feat(vllm): add reproducible FPM inputs and measurement provenance - #15110
Conversation
The per-rank self-benchmark artifact says nothing about the engine that produced it, so two artifacts that differ only by an attention backend, a KV dtype or a quantization kernel are indistinguishable downstream. Capture one engine provenance block at scheduler init and emit it as an optional top-level engine key; schema_version stays 2 and consumers that do not know the key ignore it. Every read is defensive and the whole capture is wrapped, so a provenance gap can never cost a collection its measurements. The DP ranks of one self-benchmark run must come from one engine configuration; a rank that silently ran a different attention backend or KV dtype would be averaged into the same merged artifact. Fail the merge when two ranks that both captured their engine block successfully disagree, excluding the per-rank DP rank and the probe-filled resolution fields, and carry the block into the merged document with the rank cleared. A rank whose capture failed, or that has no engine block while others do, is excluded from the comparison instead of disabling it for every rank, and is recorded in the merged document's engine.capture_errors with one WARNING; when the reference rank itself is the degraded one, the merged block is reseeded from the first rank that captured cleanly. A run where no rank ever captured an engine block is untouched: no engine key, no warning, nothing raised. vLLM picks the attention backend inside the model workers and never writes it back into the engine-core config, so the self-benchmark artifact can only record what was requested; for automatic selection that is null. Ship a one-shot probe to the workers after the benchmark, read the resolved backend names off the attention layers, and record them under engine.resolved in every rank file and in the merged artifact, alongside the worker's DP and TP rank (preferring parallel_config.data_parallel_index over the dense-model data_parallel_rank that vLLM zeroes under DP, and deriving the TP rank from the worker's own global rank rather than ever mislabeling that global rank as the TP rank). The whole path from the RPC call through applying and writing the result is fail-soft end to end: any failure, including a malformed probe result, is recorded as engine.resolution with the exception type named, and never propagates into the launcher or skips worker restore. The FPM publishers bind base + dp_rank and the benchmark synchronizer binds base + dp_size. When that block falls inside /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range, an unrelated outbound connection can take one of the ports first and the bind fails with 'Address already in use' intermittently and only under load. Log one warning at scheduler construction naming the range and the remedy; stay silent where the proc file does not exist. The default base port is unchanged. Consumers that read the ZMQ stream directly had to reverse-engineer the three-frame layout, the meaning of counter_id and the port arithmetic, including the ephemeral-range constraint that makes a bind fail intermittently. Document all four, and document the new optional engine block in the self-benchmark artifact together with the difference between a requested and a resolved attention backend. … tidy the probe messages and docs Final-review fix wave for AIC-1950 (5593e88..268fb4e): one required fix plus the cheap comment/docs minors. - Drop `max_model_len` from `engine.model`: vLLM's `--max-model-len -1` auto-fit resolves it per rank from each rank's own free GPU memory, so it is rank-varying data that can make two clean ranks fail the provenance merge; it already lives per rank at `limits.max_model_len` (mirrors the existing `num_gpu_blocks` exclusion). - Fan out a `UniformTypeKVCacheSpecs` wrapper group's wrapped specs into a `specs` list instead of recording null `dtype`/`head_size`/`num_kv_heads`. - Make the engine-provenance mismatch message total: fall back to naming the top-level key set instead of indexing into a list that can be empty when every key's `.get()` agrees but the two dicts still differ, which previously raised `IndexError` instead of the descriptive `RuntimeError`. - Fix the inverted `prefill_backend` probe comment: vLLM stores an instance on MLA layers, not a class, and add the instance-branch case to its test. - Reword the scheduler's stale forward-reference comment to point at the worker probe that now exists (`worker_factory._attach_engine_resolved`). - Fix the self-benchmark docs example to values the code can actually produce: `LBHNC` KV cache layout, a real `eplb_config` dict shape, and `FlashAttnPrefillBackend`; note the `UniformTypeKVCacheSpecs` fan-out and that the ephemeral-port check runs once per engine-core process. Decouple benchmark prompt content from grid selection and request counters while preserving per-rank diversity and prefix-cache consistency. Record prompt hashes, preparation metadata, and all internal timings before the existing reduction. …eport The marker report stubbed vllm.v1.core.kv_cache_manager so that test_vllm_instrumented_scheduler.py could import KVCacheManager at module level. The vLLM 0.30.0 tests added by #15182 use pytest.importorskip("vllm.v1.core.kv_cache_manager") as their probe for a real vLLM install. With the stub in place that probe passed during the report's stubbed collection, and test_vllm_kv_cache_metadata_compat.py then failed collection on vllm.v1.engine.core, failing pre-commit on the merge with main. Import KVCacheManager inside the realseed_prefix_cache fixture, its only user, and drop the stub, so both new tests are skipped by the report as they are on main. Collection counts for the scheduler, worker-factory and benchmark-points tests are unchanged (326, 156, 19). …t seeds The zero-KV prefill fallback and the fake-decode path interpolated the JSON batch shape, which lists all B lengths, into every slot's content salt, so seeding a batch hashed an O(B)-long string B times: O(B^2) seed work in the untimed injection window (review measurement at batch 1024, context 1: 16.69 ms vs 7.61 ms on main, 7.91 ms with one digest per batch). Hash the shape once per batch with SHA-256 and put the 64-character digest in each slot's salt. The content seed, DP rank, slot index and the content-v1 seed format are unchanged, so prompts stay deterministic per coordinate, rank and slot, and explicit cache and content salts are untouched. For the same coordinates these prompts now draw different token ids than on earlier commits of this branch. A spy on hashlib.sha256 pins one shape digest per batch in both paths. …ifacts After the merged artifact was written, the post-collection worker probe re-read every rank artifact, re-applied its result, and rewrote each rank file and then the merged file: a second full pass over the measured artifacts on the event loop before worker restore and serving registration, outside the RPC timeout. Write the probe result to one small JSON sidecar next to the merged artifact instead (<merged stem>_worker_probe.json, schema dynamo.fpm.benchmark_worker_probe version 1). It holds the merged view and each rank's own view, built in memory with the same _apply_engine_resolved semantics, so a rank's view still never claims another DP rank's observation. After the probe no rank or merged artifact is read or rewritten: they keep their startup engine block, and the merged artifact names the sidecar in a top-level worker_probe_path next to merged_output_path, written only when it has an engine block, so the engine block stays free of per-run paths and the cross-rank identity check cannot see it. The in-memory merged document that get_perf_metrics serves still carries the probe result. A stale sidecar from an earlier run is removed with the stale merged file, and the sidecar records run_id. Probe, sidecar and recording failures stay fail-soft: they are logged, never raised, so the launcher always restores the workers. Docs: the engine provenance section describes the sidecar, and two scheduler comments no longer say the probe fills the artifact. Benchmark mode set vLLM's cudagraph_metrics for the engine's lifetime. After the benchmark vLLM's default stat logger in the launcher kept collecting the per-step CUDA graph dispatch statistics and logging them, and kept them without bound when VLLM_LOG_STATS_INTERVAL<=0 stops Dynamo's periodic do_log_stats. Enable the option only when the engine args do not already have it on, and record that in the benchmark config (cudagraph_metrics_auto_enabled; the scheduler ignores keys BenchmarkConfig does not define). _restore_benchmark_workers, which runs on the success and failure paths before serving registration, now turns an option Dynamo enabled back off in the engine client after the KDA and GC restores: the client's own config flag, and cudagraph_logging on every stat logger (aggregated loggers and per-engine adapters), discarding what they collected. The GC stop still always runs, a failure only logs a WARNING, and an option the user enabled is never touched. The model workers still attach the per-step statistics, which nothing collects any more. The stat loggers are reset before the config flag; each step fails soft. A test pins that the reset runs last, even after a failed step. …workers
The engine client cannot hand vLLM's model workers a Python callable:
AsyncLLM.collective_rpc goes through the engine-core client, whose msgpack
encoder refuses functions unless VLLM_ALLOW_INSECURE_SERIALIZATION=1 (the
existing engine probe records exactly that TypeError in default
deployments). Reach the workers by method name instead, through vLLM's
worker extension mechanism.
Add FpmBenchmarkWorkerExtension (dynamo.vllm.benchmark_worker_extension)
with fpm_disable_cudagraph_metrics, which clears
observability_config.cudagraph_metrics; vLLM's model runner reads it on
every step. Benchmark mode sets --worker-extension-cls to it when it
enables the option and no extension class is configured; the GC policy's
FpmGcWorkerExtension, which replaces it when DYN_FPM_GC_POLICY is set,
inherits the method, and a user's own class is kept. The restore calls
collective_rpc("fpm_disable_cudagraph_metrics") after the engine-client
reset, bounded by CUDAGRAPH_METRICS_RESTORE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS (10 s, inside
the 30 s restore budget), and only logs a WARNING on failure.
The call runs in the restore's finally chain, where the restore's own
wait_for no longer bounds it once it has fired, and collective_rpc's
timeout only bounds the engine core's wait for the workers, so the call
carries its own asyncio.wait_for. The engine-client reset now handles each
stat logger on its own, so one that refuses the write no longer leaves the
rest collecting, and the success line is logged only when every step
worked.
- The worker method reads vllm_config directly; the launcher counts any
reply but {"cudagraph_metrics": False} as not done (WARNING, no INFO).
- Benchmark mode records worker_extension_installed; with a user's own
--worker-extension-cls the restore skips the worker call and logs one
WARNING naming the class.
- The fail-soft excepts that do not re-raise say why.

The post-collection engine probe shipped a Python callable through
AsyncLLM.collective_rpc. The engine-core client encodes RPC arguments with
msgpack and refuses functions unless VLLM_ALLOW_INSECURE_SERIALIZATION=1,
so the probe failed in every default deployment and only ever recorded
probe_failed: TypeError.
Move the probe into FpmBenchmarkWorkerExtension as fpm_engine_probe and
call it as collective_rpc("fpm_engine_probe") under the existing 30 s
bound, which keeps its own asyncio.wait_for; _make_engine_probe is
removed. The method reports the same observations and labels, and the
replies and everything built from them (_worker_probe_responses,
_apply_engine_resolved and the sidecar) are unchanged. It reads vLLM's
config fields directly, so a worker whose config lacks one fails the call
and the launcher records probe_failed instead of the probe guessing a
rank; getattr stays only for what differs per layer type.
Benchmark mode now sets --worker-extension-cls to the extension in every
run without a configured extension class, not only when Dynamo enables
cudagraph_metrics. With a user's own class the launcher sends no probe
call: it records probe_skipped: worker extension not installed (<class>)
in the sidecar and logs one WARNING, using the worker_extension_installed
flag the cudagraph_metrics restore already reads.
- The two excepts that do not re-raise (the per-layer skip and the RPC
guard) say why.
- Docs: the worker probe section says how the probe reaches the workers
and what happens under a user's own --worker-extension-cls.

Merges origin/main at 938d89b. Two main commits conflicted: - 938d89b (#14614), instrumented_scheduler.py class attributes: kept main's _bench_hybrid_live_state next to _bench_random_kda, followed by this branch's six benchmark evidence attributes. - 938d89b (#14614), instrumented_scheduler.py two-step save path: the kept steady sample is main's copy marked kvwarm_steady_sample, as on the median path, and this branch's last_step reduction, raw sample index and benchmark_measurement block still apply to it. The marker stays on the retained FPM and never enters raw_fpms (deep-copied before reduction). - 9ae086b (#14676), test_vllm_worker_factory.py imports: both _register_request_cache_metrics and _restore_benchmark_workers. Main's giant off-by-batch correction records a point at its measured coordinate after every rank has keyed its benchmark_measurement at the declared one, so the merger would reject the artifact with a measurement identity mismatch. The correction now re-keys every rank's evidence to the recorded point. Main's test_save_records_only_the_steady_fpm now allows for the evidence block on the copied sample; one new test covers the re-key on an attention-DP follower, and the evidence test checks where the steady marker goes. This branch's engine provenance and measurement tests come first, then main's FPM worker_id propagation tests (#12545). Main's vLLM 0.31.0 bump deleted test_vllm_kv_cache_metadata_compat.py, which the realseed_prefix_cache fixture's comment named as the importorskip probe that its function-local KVCacheManager import protects. The comment now names test_vllm_dcp_kv_events.py, which still probes vllm.v1.core.kv_cache_manager. No code change for vLLM 0.31.0: the vLLM interfaces this branch uses (collective_rpc by method name, worker extension mixing, cudagraph_metrics, CUDAGraphStat, the stat loggers, the fields the engine probe and the provenance capture read) are unchanged from 0.30.0. Merges origin/main at 0f01da1. Two files conflicted, both resolved by keeping both sides: - test_vllm_instrumented_scheduler.py imports: both sides added import torch and a vllm.v1.kv_cache_interface import. The result is the union: main's kv_cache_utils module import and sha256 (#15110), this branch's SamplingParams, kv_cache_manager, SlidingWindowSpec and Request, and FullAttentionSpec, KVCacheConfig and KVCacheGroupSpec imported once. - environment-variables.mdx, DYN_BENCH_GIANT_KV_REPEATS: this branch rewrote the paragraph (requested count, model-length cap, native and shared-chain reservations, fallback to one sample for fake-injected points), and main (#15110) added that the adjacent steps share one preparation, are not independent benchmark repetitions, and keep their timings in benchmark_measurement.raw_fpms. The paragraph keeps this branch's text with main's two sentences after the median sentence. Main's new DYN_BENCH_CONTENT_SEED entry follows unchanged. instrumented_scheduler.py and backend_args.py merged without conflicts. test_kvwarm_native_grid_numbering_preserves_each_execution runs the real capacity probe and decode dispatch on a stub built with InstrumentedScheduler.__new__. After the merge of main, both paths read state that #15110 added, and the test failed with AttributeError: - the grid-invariants digest now includes _bench_measurement_protocol(), which reads _bench_vocab_size; - _bench_pop_next() opens an eager_shape warmup record for eager replicas, which reads _bench_results. Set both on the stub, as _digest_stub and _benchmark_save_stub already do. No production code changes. #15110 hashes the injected prompts of every benchmark point into benchmark_measurement.prompts, in each admission path: _bench_inject_prefill, _bench_inject_fake_decode and _kvwarm_inject_borrowed. Native exact-context points are admitted by _kvwarm_resume_native, which continues the stage's own prefilled requests and recorded nothing. Every native real-KV row therefore reported prompts.status "unavailable", although its prompts are known and reproducible: the slot's chain text, seeded by the content seed and the DP rank, cut to the injected context. Hash the stage prompts when the requests resume. Each request's num_tokens is its prefill length, the injected context ctx - 1. The admission token is a sampled continuation, which the protocol lists as unobserved. Signed-off-by: Yiming Liu <yimingl@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Summary
FPM self-benchmark results need enough evidence to distinguish input differences, graph dispatch differences, preparation differences, and measurement noise. Previously, prompt construction could depend on request counters or the grid digest, individual decode timings were discarded during reduction, and worker provenance retained only the first RPC reply.
This PR makes benchmark inputs reproducible and preserves input, timing, execution, preparation, and worker evidence for each point and rank. It keeps the existing scheduler wall-time formulas, admission and warmup flow, and retained latency reductions.
Worker probe fix and sidecar (review round 2). Earlier commits of this branch sent the engine probe to the model workers as a Python callable through
collective_rpc; vLLM's engine-core client refuses to serialize a callable unlessVLLM_ALLOW_INSECURE_SERIALIZATION=1, so every real run recordedengine.resolution = "probe_failed: TypeError: ...". The probe is nowFpmBenchmarkWorkerExtension.fpm_engine_probe, a method of a Dynamo worker extension class (dynamo.vllm.benchmark_worker_extension) that benchmark mode installs through--worker-extension-clsunless you set one (theDYN_FPM_GC_POLICYextension inherits it), called by name with one boundedcollective_rpc. Its result no longer rewrites the rank and merged artifacts: it is written once to a sidecar next to the merged artifact (<merged stem>_worker_probe.json, schemadynamo.fpm.benchmark_worker_probeversion 1, holding the merged view and one view per DP rank), the merged artifact carries a top-levelworker_probe_path, and the artifacts keep their startupengineblock withpending_worker_probe. The same extension turns vLLM'scudagraph_metricsback off in the workers before serving when benchmark mode enabled it. With your own--worker-extension-cls, the probe and that reset are skipped, each with one WARNING naming your class, and the sidecar recordsprobe_skipped: ....Changes
DYN_BENCH_CONTENT_SEED(default"0"), workload coordinates, DP rank, and request slot. The batch shape enters each slot's seed as one SHA-256 digest computed once per batch, so seed work is linear in batch size. Keep allocation salts separate. Real-KV chains remain consistent and eager warmup tails remain distinct from measured tails. Real-seed slots with zero KV receive fresh cache namespaces, preventing repeated aligned coordinates from reusing an earlier measured prompt while preserving reproducible token content.schedule_to_outputorinter_output), process-local monotonic endpoints, and local sample/forward indices. A reduced estimate does not inherit graph evidence from an arbitrary constituent sample.cudagraph_metricsoption for self-benchmarks when supported and not already on, and turn it back off before serving registration: in the model workers, on every stat logger of the engine client (dropping the observations collected during the benchmark), and on the client's config. An option the user enabled is left on. Record observed dispatch mode and padded/unpadded token counts from the correspondingModelRunnerOutput.cudagraph_stats. Missing observations remain explicitly unavailable; expected point labels and resolved graph configuration are separate evidence.benchmark_measurement.point_keyto that point, so the merge's identity check accepts the corrected point. These observations add no GPU synchronization, CUDA-event timing, extra warmups, or per-step RPCs. They do not establish complete graph identity, capture-versus-replay history, the attention kernel used by each sample, or equivalent KV/recurrent tensors and execution history. Decode real-KV chain warmup history remains outside the new warmup ledger. A worker RPC may expose only one DP engine; missing DP observations remain unknown. One launch is one observation, and adjacent decode steps are not independent repetitions.

f18206c29, maince45db9c1merged into the approved headeec2ac5cf). The conflicts were import blocks and appended tests, resolved by keeping both sides; no code change was needed for 0.31.0. The newest dynamo-ci image available to the cluster ships vLLM 0.30.0, so both runs below installed vLLM 0.31.0 (torch 2.13.0, CUDA 13.0) into it and kept the image's Dynamo runtime:ce45db9c1:test_vllm_instrumented_scheduler.py360 vs. 285 passed,test_vllm_worker_factory.py229 vs. 90 (pytest-asyncio 1.3.0),test_benchmark_points.py19,test_gc_policy.py10 andtest_vllm_benchmark_worker.py9 on both, andtest_vllm_unit.py183 vs. 163 passed with the same 2 fixture-path failures on both.real_kvpoints with no tracebacks or errors, andengine.versionsrecords vLLM0.31.0. The probe, sidecar and restore results repeat round 2:pending_worker_probein the rank and merged artifacts,worker_probe_pathnaming the sidecar,worker_probefor DP rank 0 (78FLASHINFER_MLA_SPARSEand 21DEEPSEEK_V32_INDEXERlayers,TrtllmRaggedPrefillBackend,FULL_AND_PIECEWISE),worker_probe_partialfor the merged view, and theTurned vLLM cudagraph_metrics off after the self-benchmark (...; stat loggers cleared: 4)line. Every raw sample carries observed graph dispatch; on 0.31.0 all 24 per rank wereFULL.Review round 2 (vLLM 0.30.0; the runs below used the merge commit
4b000b020, and the head differs from it only by one docs sentence):test_vllm_instrumented_scheduler.pyandtest_benchmark_points.py365 passed;test_vllm_worker_factory.py202 passed, with pytest-asyncio 1.3.0 as pinned incontainer/deps/requirements.test.txt;test_vllm_unit.py182 passed, and its other 2 tests fail the same way on main in that package-only checkout (they readtests/serve/fixtures/custom_template.jinjafrom the repo root).dynamo.vllmanddynamo.commonpackages installed over the image's: GLM-5.2 NVFP4, decode, DP4 on one GB200 node, 6 explicit points (batch 1/4/16 x KV 128/4096). All four ranks completed 6/6 points with no tracebacks or errors. The rank and merged artifacts keeppending_worker_probe, and the merged artifact'sworker_probe_pathnames the sidecar. The probe reached the model workers by method name: for DP rank 0 the sidecar records 78FLASHINFER_MLA_SPARSEand 21DEEPSEEK_V32_INDEXERlayers,TrtllmRaggedPrefillBackendandFULL_AND_PIECEWISE(worker_probe); ranks 1-3 areworker_probe_unobservedand the merged view isworker_probe_partial, because vLLM's internal-LB DP client returns only the first engine's reply. Before registration the restore loggedTurned vLLM cudagraph_metrics off after the self-benchmark (model workers: [{'cudagraph_metrics': False}]; stat loggers cleared: 4). The run setsDYN_FPM_GC_POLICY, so both calls went through the GC extension class, which inherits them. Every raw sample carries observed graph dispatch: per rank, the 18 retained steps wereFULLand the 6 admission stepsPIECEWISE.Prompt content changed versus earlier commits of this branch: for the same coordinates, zero-KV prefill and fake-decode prompts (and the global warmup, which uses the same fallback salt) now draw different token ids, because the batch shape enters each slot's seed as a fixed-length digest instead of the full shape string.
content_seedandcontent_identity(coordinate_rank_slot_v1) are unchanged, so artifacts collected on earlier commits of this branch carry the same labels but different prompt hashes for those points and are not content-comparable with new ones there; explicit cache and content salts (fake-prefix pairing, real-seed staging) are unchanged.Earlier rounds (vLLM 0.27.0):
A broader argument-parser run reproduced 60 baseline failures caused by the absent offline model cache. The new graph-metrics argument behavior is covered by the eight passing focused cases above.
No new GPU performance campaign or instrumentation-overhead measurement was performed for the execution-evidence extension. The checks validate evidence capture, preservation, and unchanged timing/reduction logic, not a causal explanation for existing latency outliers.
Earlier Pilot Evidence
A live DEP8 / GB300 / vLLM 0.27.0 pilot exposed the repeated zero-KV cache collision: each rank measured 2,548 of 2,852 iterations and skipped 304 after finding an earlier measured prefix. The follow-up isolates zero-KV cache namespaces. A subsequent full-prefill GPU sweep completed all 2,852/2,852 measurements on each of eight ranks with zero skips. The pilot-only deployment combines this PR with the separate Inkling convolution-state warm-up work and an image-compatible worker-factory backport; this result applies to that frozen combination.
The GPU-complete sweep encountered an AISimulate false rejection of vLLM's offline Hub-ID-to-snapshot-path rewrite. AISimulate #248 corrects that consumer check; CPU-only reassessment recovered native validity and execution evidence while preserving all 217 original files. The fresh bounded prefill ABBA pilot completed all four launches with native/runtime checks passing and zero recorded comparability failures, then stopped at its numerical limits before decode. Full-grid repeats exceeded 5% CV at 199/2,281 coordinates; subset repeats exceeded it at 2/30; full-grid/subset medians disagreed by more than 5% at 3/30 shared coordinates. One individually stable coordinate still differed by 32.35% between arms. This validates the need to keep recorded identity, execution-history equivalence and numerical stability separate. All raw evidence and valid slow observations are preserved; two observations per arm cannot qualify a campaign. Broader recollection remains gated.
Controlled full-grid/subset comparisons remain necessary before treating the two as equivalent measurements. Repetition, comparability, aggregation, and qualification belong to AISimulate #248.
