Two docs clarifications, plus a consistency pass on how mise tells people to set a setting.

auto_update and minimum_release_age. Auto-updates already honor minimum_release_age (default 24h for most backends), but the docs didn't say so. A release becomes eligible 24 hours after publishing, and mise only notices it at the next check (tool_update.check_duration, also 24h by default). For a tool launched at least once per interval, an update can land 24 to 48 hours after a release. The "Automatic tool updates" section now explains this and shows how to wait longer for one tool:

[tools]
node = { version = "24", auto_update = "6h", minimum_release_age = "3d" }

mise settings KEY=VALUE. Docs, settings.toml descriptions and runtime hint messages (the upgrade prune hint, the node flavor and mirror hints, the python precompiled hint) told users to run mise settings set KEY VALUE. They now use the shorter mise settings KEY=VALUE, which mise settings already accepts:

mise settings self_update.auto=true
mise settings --local jobs=2

The mise settings set subcommand itself, its own help and its tests are unchanged, and release notes are left as written.

Docs and message text only. I ran mise run render (clean apart from the regenerated llms.txt, which is committed) and prettier --check, and checked mise settings --local jobs=2 and mise settings disable_backends=asdf,vfox write the expected TOML. I updated the test_upgrade_prune_hint e2e assertion for the new hint text but did not run it.

Note

Low Risk
Docs and hint-string changes only; no behavior change to settings parsing or the mise settings set subcommand.

Overview
Documentation and user-facing messages now recommend mise settings KEY=VALUE (and mise settings --local KEY=VALUE) instead of mise settings set, across configuration guides, settings.toml help text, llms.txt, and runtime hints (upgrade auto-prune, Node flavor/mirror, Python precompiled). The mise settings set subcommand is unchanged.

The automatic tool updates section adds a tip that minimum_release_age (default 24h) plus the check interval can delay visible updates by 24–48h, with a minimum_release_age per-tool example. The upgrade-prune e2e assertion matches the new hint wording.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated settings instructions and examples to use the direct mise settings key=value syntax.
    • Clarified that minimum release age delays automatic tool updates until a release meets the configured age. With the default 24-hour setting, updates may arrive 24–48 hours after release when the tool is launched regularly, or later otherwise.
    • Added an example configuring a three-day release-age cutoff for Node.

With the defaults an auto_update can land 24 to 48 hours after a release:
the cutoff makes it eligible after 24h and the check interval adds up to
another 24h. Document that and how to wait longer per tool.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

82979143ca0e vs 00ac7b612534 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
