Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to Streamed prefill/decode requests now start returning decode output once both upstream responses succeed, and the prefill response finishes draining in the background. The prefill worker stays counted as busy until draining ends, and drain failures count against its health. The new Anthropic token-count endpoint forwards the required headers and credentials and tracks worker load and failures. header when present.
- Line 928: Update the detached prefill-drain path in the HTTP PD router so it
no longer calls prefill_response.bytes().await and buffers the full body;
instead, iterate through prefill_response.bytes_stream() chunk by chunk and
discard each chunk while keeping the existing completion metric and warning on
stream errors. Keep the change scoped to the prefill response handling around
the existing prefill_response flow so streamed requests can finish without
retaining unbounded body memory.
- Line 2092: Update the outcome tracking in the pd_router response handling path
around worker.record_outcome so it records a failure when the body read fails
after a 200 head, instead of leaving the success status recorded. Keep the
existing success path for fully read responses, and make the change in the
body-read branch that currently returns 502 so truncated count-tokens responses
no longer mark the worker as healthy.
- Line 2045: Update the count-tokens path around placement::select_single to
create a WorkerLoadGuard for the selected prefill worker and keep it alive
through the response-body read. Recheck overload immediately before dispatching
the request, matching the PD generation and regular HTTP paths.
In `@model_gateway/src/routers/mod.rs`:
- Line 226: Align GrpcRouter with the count-tokens API contract: if gRPC routers
are intended to support the endpoint, implement route_messages_count_tokens to
match the HTTP router behavior; otherwise, restrict the endpoint to HTTP routers
so gRPC does not advertise a route that returns 501.
In `@model_gateway/src/server.rs`:
- Line 307: Update CountMessageTokensRequest in the server request flow to
retain the supported context_management and mcp_servers fields, using typed
fields or the existing passthrough-map pattern. Ensure both HTTP routers forward
their submitted values unchanged, and add coverage asserting those forwarded
values.

Compare
The dual dispatch awaited both response heads and then read the whole prefill body before forwarding decode. A streamed prefill leg's body ends only when prefill (and its KV transfer) completes, so every decode chunk and SSE keepalive produced meanwhile was held back and flushed in one burst, inflating client-observed TTFT and breaking keepalive-based idle timeouts. For streamed requests that need nothing from the prefill body (no logprob merge), forward the decode stream as soon as both heads are 2xx and drain the prefill body in a spawned task. The drain is required: dropping a reqwest response with an unread body closes the connection, which the prefill engine treats as a client disconnect and aborts mid KV transfer, leaving decode waiting for KV that never arrives. The prefill head must still be 2xx before committing, so a prefill 5xx keeps its status for the retry layer instead of becoming a 200 with an in-band error. Load guards, breaker outcomes and the prefill duration metric are recorded as before. Ported from sgl-project/sglang#37961. Signed-off-by: James Liu <jamesl@modal.com>

Description
Problem
In HTTP PD,
execute_dual_dispatch_internalwaits for both response heads (try_join!) and then reads the entire prefill body before it forwards the decode stream. When the prefill leg is streamed, its body ends only after prefill and its KV transfer finish. Everything decode produces in the meantime, including SSE keepalives, is held back and then flushed in one burst. That inflates client-observed TTFT and defeats keepalive-based idle timeouts.Solution
For streamed requests that need nothing from the prefill body (no logprob merge), commit the client stream as soon as both heads are 2xx.
try_join!already waits for it. A prefill 5xx keeps going throughprocess_prefill_response, so it remains a retryable status instead of becoming a 200 with an in-band error.smg_pd_prefill_duration_secondsis recorded when the drain finishes.Non-streamed and logprob requests keep the current flow.
Ported from sgl-project/sglang#37961, with two corrections:
Changes
routers/http/pd_router.rs: the streaming fast path inexecute_dual_dispatch_internal. New tests, on ephemeral ports:stream_commits_on_decode_head_and_drains_prefill_body: prefill answers 200 and holds its body open. The client stream must complete anyway, and the prefill body must then be read to its end rather than dropped with the connection.stream_prefill_error_head_is_not_committed: a prefill 503 alongside a decode 200 SSE must reach the client as a 503.Test Plan
