🟡 Nit: This resolve() resolves all eight _MM_SETTING_SPECS entries, not just the three the sidecar uses, with a few side effects:
- Worker-only env vars in the sidecar's environment (e.g.
SMG_VLLM_MM_PROCESSOR, plausible when worker and sidecar share a pod env) emit deprecation warnings pointing at flags the sidecar's parser doesn't accept (--mm-processor), and an invalid worker-only value (e.g.SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_INFLIGHT=0) now crashes the sidecar at startup even though the sidecar never consumed that variable before this change. settings.sourcescarries all eight entries, so the startup log and the hellosettings_sourcefield list five irrelevant…=defaultentries. The PR description's example (redis_url=flag,sidecar_namespace=env,sidecar_timeout_ms=default) shows only the three relevant ones; the heartbeat test hand-builds_settings_sourceswith two entries, so nothing covers the real shape.- For the vars the sidecar does use, the deprecation warning names the worker's flags (
--mm-redis-url,--mm-sidecar-namespace) rather than the sidecar's--redis-url/--namespace.
Consider resolving (or at least reporting) only the subset the sidecar consumes, e.g. filtering sources to the three requested names.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 457fe19, together with the CodeRabbit finding above: subset resolution with the sidecar's own flag names, and sources (hence the hello settings_source) now holds exactly the three entries the PR description shows.

🟡 Nit: resolve() validates every setting even when the resolved processor mode is off, which broadens the declared behavior change beyond SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_INFLIGHT. A worker with processing off but a stale invalid SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_ITEM_BYTES, SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_ITEMS, SMG_VLLM_MM_SIDECAR_TIMEOUT_MS or SMG_VLLM_MM_SIDECAR_MAX_QUEUE (e.g. SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_ITEM_BYTES=32MiB) boots fine on main but now fails in VllmEngineServicer.__init__ on upgrade. Failing loudly on bad config is a reasonable direction, but only the inflight case is described as deliberate and tested — worth either documenting the wider scope in the PR/README or deferring validation of settings that won't be used.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed that this is wider than the inflight case, and it is deliberate: every setting is read at startup so a stale unreadable value fails loudly instead of biting when the mode is later switched on. I documented it in 457fe19 (README sentence) and in the PR description rather than deferring validation per setting.

🟡 Nit: serve() now resolves all eight SMG_VLLM_MM_* variables from the real os.environ, but only these two are cleared. An ambient SMG_VLLM_MM_SIDECAR_TIMEOUT_MS on the test machine breaks test_env_fills_in_for_absent_flags (it asserts proto.DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS and source == "default"), and an ambient invalid value of any of the other five crashes serve(). Clearing every env var in mm_processor._MM_SETTING_SPECS here would keep these tests hermetic.

Reviewed the full diff: the flag > env > default resolution in MmSettings is sound, back-compat paths (older launcher, older proto package, older namespace) are all handled and tested, and proto field 18 is collision-free. Left 3 🟡 nits (sidecar over-resolving worker-only settings, validation broadened beyond the described SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_INFLIGHT change, and test env hermeticity). No blocking issues.

🟡 Nit: Two quiet-failure edges in the new subset resolution:
- A name in
onlythat isn't a_MM_SETTING_SPECSkey is silently ignored (the loop iterates the specs, so a typo like"redis-url"never matcheswanted). The corresponding field then staysNoneand the caller fails at a distance — e.g.redacted_url(None)/from_url(None)in the sidecar — instead of at the badresolve()call. A cheap guard would fail loudly, in line with the PR's own principle:
wanted = set(_MM_SETTING_SPECS if only is None else only)
if unknown := wanted - _MM_SETTING_SPECS.keys():
raise ValueError(f"unknown mm settings: {sorted(unknown)}")- A subset-resolved result has non-empty
sources, soresolvedisTrueand a later fullresolve()returns it unchanged with the other five fields stillNone. If such an object ever reachedbuild_mm_processor,processor=Noneslips past theMODE_OFFcheck and constructs aRedisMediaProcessorwithNonecaps. Not reachable from current call sites (the sidecar keeps its settings to itself), but worth a note onresolved, or tracking the requested subset so a wider re-resolve fails loudly.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in f4d42a2: (1) an unknown name in only= raises ValueError("unknown mm settings: [...]"); (2) build_mm_processor refuses a settings object whose sources do not cover every setting (resolved without [...]), and the resolved docstring says a subset is not a full resolution. Tests: test_an_unknown_subset_name_fails_loudly, test_a_subset_resolved_object_cannot_build_a_processor.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 Nit: redacted_url only strips userinfo from the netloc, but redis-py's from_url also accepts credentials in the query string (redis://cache:6379/0?password=s3cret — querystring options are documented and win over conflicting kwargs). Such a URL has no @ in the netloc, so it's returned verbatim and the password lands in the startup log. Worth also dropping (or masking) a password query parameter, e.g.:
parts = urlsplit(url)
query = parse_qsl(parts.query, keep_blank_values=True)
if any(k == "password" for k, _ in query):
parts = parts._replace(
query=urlencode([(k, "***" if k == "password" else v) for k, v in query])
)There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in f4d42a2: redacted_url now keeps only scheme, masked userinfo, host and db path, dropping the query and fragment, so ?password= never reaches the log. Test extended with a query-string password and a rediss:// URL with a fragment.

The vLLM servicer read its eight media settings from SMG_VLLM_MM_* only, and the launcher passed it nothing but the engine, so the settings appeared in neither --help nor the pod spec. MmSettings carries the eight values from the launcher's --mm-* flags and resolves flag > env > default once, naming each value's source; an env-sourced value logs a deprecation line. The startup line and a new GetServerInfo field report where the processor mode came from. The sidecar resolves only the three settings it runs on (url, namespace, timeout) under its own flag names, so an unreadable worker-only variable in its environment does not stop it, and it logs the redis URL without credentials. The README no longer claims a default for --mm-max-items that the code does not have. Signed-off-by: Alex McC <319643551+hello-alexmcc@users.noreply.github.com>
…edential out of the sidecar log An unknown name in resolve(only=) was silently ignored and a subset-resolved object could reach build_mm_processor with unset fields; both now raise. Description
Problem
The vLLM servicer reads its eight media-processing settings from
SMG_VLLM_MM_*environment variables only. It has no CLI of its own: vLLM's gRPC launcher builds the parser from--host,--portandAsyncEngineArgs, then instantiatesVllmEngineServicer(async_llm, start_time)with nothing else. So the only way to configure engine-side media is env on the engine container, which neither--helpnorkubectl describe podshows; that was missed on a live MiniMax-M3 pod on 2026-09-22.Solution
The servicer side of a two-part change (the vLLM launcher gets the flags in a companion change; this PR is the one to merge first).
MmSettings(mm_processor.py): the eight settings,from_args(args)reading--mm-processor,--mm-max-inflight,--mm-max-item-bytes,--mm-max-items,--mm-redis-url,--mm-sidecar-timeout-ms,--mm-sidecar-max-queue,--mm-sidecar-namespacefrom a launcher namespace (absent flags ask for nothing), andresolve(env)applying flag > env > default with the existing validation for both sources and asourcesmap naming where each value came from. When an env var supplies a value the flag did not, one WARNING:SMG_VLLM_MM_PROCESSOR is deprecated in favour of --mm-processor; env support ends in the next minor release(same shape for the others). Resolving twice is stable and logs nothing more.build_mm_processor(engine, env=…, settings=…)is now a thin wrapper over the resolved settings. One deliberate behaviour change: all eight settings are validated when the servicer starts, whatever the processor mode, so a stale unreadable value (saySMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_ITEM_BYTES=32MiBon a worker with processing off) now fails at startup instead of when the mode is later switched on.SMG_VLLM_MM_MAX_INFLIGHTwas already read with the mode off, since the cap also bounds router-preprocessed media.VllmEngineServicer(async_llm, start_time, mm_settings=None):Nonemeans resolve from the env, so older launchers keep working. The startup line becomesVllmEngineServicer initialized (mm_processor=redis, source=flag).GetServerInfoResponse.mm_processor_source(proto field 18, set only when a processor is advertised) flattens into themm_processor_sourceworker label, so the gateway's/workersshows it; the Rust side needs no code (flat_labelspicks every non-empty field). The servicer sets the field only when the installed proto package has it, sosmg-grpc-proto0.4.20 keeps working; the package version moves to 0.4.21.--redis-url,--namespaceand the new--mm-sidecar-timeout-msresolve through the sameMmSettings, restricted to those three (resolve(only=…, flags=…), so a worker-only variable in the sidecar's environment is neither validated nor warned about, and deprecation lines name the sidecar's own flags). The resolved values and their sources are logged at startup with the redis URL's credentials redacted, and the hello hash carriessettings_source(redis_url=flag,sidecar_namespace=env,sidecar_timeout_ms=default). The parser is built bybuild_parser(add_engine_args, parser_cls)so it can be tested without vLLM.Compatibility:
