What changes

Whole-forward FPM measurements can drive onboarding, prediction, recommendation and replay without an analytical model class. A complete fpm_profile supplies the exact model/runtime/topology/precision identity and rank-local resource bounds. Rust constructs the estimator through the canonical ForwardPassPerfModel::best_available(ForwardPassPerfModelConfig) interface; Python transports the same configuration and keeps schema/supervisor imports lightweight.

Runtime construction verifies the profile architecture against checkpoint config.json at the declared remote revision or local checkpoint. Missing, malformed or mismatched architecture metadata fails before estimator selection. A verified architecture without a registered analytical model remains valid for direct interpolation, without weights or graph construction. Nested estimator_config.fpm_interpolation.method: auto selects SOL for registered architectures and direct for verified unregistered architectures with a profile. Explicit direct also supports registered architectures. Top-level estimator selection keeps its existing priority; invalid configuration and query coverage failures never silently change the selected method.

Profile onboarding explicitly generates:

estimation_mode: fpm_interpolation
fallback_policy: deny
estimator_config:
  fpm_interpolation:
    method: direct

Direct prefill selects the nearest same-batch lower and upper KV curves that both cover the requested new-token count, with no KV distance limit. It excludes synthetic fake_fallback rows and unsupported extrapolation. Readiness requires genuine rows for each operation's phase and continues to a later usable data root when necessary. Timing and profile-based memory admission require neither an operation graph nor per-operation silicon data.

Profile collection enforces the declared prefill and decode resource bounds before launching workers. Profiles have explicit precision identity and reject text_only and unrecorded_quant_modes overrides; non-profile support remains available. Direct compilation also rejects incompatible operation-level controls and contradictory interpolation choices before returning.

Saved estimator controls merge with explicit legacy options before defaults apply: disjoint settings and agreeing overlaps survive, while contradictions identify the conflicting setting. Historical pickles retain their saved controls, and equivalent parquet paths remain compatible.

The returned model adds estimate_forward_pass_detailed(metrics), exposing exact, within-curve, cross-KV and cross-batch lookup support with measured coordinates, latencies and weights. Results separately explain mixed-pass baseline subtraction/clamping, rank maximum and online correction. Opt-in evidence reaches prediction (--detail source or --detail time, inspect JSON output), replay and recommendation through the existing diagnostics request. Scalar APIs, public four-element operation tuples and the meaning of Source::Silicon remain unchanged. Ordinary replay retains no query history; requested capture counts repeated coordinates and retains all distinct queries.

Profile collection checks exact topology, precision and full observed runtime version through Kubernetes/Slurm preparation. Literal version equality includes local/development suffixes. A mismatch preserves observed provenance and explains recovery: use the pinned runtime, or create a new profile pinned to the observed full version and regenerate its collection plan in a new output directory.

Scope and compatibility

  • Initial collection scope is vLLM text-decoder TP/DEP/TEP, PP1/CP1 and linear KV storage. feat: add FPM self-service onboarding and validation #248 extends config derivation, grouped caches and observed-memory finalization.
  • Based on main after feat: onboard models for FPM simulation on target hardware #196 merged at 7e2f3024bf394c2c0effc0f57a5f7b1b170181c9, including merged feat: load DCP self-benchmark profiles #284 and the updated runtime. External Parquet loading, FMHA/backend selectors and execution identity fields are preserved; historical 0.25.1 timing pairs remain external validation inputs.
  • Combined EngineSpec format is 25, incorporating incoming format 24 and the decoupling branch's positional layout. Regenerate older binary EngineSpecs; incompatible versions are rejected before payload decoding.
  • Normalized profiles, explicit controls, data roots and provenance survive exported configuration and recommendation roundtrips. FPM timing evidence does not imply power evidence; FPM power remains unavailable.
  • This integration preserves the incoming measured data and frozen goldens without refreshing them. Numerical accuracy fixes, gates and graph-aware partitioning are deferred until new measurements with Dynamo #15110 provenance. If a reproducible graph boundary causes the discrepancy, interpolation must respect it.

Validation

The conflict refresh is validated at 27f3f279642a95cdbf94fab20076ad804a571893, including all maintainer changes through c1645652ee14a5b24a58b8ff9eef132494df076f, against the merged #196/#284 foundation on main. Tests use the integrated Python sources and a freshly built native extension. Final head b946545a2f12bd052c7282714f9d13ef19c36391 only updates two positional-constructor test expectations to include the new keyword-only fpm_profile=None default; all 85 tests in that file pass, and runtime source/native files are unchanged.

  • Final configuration, FPM, migration and public API checks: 954 passed. Prediction, recommendation, query-evidence and related workflow checks: 278 passed. An initial sandbox-limited attempt could not inspect subprocesses; both complete suites passed after normal execution permissions were restored, without changing the product or suppressing tests.
  • Final native checks: 116 Rust FPM tests and the new embedded legacy-compilation regression passed. Independent review of the final reconciliation separately passed 396 Python tests, including 27 review probes, and 28 Rust migration, embedded-compilation and schema tests, with no remaining findings.
  • The initial integration at 020e4bb7 passed both required parity suites (386 tests), the Rust library (1,785 passed, 1 existing ignored) and the standalone public API crate (12 passed). Subsequent reconciliation preserved the protected numerical code, table readers, positional layout, parity fixtures and systems data; final review verified their equivalence to the previously reviewed integration. Incoming measured data and frozen goldens were not refreshed.
  • Ruff, Python/Rust formatting, whitespace, documentation destinations and CODEOWNERS checks passed during integration; final changed-source formatting and whitespace checks also passed.

The merge preserves incoming typed DCP, precision/backend controls, recursive regression settings and first-token behavior. Unsupported DCP/profile combinations reject explicitly. Profile-only compilation validates controls before its early return, sparse saved defaults do not become invalid nulls, and qualified graph-prefill models keep their restricted API surface.

Historical real-data interpolation evaluation included a worst GLM holdout error of 141.54%; this refresh establishes code compatibility rather than a new accuracy result. No GPU collection or runtime memory qualification was performed. Hosted CI and applicable human review remain separate merge requirements.

ai-dynamo/dynamo — PR branch b10282010f0233aa3644eea743e67a0e773978aa

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate-core and the staged aisimulate wheel to exactly 0.12.0; the new profile/direct-interpolation and detailed-evidence APIs require coordinated release and dependency-pin updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Replay integration consumes AISimulate’s ReplayOutputRequirements and related replay contracts, making it the primary downstream boundary for validating the new FPM evidence propagation. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing planner integration calls best_available and tune_with_fpms; these established compatibility surfaces remain relevant consumers. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator — main, ref f254959eb89e2f206b8f9a77051644d7c1cbdb89

  • The legacy compatibility core remains version 0.12.0 and documents migration to AISimulate. The new AISimulate APIs are not present in its compatibility API. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Its EngineSpec schema is version 15, unlike this PR’s version 25; the formats must not be treated as wire-compatible. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

📝 Summary

Risk level: High. The three areas that need the most human attention are: (1) profile identity and resource-bound validation across collection, compilation, and memory admission; (2) direct interpolation coverage, readiness, and failure behavior; and (3) FPM evidence capture and propagation through replay, prediction, and recommendation.

Behavior and public contracts

  • FPM profiles let workflows use declared model, runtime, topology, precision, and resource bounds without an analytical model class. Rust resolves the estimator through ForwardPassPerfModel::best_available. Python profile and quantization metadata can load without eagerly importing native runtime modules.
  • Profile validation checks checkpoint architecture and deployment identity before estimator selection. auto selects SOL for registered architectures and direct interpolation for verified unregistered architectures. Explicit direct interpolation also supports registered architectures. Direct interpolation requires SILICON mode and genuine phase-specific measurements. Unsupported query coverage fails without switching methods.
  • Detailed estimates expose rank-level latency components, correction factors, query coordinates, and measurement support. Evidence can flow into diagnostics, replay, prediction, and recommendation. Ordinary replay does not retain query history. Existing scalar APIs and public four-element operation tuples remain unchanged.
  • Profile-based memory estimation and collection admission use declared resource bounds without requiring an operation graph or per-operation silicon data. Kubernetes and Slurm collection validate the observed runtime version against the profile.
  • The raw change summary reports ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION changing from 24 to 25 and rejection of older serialized EngineSpecs. The PR objectives say the combined EngineSpec format remains 21. This version conflict is unresolved; confirm which format each statement describes.
  • FPM timing evidence does not establish power evidence. FPM power remains unavailable.

Evidence and readiness

  • The PR objectives report 386 parity checks, 1,734 Rust workspace tests, 1,795 Python-embedded/replay tests, 8 public-API tests, 102 package integration tests, 2 recommendation CLI smoke tests, and 171 cross-package/import-contract tests. These results are reported, not independently verified here.
  • No current review findings or severity counts were supplied. Review counts are unavailable. The reported independent review approval does not establish merge readiness.
  • No new GPU collection or runtime memory qualification was performed. Hosted Full CI and human reviews remain required. Historical interpolation evaluation reported a worst GLM holdout error of 141.54%; this is not a general accuracy guarantee or a new measurement.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds FPM model profiles, direct interpolation from measured timing curves, profile-aware resource planning and collection, and detailed FPM query evidence in diagnostics. It also updates public APIs, schema versioning, compatibility imports, validation, tests, and documentation.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

The EngineSpec schema version is not fully synchronized with its documentation. The PR changes ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION to 25 in crates/core/src/perfmodel/config.rs, and python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate_core/sdk/engine.py also documents schema 25. However, unchanged current documentation still states schema 24 in docs/deepseek-v41-storage.md:69 and docs/deepseek-v41.md:97,135-136. The Rust decoder now rejects schema 24, so those documented compatibility boundaries are false. The wheel/crate manifests remain one wheel plus one crate, and no new Dynamo dependency is present.

Resolution

Update the schema references in docs/deepseek-v41-storage.md, docs/deepseek-v41.md, and current-schema comments such as crates/core/src/perfmodel/operators/attention.rs to describe schema 25 and its interpolation-selector change. Add a synchronization check that compares current schema documentation with ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION so future wire-version bumps update all documented boundaries.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The complete PR description is available and reports results, boundary failures, local native-extension testing, parity suites, and the explicit absence of GPU/runtime qualification. It also states that hosted CI remains a separate merge requirement, so it does not cite inactive nested workflows as hosted CI evidence. However, it does not name the concrete test commands, and it does not classify any fake-runner or mocked-runner evidence; fake_fallback refers to data rows, not runner evidence. The required evidence distinction is therefore incomplete.

Resolution

Add exact validation commands with their results. Explicitly label local runs, fake-runner or mocked-runner tests, parity tests, and production or hosted-CI evidence. Keep the current statement that hosted CI and human review remain separate requirements, and do not present reusable nested workflows as hosted CI results.

Inline comments:
Review comments at @crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/estimator.rs:
- Around line 474-487: Update explicit_fields to check normalized.get(key)
before recursing; when a supplied key is absent from normalized because
serialization skipped its default value, retain the caller-supplied value
instead of substituting null. Add a migration test covering explicit text_only
false and an empty unrecorded_quant_modes list.

Review comments at @crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/model.rs:
- Around line 474-492: Add an initial require_general_forward_api() check to
estimate_forward_pass_detailed and static_prefill_detailed so graph-profile
models reject these unqualified APIs; add a test confirming
estimate_forward_pass_detailed rejects a graph-profile model.

Review comments at @crates/core/src/perfmodel/py.rs:
- Around line 1792-1799: In compile_engine_to_engine, update the assignment to
request.fpm_interpolation so migrate_legacy_inputs results in
FpmInterpolationMethod::Auto remain unset, while resolved methods are forwarded
unchanged. Add a test confirming an estimator_config without an interpolation
method compiles with no profile.

Review comments at @python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate_core/sdk/engine.py:
- Around line 570-583: In the direct FPM profile branch, reject non-default
`fpm_options` controls before returning the spec, since that path bypasses
`FpmCompileConfig` validation and silently drops them. Allow `fpm_parquet_path`
and default-valued options; raise `InvalidEngineConfigurationError` for
unsupported non-default settings such as `text_only` or
`unrecorded_quant_modes`.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo — PR branch b10282010f0233aa3644eea743e67a0e773978aa

  • Dynamo pins both Python and Rust AISimulate artifacts to 0.12.0 in pyproject.toml:17, Cargo.toml:59, container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:5, and lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml:63. The reviewed schema/API changes require synchronized artifact release and pin updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Planner code directly calls RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available and tune_with_fpms in components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/engine_query.py:211-235; these existing call forms must remain compatible. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo’s FPM telemetry contract remains version 1 in components/src/dynamo/common/forward_pass_metrics.py:45,167,204-220; the new FPM query-evidence structures are not part of this existing wire payload. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Release consistency is enforced by tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_consistency.py and tests/dependencies/test_aiconfigurator_consistency.py, including exact package versions and shared RustForwardPassPerfModel identities. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator — main, ref f254959eb89e2f206b8f9a77051644d7c1cbdb89

  • The frozen compatibility package is version 0.12.0 (pyproject.toml:6,43) and uses ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION == 15 (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:72, aic-core/rust/tests/public-api/src/lib.rs:85). It will reject EngineSpecs emitted with the reviewed v25 schema in aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/engine/spec.rs:125-129. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • aic-core/API.md:246 explicitly treats EngineConfig, EngineSpec, and ForwardPassMetrics wire changes as breaking changes requiring coordinated version updates. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Existing compatibility APIs remain best_available and tune_with_fpms in aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/rust_engine_step.py:167-234, matching Dynamo’s current consumers. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

1154-1168: 🚀 Performance & Scalability

SGLang profiles are rejected by the profile schema.

FpmDeploymentProfile.backend is restricted to Literal["vllm"]. A profile with backend="sglang" cannot pass schema validation, so the reported activation double-counting path is not reachable through an accepted profile.

429-431: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The concern is refuted. The local expression skips only the legacy product check. validate_forward_pass_profile calls FpmModelProfile.select, which requires an exact match for system, backend, version, and (tp, pp, attention_dp, moe_tp, moe_ep, cp). A mismatched MoE layout raises before best_available returns a model, so it cannot reach replay through this path.

ai-dynamo/dynamo — PR branch b10282010f0233aa3644eea743e67a0e773978aa

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate-core to exactly 0.12.0 in Cargo.toml:59 and the staged Python wheel to aisimulate==0.12.0 in container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:4-5. The new profile/direct-interpolation and detailed-evidence APIs therefore require coordinated AISimulate release and dependency-pin updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo’s simulation/replay integration imports AISimulate Sweeper and replay contracts, including ReplayOutputRequirements, in components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:20-25,94-102; its integration tests exercise the same boundary in components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/test_simulation_integration.py:19-25. These are relevant consumers for validating the PR’s new replay evidence propagation. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing planner performance-model integration still calls best_available and tune_with_fpms through components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/aic_adapter.py:137-165; compatibility tests mock that established surface in components/src/dynamo/planner/tests/unit/test_engine_query.py:91-116. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator — main, ref f254959eb89e2f206b8f9a77051644d7c1cbdb89

  • The compatibility core remains version 0.12.0 and explicitly states that active development moved to AISimulate in aic-core/pyproject.toml:6-10. Its migration guide requires stable aisimulate==0.12.0 artifacts before migration in docs/aisimulate_migration.md:9-18. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Its compatibility EngineSpec schema is still version 15 in aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:72, with matching public/API tests in aic-core/rust/tests/public-api/src/lib.rs:62-85 and tests/unit/sdk/database/test_attention_lanes.py:246-250. The PR’s AISimulate schema version 25 must not be treated as wire-compatible with this legacy distribution. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The compatibility API documents RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available(...) and tune_with_fpms(...) as its supported adaptive-model surface in aic-core/API.md:150-205; no detailed forward-pass evidence method is present in this compatibility API. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Brings in the FPM decoupling / self-service onboarding stack (ai-dynamo#238, ai-dynamo#248,
ai-dynamo#347), the output adapters (ai-dynamo#334) and the CI changes (ai-dynamo#349, ai-dynamo#351, ai-dynamo#353,
ai-dynamo#354, ai-dynamo#330, ai-dynamo#319).

Conflict resolutions:

- ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION: upstream claimed 25 for the FPM decoupling
selector; decode CP is renumbered to 26 (positional dcp_size tails on the
  attention / MLA / DSA ops). Stale-payload loops reject 20..25; the 25
payload keeps the selector like the decoupling branch's 21.
- cp_size: upstream added a CP1-only `cp_size` to compile_engine,
  estimate_kv_cache / estimate_num_gpu_blocks, EngineBuildRequest and the
legacy Rust compile path ("this SDK entry point does not support context
parallelism"). This branch supports prefill CP at exactly those entry
points, so the duplicate parameters / struct field are folded into ours,
the CP1 gates become positive-integer validation, and the FPM profile cell
selection receives the real cp_size (a profile without that cell fails
loud with "no matching FPM deployment profile"). Upstream's tests are
  adjusted accordingly.
- FpmCompileConfig / AicTimingConfig parallel-shape checks combine
  upstream's `fpm_profile.is_none()` exemption with the `* cp_size` fold;
  aic_capacity_kwargs gains cp_size / dcp_size; fpm best_available keeps
upstream's registered-architecture check ahead of the DCP mode gate.
- capacity.py worker resolution carries aic_cp_size / aic_dcp_size next to
  aic_fpm_profile / worker_type.
- ParallelismPresetConfig.prefill_context becomes Optional (None = 1), like
decode_context, so default parallelism dumps carry no CP keys; the new
onboarding topology tests (ai-dynamo#248) compare those dumps against the
six-key request parallelism. Consumers read it through compiler._prefill_cp.
