes 65536
send_input write, destructive one terminal <id> write --text <text>, with a trailing CR if submit

Scoping

  • No new authority. The tools call the existing listUserVms and execVm Effect programs through runVmRoute. Ownership (requireAccessibleUserVm), team scope, plan gates, resume and usage events are therefore exactly what /api/vm enforces, and an unowned machine is vm_not_found before the provider runs anything.
  • Exact guest arguments. Every argument is a single-quoted word of the cmux-tui argv, run as the daemon user via cmuxTuiRunCommand. Prompts and input text never become shell text.
  • Strict argument checks. Terminal ids must match term_…. Unknown tool arguments are refused, and text and prompts are capped at 16 KiB. The full guest command stays under the 64 KiB cap /api/vm/:id/exec enforces (execVm itself does not). The request body is capped at 256 KiB, and a batch at 8 messages.
  • Terminal reads are not marked read-only. They go through execVm, which resumes a paused machine and records usage, so a host should not auto-approve them as free reads. A path that refuses to resume would let them become read-only.
  • Lazy billing scope. The scope resolves on the first tool that needs it. initialize and tools/list work for a multi-team account without X-Cmux-Team-Id, and list_machines uses the same rule as GET /api/vm.
  • Errors stay in JSON-RPC. An unexpected failure becomes a -32603 reply for that request id, not a REST 500. Batches are accepted, since 2025-03-26 is one of the negotiated versions.

Auth

  • Today: the same as /api/vm. Requests carry the Stack bearer pair the app sends, or a same-origin cookie (cross-origin cookie POSTs get 403 from the existing mutation guard). A 401 carries WWW-Authenticate: Bearer.
  • Not done: OAuth. ChatGPT and Claude connectors need OAuth 2.1, which this PR does not add. /api/vm has no API keys or team tokens to reuse. Plugins: cmux in ChatGPT, and plugins in cmux #16567 proposes the OAuth and scope design, so ChatGPT cannot connect to this route yet.

Validation

  • scripts/run-tests.sh tests/cloud-mcp.test.ts tests/cloud-mcp-route.test.ts tests/vm-route-auth.test.ts: 124 pass (23 new).
    • The route test covers an unauthenticated POST getting a 401 with the bearer challenge before any tool runs, and GET getting 405.
    • Also covered: batches, a defect becoming -32603, a flag-shaped prompt staying a prompt, cleanup after a failed start, the command-size cap, an unresolvable team scope becoming a tool error, and initialize/tools/list never resolving a scope.
    • Scoping runs the real execVm/listUserVms programs against a fake repository that scopes the way accountScopeWhere does. A stranger gets vm_not_found with zero provider execs on every tool. Naming another team's id without membership is refused. A member reaches the team machine but not the owner's personal one. Listing returns only the caller's scope.
    • Argument quoting is checked by round-tripping the generated words through sh, using a prompt containing ', ;, $HOME and backticks.
  • Static checks. bun run typecheck, eslint on the new files and bun run lint:complexity are clean.
  • Live demo against a real cmux-tui daemon (built from ad7906a). The route needs Stack and Postgres, so the demo uses web/scripts/cloud-mcp-local.ts: the same handler, with one fake machine local whose guest commands run cmux-tui locally. claude there is a stub script that prints its argv, so no model was called.
    • The transcript below is from the MCP Inspector CLI (@modelcontextprotocol/inspector --cli), lightly formatted (structuredContent only), with the home path and host name replaced.
    • This establishes the protocol, the tool flow and the guest command shapes. It does not establish Stack auth or exec on a real Cloud machine.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an authenticated Cloud MCP endpoint for connecting compatible clients to your machines.
    • Cloud MCP tools can list machines and terminals, start an agent, read terminal output, and send terminal input.
    • Added a local demo server for trying Cloud MCP with a local machine.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved error responses for invalid requests and tool calls, including clear handling of unsupported methods and unauthenticated access.

POST /api/mcp speaks MCP over streamable HTTP (stateless JSON) with
list_machines, list_terminals, run_agent, read_terminal and send_input.
Machine access goes through the existing listUserVms/execVm programs, so
ownership and team scope match /api/vm; on the machine the tools call the
cmux-tui resource CLI in the cloud session. Auth is the existing Stack
bearer pair; OAuth for ChatGPT/Claude connectors is not wired yet.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ce2ed

Enforce the body limit while streaming and reject untrusted browser origins before merging. Otherwise oversized authenticated requests can consume excessive memory, and an active local demo can accept unintended terminal or agent operations. Malformed request IDs also need error replies.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ce2ed

The cloud endpoint preserves existing account and machine access checks. However, the new local demo accepts requests without authenticating callers or validating their origin, and failed agent launches do not have guaranteed cleanup. Manual startup and loopback binding limit exposure, but browser reachability and recovery behavior remain uncertain.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The newly added local listener treats loopback connectivity as sufficient authority to invoke agent and terminal operations. It accepts parsable POST bodies without authentication or Origin and Host validation. Clients that can reach the listener can dispatch those operations; a hostile browser page permitted to reach loopback could submit an agent-launch request without reading its response. Loopback binding and manual startup reduce exposure but do not authenticate the caller. Browser exploitability remains conditional, not verified.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: An agent start that takes effect but returns an invalid or failed acknowledgement can produce a tool error even if execution remains active. The subsequent workspace-close attempt is best-effort and its errors are swallowed; creation-response failures occur before the cleanup region. This creates an introduced failure-containment uncertainty for autonomous actions running with the machine account's authority. Preflight validation and run-phase cleanup mitigate ordinary failures, but provider commit semantics and external reconciliation were not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected cloud path remains bounded by the caller's authorized VM and billing scope. The local listener instead exposes the demo account's managed terminal session to clients able to reach loopback. Downstream impact depends on what those terminal programs and installed agents can access. Cloud commands use the selected daemon identity, whose existing wrapper also supports root; no universally unprivileged sandbox is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment contains no retained findings and two deferred local-listener candidates. Complete handler source now establishes the missing request-validation controls and dispatch path, but browser runtime reachability and the missing candidate-bound verification receipt remain unresolved. These candidates are not promoted to verified findings by this packet.
  • inferred — A hostile page permitted to POST to the running loopback listener could send a parsable JSON tools/call body using a safelisted content type. The handler does not reject that type or Origin, and dispatch does not require prior initialization. Launching an installed agent needs no terminal ID or readable response. Missing CORS response permission can prevent reading results, while browser local-network restrictions may prevent delivery; neither was established as a universal control here.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The cloud route uses the existing authentication wrapper, which rejects unauthenticated requests and invokes browser mutation protection before the handler. Caller identity and team membership come from authentication, while billing and plan authority come from account-scope resolution. VM access validation independently checks owner scope before provider execution. No equivalent identity boundary exists in the local demo.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inherited VM resume path includes active-slot reservation, settling checks, durable state transitions, usage recording, and best-effort pause and reservation rollback on failure. MCP reuses these mechanisms rather than adding a separate resume policy. A guest-command failure does not itself roll back a successfully resumed VM, which is existing execution behavior.
  • inferred — Create, start, and cleanup are separate authorized commands, so a scope change or provider failure between steps can prevent compensation without bypassing authorization. Sequential batch handling does not establish ordering across independent requests. Retries are explicitly non-idempotent, cancellation notifications are ignored, and durable workspace recovery or daemon serialization was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep loopback binding, but establish a separate caller boundary for the demo: validate present Origin and expected Host values and require an explicit local capability for mutating calls. Treat browser network protections as defense in depth rather than authorization.
  • proposed — Define an explicit ambiguous-launch recovery contract. Preserve workspace identity and cleanup outcome when available, distinguish confirmed failure from unknown execution state, and provide a caller-scoped recovery mechanism without introducing an authorization bypass. Continue advertising intentional non-idempotence.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

The diff adds a new cmux-tui CLI process for each machine operation. cloudMcpGatewayFor.runCmuxTui() sends every call through a separate execVm command (cloudMcpGateway.ts:63-75), and cmuxTuiRunCommand() launches "$CMUX_TUI_BIN" rather than a persistent client (cmuxTuiDaemon.ts:88-96). The tools call this path for listing, reads, input, and each workspace create/run/close step (cloudMcp.ts:252-365). The local demo also uses spawnSync for every call (cloud-mcp-local.ts:28-34). This matches the rule's prohibition on spawning a new CLI client or physical transport for each control request when the machine-owned cloud session can multiplex requests. Independent clients also provide no per-terminal input owner or ordered-input queue, so concurrent send_input calls can race.

Resolution

Use one authenticated, persistent cmux-tui control carrier per authenticated caller and machine. Multiplex list, workspace, read, and write operations over that carrier, with per-terminal ownership/ordering, cancellation, and byte routing. Keep the existing caller, team, VM-access, and fail-closed scope checks at the gateway, and discard the carrier when its auth identity changes. Apply the same persistent-client design to the local demo instead of calling spawnSync for each request.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

The production /api/mcp route returns new user-facing MCP responses. tools/list exposes the upstream agent names claude, codex, opencode, and pi in CLOUD_MCP_TOOLS (web/services/mcp/cloudMcp.ts:109-118). A failed guest command also forwards up to 2,000 characters of raw stderr or stdout in runCmuxTuiJson (web/services/mcp/cloudMcp.ts:254-259); toolFailure places that text in the MCP result, and POST returns it as JSON (web/services/mcp/cloudMcp.ts:174-179, web/app/api/mcp/route.ts:94-99). The added test confirms this behavior by requiring selector.not_found in the user-visible tool content (web/tests/cloud-mcp.test.ts:206-210). This is a concrete product API path from an authenticated MCP client to a cmux end user, not a test or developer-only surface.

Resolution

Keep raw guest and upstream details in internal logs or telemetry only. Return a generic cmux-safe tool error with an allowlisted code and recovery action, and do not copy arbitrary response message fields without the same sanitization. Remove upstream agent names from user-facing MCP metadata, or expose them only after the product explicitly configures those vendors in the UI; otherwise use product-level labels and map them internally.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR adds a normal Next.js production route and shared MCP response code, but it introduces hardcoded English user-facing API copy without a locale source. Examples include MCP tool descriptions and titles in web/services/mcp/cloudMcp.ts:82-157, initialization instructions at :428-430, and JSON-RPC/tool errors such as Request too large, Parse error, validation messages, and Internal error. The changed files have no next-intl or other locale integration, and the diff updates no message files. The prototype description does not explicitly exclude this route from production builds, so the prototype exception does not apply.

Resolution

Route all new MCP descriptions, instructions, and user-visible API/tool error messages through a locale-specific source. Add matching entries for every locale in web/i18n/routing.ts (en, ja, zh-CN, zh-TW, ko, de, es, fr, it, da, pl, ru, bs, ar, no, pt-BR, th, tr, km, and uk) in the corresponding web/messages/*.json files. Ensure each entry has a real translation, not copied English, a placeholder, or an empty value.

CI failure attribution

CI passes on ce2edafd55 (run 36947468687 attempt 1).

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's.

- Resolve billing scope lazily so initialize/tools/list work without a
  team choice; list_machines mirrors GET /api/vm's scope.
- Return JSON-RPC -32603 for unexpected failures; accept batches.
- Put `--` before agent prompts (refuse a leading `-` for pi).
- Terminal reads are not read-only: execVm resumes a paused machine.
- send_input is one write with a trailing CR; run_agent closes its
  workspace if the agent fails to start.
- Cap the body at 256 KiB and quoted guest args below the 64 KiB exec cap.
- Type Bun.serve locally in the demo script so typecheck passes.

Bugbot is paused — on-demand spend limit reached

Bugbot uses usage-based billing for this team and has hit its on-demand spend limit.

A team admin can raise the spend limit in the Cursor dashboard, or wait for the next billing cycle to continue.

cmuxTuiRunCommand repeats its arguments per layout branch, so the 64 KiB
exec cap is now checked on the whole command. Batches hold at most 8
messages, wrong-version notifications get no reply, list scope annotates
billing like GET /api/vm, and a scope that cannot resolve is tested to
surface as a tool error.

Review: two independent passes (fresh agents with no stake in the change).

Pass 1, at 4442399

Fixed in df9a7f0:

  • Typecheck failed on the demo script's Bun.serve.
  • initialize returned a REST 409 for multi-team personal accounts; scope now resolves lazily, and listing mirrors GET /api/vm.
  • A prompt shaped like a flag reached the agent as an option; -- now comes before the prompt, and pi refuses a leading -.
  • Terminal reads were marked read-only but resume paused machines.
  • Defects returned a REST 500 instead of JSON-RPC.
  • Batches were rejected even though 2025-03-26 is advertised.
  • run_agent left an empty workspace when the agent failed to start.
  • send_input could type the text and then fail on Enter.
  • Text was duplicated in both content and structuredContent.
  • The body had no size cap.
  • A route test for 401 and 405 was added.

Pass 2, at df9a7f0

Fixed in 838c9ab:

  • The size cap ignored that cmuxTuiRunCommand repeats its arguments, so it is now checked on the full command against 64 KiB.
  • Batch length was unbounded; it is now capped at 8.
  • Wrong-version notifications got a reply.
  • The list scope skipped billing annotation.
  • A test now covers an unresolvable team scope becoming a tool error.

Left:

Head: 838c9ab. run-tests.sh passes 124 tests across the new suites and vm-route-auth, and typecheck, eslint and the complexity gate are clean.

Count body bytes while the request streams in.

The content-length check passes when the header is missing, for example on a chunked request. In that case request.text() buffers the whole body before line 67 measures it. One authenticated caller can make the function hold a body of any size in memory. Read request.body with a reader, keep a running byte count, and cancel the read when the count exceeds MAX_BODY_BYTES. Based on learnings: "check that the limit is instead enforced by the streaming body parser … counting actual bytes read."

Proposed fix
-      const raw = await request.text();
-      if (Buffer.byteLength(raw, "utf8") > MAX_BODY_BYTES) return rpcFailure(-32600, "Request too large", 413);
+      const raw = await readBoundedText(request, MAX_BODY_BYTES);
+      if (raw === null) return rpcFailure(-32600, "Request too large", 413);
async function readBoundedText(request: Request, limit: number): Promise<string | null> {
  const reader = request.body?.getReader();
  if (!reader) return "";
  const chunks: Uint8Array[] = [];
  let total = 0;
  for (;;) {
    const { done, value } = await reader.read();
    if (done) break;
    total += value.byteLength;
    if (total > limit) { await reader.cancel(); return null; }
    chunks.push(value);
  }
  return Buffer.concat(chunks).toString("utf8");
}

Replace the unbounded request.text() read in the MCP request handler with a
streaming body reader that counts actual bytes and cancels as soon as the total
exceeds MAX_BODY_BYTES. Return the existing 413 “Request too large” failure when
the limit is exceeded, and preserve the current text-processing behavior for
bodies within the limit.

official MCP specification localhost Origin header validation streamable HTTP and Bun.serve Origin Host protection

💡 Result:

**Short answer:** the current MCP Streamable HTTP spec requires checking `Origin`; binding to loopback is a separate recommendation. It does **not** establish that `Bun.serve` provides MCP’s required protection automatically.

- **MCP requirement:** For Streamable HTTP, servers **MUST validate any present `Origin`** and return `403 Forbidden` if it is invalid. When running locally, they **SHOULD bind to `127.0.0.1` rather than `0.0.0.0`**. These are distinct safeguards against DNS rebinding. ([github.com](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol/blob/main/docs/specification/draft/basic/transports/streamable-http.mdx?utm_source=openai))
- **Bun:** `Bun.serve({ hostname: "127.0.0.1", ... })` can bind to loopback, but Bun’s docs don’t claim that this implements MCP Origin validation. Also, Bun’s standard `Request.headers` docs specifically caution that network-added headers such as `Host` may not appear there—so don’t assume `req.headers.get("host")` gives a reliable Host check in `Bun.serve`. ([bun.sh](https://bun.sh/reference/bun/Serve?utm_source=openai))

**Practical takeaway:** bind explicitly to `127.0.0.1` for a local server, and add an Origin allowlist check in the request path before processing MCP requests. If you also want to validate `Host`, use a Bun-supported interface that exposes it or enforce that check at a trusted proxy; the cited Bun `Request` documentation leaves access to the incoming Host unresolved. A Host check is useful local DNS-rebinding protection, but it doesn’t replace the spec’s Origin requirement. ([github.com](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol/blob/main/docs/specification/draft/basic/transports/streamable-http.mdx?utm_source=openai))

MDN CORS simple request text/plain no preflight Private Network Access loopback preflight

💡 Result:

`Content-Type: text/plain` can make a cross-origin `POST` a **CORS-safelisted (“simple”) request**, so ordinary CORS does not require a preflight—assuming the method, headers, and other request conditions are also safelisted. The server still needs to allow the origin for JavaScript to read the response. ([developer.mozilla.org](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/CORS-safelisted_request_header?utm_source=openai))

**Private Network Access (PNA) is a separate reason a preflight might occur.** The PNA proposal described preflights for requests to more-private address spaces—including loopback—even when the request was otherwise simple. But Chrome’s October 9, 2024 update said PNA preflight enforcement was on hold and was not then enforced. ([developer.chrome.com](https://developer.chrome.com/blog/private-network-access-preflight?hl=en&utm_source=openai))

So: **`text/plain` avoids a regular CORS preflight; it does not, by itself, rule out a network-access-related preflight or other local-network restrictions.** The sources establish the proposal and Chrome’s 2024 status, but don’t establish enforcement status in every browser/version as of October 2026.

Reject untrusted origins before parsing MCP requests.

The loopback bind does not validate Origin. A browser can send a CORS-simple text/plain POST without a normal preflight, and request.json() still parses the JSON body. The request reaches tools/call, including run_agent, which creates a workspace and starts an agent through cmux-tui. Missing CORS response headers do not prevent this side effect. Private Network Access may add a preflight in some browser configurations, but it is not an application Origin check or a reliable substitute for the MCP requirement.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return -32600 for a request with an invalid id type.

hasId accepts only a string or a number. A request such as {"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":{},"method":"tools/call"} takes the notification path and returns null, so the route answers HTTP 202. The client sent a request with an id but gets no reply. Its pending call then hangs until it times out. A request with id present and of an invalid type must get a -32600 error with id: null.

Proposed fix
   const hasId = typeof id === "string" || typeof id === "number";
+  if ("id" in request && id !== undefined && !hasId && id !== null) {
+    return rpcError(null, -32600, "Invalid request id.");

Update the request ID handling in the `cloudMcp` request-validation flow: when a
