Description

Follow-ups to the changes merged on 2026-09-22 (#2623, #2624, #2626, #2627, #2634, #2640, #2636, #2637, #2638, #2639, #2641), one commit per item, from the reviews those PRs merged without. Every live fact below is the reviewer's observation quoted from the write-up; none of this was run against a cluster.

1. Kimi-K3 media stay on the router path (from #2623)

With the opt-in: placement moves to the worker (smg_mm_processing_total{model="kimi-k3-nvfp4",mode="worker",reason="auto_uniform"}) and the request fails 500 start_generation_failed: Failed to start generation: Failed to apply prompt replacement for mm_items['image'][0].

vLLM serves KimiK3ForConditionalGeneration from its kimi_k3 package, whose prompt updates target hf_config.image_placeholder = <|kimi_image_placeholder|> (id 163838) and never the gateway's <|media_pad|> anchor (media_placeholder_token_id, id 163605). The worker_expandable override and its parity-script entry are gone; the trait default restores router-side processing (prompt_tokens 463, mode="router",reason="model_not_opted_in" expected). GLM-5.3-Flash is untouched. Do not re-add the one-liner: the correct K3 design is a separate PR.

2. VideoMediaIO import and the frame budget (from #2624)

vllm.multimodal.video VideoMediaIO: absent / vllm.multimodal.media VideoMediaIO: present

The default was never found, so with no explicit num_frames the budget was written in its place, which for a budget above vLLM's 32 raised sampling. vllm_default_video_frames imports from vllm.multimodal.media (the except Exception fallback stays); with the default unknown and nothing set, clamp_video_frames leaves sampling untouched and logs one WARNING. The construction-test stub registers vllm.multimodal.media / .media.video, so the test now exercises the production import; a new test covers the unknown-default case with num_frames left absent.

3. Proto floor, servicer version, field tests (from #2626)

grpc_servicer/pyproject.toml:7 is still version = "0.12.0" and :11 still "smg-grpc-proto>=0.4.20" … grep -rn mm_processor_source grpc_servicer/tests is empty

smg-grpc-proto>=0.4.21 with the annotated comment (0.4.21 is the first release with both GetServerInfoResponse.mm_processor_source (18) and GenerateComplete.media_identity (15): #2627 did not bump, git log -- crates/grpc_client/proto/vllm_engine.proto), servicer 0.13.0. Both descriptor probes are gone (GetServerInfo sets mm_processor_source whenever a processor is advertised; _complete_response sets media_identity whenever one was built; media_identity_supported() deleted; the router-side WARN for an old servicer stays). test_media_refs_proto_fields.py covers fields 18 and 15 (number, default, round trip); a servicer test asserts GetServerInfo(...).mm_processor_source == "flag" / "env" (vLLM lane). Also from that review: a blank flag or env value (--mm-redis-url "", SMG_VLLM_MM_PROCESSOR=" ") is unset, consistently; client-visible strings lead with --mm-processor; the sidecar's --mm-sidecar-timeout-ms applied to nothing (each job carries its deadline_ms), so it is removed together with the README claim built on it. Kept on purpose: e2e_test/infra/worker.py still sets SMG_VLLM_MM_PROCESSOR. The upstream launcher (vllm/entrypoints/launchers/grpc_server.py on vLLM main, checked 2026-09-23) has no --mm-* flags yet, so the e2e deprecation line stays until the launcher change lands; that also means env support cannot end in the next minor release before it does.

4. Guarded identity build (from #2627)

build_media_identity … can raise on shapes it did not anticipate … Any of these turns a request the engine already served into an error to the client.

The call is wrapped: a failure logs Request %s: media identity not built (%s); the decode leg will reprocess the media and the leg answers without an identity. Test in test_vllm_pd_media_identity.py (vLLM lane): build_media_identity raises, the request still completes.

5. Both video timing names (from #2627)

The name second_per_grid_ts appears in this repository only there and in the router-side VLLM_MROPE_GRID_KEYS … while every processor and registry emits video_second_per_grid

Verified in vLLM main: the Qwen-VL processors (qwen2_5_vl.py, qwen3_vl.py) use second_per_grid_ts, the Qwen-Omni family (qwen2_5_omni_thinker.py, qwen3_omni_moe_thinker.py) and this gateway's processors video_second_per_grid. GRID_KEYS and VLLM_MROPE_GRID_KEYS carry both, each naming the two families and the other list; a video case per spelling in test_vllm_media_identity.py, and the router's clone_without_mm_pixels test keeps both.

6. Capability probe and decode-pool selection (from #2640)

a ValueError from MULTIMODAL_REGISTRY.supports_multimodal_inputs is mapped to False … takes a healthy vision decode worker out of service for every PD image request, with no retry to a capable worker.

Servicer: --language-model-only is read off the config before any probe; then any registry probe failure, ValueError included, means "assume multimodal" (the engine rejects what it truly cannot take), warned once per architecture with the exception. With enable_mm_embeds on, "no pixels" is concluded only when every modality the model's processor supports (per the registry's get_supported_mm_limits) has a limit of 0: a zero on one modality of a model that supports others is a limit, not a missing tower, and an unknown supported set assumes the tower. Router: for a multimodal request (payload or references, on retries too via WireConstraint::requires_vision), select_pd_pair leaves a --language-model-only decode worker out while a vision-capable one can pair (an open prefill with an open vision-capable partner on its runtime, read from the pair index); with none the pool is used as it is and dispatch names the incompatibility as before. EPD selection is unchanged. Also: apply_media_identity applies whole or not at all (empty prompt_token_ids, or a leg whose input is not tokenized, leave the references in place, with a WARN); the refs.rs gate comment no longer says both legs process the references; the doc blocks in proto_wrapper.rs, request_execution.rs and mm_salt.py are trimmed.

7. z.ai profile (from #2634)

GLM53_MARKERS … misses ids the multimodal registry treats as the same family: glm-5-next, glm5-next, and dash-spelled ids like glm-5-3-flash

The markers now match the registry's family (GLM-5.3, GLM-5-Next, dash spellings; GLM-5-Next's thinking contract is taken from the registry's family grouping, not separately recorded). The other GLM generations take the documented effort set and reject the rest (turbo → 400). The budget gate is ProviderProfile::enforces_output_budget(); a max_completion_tokens case joins its tests; the module header is trimmed to kimi.rs style. file_url decision: refused at ingress on every backend, deliberately: the vendor fetches the file itself and no self-hosted engine does, and validation runs before the backend is known; a pass-through for an upstream z.ai proxy would need the backend at validation time. .bmp: encoded in the registry: ModelProcessorSpec::rejected_image_formats (default none; Glm53FlashSpec → Bmp), checked when the media plan is prepared from the bytes (inline, or decoded from a base64 data URL, before the client's media type is believed), the media type in any case, or the URL path's extension → 400 invalid_multimodal_request. An extension-less URL that serves BMP bytes is not caught (the decoder handles BMP), which is the vendor's own limit too.

8. #2636, #2637, #2638

crates/external_router/src/openai/chat.rs:86 (to_value(&body)) and crates/external_router/src/gemini/steps/request_building.rs:40 still widen, so a BYOK upstream (OpenAI, z.ai) receives "top_p":0.949999988079071

openai_protocol::common::to_value_exact (serialize with the writer, reparse) is shared; both external paths use it, the gateway's request_to_value keeps its pre-sized buffer and documents that it is the same thing. Its test asserts to_value does widen and to_value_exact does not. Only typed f32 fields are exact this way: numbers kept as Value (other, nested values) normalize at parse (1e2 → 100.0, -0 → -0.0), stated in the doc.

model_gateway/src/routers/gateway.rs:517-523 answers /v1/messages/count_tokens for an unknown model with 501

Now the NO_ROUTER 404 with the same body as every other route (Anthropic SDKs read 501 as "endpoint unsupported"); the route is in the generated OpenAPI spec (countMessageTokens, verified in a generated smg-openapi.yaml); x-api-key is on the CORS allow-list; the PD router tests' four 5 s round-trip timeouts are a 60 s ROUND_TRIP_GUARD (a hang guard, not a budget).

Every engine metric on /engine_metrics changes name … The blanket restore also lets a colon in a label name (illegal) through

Colons are restored in metric names and label values only; in a label name the escape becomes _ as the old sanitizer did, via sanitize_label_names on the parsed exposition (test: model:name → model_name, the metric keeps vllm:); names that would collide once sanitized drop that family with a warning rather than render an invalid page. Release notes entry for the next release (the notes are written on the GitHub release, so it is here for the release author):

Breaking (/engine_metrics): engine metric names and label values now keep their colons exactly as the engines export them (sglang_token_usage → sglang:token_usage, vllm_* → vllm:*, model_name="org/model_v1" → "org/model:v1"). Dashboards and alerts that matched the underscored names need updating. Label names are still sanitized. Authors: #2636 (metrics) and #2638 (count_tokens) landed without DCO sign-off; this PR's commits are signed.

9. #2639 and #2641 hardening

load_guards.remove(0) assumes index 0 is the prefill guard, decided 400 lines earlier

A typed PdLoadGuards { prefill, decode } replaces the vector on the dual-dispatch path (the sequential path takes into_vec()).

the new prefill.record_outcome(502) on a prefill body error races with the attempt's record_outcome(200) at :690

On the early-commit path the drain alone records the prefill outcome, once the body is known, with Metrics::record_worker_error alongside; the attempt records only the decode (PrefillOutcome::Drained). The race is real for any failure threshold above one: a success recorded after the drain's failure resets consecutive_failures, so a prefill whose body keeps failing never tripped its breaker. Unit test a_drained_prefill_outcome_is_not_overwritten_by_the_attempt_status (threshold 2: Drained trips, FromStatus does not). A network test for the fast-failure ordering was tried and dropped: hyper resets the connection when a body errors right after the head, so the head fails and the breaker opens at the head stage instead, and the ordering cannot be pinned from outside.

Behaviour to document from #2639: the prefill load guard is released when the prefill body drains instead of when the client's stream ends, so prefill workers report lower load for streaming PD traffic (shifts least_load / power_of_two placement), and a client disconnect during prefill no longer cancels the prefill drain. Every streaming /v1/responses and /v1/messages request takes the early-commit branch (return_logprob is false there); stream_messages_commits_on_the_decode_head now covers it.

duplicate top-level keys ({"model":"a",…,"model":"b"}) rewrite only the first occurrence while Python's json takes the last

RawBody's visitor keeps one entry per key as a Value does (last value, first position), so the invariant's precondition is enforced rather than documented; insert of the value already present leaves the body unmutated (the fast path for the prefill leg's stream:false works again); a non-object body reports request body must be a JSON object (a syntax error keeps serde's text); adversarial_bodies_survive_the_pd_edits runs the PD edits over duplicate keys, a è escape and raw UTF-8 keys, 1e308, -0.0, 1e2, 2^53+1, u64::MAX, an empty key and pre-existing kv_transfer_params/bootstrap_room/data_parallel_rank, asserting the same fields as the Value oracle with every untouched number kept verbatim. Semantic change from #2641 to state: a worker that mutates requests no longer takes the Value path unless uses_builtin_prepare_request() opts in.

Test Plan

Each item's test was written first and watched fail (or a mutation of the fix was checked to fail it) before the fix. Whole branch, on this machine (no cluster, no vLLM, no OpenCV):

  • cargo test -p llm-multimodal kimi_k3, cargo test -p smg --lib proto_wrapper, cargo test -p smg --lib request_execution, cargo test -p smg --lib worker_selection, cargo test -p openai-protocol profile, cargo test -p smg-external-router --lib, cargo test -p smg --test metrics_aggregator_test, cargo test -p smg --lib request_body, cargo test -p smg --lib pd_router: all green (counts below).
  • Full crates: llm-multimodal 561 passed (11 suites), openai-protocol 349 passed (5 suites), smg-external-router 205 passed (2 suites), smg 2704 passed (29 suites), 0 failed everywhere.
  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check clean; cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings clean (without --all-features, no OpenCV here).
  • Servicer, in the venv from the write-up's recipe (uv venv .venv && uv pip install … -e crates/grpc_client/python -e grpc_servicer …): 413 passed, 12 skipped (the vLLM-gated tests, including the three new ones in test_vllm_mm_processor.py::TestServicerWiring and test_vllm_pd_media_identity.py, run on the vLLM e2e lane).
  • PYTHONPATH=e2e_test pytest -q --noconftest e2e_test/infra e2e_test/fixtures: 75 passed, 3 skipped (no harness file changed).
  • Pre-commit hooks over the 38 changed files pass; cargo run -p openapi-gen produces the spec with /v1/messages/count_tokens.
  • Verification the reviewer runs (not run here): K3 PNG request → 200, prompt_tokens 463, mode="router",reason="model_not_opted_in"; MiniMax-M3 PD pair with the servicer from this branch on both legs (image and short video; SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_VIDEO_FRAMES=16 on the sidecar caps decoding at 16 frames, unset leaves it as vLLM decides); /workers shows mm_processor_source for an env-configured servicer.

vLLM serves KimiK3ForConditionalGeneration from its kimi_k3 package,
whose prompt updates target <|kimi_image_placeholder|> (id 163838) and
never the gateway's <|media_pad|> anchor (id 163605). A forwarded image
reference therefore failed the engine's prompt replacement with a 500
on every retry; the worker opt-in added in #2623 is withdrawn and the
parity script no longer lists the model. GLM-5.3-Flash is unchanged.

…edia

vllm.multimodal.video is not a module on the vLLM this servicer targets
(VideoMediaIO is re-exported from vllm.multimodal.media), so the default
frame count was never found and the budget was written in its place,
which for a budget above vLLM's default of 32 raised sampling instead of
capping it. The import is corrected, an unknown default with no explicit
count now leaves sampling untouched with one warning, and the test stub
registers the module production imports.

…r probes

smg-grpc-proto 0.4.21 is the first release with
GetServerInfoResponse.mm_processor_source (18) and
GenerateComplete.media_identity (15); the servicer now requires it, as
0.13.0, and sets both fields without probing the descriptor. The proto
contract tests cover both fields, and GetServerInfo names the processor
mode's source in a servicer test.

Also from that review: a blank flag or environment value is unset,
consistently; client-visible messages lead with --mm-processor; the
sidecar's --mm-sidecar-timeout-ms, which applied to nothing (each job
carries its deadline), is gone with the README claim built on it.

…not build

build_media_identity ran after the engine had answered and could raise
on shapes it did not anticipate (a missing prompt_token_ids key, mixed
grid dtypes, a non-tensor element), turning a served request into a
client error. The identity is an optimisation with a fallback, decode
reprocessing the media, so the build is now guarded: a failure logs
one warning with the request id and the leg answers without it.

…identity

vLLM's Qwen-VL processors emit the video timing as second_per_grid_ts,
the Qwen-Omni family and the gateway's own processors as
video_second_per_grid; the identity relay and the router's decode clone
listed only the first, so a worker-processed video's timing could be
dropped from the decode leg and its M-RoPE positions rebuilt without
it. Both names are in the shared grid-key list on each side, with a
test per spelling.

The servicer's capability probe mapped a registry ValueError (no
processor entry for the architecture, as on a vLLM nightly) to "no
vision", and counted an enable_mm_embeds engine with one zeroed
modality limit as language-model-only; either took a healthy vision
decode worker out of service for every PD image request, with a
non-retryable 400 after selection. Unknown now means multimodal (the
engine rejects what it cannot take), warned once per architecture, and
only --language-model-only concludes an absent encoder.

On the router, a multimodal request's pairing leaves a
language-model-only decode worker out while a vision-capable one is
open, on retries too, instead of failing after selection. An identity
without ids, or for a leg that is not tokenized, is not applied, and a
few doc blocks are trimmed.

…ndor

The GLM-5.3 markers now cover the family the multimodal registry
matches (GLM-5-Next, dash-spelled ids); the other GLM generations take
the documented effort set and reject the rest, as the vendor does; the
output-budget gate is a profile predicate; a max_completion_tokens
case joins its tests; the module header is trimmed; refusing file_url
at ingress on every backend is stated as the decision it is. z.ai's
refusal of .bmp images is encoded where media formats are decided: a
registry hook the GLM-5.3 spec sets, checked from the bytes, the data
URL's type or the URL path when the media plan is prepared.

… a router, sanitize label names

The f32 widening fixed on the HTTP and PD paths in #2637 was still on
the external-provider paths: to_value_exact, shared from the protocols
crate, now builds the OpenAI and Gemini upstream payloads, with a 0.95
round-trip test. /v1/messages/count_tokens without a router answers the
NO_ROUTER 404 like every other route instead of a 501 Anthropic SDKs
read as endpoint unsupported; the route joins the generated OpenAPI
spec, x-api-key the CORS allow-list, and the PD router tests' 5 s
round-trip guards become 60 s hang guards. /engine_metrics keeps
colons in metric names and label values only: in a label name, where
one is illegal, the escape becomes _ as the old sanitizer did.

…ody edits

The early-commit path took its prefill load guard by index from a
vector decided 400 lines earlier and recorded the prefill's outcome
twice: the attempt wrote the decode's 2xx over a body failure the drain
had recorded, which reset the breaker's failure count. The guards are
a typed pair now, the drain alone records the prefill outcome on that
path, with the error metric alongside, and the 5 s round-trip guards
in the PD router tests become 60 s hang guards. Streaming /v1/messages
gets a test for the early commit it takes.

RawBody keeps one entry per key as a Value does (last value, first
position), so a duplicated model key cannot carry an alias past the
rewrite; an insert of the value already present leaves the body
unmutated, keeping the fast path for the prefill leg's stream:false; a
non-object body names the shape it needs; and a case table runs the PD
edits over adversarial bodies against the Value oracle.

Walkthrough

This PR updates typed request serialization, provider validation, multimodal image handling and worker behavior, gateway routing, HTTP streaming, request-body parsing, CORS, and metric aggregation.

Changes

Protocol and provider behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exact request serialization
crates/protocols/src/common.rs, crates/external_router/src/gemini/steps/request_building.rs, crates/external_router/src/openai/chat.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/common/mod.rs
A shared helper serializes typed values through JSON bytes. Gemini and OpenAI chat request serialization now use it.
z.ai profile validation and output budgets
crates/protocols/src/profile/*, model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/common/stages/context_length.rs
z.ai model matching and reasoning-effort validation use model-specific rules. Output-budget enforcement uses a provider-profile method.
Messages token-count operation
clients/openapi-gen/src/main.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/gateway.rs
The OpenAPI document adds POST /v1/messages/count_tokens. If no router is selected, the gateway returns NO_ROUTER; the missing-model test expects 404.

Multimodal image validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Image-format detection and validation
crates/multimodal/src/registry/traits.rs, crates/multimodal/src/registry/glm53_flash.rs
Model specs can declare rejected image formats. Format detection supports inline bytes, data URLs, and URL extensions. GLM-5.3 Flash rejects BMP.
Planned media validation and Kimi anchors
model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/multimodal/plan.rs, crates/multimodal/src/registry/kimi_k3.rs, crates/multimodal/scripts/check_worker_anchor_parity.py
Placeholder planning validates image formats. Kimi K3 image placeholders are no longer worker-expandable, and its parity-script entry is removed.

gRPC multimodal worker behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Processor settings and video-frame handling
grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_processor.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_mm_processor.py
Blank settings resolve as unset. Errors identify the launcher flag. If the video-frame default is unknown, frame clamping leaves sampling unchanged.
vLLM multimodal capability checks
grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_salt.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_mm_salt.py
Registry probe failures report multimodal support and warn once per architecture. Embedding-only detection uses supported modality limits when available.
Worker media identity and video timing
grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/media_identity.py, grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/servicer.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_media_refs_proto_fields.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_media_identity.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_pd_media_identity.py
The worker supports both video timing-key spellings and attempts media-identity construction directly. Identity-build failures leave identity unset and allow the request to complete.
Sidecar timeout configuration
grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_sidecar.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_mm_sidecar.py, grpc_servicer/README.md, grpc_servicer/pyproject.toml
The sidecar no longer resolves or accepts a timeout setting. Job deadlines remain per-job values. Package metadata and documentation are updated.

Gateway multimodal routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Vision-aware decode worker selection
model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/context.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/common/placement.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/common/stages/worker_selection.rs
Multimodal state and vision requirements pass into PD worker selection. Selection applies vision filtering when a compatible vision-capable pair is available.
Media identity relay to decode
model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/proto_wrapper.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/common/stages/request_execution.rs, model_gateway/src/routers/grpc/multimodal/refs.rs
The gateway applies media identities only when the request can use them. Missing or unusable identities leave the decode request unchanged. The additional video timing key is retained.

PD streaming and prefill accounting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Background prefill drain and outcome accounting
model_gateway/src/routers/http/pd_router.rs
For qualifying streamed requests, the router commits the decode stream while draining the prefill body in the background. Drain success or failure determines the prefill outcome and metrics.

Raw HTTP request-body handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Raw-body parsing and edits
model_gateway/src/routers/http/request_body.rs
Duplicate top-level keys resolve to the last value. Object-shape errors have a specific message, and unchanged insertions do not mark the body as mutated.

Metric label sanitization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sanitize aggregated label names
model_gateway/src/worker/metrics_aggregator.rs, model_gateway/tests/metrics_aggregator_test.rs
Aggregation replaces escaped colons in label names with underscores while preserving colons in metric names and label values. Families with colliding sanitized label names are omitted.

Configured-origin CORS header

Layer / File(s) Summary
Allow the API key header
model_gateway/src/server.rs
Configured-origin CORS now permits the x-api-key request header.

🟡 Nit: to_value_exact was inserted between default_unknown_model's doc comment and the function it documents. Lines 14–15 ("Default model for endpoints where model is optional…") now attach to to_value_exact's rustdoc, and default_unknown_model is left undocumented. Move the new function (with its own doc) above line 14 or below default_unknown_model.

🟡 Nit: MIME types are case-insensitive (RFC 2045), but image::ImageFormat::from_mime_type matches the lowercase string exactly. A data URL spelled data:image/BMP;base64,… (or an ImageData part whose mime_type is IMAGE/BMP when byte-sniffing fails) slips past rejected_image_formats and gets served where the vendor would 400. Lowercasing the media type before the lookup closes it:

image::ImageFormat::from_mime_type(media_type.to_ascii_lowercase())

(from_extension already lowercases, so the .BMP URL-path case is covered.)

Fixed in 76bdde1: the media type is trimmed and ASCII-lowercased before from_mime_type, for a data URL and for an ImageData part's mime_type alike; test cases data:image/BMP and IMAGE/BMP.

… pair-aware vision filter

Review round 1: --language-model-only is read off the config before
the registry probe, so an unknown probe answer never puts such a
worker on the vision side, and the embeds-only rule concludes "no
pixels" only when every modality the model's processor supports is at
0 (the supported set from the registry; unknown assumes the tower).
The router enables the vision filter only when an open prefill has an
open vision-capable partner on its runtime, so a vision decode worker
that pairs with nothing cannot shut out the pool. The BMP rule sniffs a
data URL's decoded bytes before believing its media type and reads the
type in any case; a label-name collision after sanitizing drops that
metric family instead of rendering an invalid page; to_value_exact
sits above the doc comment it had split.

🔴 Important: get_supported_mm_limits is not a method of MultiModalRegistry. On vLLM main (checked 2026-09-23) it lives on BaseProcessingInfo (vllm/multimodal/processing/context.py:442, takes only self), reachable as MULTIMODAL_REGISTRY.get_processing_info(model_config).get_supported_mm_limits(); the registry class itself defines no such method. As written, this line raises AttributeError on every real vLLM install, the bare except Exception swallows it, _supported_modalities returns [], and _mm_embeds_only is permanently False — so the embeds-only detection this push adds never fires in production, silently re-opening the bug it fixes (an enable_mm_embeds worker with image=0 advertising vision it cannot encode). The fake registry in test_vllm_mm_salt.py defines the method on the registry object itself, so the tests cannot catch the mismatch.

Suggest MULTIMODAL_REGISTRY.get_processing_info(model_config).get_supported_mm_limits() (keeping the registry spelling as a fallback if an older vLLM had it there), plus a once-per-architecture logger.warning in the except, like _registry_supports_multimodal_inputs does — otherwise the next vLLM API move degrades this function invisibly again.

Right, and thank you: checked against vLLM main (registry.py:147 get_processing_info(model_config)) and v0.19.0 (only the private _create_processing_info(model_config, tokenizer=None)). Fixed in 3ac330c: _supported_modalities reaches get_supported_mm_limits() through whichever of the two the registry has, and the test fake now mirrors both shapes (get_processing_info and _create_processing_info returning an info object). Before this the call raised into the fallback and the rule always assumed the tower.

🟡 Nit: The gate checks vision capability on the decode side of the pair only, but once the filter is enabled, placement::select_pair applies candidate_filter through its eligible closure to the prefill leg as well. A --language-model-only prefill (label supports_vision="false") that is the only open partner of the vision-capable decode makes vision_decode_open() return true (the local open closure never checks vision_capable on the prefill), yet with the filter on, every prefill is ineligible and select_pair fails with No available prefill workers — instead of the documented fallback of using the pool as-is so dispatch names the incompatibility. Same failure shape as the decode-side bug this push fixes, one leg over.

Mirroring what the filter will demand — open(prefill) && vision_capable(prefill.as_ref()) in the .filter(...) — keeps the invariant that the filter is only enabled when it leaves a selectable pair.

Fixed in 3ac330c: the gate requires the open prefill to be vision-capable as well, since select_pair applies the filter to both legs. The unpairable-vision test now also registers a language-model-only prefill whose only partner is the vision decode worker and asserts the pool still pairs (checked to fail without the prefill check).

🟡 Nit: This decodes the entire base64 payload just to sniff the magic bytes — image::guess_format only reads the first few dozen bytes, but a multi-megabyte data-URL image gets a full transient copy allocated and thrown away at validation time, on every image part, before the image is decoded again downstream. Decoding a bounded prefix keeps the sniff O(1):

let trimmed = payload.trim().as_bytes();
let prefix = &trimmed[..trimmed.len().min(64) / 4 * 4];
// 64 base64 chars = 48 bytes, plenty for guess_format
BASE64_STANDARD.decode(prefix).ok()

(Cutting on a 4-char boundary keeps a prefix of valid standard base64 valid; slicing as_bytes() also avoids a str slice panic on a malformed multi-byte payload.)

Fixed in 3ac330c: the sniff decodes a bounded prefix (128 base64 characters, 96 bytes, whole quads), not the payload; a test case with a 4 KiB BMP data URL still sniffs as BMP.

Handle data URL schemes case-insensitively in the format detector.

A DATA:...;base64,... URL can bypass GLM-5.3 Flash's BMP rejection. The detector only matches lowercase data: and returns no format for the uppercase-scheme URL. The tracker later parses the same URL as scheme data, decodes it, and accepts the BMP bytes. Match the detector's scheme handling to the parser.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Filter media-reference candidates by vision capability.

accepts_media_refs checks only the mm_processor label. A configured label can make a supports_vision="false" worker pass this filter. PD selection can then choose that worker, although the vLLM servicer cannot process multimodal input and can reject media_refs.

Review round 2: get_supported_mm_limits lives on the processing info,
reached through the registry's get_processing_info (vLLM main) or
_create_processing_info (0.19-0.20), not on the registry itself, where
the previous call raised into the fallback and always assumed the
tower. The router's vision gate also checks the prefill leg, since the
filter applies to both; and the data-URL sniff decodes a bounded
prefix rather than a copy of the image.

🔴 Important: &payload[..end - end % 4] can panic on a non-char-boundary. end is a char boundary (from char_indices/len()), but end - end % 4 subtracts 1–3 bytes, which can land inside a multi-byte character — and str range indexing panics there. Example: data:image/png;base64,aéé — payload is 3 chars, 5 bytes (a@0, é@1–2, é@3–4), so end = 5, end - end % 4 = 4, and byte 4 is the second byte of the last é → byte index 4 is not a char boundary panic on a client-supplied GLM-5.3-Flash request. The new 4 KiB test payload is pure ASCII, so it can't catch this.

Base64 is ASCII, so counting chars buys nothing — slice bytes and let the decode fail on multi-byte junk (falling back to the media type, as a full-payload decode failure did before):

Suggested change
let payload = payload.trim();
let end = payload
.char_indices()
.nth(SNIFF_BASE64_CHARS)
.map_or(payload.len(), |(i, _)| i);
BASE64_STANDARD.decode(&payload[..end - end % 4]).ok()
let payload = payload.trim().as_bytes();
let end = payload.len().min(SNIFF_BASE64_CHARS);
BASE64_STANDARD.decode(&payload[..end - end % 4]).ok()

(decode takes impl AsRef<[u8]>, so a byte slice drops in.)

Fixed in the commit just pushed (fix(multimodal): sniff a data URL's base64 prefix as bytes): the prefix is taken on as_bytes() and bounded by byte length, so no str slice can land inside a character; a non-ASCII payload simply fails to decode and falls back to the media type. Your aéé example is now a test case, with ééé and an empty payload.

…tr slice

Review round 3: the prefix was cut at a byte offset rounded down to a
base64 quad, which can land inside a multi-byte character of a
client-supplied payload and panic on the str slice. The prefix is a
byte slice now (base64 is ASCII; anything else fails to decode and
falls back to the media type), with the multi-byte payloads as tests.

Closing in favour of four smaller PRs, at the maintainer's request: #2644 (item 1, the Kimi-K3 opt-in, alone so it can merge first), #2645 (items 2–5, servicer side), #2646 (items 5–7, router, multimodal registry and z.ai profile), #2647 (items 8–9). One deliberate change from this branch: the servicer capability probe from #2640 (mm_salt.py) is left exactly as its author merged it; the ValueError → "assume multimodal" reversal and the embeds-only rewrite are not carried over. Every other review finding here is carried over as fixed.
