What does this PR do?

Closes #1263.

Preserve MiniMax H3's official mixed-precision contract under FSDP2. The official checkpoint stores six linear projections in FP32: video/audio patch projections, both time-embedding projections, and video/audio output heads. Before this change the BF16 policy cast them to BF16, along with the floating RoPE positions and timesteps passed into the model.

This revision is narrowed to the H3 model directory. Shared VeOmni modules (torch_parallelize.py, LoRA layers, module_utils.py, safetensor export) are unchanged from main.

This is a numerical-contract repair, not a demonstrated fix for long-run RL instability or exact Actor/rollout parity. Parameter names and shapes are unchanged; previous H3 BF16 forward numerics intentionally change.

Checklist Before Starting

Design & Code Changes

  • MiniMaxH3FP32Linear: FP32 parameters, ambient autocast disabled locally, input cast to the weight dtype. Used for the six official projections; checkpoint keys are unchanged.
  • condition_proj and the AdaLN linears cast their input to their own (FSDP-materialized) weight dtype through a forward pre-hook. The time MLP stays FP32, and AdaLN applies SiLU before casting.
  • MiniMaxH3DiTModel.get_ignore_modules_in_mixed_precision returns (MiniMaxH3FP32Linear,), using the existing FSDP2 precision-exemption hook. MiniMaxH3DiT is added to _no_split_modules because FSDP2 only scans exempt classes inside wrap units; without it the root-level projections are not found. The hook also rejects LoRA on the FP32 projections.
  • MiniMaxH3DiT.forward rejects floating timesteps/positions narrower than FP32 (BF16/FP16), so cast_forward_inputs=true fails loudly instead of silently rounding. FP64 is accepted.
  • Inference row/anchor assembly casts BF16 anchors to the FP32 latent buffers after FP32 predictions promote scheduler latents.

Documented side effects of listing MiniMaxH3DiT as a wrap unit (see docs/examples/minimax_h3.md, "Mixed precision"):

  • With the default reshard and prefetch settings, the condition projection, token refiner and final-layer AdaLN are resharded after forward and gathered again in backward. Manual forward/backward prefetch is enabled. The six FP32 projections stay unsharded between forward and backward (existing exempt-module behavior).
  • A configured mixed_precision.output_dtype also applies at the dit boundary.
  • Modules containing the FP32 projections must not be listed in basic_modules, or they would be wrapped twice.
  • Async activation offload auto-discovery also matches MiniMaxH3DiT; set model.accelerator.offload_config.activation_offload_modules: ["dit.blocks.{*}"] explicitly.
  • LoRA rejection only runs on the FSDP2 path. save_hf_safetensor still exports FP32 tensors as BF16; FP32-preserving export is out of scope here.

API and Usage Example

H3 requires cast_forward_inputs: false. The existing H3 recipe already sets it.

model:
  accelerator:
    fsdp_config:
      mixed_precision:
        param_dtype: bfloat16
        reduce_dtype: float32
        cast_forward_inputs: false

Use the foundation loader's torch_dtype / FSDP policy instead of an explicit whole-model .bfloat16() so the FP32 projections are retained.

Test

Extended the CI-enumerated tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py (GPU/NPU workflows). No new dependency or workflow group.

  • pytest tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py: 51 passed on CPU. This includes four two-rank CPU/Gloo FSDP2 cases (ordinary/LoRA x checkpointing off/on). Through production parallelization they:
    • load tiny safetensors and assert the FSDP unit structure (dit, blocks and the six projections are FSDP units);
    • check that the projections run with FP32 weights and the time embedding stays FP32;
    • run single-sample, one-element-list and mixed FL2VA/Ref2VA packed training;
    • compare predictions and gradients to same-weight serial computation, and perform a real AdamW update;
    • check that cast_forward_inputs=true is rejected.
  • Other new tests cover the loader keeping the FP32 projections for BF16/FP16, AdaLN SiLU-before-cast, BF16/FP16 input rejection with FP64 accepted, LoRA-on-projection rejection, and two-step inference with BF16 first-frame/reference anchors.
  • make quality (ruff 0.12.2) passed.
  • Not validated: CUDA/NPU execution, official full-weight output/log-prob parity, convergence and full Trainer save/resume.

Reproducible CPU command:

CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES='' python -m pytest -q tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py

Environment: Python 3.12.10, Torch 2.11.0+cu130, Transformers 5.16.1, Diffusers 0.37.0.

Checklist Before Submitting

  • Read the Contribute Guide and relevant development/review constraints.
  • Applied make quality.
  • Updated H3 precision documentation.
  • No tasks/ scripts were moved or renamed.
  • Extended CI-enumerated tests; hardware validation gaps are stated above.
  • AI assistance was used for implementation, tests and this draft; the human submitter must review the change and evidence before marking Ready.

Walkthrough

MiniMax H3 now uses FP32 for designated projections under FSDP2 mixed precision and rejects timestep or image-position inputs below FP32. The change also updates activation offload target discovery, inference tensor assignments, tests, and documentation.

Changes: MiniMax H3 precision and activation offload

Layer / File(s) Summary
FP32 projections and input precision
veomni/models/diffusers/minimax_h3/minimax_h3_core/minimax_h3_dit.py, veomni/models/diffusers/minimax_h3/minimax_h3_transformer/modeling_minimax_h3_transformer.py
Selected time, patch, and output projections use FP32 linear layers. The model updates embedding dtype handling, assigns checkpoint boundaries to DiT blocks, and rejects timesteps or image positions below FP32.
FSDP2 and activation offload integration
veomni/models/diffusers/minimax_h3/minimax_h3_transformer/modeling_minimax_h3_transformer.py, veomni/distributed/async_offload.py, veomni/arguments/arguments_types.py, veomni/distributed/torch_parallelize.py, .agents/knowledge/constraints.md, docs/key_features/async_activate_offload.md, docs/key_features/async_activation_offload_targets.md, docs/index.md
The H3 model sets separate FSDP2 wrapping and activation offload targets. Automatic offload discovery uses _activation_offload_target_classes when defined, otherwise _no_split_modules; explicit patterns take precedence.
Inference, tests, and H3 documentation
veomni/models/diffusers/minimax_h3/inference.py, tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py, docs/examples/minimax_h3.md
Inference assignments convert rows and anchors to the destination device and dtype. Tests cover projection precision, distributed FSDP2 behavior, input checks, and BF16-anchor inference. The H3 documentation describes precision and configuration behavior.

The Stage 2 example needs the FP32-input setting, and existing checkpoint tests are likely to fail in GPU and NPU unit suites. Resolve both before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 88b91

The inspected changes enforce precision requirements without establishing a new permission boundary or expanded access to sensitive resources. Remaining uncertainty concerns recovery behavior and deployment-level exposure.

Retained concerns

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported impact scope is H3 training and inference jobs using the changed projection and wrapping policies, including their worker memory, parameters, and predictions. The inspected dependency path does not establish propagation to other model families or increased tenant, credential, or service authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The core rejects already-rounded floating metadata before subsequent forward processing, and the wrapper rejects unsupported FP32-projection LoRA configurations before the FSDP wrapping loop. These are numerical-contract controls, not authentication or authorization controls; the LoRA check is specific to paths invoking the FSDP2 hook.

Explanation

[#1263] Requirement 1, FP32 projections: In minimax_h3_dit.py, video_patch_proj, audio_patch_proj, time_embedder.proj_in, time_embedder.proj_out, final_layer.video_out and final_layer.audio_out are MiniMaxH3FP32Linear. Its __init__ passes dtype=torch.float32. Its forward disables autocast and casts input to weight.dtype. MiniMaxH3DiTModel.get_ignore_modules_in_mixed_precision() returns (MiniMaxH3FP32Linear,), so FSDP2 does not cast these parameters to BF16. MiniMaxH3DiT is added to _no_split_modules, so the root-level projections are scanned. The time MLP computes t_freq in FP32 and keeps proj_in FP32. condition_proj and the AdaLN linears cast their input to their own weight dtype through a forward pre-hook. Requirement 2, timesteps and positions: MiniMaxH3DiT.forward raises ValueError when unique_timesteps or img_position_ids is floating and narrower than 4 bytes. FP64 passes. This makes cast_forward_inputs=true fail loudly, which the issue allows. The changes since the previous review (removal of the dtype argument from the time embedder, removal of the BF16 cast in _embed, and MiniMaxH3DiTBlock as a GradientCheckpointingLayer) do not affect either requirement. The 51 CPU tests, including two-rank Gloo FSDP2 cases, are cited by the PR. I did not run the tests. CUDA/NPU execution and official-weight parity are not validated, as the PR states; the issue does not require them.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changes outside veomni/models/diffusers/minimax_h3/ and the H3 test file: (1) veomni/distributed/async_offload.py adds an optional _activation_offload_target_classes lookup and renames the auto-discovery helper. Without this lookup, adding MiniMaxH3DiT to _no_split_modules would make auto-discovery select the whole DiT as an offload target. H3 sets the attribute to ["MiniMaxH3DiTBlock"]. Models without the attribute keep the old behavior. This change supports #1263. (2) veomni/arguments/arguments_types.py and the async offload docs describe the same lookup. (3) torch_parallelize.py changes one comment only. (4) .agents/knowledge/constraints.md and docs/index.md record the H3 checkpoint-boundary constraint and link the new doc. These changes connect to the H3 wrapping change. No unrelated change was found. Description inaccuracy: the PR text says shared modules (torch_parallelize.py, LoRA layers, module_utils.py, safetensor export) are unchanged from main. The diff shows async_offload.py and torch_parallelize.py changed. This statement is inaccurate, but it does not make the code change unrelated. This assessment does not rely on that statement. Safetensor export and LoRA layers show no changes in the reviewed diff for the shared-module paths named in the description.

Keep the six official FP32 projections (video/audio patch, time MLP,
video/audio output) in an H3 FP32 linear type that FSDP2 shards without
parameter casting. List MiniMaxH3DiT in _no_split_modules so FSDP2 finds
the root-level projections. Cast condition and AdaLN inputs to their
weight dtype, apply SiLU before the AdaLN cast, and reject timesteps or
positions already cast below FP32. Shared VeOmni modules are unchanged.

Validation: tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py 51 passed on CPU,
including two-rank Gloo FSDP2 cases; make quality passed. CUDA and
official-model parity remain unvalidated.

Use the scheduler timestep in the multistep model call.

The loop updates the latents with different scheduler timesteps, but model_fn_minimax_h3 receives 0.5 for both modalities on every iteration. This leaves the time embedder on one timestep and does not cover the per-step timestep flow used by MiniMaxH3Pipeline.__call__. Use the scheduler-derived value for each iteration.

Merge main 62beaef, which landed the CFG-calibrated Ref2VA training
(ByteDance-Seed#1258), the Ulysses gradient scaling (ByteDance-Seed#1281) and the Flux SP fix
(ByteDance-Seed#1248). Only the DiT wrapper import conflicted: keep the official FP32
projection import alongside main's CFG objective import. Every other
file auto-merged, and both sides' changes are preserved:

- the six FP32 projections, the FP32 time MLP, the AdaLN cast order and
  the rejection of FP32-rounded timesteps/positions
- the CFG negative branch, the SP gradient compensation and the async
  all-to-all loop reset

Validation: tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py and
tests/parallel/ulysses/test_all_gather.py pass 118 and skip 7 on
CPU/Gloo; make quality passes. A BF16 CFG probe on the merged tree
matches serial and packed loss and gradients to 6.2e-4 relative error
with the FP32 islands preserved. CFG under FSDP2/BF16 and the
accelerator-only kernel paths are still unverified here.

Pass the scheduler timestep to model_fn_minimax_h3 instead of the constant 0.5.

The loop steps the scheduler over scheduler.timesteps[:2], but each call passes t_video=0.5, t_audio=0.5. As a result, the "multistep" test runs the DiT twice at the same noise level. The test does not cover the timestep values that real inference produces. MiniMaxH3Pipeline.__call__ derives the timestep as 1.0 - sigma. Use the same formula here.

The two-step loop passed a constant 0.5 to model_fn_minimax_h3, so the
time embedder saw one noise level across both steps and the test never
exercised the per-step timestep flow MiniMaxH3Pipeline.__call__ uses.
Derive t_video/t_audio from the scheduler as 1.0 - sigma, the same
formula inference uses (inference.py:525), and keep stepping the
scheduler with its own timestep.

Validation: tests/models/test_minimax_h3_packing.py passes 104 on CPU;

[P2] Adding the parent here also makes async activation offload select it when activation_offload_modules is empty. With offload and gradient checkpointing enabled, a two-rank FSDP2 run fails on the first forward with a saved-tensor pack-hook error. Restricting offload to the original block targets passes. Please separate offload targets from FSDP wrapping targets.

Set `mixed_precision.cast_forward_inputs=false`; H3 rejects timesteps or
positions already cast below FP32. FSDP2 parallelization rejects LoRA on the six
FP32 projections; other paths do not check. `save_hf_safetensor` exports still
convert FP32 tensors, including these projections, to BF16.

Add cast_forward_inputs: false to the Stage 2 example.

The shipped H3 training configurations already set this option. Only the Stage 2 example remains inconsistent with the documented H3 requirement.

Update the Stage 2 example’s mixed_precision configuration to set
cast_forward_inputs to false, matching the shipped H3 training configurations
and preserving FP32 forward inputs.

[P2] Moving checkpoint ownership to the blocks breaks two existing tests in tests/distributed/test_gradient_checkpointing.py: one requires dit.gradient_checkpointing, and the other expects container binding counts and calls dit._gradient_checkpointing_func. Both accelerator CI suites select this file. Update these tests to verify the new block-owned checkpoint markers and policy entry points.
