fix(cargo): lock the same rust homes the rust plugin resolves - #14219
Conversation
lock_rust_state_for_config resolved homes from CARGO_HOME/RUSTUP_HOME in the child environment only. The rust plugin resolves the same homes from more sources, so the lock jdx#14042 added missed the homes the plugin works on whenever a user configures them through: - settings rust.cargo_home / rust.rustup_home (documented as the way to keep mise toolchains apart from another rustup installation) - MISE_CARGO_HOME / MISE_RUSTUP_HOME from [env] In those setups the plugin and the cargo install fallback take different lock files, so concurrent source builds can still corrupt the shared rustup state (jdx#14041). Resolve the homes with the same RustHomes::from_sources tiering the plugin applies: [env]-style overrides, then settings, then the ambient process environment. Cover each source with a test that holds the cargo-fallback lock and probes the plugin-resolved lock. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>

Replace the fixed ~/mise-lock-probe-* paths with unique tempdirs created under dirs::HOME, deriving the tilde paths from their names. The test harness pins HOME to the repo test dir so collisions were unlikely, but the old unconditional remove_dir_all could still delete a pre-existing directory; TempDir now owns cleanup instead. When `install_env` removes or changes CARGO_HOME/RUSTUP_HOME, or a `rust.*_home` setting never reaches the spawned cargo, the rust plugin and the child use different homes. Lock the union of both, in sorted order, so the fallback is serialized against the plugin and against any other process using the child's effective homes. The toolset env also carries other tools' exec env, which the rust plugin never sees: `RustHomes::resolve` reads `config.env()`. A tool exporting CARGO_HOME made the lock pick that home in place of the settings home the plugin actually locks. Pass the config env through and share one resolver with the plugin. Problem
#14042 made the cargo backend take the rust-state lock before
cargo installfallbacks. But it resolved which homes to lock fromCARGO_HOME/RUSTUP_HOMEin the child environment only, while the rust plugin resolves the same homes from more sources. When a user configures homes through either of these, the two take different lock files and the race #14041 described is still live:rust.cargo_home/rust.rustup_home—settings.tomldocuments these as the way to "keep mise's toolchains apart from another rustup installation" (env aliasMISE_CARGO_HOME/MISE_RUSTUP_HOME)MISE_CARGO_HOME/MISE_RUSTUP_HOMEset in[env]The failure is silent: nothing errors, the lock just doesn't cover the plugin's homes.
Example
.config/mise/settings.toml:Two parallel installs that both fall back to source builds: the plugin locks
~/.mise-rust/~/.mise-rustupwhile the cargo backend locks the default~/.cargo/~/.rustup— different locks, both installs may run rustup on the shared state at once, and the install fails withcould not rename 'component' ... Directory not empty (os error 39)like #14041. Before this change the lock only protected users who set plainCARGO_HOME/RUSTUP_HOME; after, the same lock covers the settings- and[env]-configured homes too.Fix
Lock the union of two sets of homes, in sorted order:
RustHomes::from_config_env, the resolverRustHomes::resolveuses.config.env()forms the config tier,rust.cargo_home/rust.rustup_homesettings are the configured tier, and the process env is the ambient tier. Other tools' exec env is excluded because the plugin never sees it.cargouses: the process env, overridden by the toolset env and then byinstall_env, including removals. The two differ when
install_envremoves or changes a home, or when a settings home never reaches the child. Both go through the same normalization (resolve_rust_home), so tilde and relative paths resolve the same way on both sides.Tests
Each test holds the cargo-fallback lock, then probes the expected locks with
LockFile::try_lock:MISE_*_HOMEfrom[env](fails on the fix(cargo): serialize rustup state across cargo install fallbacks #14042 code)install_envremoves: covers both the plugin's settings home and the child's default homeinstall_envremovesCARGO_HOMEexported by another tool alongside a settings home: covers bothFixes #14041 (gap follow-up to #14042)
