Summary

Op-level modeling of decode context parallelism (vLLM -dcp, SGLang --dcp-size) and prefill context parallelism (vLLM -pcp, SGLang --attn-cp-size) as two independent knobs, from ModelConfig through the compiled engine identity, KV-capacity estimation, the topology rules, the unified CLI and the deployment generator.

This PR sits on top of #284, which added the recorded-DCP FPM cell identity and the canonical dcp estimator field for self-benchmarked whole-forward profiles. The two are complementary and share one configuration:

#284 (merged) this PR
decode step time under DCP measured whole-forward cell per (model, system, tp, dcp); forward_model="fpm", vLLM op-level pricing from the existing op tables for every model class that declares supports_dcp; forward_model="op_level", vLLM and SGLang
KV capacity / transfer bytes under DCP explicit num_gpu_blocks and bytes_per_token required estimated: per-rank KV is the 1/dcp stripe, transfer bytes are unchanged by striping
prefill CP — cp_size / prefill_context end to end
topology rules tp % dcp == 0 agg PCP/DCP exclusivity, disaggregated prefill-worker rules, vLLM NIXL pairing, GQA kv-head bound, DSA backend gate
deployment generator — renders the launch flags with version floors and GPU accounting

get_model dispatches on the forward model: fpm with dcp > 1 needs vLLM and uses the recorded cell (no op rewrite); op_level with dcp > 1 needs the class's supports_dcp and runs the rewrite below.

Configuration and identity

  • ModelConfig.dcp_size: int | None (keyword-only). None means not requested: priced as 1 and kept on the unrecorded-DCP FPM identity; an explicit 1 selects recorded-DCP1 cells (the feat: load DCP self-benchmark profiles #284 tri-state). ModelConfig.cp_size is prefill CP and folds into attn_width = tp × dp × cp; dcp_size never widens the worker. Both validated once per entry point (validate_parallel_size, tp % dcp == 0).
  • Canonical estimator config carries dcp (feat: load DCP self-benchmark profiles #284) and cp_size; the compiled ParallelMapping / EngineConfig carry cp_size and dcp_size, so cp/dcp variants never share a compiled handle; the engine cache key also carries dcp_comm / dcp_q_replicate, which compile different op graphs for one (tp, dcp). ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION 18 → 26 (19–25 were taken by concurrent changes while this PR was open, most recently the FPM decoupling selector at 25).
  • Unified CLI: parallelism.prefill_context / parallelism.decode_context (prediction only). Spelled out only when set, so pre-CP deployments, engine args and estimator identities stay byte-identical. recommend rejects values above 1 instead of sweeping them.
  • SDK Task: per-role dcp_size / prefill_dcp_size / decode_dcp_size; sweeper candidates may carry cp / dcp columns; the runner cross-checks aic_cp_size / dcp against parallel_config.

Pricing

Every decode attention op (GenerationAttention, GenerationMLA, WideEPGenerationMLA, DsaModule, MLAModule) and context op gains a tail-appended dcp_size. One geometry everywhere: the kernel prices n_local × dcp gathered query heads over a ceil(kv / dcp) KV stripe (dcp_geometry), sliding windows occupy ceil(w / dcp) stripe positions, and the FPM SOL leaves apply the same geometry.

BaseModel._apply_decode_context_parallel rewrites generation_ops once for every class (recursing into FallbackOp / OverlapOp interiors) and appends the per-layer collectives, sized by the tensors and keyed to the NCCL table by whole buffer:

  • query all-gather (dtype follows fmha_quant_mode: fp8 attention gathers an fp8 query);
  • ag_rs (vLLM default): fp32 LSE all-gather, correct_attn_out elementwise, output reduce-scatter; a2a / fi_a2a (SGLang default): pack, packed all-to-all, unpack/combine;
  • DSA: indexer top-k candidate merge (pack, all-gather of dcp × topk × (score, id), stable top-k) and the sparse attention over the rank's ceil(topk / dcp) owned slots (SOL leaf; the module tables are measured at the whole top-k and are apportioned with the analytic ratio);
  • dcp_q_replicate (vLLM dcp_q_replicate, SGLang --dcp-replicate-q-proj): drops the query gather and scales the Q-side ops (q_b projection, absorb BMM) by dcp; on by default for Kimi-K3 on SGLang under a2a.

Aggregated serving on the same engine: a prefill that reuses cached context first all-gathers the other ranks' KV stripes (dcp_context_gather, batch × prefix cached tokens, plus the indexer-K cache for DSA), added after the zigzag imbalance scaling. Per-rank persistent KV divides by dcp (_cp_kv_memory_divisor), so estimate_kv_cache / num_gpu_blocks scale with the stripe.

Enabled model classes: DeepSeek-class MLA (vLLM, SGLang), DeepSeek-V3.2 / GLM-5.x DSA (vLLM; FlashMLA sparse requires ag_rs + fp8 KV, attention_backend="flashinfer" lifts it), dense GQA and GQA-MoE (vLLM, dcp <= tp / kv_heads), Kimi-K3 (SGLang; MLA layers striped, KDA layers untouched, and the rank-local KDA state is reserved whole before the stripe in the KV-capacity inverse, get_kvcache_rank_*). Others fail loud, matching the frameworks.

Topology rules

  • Aggregated workers accept at most one of prefill CP / decode CP above 1 (compiler and Task.iter_parallel("agg")): SGLang's prefill-CP and DCP paths never compose; vLLM composes them only for sparse MLA.
  • Disaggregated: a prefill worker accepts decode_context only as 1 or equal to its prefill_context (a prefill engine stripes its KV only to match a PCP+DCP layout). On vLLM, a replicated-PCP prefill cannot pair with a DCP-sharded decode and the two DCP sizes must divide one another (NIXL _validate_remote_parallel_config). SGLang re-lays the KV out per decode DCP rank on the prefill side and has no pairing rule.
  • AFD companions reject both knobs; get_model keeps only capability checks, never deployment policy.

Generator

aisimulate predict / generate render both knobs so a CP-evaluated topology cannot degrade into an un-CP'd launch. generator/context_parallel.py is the single decision point for both request paths: vLLM -pcp / -dcp ≥ 0.14.1 (first template that renders them), --dcp-comm-backend ≥ 0.19.0 (the first template that renders it; the flag exists upstream from 0.18.0 but 0.18.x floor-matches the 0.16.0 template); SGLang --enable-prefill-cp --attn-cp-size --cp-strategy / --dcp-size ≥ 0.5.15, --dcp-comm-backend ≥ 0.5.17; --cp-strategy interleave for DSA architectures; TRT-LLM rejected (Helix is a different layout). Rules: SGLang folds prefill-CP ranks into --tp for dense models (MoE already moe_tp × moe_ep), vLLM's -pcp expands the world size and the MoE fold divides by dp × cp; decode CP adds no GPUs on either.

Validation

  • Rust: 1803 passed (DCP geometry, striped sliding window, per-rank top-k, AIC topology, schema round trip). Python unit 6366, root 3057, golden parity 386 passed; no golden files changed.
  • B200 measurements (DeepSeek-V3, vLLM 0.24.0, tp8, dcp 1/2/4/8): KV capacity 1.98× / 3.96× / 7.85×, attention geometry ratios 0.87–1.04 at dcp=4, 128k decode step 30.4 → 17.0 ms at dcp=8, the 32k dcp=8 > dcp=4 non-monotonicity reproduced. DCP collectives within ±10 % of nsys after the whole-buffer NCCL keying fix; the DSA indexer gather and num_heads=32 kernel behaviour confirmed from source and microbenchmarks. Out of scope and reported separately: the memory model's weight / activation baseline (10–12 % low), MoE decode time, the B200 NCCL 2.27.3 table outlier.

Known approximations

  • Elementwise passes (LSE correction, a2a pack/unpack, top-k merge) are roofline-priced without a launch floor; launch-bound overheads and the CUDA-graph surcharge per collective are not modeled.
  • The DSA top-k stripe enters the module-table path as an analytic ratio, not a measurement.
  • Under DCP the attention tables are queried at (heads × dcp, s / dcp); MLA tables usually have the row, GQA may not and then fails loud.
  • Collector-side DCP cells for the op-level tables are a separate, approved-scope change.

Risk: High.

Focus review on:

  1. DCP graph rewrites and collective selection.
  2. KV-cache accounting and topology validation.
  3. Backend/version gates and generated deployment arguments.

Changed behavior and contracts

  • Adds dcp_size beside cp_size.
  • Advances the engine schema from 18 to 19.
  • Propagates DCP through configuration, engine identity, compilation, bindings, pricing, and KV-cache APIs.
  • DCP stripes decode KV cache across existing attention ranks without adding GPUs.
  • Aggregated workers reject both CP knobs above 1. Disaggregated roles may configure them independently.
  • Unsupported model and backend combinations fail capability checks.
  • FPM rejects dcp_size > 1 because DCP measurement cells are unavailable.
  • vLLM and SGLang generators emit version-gated CP/DCP options. TRT-LLM configurations are rejected.
  • Missing serialized DCP values default to 1; serialized zero values are rejected.
  • Public APIs validate positive integral CP/DCP values.
  • Runner timing configuration rejects CP/DCP conflicts before capacity materialization.
  • DCP changes engine-handle identity and KV-cache capacity estimates.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

ModelConfig.dcp_comm is a changed public input, but its contract stops at BaseModel._dcp_comm_style. build_model_config and compile_engine accept cp_size and dcp_size but not dcp_comm, and no engine identity or serialization field carries it. The CLI schema has no dcp_comm field. module_bridge reads getattr(task_config, "dcp_comm", None), but the changed Task dataclass declares no such field. Tests cover direct ModelConfig(..., dcp_comm="a2a") and a test double, but no public builder, compiler, serialization, documentation, or end-to-end deployment path. This leaves the new collective-selection input unavailable or silently defaulted outside direct model construction.

Resolution

Trace dcp_comm through the complete public path. Add it to the relevant Task/CLI or generator configuration input, validate the allowed values, and pass it through build_model_config, compile_engine, Rust engine-build requests, and canonical timing/deployment configuration. Include it in engine identity serialization so ag_rs, a2a, and any supported backend-specific mode cannot share a compiled handle. Map the launch-level dcp_comm_backend to the same modeled collective, or reject modes that the estimator cannot represent. Add user documentation and end-to-end tests that configure the value through each public entry point, verify generated flags, verify selected collectives, verify serialization/identity separation, and verify the default path.

Price the DCP gather on the DSA CP path.

DeepSeekV32Model supports both CP and DCP on SGLang. ModelConfig treats them as independent, and compile_engine and KVCacheEstimator.from_request forward both values without a mutual-exclusion check. Construction therefore can set both fields on the same ContextDSAModule.

When cp_size > 1, DsaModuleOp::query_context returns before dcp_context_gather. For dcp_size > 1, prefix > 0, and a nonzero batch, that helper adds the cached latent-KV all-gather. The current branch omits that latency and can underprice cached-context requests. The FPM SOL rejection does not constrain the op-level path.

Move the gather into the CP branch, while preserving the existing scaling. query_context_cp already scales its result, so scale only the added gather:

         if self.cp_size > 1 {
             let full = self.query_context_cp(db, batch_size, isl, prefix, false)?;

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Validate effective Workers.* context-parallel overrides before sizing.

context_parallel_params() validates the task-derived CP, DCP, and communication values before _deep_merge() applies Workers.<role> overrides. An override can therefore bypass version checks, allowed communication backends, and the requirement that dcp_comm_backend requires DCP. It may render an invalid communication flag or silently omit a CP flag for an older template.

Worker counts are also derived from the pre-merge gpus_per_worker. The backend rules later recompute per-worker GPU sizing from the overridden CP value, so total worker allocation can differ from the requested GPU budget.

Merge the worker overrides first, validate the effective CP/DCP/communication values, and recompute gpus_per_worker before deriving worker counts. Reject direct gpus_per_worker overrides or require them to match the effective parallelism.

Do not fall back after a DCP capability rejection.

When KVCacheEstimator.from_request() rejects dcp_size > 1 with NotImplementedError, this broad handler catches it. With allow_naive_fallback=True, it calls NaiveKVCacheEstimator without dcp_size, so the fallback computes an unstriped DCP=1 capacity estimate instead of rejecting the unsupported request.

Re-raise DCP capability failures before the naive fallback. Add a regression test for an unsupported DCP model with allow_naive_fallback=True.

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate==0.12.0 in pyproject.toml:17; its planner uses the AIC SDK shipped in AISimulate (components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/engine_query.py:6-8). The new DCP functionality therefore requires coordinated package release/version updates before Dynamo can consume it. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The planner AIC payload includes cp_size but hardcodes it to None and has no dcp_size field (components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/aic_adapter.py:246-268). DCP-enabled planner configurations would not be represented in this integration. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Runtime SGLang integration already consumes dcp_size, defaults missing values to 1, multiplies the logical KV-event block size by DCP, and disables incompatible hierarchical-cache behavior (components/src/dynamo/sglang/capacity.py:86-95,159-166; components/src/dynamo/sglang/register.py:190-198). The new generator/runtime flags must preserve this metadata path. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The SGLang sidecar similarly reads dcp_size from server discovery and computes kv_cache_block_size = page_size * dcp_size (lib/sidecar/sglang/src/engine.rs:916-923). [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The compatibility reference currently models only cp_size: ParallelMapping has no DCP field (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:185-200), and Python engine-spec conversion emits only cp_size (aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/engine.py:284-290). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Its public compile_engine signature and regression contract likewise contain no dcp_size (tests/cross_package/test_core_public_api.py:66-78). The new field should remain additive/defaulted when maintaining migration compatibility with this frozen reference. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The reference explicitly requires Python/Rust engine schema versions to match (tests/cross_package/test_core_version_contract.py:60-63), reinforcing that the schema bump must be applied consistently on both producer and consumer sides. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

428-439: 🎯 Functional Correctness

CoreRecommendationConfig.model_validate(core_raw) runs before run_recommendation, and StrictModel sets extra="forbid". ParallelismRecommendationConfig does not declare prefill_context or decode_context, so an independent context-parallelism key is rejected during configuration validation and never reaches _parallel_entries. The claimed silent discard path is not reachable through the recommend command, so the proposed guard is unnecessary.

🟠 Major · Make the naive fallback DCP-aware or reject DCP there. · memory.py:1121-1132

python/aisimulate/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/memory.py:1121-1132
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Make the naive fallback DCP-aware or reject DCP there.

When native construction fails, this path creates NaiveKVCacheEstimator without dcp_size. Its estimate() therefore uses unstriped KV bytes and the unadjusted token inverse. dcp_size > 1 can return the same token capacity as dcp_size=1, producing an incorrect capacity estimate. The naive estimator has no DCP capability check that rejects this input.

Pass DCP into the fallback and apply the same divisor to its per-token bytes and inverse calculations. If the fallback cannot establish DCP support for the model, reject dcp_size > 1 instead.

🟡 Minor · Include prefill CP in the worker GPU formula. · user-guide.md:1119-1120

docs/cli/user-guide.md:1119-1120
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include prefill CP in the worker GPU formula.

This section describes the physical GPU count. The executable sizing path multiplies the worker world size by prefill context parallelism. With parallelism.prefill_context > 1, the current formula underreports the required GPUs.

Update the formula to include parallelism.prefill_context. Keep parallelism.decode_context excluded because it adds no GPUs.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate==0.12.0 and aisimulate-core==0.12.0 exactly in pyproject.toml:17, Cargo.toml:59, and enforces matching releases in tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_consistency.py:97-130. The DCP changes require a coordinated AISimulate release and downstream pin update. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The Planner AIC payload includes cp_size but no dcp_size (components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/aic_adapter.py:246-268), so DCP-enabled planner configurations are currently not represented. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing SGLang integration treats dcp_size as part of the KV-cache contract: it scales router event blocks as page_size * dcp_size and disables incompatible hierarchical caching when DCP exceeds one (components/src/dynamo/sglang/capacity.py:86-95,159-166; components/src/dynamo/sglang/register.py:190-198). New generated/configured DCP behavior should preserve this metadata path. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The frozen compatibility reference’s ParallelMapping remains CP-only (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:182-200), and Python engine conversion emits only cp_size (aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/engine.py:283-290). This confirms dcp_size must remain additive/defaulted for migration compatibility. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The reference requires Rust and Python engine schema versions to match (tests/cross_package/test_core_version_contract.py:60-63), while its current frozen schema is version 15 (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:17-25). The PR’s schema bump therefore needs synchronized producer/consumer releases; older reference artifacts will reject the new wire schema. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Prefill CP (`cp_size`, SGLang `--attn-cp-size`) and decode CP (vLLM `-dcp`,
SGLang `--dcp-size`) are different things: the first splits prefill tokens
across extra attention ranks and leaves decode replicated with a full KV per
rank; the second stripes the decode KV by token position across ranks that
already belong to the attention group. This adds `dcp_size` as an orthogonal
per-phase field instead of overloading `cp_size`.

Plumbing
- ModelConfig.dcp_size (+ dcp_comm) with positive-int validation; it does not
  fold into attn_width / total_gpus_per_worker.
- build_model_config / compile_engine / estimate_kv_cache / estimate_num_gpu_blocks
  accept cp_size + dcp_size; engine identity (engine.py, rust_engine_step.py,
  Rust ParallelMapping) carries dcp_size so dcp variants never share a handle.
- Unified CLI: parallelism.prefill_context / decode_context; the compiler only
  spells them out when != 1 so existing outputs stay byte-identical.
- Runner aliases + Rust AicTimingConfig cp_size / dcp_size (topology check is
  tp * dp * cp == moe_tp * moe_ep; dcp deliberately absent).
- Per-rank KV memory divides by dcp (prefill CP keeps divisor 1).

Topology rule (not a model-building rule)
- Aggregated workers accept at most one of prefill CP / decode CP above 1,
  enforced in the compiler agg branch and task_v2 iter_parallel("agg").
  Disaggregated roles carry each knob on their own worker with no cross-check.
- The old "decode CP must be 1" gate in task_v2 is removed; dcp is a per-role
  scalar (dcp_size / prefill_dcp_size / decode_dcp_size) because the
  (tp, pp, dp, moe_tp, moe_ep, cp) tuple is unpacked positionally downstream.

Pricing
- GenerationAttentionOp / GenerationMlaOp / WideEpGenerationMlaOp / DsaModuleOp /
  MlaModuleOp gain a tail-appended dcp_size; the kernel prices n_local * dcp
  gathered query heads over a ceil(kv / dcp) stripe (dcp_geometry). FPM SOL
  leaves apply the same geometry. ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION 18 -> 19.
- BaseModel._apply_decode_context_parallel rewrites generation_ops once for
  every class (recursing into FallbackOp): sets dcp on the decode attention op
  and appends the DCP collectives (query all-gather + ag_rs reduce-scatter or
  a2a all-to-all merge). Model classes only declare supports_dcp.
- Enabled: DeepSeek MLA (vllm, sglang), DeepSeek-V3.2 / GLM-5 DSA (vllm,
  sglang), dense GQA and GQA-MoE (vllm, dcp <= tp / kv_heads). Others fail
  loud at get_model.

Known approximations: gathered Q is priced even where the frameworks replicate
the Q projection; the DSA decode top-k is kept whole (upper bound); nested
attention ops outside FallbackOp are not rewritten.

Two correctness gaps left by the first DCP commit:

- forward_model='fpm' with dcp_size > 1 would silently reuse dcp=1 whole-forward
  cells (the FPM cell identity carries prefill `cp`, not dcp, and every shipped
  cell is cp=1). `_apply_forward_model_fpm` now fails loud until the collector
  records dcp cells and the identity carries the column.

- Aggregated serving on a DCP-striped engine: a prefill that reuses cached
  context first all-gathers the other ranks' KV stripes (vLLM
  `_context_parallel_compute_prefill_context` / `dcp_manager.kv_gather`, SGLang
  `all_gather_kv_cache_for_*_extend`); new-token attention is unchanged.
  ContextAttentionOp, ContextMlaOp, DsaModuleOp (context) and MlaModuleOp
  (context) gain a tail-appended `dcp_size` and add `dcp_context_gather`, an
  NCCL all-gather of batch * prefix cached tokens over the DCP group; the FPM
  SOL leaves carry the same term. `_apply_decode_context_parallel` marks the
  prefill attention ops (recursing into FallbackOp); decode-only workers never
  query them. pyo3 shells expose `dcp_size` / `_dcp_size` on the context ops.

Teach the deployment generator the two context-parallel knobs the
simulator now carries, so a CP-evaluated topology launches as a CP
deployment instead of silently dropping the knob.

- New generator/context_parallel.py is the single decision point: it
  version-gates the flags (vLLM -dcp >= 0.10.2, -pcp >= 0.12.0,
  --dcp-comm-backend >= 0.18.0; SGLang --attn-cp-size/--dcp-size
  >= 0.5.15, --dcp-comm-backend >= 0.5.17), picks the SGLang
  --cp-strategy (interleave for DSA architectures, zigzag otherwise),
  and rejects TRT-LLM, whose Helix CP the simulator does not model.
- backend_config_mapping.yaml maps context_parallel_size,
  cp_strategy, decode_context_parallel_size and dcp_comm_backend.
- vLLM cli_args 0.14.1/0.16.0/0.19.0/0.20.1 render both flags
  (0.19.0+ also the comm backend). New SGLang cli_args.0.5.15.j2 and
  0.5.17.j2 render --enable-prefill-cp --attn-cp-size --cp-strategy
  and --dcp-size (0.5.17 adds --dcp-comm-backend); the pre-0.5.15
  templates stay untouched.
- Rules: SGLang folds prefill CP into --tensor-parallel-size for dense
  models (MoE is already moe_tp x moe_ep); vLLM multiplies
  gpus_per_worker by prefill CP. Decode CP adds no GPUs anywhere. The
  SGLang fold is a per-role expression because `when` blocks evaluate
  once over the merged scope and would fold the decode worker too.
- module_bridge reads the swept cp column plus the task's per-role
  dcp_size; from_sweeper_candidate reads optional cp/dcp columns.
  Replica math uses the rule-computed gpus_per_worker.
- The FPM builder's world-size check counts -pcp.

Sweep/recommend search spaces do not enumerate either knob yet; they
are CLI-driven inputs.

stripe but still handed the model's own get_kvcache_max_tokens to the
budget->token inverse, so total_kv_size_tokens (and every block count
derived from it) did not move with dcp_size: DeepSeek-V3 on 8x H200 kept
16878 blocks per rank at dcp=8, the same as dcp=1, and the serving
simulation never admitted the extra concurrency DCP exists to buy.

Wrap the inverse so a rank-local budget of B bytes is sized as the tokens
whose FULL KV is B * dcp bytes (every token is spread over the dcp ranks).
dcp=1 keeps the model's inverse object untouched. DeepSeek-V3 tp8 ep8 now
reports 135027 blocks per rank at dcp=8 (x8).

A ParallelismPredictionConfig round-tripped through model_dump carries
prefill_context / decode_context (at 1). ParallelismRecommendationConfig's
custom-preset validator treated them as unknown knobs, which broke the
recommend -> predict round trip. Accept the two keys there; recommend still
rejects values above 1. Also note engine-spec schema 19 (DCP) in the
Python schema history.

Resolve the three conflicts and thread the context-parallel knobs through
the unified estimator interface introduced by ai-dynamo#242:

- sdk/engine.py: compile_engine keeps cp_size/dcp_size alongside upstream's
  try/except InvalidEngineConfigurationError shape.
- crates/core/src/python.rs: the capacity path now builds the native engine
  from AicTimingConfig::estimator_request, so the request carries
  cp_size/dcp_size; ForwardPassPerfModelConfig, EngineBuildRequest,
  AicEngineBuilder::context_parallelism, the EngineConfig and legacy
  conversions, and the Python compile kwargs all pass them through. The
  estimator config validates positivity and folds only cp_size into
  tp * attention_dp * cp_size == moe_tp_size * moe_ep_size; unset knobs
  stay out of the serialized identity.
- compiler.py lowers the knobs into the canonical timing config (default
  timing strips the legacy aic_* args); aic.py lowers them back into the KV
  capacity estimate from the resolved provenance; the sweeper resolver reads
  optional cp/dcp columns; the Python ForwardPassPerfModelConfig dataclass
  gains the two fields; docs/core-api.md documents them.
- tests/test_cli_config.py: both new test blocks kept; the deployment tests
  now assert on timing_model.config instead of the stripped aic_* args.

- get_model records _backend_name for families whose constructors do not,
  so the DCP merge collective defaults to a2a on SGLang for every family.
- generator/context_parallel.py: vLLM floors for both knobs are 0.14.1, the
  first cli_args template that renders the flags; floor-match selection can
  no longer pick a template that silently drops a requested knob.
- SGLang rules: gpus_per_worker no longer counts attention DP twice when the
  MoE fold applied (--dp partitions the folded --tp). Pre-existing; fixed in
  both rule sets with a test.
- compiler: AFD companion workers reject prefill_context/decode_context > 1
  (their ParallelShape and GPU accounting carry tp/pp/dp/moe only).
- runner: aic_cp_size / aic_dcp_size must match parallel_config.cp / .dcp,
  like tp and attention_dp.
- memory.estimate_kv_cache: a CP/DCP capability rejection is never degraded
  into the naive (unstriped) estimator.
- DsaModuleOp prices the striped-KV context gather on the CP path too.
- module_bridge re-validates Workers.<role> overrides of the CP knobs through
  the decision point and re-derives gpus_per_worker from effective values.

Validate nested AIC CP topology before capacity materialization.

materialize_aic_num_gpu_blocks can resolve timing_model.config.cp_size and dcp_size into AIC capacity inputs before _materialize_engine_role validates rank-level aliases. The later checks do not inspect nested CP/DCP values, so timing_model.config.dcp_size=2 can bypass parallel_config.dcp=1. The emitted timing model retains the nested value, and estimator-backed configs can also materialize capacity for DCP 2. Validate present nested cp_size and dcp_size values against the role-specific parallel_config fields before this call.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Validate CP and DCP before topology construction.

estimate_kv_cache converts both values with int(...) before calling KVCacheEstimator.from_request. Thus, 1.9 and True become 1, while 2.5 becomes 2. The public API can estimate a different topology instead of rejecting the input.

The direct KVCacheEstimator.from_request path passes raw values to build_model_config. ModelConfig.__post_init__ validates dcp_size, but it does not validate cp_size as an integer. resolve_moe_parallelism only checks that CP is positive, so invalid CP values can reach model construction.

Reject non-positive, fractional, and boolean CP/DCP values at both public boundaries. Add CP validation to ModelConfig, and validate the raw values in estimate_kv_cache before the coercion and fallback block. Keep the existing direct DCP validation.

🟡 Minor · Reject zero-valued DsaModuleOp.dcp_size during spec deserialization. · dsa.rs:74

crates/core/src/perfmodel/operators/dsa.rs:74
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject zero-valued DsaModuleOp.dcp_size during spec deserialization. EngineSpec::from_bincode accepts the deserialized op list without validating this field. DsaGeneration passes zero to attention::dcp_geometry, which silently normalizes it to 1 with .max(1). Invalid serialized input therefore selects non-DCP geometry instead of failing loudly. Enforce dcp_size > 0 before accepting the EngineSpec.

Second review round:
- module_bridge hands raw Workers.<role> override values to the generator
  decision point, which now also rejects booleans, so 2.5 / "invalid" /
  True / 0 fail instead of being coerced into another topology.
- estimate_kv_cache validates raw cp_size/dcp_size (positive, integral, not
  bool) before coercion, model build or naive fallback; ModelConfig applies
  the dcp_size rule to cp_size as well.
- The runner checks nested timing_model.config.cp_size/dcp_size against
  parallel_config before capacity materialization.
- Every tail-appended dcp_size op field deserializes through
  deserialize_positive_split, so a serialized zero fails at spec load
  instead of collapsing to non-DCP geometry.
- DSA: the CP-path gather composition is a pure helper with its own test;
  dcp_context_gather gains a Rust oracle test on the b200 database.

Follow-ups for the outside-diff findings from the second CodeRabbit round (no thread to reply on):

  • runner.py: validate nested AIC CP topology before capacity materialization — _require_nested_context_parallel_match checks timing_model.config.cp_size/dcp_size against parallel_config.<role>cp/dcp before materialize_aic_num_gpu_blocks runs. Test: test_runner_rejects_nested_timing_context_parallel_that_conflicts_with_parallel_config.
  • memory.py: validate CP and DCP before topology construction — estimate_kv_cache rejects non-positive, fractional and boolean cp_size/dcp_size before the int(...) coercion, the model build and the naive fallback; ModelConfig.__post_init__ applies the same integer rule to cp_size that dcp_size already had. Tests in test_memory_estimation.py and test_dcp_plumbing.py.
  • dsa.rs: reject zero dcp_size at spec deserialization — every tail-appended dcp_size field (attention, MLA, MLA module, wide-EP MLA, DSA) now deserializes through deserialize_positive_split, so an explicit zero fails at spec load (JSON and bincode) instead of being normalized by dcp_geometry. Test: serialized_zero_dcp_size_is_rejected_and_positive_is_kept.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve invalid dcp_size values until validation.

Task is a plain dataclass, so direct construction accepts dcp_size=0, False, or None. _role_attr returns that raw value, and Task.__post_init__ does not validate it. The or 1 expression converts it to 1 before ModelConfig.__post_init__, which otherwise rejects non-positive and boolean values. This silently models malformed input with DCP disabled.

Remove the falsy fallback in both build_model_config and iter_parallel so invalid values reach validation instead of selecting dcp_size=1:

- dcp_size=int(self._role_attr(role, "dcp_size") or 1),
+ dcp_size=self._role_attr(role, "dcp_size"),

Apply the same change to the local dcp_size assignment in iter_parallel.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Validate CP/DCP before coercion in estimate_num_gpu_blocks.

estimate_kv_cache rejects booleans and fractional CP/DCP values before conversion. However, estimate_num_gpu_blocks passes cp_size=int(cp_size) and dcp_size=int(dcp_size). Inputs such as True or 1.9 become 1, bypass validation, and can reach model construction with a different topology. Pass the raw values to estimate_kv_cache, which already validates them, and add a regression test through estimate_num_gpu_blocks that rejects these inputs before model construction.

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • components/src/dynamo/sglang/args.py:257-296 already validates and rejects unsupported dcp_size values; new estimator/deployment behavior should preserve these failure paths. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • components/src/dynamo/sglang/capacity.py:90-95,163 scales KV event granularity and cache compatibility by dcp_size, with legacy missing values defaulting to 1. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • pyproject.toml:17 and Cargo.toml:59 pin AISimulate packages to 0.12.0; schema 19 and DCP APIs require coordinated artifact and pin updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The planner adapter at components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/aic_adapter.py:246-268 forwards cp_size but not dcp_size, leaving planner-generated AIC requests unable to configure DCP independently. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The frozen core remains at schema version 15 (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:72), with matching hard-coded expectations in aic-core/rust/tests/public-api/src/lib.rs:85 and tests/unit/sdk/database/test_attention_lanes.py:250. It cannot consume schema 19 artifacts without a coordinated compatibility release. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • tests/cross_package/test_core_version_contract.py:17,62 requires Python and Rust schema versions to match; pyproject.toml:43 pins aiconfigurator-core==0.12.0. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

- DSA: the striped cached-context gather carries the indexer K cache
  (128 bf16 per token) weighted by the effective full-indexer fraction, in
  both DsaModuleOp::query_context and the FPM SOL leaf
  (dsa_cached_context_gather_elems, unit-tested).
- module_bridge: a Workers.<role> cp_strategy override may only restate
  the model-derived strategy; a contradicting one fails loud.
- runner: the nested-timing CP/DCP consistency check also reads
  rank.timing_model; the loop variable no longer shadows dataclasses.field
  (CI ruff F402).
- task_v2: a malformed role dcp_size (0 / False / None) is rejected instead
  of defaulting to 1; ModelConfig rejects non-numeric cp_size/dcp_size;
  estimate_num_gpu_blocks passes raw cp/dcp so estimate_kv_cache validates
  them.

Third-round outside-diff findings, addressed in the latest commit:

  • task_v2.py: preserve invalid dcp_size until validation — the or 1 fallbacks in build_model_config and iter_parallel are gone; Task._role_dcp_size rejects 0 / False / None / fractional values with a role-specific message. Test: test_malformed_role_dcp_size_is_rejected_not_defaulted. ModelConfig.__post_init__ additionally rejects non-numeric cp_size/dcp_size.
  • memory.py: validate CP/DCP before coercion in estimate_num_gpu_blocks — the wrapper now passes the raw values through, so estimate_kv_cache's validation sees True / 1.9 / 0 before any model build. Test: test_estimate_num_gpu_blocks_rejects_malformed_context_parallel_sizes.

The Python Static Checks failure on the previous commit (ruff F402, loop variable shadowing dataclasses.field in runner.py) is fixed in the same commit.

Behavior-preserving consolidation of the review-round additions:

- aiconfigurator_core.sdk.config.validate_parallel_size is the single
  positive-integer rule; ModelConfig, estimate_kv_cache, Task._role_dcp_size
  and the generator decision point all call it instead of carrying their own.
- compiler._context_parallel_knobs spells the two knobs out (only when set)
  for parallel_config, perf-model metadata, legacy aic_* args and the
  canonical estimator config, replacing four copies of the same two ifs.
- module_bridge validates the effective CP knobs once, after Workers.<role>
  overrides are merged, instead of once before and again after.
- BaseModel._through_fallback is the shared FallbackOp walker for the decode
  rewrite and the context striping; the DCP merge collective picks its kind
  and name from one table.
- Drop the unused context_parallel_gpu_multiplier.

Conflict resolutions:
- ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION: upstream ai-dynamo#159 took 19 for the DeepSeek-V4.1
  kv_cache_layout; decode context parallelism is renumbered to 20 (Rust
  constant, spec.rs handshake tests and op doc comments, Python schema test).
- Package consolidation (aiconfigurator_core -> aisimulate_core,
  aiconfigurator -> aisimulate): re-applied the cp/dcp changes to the renamed
  sdk/{engine,memory,rust_engine_step}.py and moved the new generator module,
  SGLang 0.5.15/0.5.17 templates and tests to the new paths.
- runner.py, config_builders.py, generator_overview.md: kept both sides.
- KV-capacity test stubs now carry the database version and the
  get_kvcache_batch_capacity inverse that upstream memory.py reads.

Every CP/DCP value already fails loud in exactly one place per entry
point (ModelConfig.__post_init__, estimate_kv_cache, the generator
decision point); the layers that re-checked the same thing are gone:

- Task._role_dcp_size wrapper removed; the role attribute is handed to
  ModelConfig, which validates it.
- BaseModel: the dcp<=1 early returns in _apply_decode_context_parallel
  and _dcp_attn_comm_ops (only reached for dcp>1), the max(1, ...)
  clamps on validated ints, and the getattr/or-1 fallback on
  ModelConfig.dcp_size in the FPM guard.
- module_bridge: the try/except model_family helper is a plain getattr
  (Task.model_family is a simple property).
- memory.py: one budget->token closure that always applies the stripe
  divisor (1.0 when dcp=1) instead of two branches.

Tests: the malformed-input matrices (memory 16 cases, ModelConfig 8,
Task 4) shrink to one representative case per knob; the duplicate
estimate_num_gpu_blocks variant and two template no-op checks are
removed. Net -86 lines.

B200 measurements (DeepSeek-V3, vLLM, tp8) put the per-step DCP
communication 1.5-1.9x above the model. Two structural omissions,
both read off vllm/v1/attention/ops/dcp.py:

- ag_rs (`cp_lse_ag_out_rs`): every layer all-gathers the fp32 LSE
  before the output reduce-scatter. The message is tiny but latency
  bound (~16-19 us on 8 GPUs), so 61 layers cost about 1 ms per decode
  step; measured 15-20 us per call. Modeled as an NCCL all_gather of
  2 half-elements per gathered head, plus the `correct_attn_out`
  rescale as an ElementWise pass over the gathered outputs.
- a2a (`dcp_a2a_lse_reduce`): the all-to-all payload packs the LSE
  (2 half slots per head) next to each head's output, and the pack and
  unpack/combine passes are elementwise work. The all-to-all is sized
  with the packed width and both passes are priced.

DeepSeek-V3 on 8x B200 (vLLM 0.24.0, bs32, 32k): DCP collectives +
elementwise 2.8 -> 4.1 ms per decode step; the LSE gather alone is
1.0 ms. Elementwise passes are memory-roofline and carry no launch
floor, so the remaining gap to the measured 1.2-1.9 ms of elementwise
work is launch overhead the ElementWise model does not represent.

…able

The NCCL table is keyed by nccl-tests `size`: for all_gather that is the
whole receive buffer, not one rank's contribution. `context_cp_all_gather`
already follows that convention (full per-token KV over the sequence) and
`dcp_context_gather` passes `batch * prefix * kv` (the gathered cached
context), but the two decode-side DCP gathers passed one rank's share and
so looked up a message dcp times too small: the q gather at 8 ranks read
19 us where a same-version nccl-tests rerun and vLLM (ncclDevKernel
AllGather RING_LL, no custom path) both give ~30-32 us.

q all-gather now carries `n_local * dcp * q_dim` and the LSE gather
`n_local * dcp * 2 * dcp` half-elements. DeepSeek-V3 on 8x B200 (vLLM
0.24.0, bs32, 32k): q gather 19.3 -> 30.9 us per layer, LSE gather
16.3 -> 19.2 us; DCP collectives + elementwise 4.1 -> 5.0 ms per decode
step. Reduce-scatter (total input) and all-to-all (per-rank buffer) were
already sized by the table's convention.

A prefill engine gains nothing from striping its KV: the KV only passes
through to the decode worker, and striping adds the cached-context gather
plus a re-layout on transfer. Both frameworks agree (SGLang warns that DCP
on a PD prefill server "usually adds communication overhead without
improving prefill performance"; vLLM's NIXL connector only pairs it as
the PCP+DCP layout). The simulator used to accept any prefill dcp.

Rules, enforced in the compiler's disaggregated branch and in
Task.iter_parallel("prefill"):
- prefill decode_context must be 1 or equal to its prefill_context
  (the PCP+DCP layout); for Task, prefill_dcp_size > 1 requires
  prefill_cp_candidates == [prefill_dcp_size].
- vLLM only (nixl/base_worker.py _validate_remote_parallel_config): a
  replicated-PCP prefill (pcp > 1, dcp = 1) cannot pair with a
  DCP-sharded decode, and the two DCP sizes must divide one another.
  SGLang re-lays the KV out per decode DCP rank on the prefill side and
  keeps prefill CP + decode DCP without a pairing rule.

Upstream ai-dynamo#270 (sweeper min-GPUs target) and ai-dynamo#291 (replay keeps timing and
capacity on the selected database version). One conflict, tests/test_aic.py:
both sides appended tests behind the same anchor; kept both (our
context-parallel knob forwarding tests, upstream's omitted-version capacity
tests).

- ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION: upstream took 20 for the DeepSeek-V4.1 FPM
  selector field (original_fmha_quant_mode); decode context parallelism is
  renumbered to 21 (constant, spec.rs note, op field doc comments, Python
  schema test).
- compiler.py: upstream rebuilt the worker performance-model metadata as a
  `config` dict with database_mode / speculation / fpm_parquet_path; the
  cp_size / dcp_size knobs are added to that dict.
- runner.py: upstream extracted `_pop_aic_timing_overrides`; cp_size /
  dcp_size join its positive-int set and the parallel_config cross-check
  runs on the returned overrides.
- test_attention_lanes.py, test_cli_config.py: both sides appended tests;
  kept both.

Upstream now constructs build_model_config and ForwardPassPerfModelConfig
positionally up to wideep_num_slots / nextn, so cp_size and dcp_size move
to keyword-only in both (every caller already passes them by keyword).

Upstream ai-dynamo#282 (exact MoE kernel source) took schema 21; decode context
parallelism is renumbered to 22 (constant, spec.rs note, op field doc
comments, Python schema test). The other conflicts were adjacent
additions: `validate_parallel_size` next to `normalize_kernel_source`
in config.py, `moe_kernel_source` next to the keyword-only CP knobs in
build_model_config, and the DCP rewrite ahead of the kernel-source graph
check in get_model. Both sides kept everywhere.

Upstream's new spec.rs test asserted `schema_version == 21` literally; it
now compares against ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION like its neighbours. Its
positional-arguments test for ForwardPassPerfModelConfig lists the
keyword-only defaults explicitly, so cp_size / dcp_size join that list.

Thanks for splitting DCP out as its own knob — the plumbing and the ag_rs geometry line up with vLLM (vllm/v1/attention/ops/dcp.py::cp_lse_ag_out_rs, flashmla_sparse.py gathered-heads padding) and with an nsys timeline we have for GLM-5 NVFP4 on B200 (TP4+DCP4, ag_rs, fp8 KV). A few modeling gaps against the frameworks as of vLLM c6843d397c / SGLang e49d7fb170, ordered by impact.

Pricing

1. DSA decode: sparse attention is priced over the whole index_topk, real per-rank work is ~topk / dcp. dsa.rs notes this is an "upper bound". In vLLM the DCP filter (sparse_utils.py::triton_filter_and_convert_dcp_index) marks non-owned slots -1 and, with compact_valid_to_front, the trtllm-gen kernel reads only valid_count entries per row. For GLM-5 (topk 2048) at dcp=4 each rank touches ~512 tokens, so the sparse-attention term is ~4x high. Suggest ceil(index_topk / dcp) on the token axis (the loop trip count is unchanged, the KV bytes are not).

2. DSA decode: the indexer candidate all-gather is not modeled. sparse_attn_indexer.py::_merge_dcp_topk_global packs (score, id) fp32 per rank, does one get_dcp_group().all_gather(packed, dim=1) (B * topk * 2 * fp32 per rank), then a CuteDSL stable-topk. Small in bytes but one extra NCCL launch + two kernels per DSA layer; at decode batch sizes that is launch-bound the same way the lse_correct elementwise you already price is.

3. q_all_gather dtype should follow fmha_quant_mode, not the global comm_quant_mode. vLLM quantizes the MQA query to fp8 before the DCP gather when fp8_attention and supports_quant_query_input (mla_attention.py: _decode_concat_quant_fp8_op → dcp_manager.query_gather). With fp8 KV the AG-q is fp8; pricing it at half doubles the buffer.

4. SWA under DCP (fpm_sol.rs::generation_attention_sol, and the kv_local/window_size interaction in attention.rs): the stripe holds every dcp-th position, so a window of w occupies ~w / dcp local tokens. Current kv_len = min(ceil(s/dcp) - 1, w) shows no DCP benefit on SWA layers for s/dcp > w.

5. ContextAttentionOp::query adds dcp_context_gather before scaled(seq_imbalance_correction_scale), so the NCCL latency is multiplied by the zigzag imbalance factor on a PCP+DCP disagg prefill worker with a cached prefix. ContextMlaOp and the DSA paths add it after; make attention consistent.

Consistency with what the frameworks accept

6. fi_a2a: generator/context_parallel.py allows {"ag_rs","a2a","fi_a2a"} for SGLang, but BaseModel._dcp_comm_style only accepts ("ag_rs","a2a") and raises otherwise. SGLang's default is fi_a2a where supported (Blackwell, DCP group inside one MNNVL domain), else a2a (arg_groups/fields/parallel.py). Either map fi_a2a → a2a for pricing or reject it in the generator too.

7. DSA on vLLM only runs with ag_rs and the fp8 mixed-batch KV path. flashmla_sparse.py raises NotImplementedError for any other dcp_comm_backend and for the bf16 sparse path. The PR will happily price GLM-5 / V3.2 with dcp_comm="a2a" or non-fp8 KV, i.e. a configuration vLLM refuses to launch. Worth a gate in _validate_dcp_topology or the model class.

8. Kimi-K3 supports_dcp=False "matching the frameworks" is true for vLLM but not SGLang. SGLang ships K3 DCP support (arg_groups/model_overrides/kimi_k3.py, _require_kimi_k3_cutedsl_dcp_support, enable_dcp into trtllm_batch_decode_with_kv_cache_mla; models/kimi_k3.py::prepare_context_parallel_metadata_for_dcp). DCP applies to the 24 MLA layers; the KDA layers have no KV to stripe and ignore it. Suggest per-backend supports_dcp.

9. Related to 8: SGLang's K3 override defaults dcp_replicate_q_proj=True under a2a/fi_a2a, which removes the per-layer Q all-gather. The PR documents dcp_q_replicate as not modeled ("gathered Q is priced") — conservative on vLLM, but if K3/SGLang is enabled it prices a collective that isn't there.

Generator

10. rule_plugin/vllm.rule (and benchmark/vllm.rule) folds CP into TP twice for MoE. Line 14 already sets tensor_parallel_size = moe_tp*moe_ep // dp (= tp*cp under attn_width = tp*dp*cp == moe_tp*moe_ep), then line 19 multiplies by context_parallel_size again. A Sweeper candidate tp=8, dp=1, cp=2, moe_tp=1, moe_ep=16 renders --tensor-parallel-size 16 --prefill-context-parallel-size 2 and reports gpus_per_worker = 32 for a 16-GPU evaluated topology. sglang.rule has the dense-only guard; mirror it. Tests only cover dense Qwen3 today.

11. PyContextDSAModule::__getnewargs_ex__ (py_ops.rs) was not updated to carry dcp_size (the other four context/MLA/DSA ops were) and the constructor hard-codes dcp_size: 1, so copy.deepcopy(model) / ProcessPoolExecutor silently drops the striped-KV context gather for DSA.

Verified OK while looking: FallbackOp rebuild keeps seq_split, NCCL sizing matches whole-buffer keying, KV-capacity inverse has no double dcp divisor, the 0.5.15/0.5.17 SGLang templates are a strict superset of 0.5.11, _require_parallel_match tolerates absent cp/dcp.

Happy to share the GLM-5 DCP4 nsys numbers (per-layer fmha MultiCtasKv, AG-q, AG-lse, RS-attn, AG-cand) if useful for anchoring 1–3.

Pricing (vLLM c6843d397c / SGLang e49d7fb170 as the reference):
- DSA decode: the sparse attention reads the rank's ceil(topk / dcp) owned
  slots (vLLM filters and compacts the global top-k per rank). The SOL leaf
  takes a topk divisor; the module-table path apportions the measured time
  with the SOL(topk/dcp) / SOL(topk) ratio at the same geometry.
- DSA decode: price the indexer candidate merge (pack, all-gather of
  dcp x topk x (score, id) fp32, stable top-k) per layer.
- The DCP query all-gather follows fmha_quant_mode (fp8 attention gathers
  an fp8 query), not the global comm dtype.
- Sliding-window attention: a window of w occupies ceil(w / dcp) stripe
  positions, in the op-level table lookup, the roofline guard and the FPM
  SOL leaf.
- ContextAttentionOp adds the striped-context gather after the zigzag
  imbalance scaling, like the MLA and DSA context ops.

Framework consistency:
- fi_a2a (SGLang's default where MNNVL allows) prices as a2a.
- DSA on vLLM's FlashMLA sparse backend requires ag_rs and an fp8 KV cache;
  attention_backend="flashinfer" lifts the gate. SGLang's NSA backend has no
  DCP wiring yet, so the DSA family is vLLM-only.
- Kimi-K3 declares DCP on SGLang (MLA layers striped, KDA untouched).
- New ModelConfig.dcp_q_replicate: drop the query all-gather and scale the
  Q-side ops (q_b projection, absorb BMM; through OverlapOp / FallbackOp
  interiors) by dcp. K3 on SGLang defaults it on under a2a.

Generator: the vLLM MoE fold divides by dp x cp so -pcp ranks are counted
once. Bindings: ContextDSAModule carries dcp_size through its constructor
and __getnewargs_ex__ so deepcopy / process pools keep the striped context
gather.

Thanks for the source-level pass. All eleven are addressed in the latest commits; numbered as in the review.

Pricing

  1. DSA top-k per rank. The SOL leaf (dsa_generation_sol) now takes a topk_divisor and prices the sparse attention over min(s_local, ceil(topk / dcp)) tokens while the indexer keeps scoring the whole local stripe; the FPM leaf passes dcp. The module tables are measured at the whole top-k, so on the table path query_generation_table apportions the measured time with the analytic ratio SOL(topk/dcp) / SOL(topk) at the same (b, s_local, heads×dcp). Test: dsa_generation_fpm_sol_stripes_the_top_k.
  2. Indexer candidate all-gather. _dcp_attn_comm_ops adds, for GenerationDSAModule ops, the (score, id) fp32 pack (ElementWise), one NCCL all-gather of dcp × topk × 2 × fp32 and the stable top-k merge over dcp × topk entries (ElementWise) — *_dcp_topk_pack, *_dcp_topk_all_gather, *_dcp_topk_merge. Same caveat as lse_correct: the elementwise passes are roofline-priced without a launch floor.
  3. q all-gather dtype. The gather buffer now follows fmha_quant_mode: fp8 attention → fp8 gather, else comm_quant_mode. Test: test_query_all_gather_follows_the_attention_dtype.
  4. SWA under DCP. Both the op-level path (GenerationAttentionOp::query, table lookup and roofline guard) and the FPM leaf use ceil(w / dcp) as the striped window, so kv_len = min(ceil(s/dcp) − 1, ceil(w/dcp)). Test: generation_attention_fpm_sol_stripes_the_sliding_window.
  5. Gather vs imbalance scaling. ContextAttentionOp::query now adds dcp_context_gather after scaled(seq_imbalance_correction_scale), matching ContextMlaOp and the DSA paths.

Consistency

  1. fi_a2a. _dcp_comm_style maps it to a2a for pricing (same packed buffer); the error message lists all three.
  2. DSA on vLLM. DeepSeekV32Model._validate_dcp_topology rejects dcp_comm != ag_rs and non-fp8 KV on vLLM unless attention_backend="flashinfer" (FLASHINFER_MLA_SPARSE, which has no such restriction). Also: SGLang's NSA backend has no DCP wiring yet (#39330 / #36990 / #39117 are open), so supports_dcp for the DSA family is now vLLM-only.
  3. Kimi-K3. KimiK3Model.supports_dcp is per-backend: sglang only. The rewrite stripes the MLA decode attention (GenerationMLA on the granular SGLang stack); the KDA layers keep no KV and are untouched.
  4. Replicated Q projection. New ModelConfig.dcp_q_replicate (default None → backend/model default). When on, the per-layer query all-gather is dropped and the Q-side ops ahead of the attention (*q_b* projection, *bmm_pre* absorb BMM, including inside OverlapOp / FallbackOp interiors) scale by dcp (weights included). K3 on SGLang defaults it on under the a2a merges, mirroring arg_groups/model_overrides/kimi_k3.py; it is rejected with ag_rs.

Generator

  1. vLLM MoE fold. rule_plugin/vllm.rule folds moe_tp × moe_ep // (dp × cp) into --tensor-parallel-size, so the -pcp ranks are counted once by gpus_per_worker. Your example (tp=8, dp=1, cp=2, moe_ep=16) now renders --tensor-parallel-size 8 --prefill-context-parallel-size 2, 16 GPUs. Test: test_vllm_moe_fold_keeps_prefill_cp_ranks_out_of_tp. (benchmark/vllm.rule has no MoE fold, so it was already right.)
  2. PyContextDSAModule pickle. The constructor takes dcp_size and __getnewargs_ex__ carries it. Test: test_striped_context_dsa_module_survives_a_deepcopy.

The GLM-5 DCP4 nsys numbers (per-layer fmha, AG-q, AG-lse, RS-attn, AG-cand) would be very useful for anchoring 1–3 — please share them.

Brings in ai-dynamo#284 (measured DCP FPM profiles) and reconciles the two DCP
designs on upstream's conventions:

- Canonical estimator config carries `dcp` (Rust ForwardPassPerfModelConfig,
  the Python dataclass, AicTimingConfig, compiler canonical config, runner
  alias target); `dcp_size` stays the internal ModelConfig / ParallelMapping
  / EngineBuildRequest spelling. Our duplicate canonical `dcp_size` is gone;
  `cp_size` (prefill CP) is unchanged.
- ModelConfig.dcp_size is optional: None means not requested (priced as 1)
  and keeps the FPM cell identity on unrecorded-DCP profiles; an explicit 1
  selects recorded-DCP1 cells. Task's per-role dcp fields and the CLI
  decode_context follow (None default); comparisons use `or 1`.
- get_model gates by forward model: fpm + dcp>1 needs vLLM (recorded cells),
  op_level + dcp>1 needs the model class's supports_dcp and runs the
  sharded-attention rewrite. The FPM path no longer runs the rewrite.
- Automatic KV capacity under DCP prices the 1/dcp stripe again (compiler,
  capacity.py, python.rs); upstream's explicit-capacity requirement and the
  transfer-bytes gate are lifted. The Rust FPM gate rejects only regression
  and non-vLLM interpolation.
- ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION 22 -> 25 (upstream took 22 for the VR200 pilot,
  23/24 for the DCP identity and typed FPM DCP).
- Upstream's live-enum test (`prefill_data_filenames_match_live_python_enum`)
  needs an installed wheel in the embedded interpreter and is not runnable in
  this checkout; everything else passes.

…gn comm floor

Addresses tedzhouhk's review on PR ai-dynamo#240 (three reproduced findings).

- Kimi-K3 KDA state is rank-local per request and must not be divided by
  dcp. Replace the scalar divisor at the consumers with two BaseModel hooks,
  get_kvcache_rank_bytes_per_sequence / get_kvcache_rank_batch_capacity
  (default: full KV / dcp, budget * dcp); Kimi-K3 overrides both to reserve
  the KDA state whole and stripe only the MLA token-linear KV. memory.py and
  both base_backend.py KV footprint sites use the hooks. Regression on the
  real model (SGLang, TP8/DCP4, max_batch_size=1): a budget below one
  request's KDA state fits 0 tokens.
- dcp_comm and dcp_q_replicate compile different DCP op graphs for one
  (tp, dcp) identity; add them to the engine cache key so a warm ag_rs
  handle never answers an a2a request (or vice versa).
- vLLM dcp_comm_backend floor 0.18.0 -> 0.19.0: template selection is a
  floor match and 0.18.x lands on cli_args.0.16.0.j2, which has no
  --dcp-comm-backend line. Full-path test at the minimum version asserts
  both flags render and that 0.18.0 is rejected instead of silently
  launching on the default merge.

@tedzhouhk thanks for the reproduced probes. All three are addressed in 97ede80 (replies on each thread):

  1. KDA state outside the DCP divisor — per-rank KV accounting moved into two BaseModel hooks (get_kvcache_rank_bytes_per_sequence / get_kvcache_rank_batch_capacity); Kimi-K3 reserves the KDA state whole and stripes only the MLA token-linear KV. Real-model regression at TP8/DCP4, max_batch_size=1.
  2. Engine cache identity — dcp_comm and dcp_q_replicate are in the key; ag_rs/a2a and q-replicate variants compile distinct handles in either call order.
  3. dcp_comm_backend floor — raised to 0.19.0, the first template that renders the flag; full-path test at the minimum version, 0.18.0 rejected loudly.

Validation on this head: root suite 3057 passed, unit 6096 passed (the remaining failures are the local stale-console-script set, unrelated), ruff clean.

Brings in the FPM decoupling / self-service onboarding stack (ai-dynamo#238, ai-dynamo#248,
ai-dynamo#347), the output adapters (ai-dynamo#334) and the CI changes (ai-dynamo#349, ai-dynamo#351, ai-dynamo#353,
ai-dynamo#354, ai-dynamo#330, ai-dynamo#319).

Conflict resolutions:

- ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION: upstream claimed 25 for the FPM decoupling
  selector; decode CP is renumbered to 26 (positional dcp_size tails on the
  attention / MLA / DSA ops). Stale-payload loops reject 20..25; the 25
  payload keeps the selector like the decoupling branch's 21.
- cp_size: upstream added a CP1-only `cp_size` to compile_engine,
  estimate_kv_cache / estimate_num_gpu_blocks, EngineBuildRequest and the
  legacy Rust compile path ("this SDK entry point does not support context
  parallelism"). This branch supports prefill CP at exactly those entry
  points, so the duplicate parameters / struct field are folded into ours,
  the CP1 gates become positive-integer validation, and the FPM profile cell
  selection receives the real cp_size (a profile without that cell fails
  loud with "no matching FPM deployment profile"). Upstream's tests are
  adjusted accordingly.
- FpmCompileConfig / AicTimingConfig parallel-shape checks combine
  upstream's `fpm_profile.is_none()` exemption with the `* cp_size` fold;
  aic_capacity_kwargs gains cp_size / dcp_size; fpm best_available keeps
  upstream's registered-architecture check ahead of the DCP mode gate.
- capacity.py worker resolution carries aic_cp_size / aic_dcp_size next to
  aic_fpm_profile / worker_type.
- ParallelismPresetConfig.prefill_context becomes Optional (None = 1), like
  decode_context, so default parallelism dumps carry no CP keys; the new
  onboarding topology tests (ai-dynamo#248) compare those dumps against the
  six-key request parallelism. Consumers read it through compiler._prefill_cp.

Merged upstream/main (cab77b9, incl. #238 / #248 / #347) into the branch — the PR is mergeable again.

Two concurrent claims had to be reconciled beyond the usual schema renumbering (decode CP is now ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION 26; upstream's FPM decoupling selector took 25):

  • Upstream added a CP1-only cp_size ("this SDK entry point does not support context parallelism") to compile_engine, estimate_kv_cache / estimate_num_gpu_blocks, EngineBuildRequest and the legacy Rust compile path. This branch supports prefill CP at exactly those entry points, so the duplicates are folded into ours, the CP1 gates become positive-integer validation, and the FPM profile cell selection receives the real cp_size (a profile without that cell fails loud with "no matching FPM deployment profile"). Upstream's two CP tests are adjusted to that.
  • ParallelismPresetConfig.prefill_context is now Optional (None = 1), like decode_context, so default parallelism dumps carry no CP keys; the new onboarding topology tests compare those dumps against the six-key request parallelism and pass unchanged.

Validation on this head: Rust 1803 (+6 binding tests under --features python), unit 7684 passed, root 3469 passed, parity 386 passed; the remaining local failures are the stale-console-script set.

When `best_available` exhausts its candidate modes, it returned only the
last error, which for any dcp > 1 request was the whole-forward gate
("DCP timing requires measured vLLM FPM interpolation") and masked the
op-level reason the user actually hit (kv-head bound, unsupported
model/backend, version slot, data gap). Join the recorded failures so the
surfaced message names each mode and its cause.

Found by driving the predict CLI across the DCP framework/hardware/model
matrix; no behaviour change for single-mode failures.

Full CI on the trusted copy failed only its two public-API contracts:
- crates/tests/public-api pinned ENGINE_SPEC_SCHEMA_VERSION to 25; decode CP
  is 26 (positional dcp_size tails on the attention / MLA / DSA ops).
- compile_engine's stable signature expects cp_size where upstream placed it
  (after fpm_interpolation); the merge had kept this branch's earlier slot.
  Keyword-only, so callers are unaffected.
