[docs] chore: Complete the Missing Feature Documentation - #1299
Validation results (training curves, eval metrics) for changes not covered by CI.
State which of the three applies: extended an existing CI-enumerated test, added a new test and wired it into the CI workflow that owns its path (a unit-test workflow, or gpu_e2e_test.yml / npu_e2e_test.yml for e2e), or no test needed (with the reason).
API and Usage Example
Show API changes and usage examples if applicable.
Design & Code Changes
High-level design description and specific change list.
If tasks/ training scripts were moved or renamed: updated docs/ examples and verified python3 scripts/ci/check_doc_task_paths.py passes (also enforced by the Check doc task paths CI workflow)
Tests: extended an existing CI-enumerated test, or added a new test and wired it into gpu_unit_tests.yml (and npu_unit_tests.yml where applicable), or explained in Test why none is needed. Note that CI enumerates test files individually — a new file outside tests/data/ and tests/ops/ does not run until it is listed. See .agents/knowledge/testing.md.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Added Key Features guides for activation offload, MoE router monitoring, channel loss, and asynchronous DCP checkpoint saving.
Expanded the Key Features navigation to include these topics.
The guides describe configuration options, operating behavior, and usage examples, including how activation offload interacts with gradient checkpointing, how channel metrics are attributed and aggregated, what router monitoring measures, and which checkpoint-saving tasks can overlap with training.
Included limitations and caveats, such as offload not guaranteeing performance or memory gains and asynchronous save completion requiring more than checkpoint directory creation.
Adds documentation for activation offload, MoE router monitoring, Channel Loss, and asynchronous DCP checkpoint saving. The documentation index links to all four pages.
ByteDance-Seed/VeOmni#1006: Extends Channel Loss metrics and changes its callback and observer behavior. This PR documents the same feature contract.
ByteDance-Seed/VeOmni#1260: Changes activation-offload target discovery and configuration behavior. This PR documents activation offload and target selection.
ByteDance-Seed/VeOmni#1276: Changes Channel Loss lifecycle handling, callback ordering, metadata, and cache-release configuration. This PR documents Channel Loss behavior and constraints.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in docs/index.md: The Key Features toctree adds links to the activation offload, MoE router monitoring, channel loss, and DCP async save documentation pages.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/key_features/activation_offload.md: Adds documentation explaining that activation offload moves selected saved tensors to host memory for restoration during backward, trading host memory and transfers for accelerator capacity without guaranteeing higher throughput. It distinguishes synchronous transfers from asynchronous stream-based prefetching, explains checkpointing interactions and implementation-specific tensor selection and retention behavior, and documents configuration fields, defaults, validation constraints, and module-path matching. Provides mutually exclusive synchronous and asynchronous configuration fragments and a procedure for checking startup logs and comparing runs.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/key_features/channel_loss.md: Adds an overview of Channel Loss and explains how source identities and sequence boundaries are retained through packing to attribute valid-token CE by source.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/key_features/channel_loss.md: Defines per-source mean CE, weighted contribution, and token-count metrics; gives a calculation example and states that zero-token sources emit no metrics. The documented weighted contributions use the total successfully recorded token count and need not match the trainer’s returned loss.

Explanation
The title "[docs] chore: Complete the Missing Feature Documentation" fits the changeset. The PR adds four new feature documentation pages (activation offload, channel loss, DCP async save, MoE router monitor) and updates the docs navigation in docs/index.md. The title names the docs scope and the feature-documentation goal. It does not name the specific features. The "chore:" prefix is a minor mismatch because the change adds documentation rather than maintenance work. The PR objectives also repeat the title and do not list the files, so the title is not vague.

On unsampled steps, ChannelLossCallback.on_step_begin returns after optional strict validation. It does not remove the source ID, source name, or extra_strip_keys entries. The common trainer then forwards the unchanged micro_batch to the model. Update this sentence to describe removal only on sampled steps, or implement metadata removal before every forward.

Please distinguish reentrant and non-reentrant checkpointing here. With enable_reentrant: false (as in the example), PyTorch's recomputation hook overrides the outer offload hook, so activation_gpu_limit does not control retained activations inside checkpoint recomputation.

Weights and optimizer saves now have independent futures and Gloo groups and can overlap. A new save waits only for the previous save in the same slot. Please update the single-slot description.

[P2] With enable_reentrant: false in the example, PyTorch's inner _recomputation_hook overrides the outer offload hook, so activation_gpu_limit does not control saved tensors inside checkpoint recomputation. This makes the suggested memory tuning ineffective there. Split this row into reentrant and non-reentrant cases and explain that limitation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P2] The new non-reentrant row correctly explains that _recomputation_hook takes precedence, and the example now warns that activation_gpu_limit cannot tune that recomputation. This resolves the incorrect memory-tuning guidance.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P3] Weights and optimizer writes can remain pending together: execute_save() tracks a future and Gloo group per slot and waits only for that slot's previous write. The single-slot description understates concurrent checkpoint I/O and memory use. Describe one pending save per slot and update the process-group paragraph accordingly.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P3] The revised section now documents independent ckpt and optimizer futures/Gloo groups and waits only for the previous write in the same slot, matching execute_save(). The single-slot documentation issue is fixed.

Remove the model_state: false marker exception.
veomni/checkpoint/layout.py always adds the weights .metadata path in dcp_markers(). The discovery code does not check model_state. A manifest with model_state: false still requires the model marker, so this recovery guidance is incorrect. Update the documentation or change the discovery implementation.

[docs] docs: Complete the Missing Feature Documentation
[docs] chore: Complete the Missing Feature Documentation
Nov 3, 2026
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reviewed against the current implementation on main (commit 7ea15ed10 and the feature code paths). All four features already exist in the repo, so this is a documentation PR; the technical descriptions are mostly accurate, and the reentrant / non-reentrant checkpointing table and the two-slot async-save description are genuinely new and correct.
Blocking items are structural rather than factual:
Merge direction on activation offload. docs/key_features/async_activate_offload.md already exists on main (added by #1234). Async offload is one mode of activation offload, so that page's content should move into this PR's activation_offload.md, not the other way round. Inline comments below.
dcp_async_save.md is correct that scheduler state now lives in the model's per-rank extra_state, which makes docs/usage/checkpoint.md provably stale (lr_scheduler.pt at lines 14, 32, 88, 193, 214). Please fix that page in the same PR rather than landing two contradicting documents.
Two of the remaining CodeRabbit findings are false positives; comments below say why, so they can be answered rather than applied.
All four new pages are missing the trailing newline, and dcp_async_save.md:12 is still a sentence fragment.
MoERouterMonitorCallback is still absent from the Built-in Callbacks list in docs/usage/trainer.md:144-152, where ChannelLossCallback is listed. Worth adding while this PR is touching feature docs.
Nothing here needs a test; the docs build and check_pr_lint pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Merge direction: this page should absorb docs/key_features/async_activate_offload.md (already on main, added by #1234), not the reverse. Async offload is one mode of activation offload, so the general page is the right home, and the 275 lines of async-only material on that page (apply_async_activation_offload, async_save_on_cpu, SwapTensor lifecycle, OffloadManager ownership, per-instance __call__ patching, prefetch, the Wan caveat) belong under an async section here.
Concretely: move that content into this file, delete docs/key_features/async_activate_offload.md, and drop its toctree entry at docs/index.md:90. Keeping both pages leaves two Key Features entries covering the same enable_activation / enable_async_activation switch pair, and readers have no way to tell which is authoritative.
The reentrant / non-reentrant table at lines 76-80 is the one thing that page does not have; it is the most valuable part of this PR and should survive the merge.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This adds a second Key Features entry for a subject the toctree already covers: key_features/async_activate_offload.md is listed on main at this exact spot (added by #1234) and documents the same model.accelerator.offload_config fields. Once that page's content is folded into activation_offload.md, drop this line so only one entry remains.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This sentence is correct: #1189 removed _save_lr_scheduler, and ModelCheckpointManager._extra_state now folds lr_scheduler into the dict written to extra_state/extra_state_rank_{R}.pt.
That correctness is what makes the rest of this PR incomplete, though: docs/usage/checkpoint.md still documents model/**/lr_scheduler.pt as a rank-0 file at lines 14, 32, 88, 193 and 214 of that page. Landing this without fixing it leaves two pages contradicting each other, and users will go looking for a file nothing writes any more. Please fix that page here.
Follow-ups from the same change, either in this PR or as a separate issue:
layout.lr_scheduler_path() and LR_SCHEDULER_FILENAME (veomni/checkpoint/layout.py:45, :93-95) have no callers left in the tree; they are dead code now.
The module docstring at veomni/models/checkpoint/manager.py:24-25 still says the checkpointer "pickles state_dict as a single lr_scheduler.pt beside the two DCP directories", which is the same stale claim.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Still a sentence fragment after the previous round (CodeRabbit flagged this twice, most recently in #4385923742): "The repository's pinned hardware / dependencies; see ..." has no verb and states no action.
Suggested rewrite: "Install the repository's pinned dependencies before running any recipe; see Ascend installation and trainer usage."
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Please do not apply CodeRabbit's suggestion (#4385923757) here. The text as written matches the implementation, and the reviewer's claim that discovery ignores model_state is wrong for this revision.
checkpoint_is_complete returns True as soon as manifest.get("model_state", True) is falsy, before it ever calls dcp_markers (veomni/checkpoint/layout.py:256-260). write_manifest uses model_state=False precisely for steps that carry no model half at all, e.g. the frozen offline_embedding flow (same file, lines 144-163). So "a manifest with model_state: false requires no model markers" is accurate; the following sentence about the optimizer marker in an existing optimizer directory is the branch that dcp_markers actually implements (lines 231-237).
A one-line reply on the thread explaining this is better than an edit that would make the page wrong.
| `activation_gpu_limit` | `0.0` | Synchronous retained-activation threshold, in units of 1,024³ bytes. Use a non-negative value. Does not tune async mode. |
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
activation_gpu_limit is not validated anywhere. Unlike activation_offload_host_cache_limit_gb, which gets finite, non-negative and upper-bound checks in OffloadConfig.__post_init__ (veomni/arguments/arguments_types.py:759-770), this field has no __post_init__ check at all.
A negative value flows straight into custom_save_on_cpu and makes the self.cur_gpu_ram_in_mb < gpu_limit_in_gb * 1024 test false for every tensor (veomni/distributed/offloading.py:42), which silently means "offload everything". "Use a non-negative value" here reads like an enforced constraint; either soften it to state that out-of-range values are not rejected, or add the same validation the sibling field has. Silent reinterpretation of a nonsensical value is the worse of the two.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The caption does not match what this paragraph promises. _accumulate_start_step is initialised to 0, and get_load_matrix stores _last_step_range = (self._accumulate_start_step, current_step) before bumping it (veomni/utils/moe_monitor.py:257-260 and :360-362). The callback then captions the image with those two numbers (veomni/trainer/callbacks/trace_callback.py:113-114).
So with interval: 100 on a run from scratch, the first heatmap is captioned "Steps 0-100", not "1-100". Either document the caption as 0-100 (e.g. "covers steps 1-100, captioned 0-100"), or change _accumulate_start_step to start at 1 and keep this text. As written, someone comparing the log line to the W&B image will think they are looking at a different report.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
"A registered layer without observations has a zero row" only holds while some other layer recorded something in the window. If the whole window is empty, _stack_and_reduce returns an empty tensor (veomni/utils/moe_monitor.py:331-333), get_load_matrix returns it early without touching the step range (:355-357), and compute_metrics returns {} (:406-408). Nothing is published at all in that case.
That distinction matters for interval values shorter than a full routing warmup and for routing-gated layers: it is the difference between "expect a row of -1s" and "expect no report and a caption that never advances". A one-line caveat here would save someone waiting for a first heatmap that never arrives.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
"all ranks must execute metric computation" is correct, but it understates the cost. The callback calls compute_metrics(current_step=state.global_step) on every rank without passing format_only_on (veomni/trainer/callbacks/trace_callback.py:104), so every rank also runs build_heatmap_image (veomni/utils/moe_monitor.py:415), i.e. a matplotlib figure plus a PNG encode, on every report.
Either document that non-logging ranks build and discard the image too, or pass format_only_on=args.train.global_rank == 0 in the callback so only rank 0 formats while all ranks still do the collective and the reset. The second is a two-line change and makes this paragraph's advice cheap to follow.
| `train.moe_load_balance_monitor_interval` | `0` | Disabled at zero; the callback also disables for negative values. Use a positive integer N to report every N optimizer steps. |
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Two constraints are missing from this table that users will hit immediately:
OmniTrainer rejects this feature outright: omni_arguments_types.py:920-922 asserts train.moe_load_balance_monitor_interval <= 0 with "OmniTrainer does not support the MoE router monitor". Since this page's example is a plain MoE recipe, one sentence saying SeedOmni runs cannot use it is worth having.
Negative values are not rejected either, only ignored (veomni/trainer/callbacks/trace_callback.py:48-50), so "the callback also disables for negative values" is fine but is worth stating as "silently ignored", not as validation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P3] The first report is captioned Steps 0-100, because _accumulate_start_step starts at 0, even though its observations cover steps 1-100. Document that initial caption explicitly so readers do not mistake the expected W&B output for a different reporting window.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P3] Before any router has recorded data, _stack_and_reduce() returns an empty matrix and compute_metrics() returns {}, so no heatmap or violation metrics are published. Add this initial no-observation case alongside the zero-row explanation; otherwise users may interpret expected missing reports as a logging failure.
