Slow unzipping on Windows machines.

We've heard comments about long unpacking times in Windows. The following advice is based on using a free utility (7-Zip).

Here are some things you can do to speed this up:

  1. Avoid using the Windows built-in zip utilities by installing 7-Zip (or a similar program). It is significantly faster, supports more archive types, and isn't the cause of inexplicable bugs relating to the built-in zipper.
  2. Don't do anything else while it is unzipping. Anything else that accesses the disk will slow the unzipping down.
  3. Remember not all computers are created equal.
  4. Not all unzipping programs are created equal.
