With history.enabled = false, mise doctor left out the dotfiles: section entirely, so the repo: and origin: lines added in #14173 never appeared. Now doctor shows a short section when anything is tracked, the history repo exists, or a setup repository is connected:

dotfiles:
1 tracked entry, history disabled (history.enabled = false): nothing is saved or synced
  repo: ~/.local/state/mise/history/repo.git
origin: file://~/workdir/origin.git (branch main, sync manual)

When history is disabled, doctor reads only the declared tracking and never opens or creates the history store. It skips watcher, capture and sync health checks, since none of them run while history is off. If the tracking declaration cannot be read, for example an encrypted entry with an empty [history.encryption].recipients, the section reports that error instead of counting zero entries. If nothing is tracked, no history exists and no setup repository is connected, there is still no section.

mise doctor --json adds dotfiles.history_enabled and dotfiles.tracking_error. When history_enabled is false, watcher and notifications are "disabled".

Fixes #14241

Testing

The new e2e test test_doctor_dotfiles_history_disabled covers the enabled and disabled text output, the JSON fields, an unreadable tracking declaration, and an empty state that shows no section. test_dotfiles_watch_cache and test_dotfiles_sync_stable still pass, and clippy with -D warnings is clean.

Note

Low Risk
Diagnostic-only changes to doctor output when history is disabled; no capture, sync, or store behavior changes.

Overview
mise doctor no longer drops the dotfiles: section when history.enabled is false. It still reports tracked entry count, local history repo, and connected origin (branch/sync), with copy that history is off so nothing is saved or synced.

When history is disabled, diagnosis reads declared tracking from config only and does not open or create the history store; watcher, capture, and sync health lines are omitted. Unreadable tracking config (e.g. encrypted paths with empty [history.encryption].recipients) surfaces as tracking_error instead of implying zero tracks. The section stays hidden only when nothing is tracked, no history repo exists, and no setup origin is configured.

mise doctor --json adds dotfiles.history_enabled and dotfiles.tracking_error; with history off, watcher and notifications are "disabled". An e2e test covers enabled vs disabled output, JSON, bad declarations, and the empty case.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • mise doctor now reports dotfiles tracking, repository, and origin details when history is disabled.
    • The report identifies unreadable tracking declarations and indicates when history-related monitoring is disabled.
    • Dotfiles details are omitted when there is no tracking, history, repository, or origin to report.

With history.enabled = false, mise doctor skipped the dotfiles section
entirely, so the repo and origin lines added in #14173 never appeared.
It now reports the tracked entries, repo path and setup repository,
noting that nothing is saved or synced, without opening the store.

Walkthrough

mise doctor now reports tracked dotfiles and repository or origin details when history is disabled. The text output identifies disabled history and reports unreadable tracking declarations. End-to-end tests cover text and JSON output, including cases with no dotfiles setup and unreadable tracking.

mise doctor now shows dotfiles tracking and repository details when history is disabled, and it reports unreadable tracking declarations instead of hiding them. No remaining merge risk is apparent.

A tracking declaration that fails to load, such as an encrypted entry
with empty [history.encryption].recipients, was counted as zero entries
and could hide the dotfiles section. Report the error instead.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

8936925ee64e vs 459167d20e69 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
