🟡 Nit: The user-facing error message contains a run of ~14 spaces between "requested" and the token count ("However, you requested {max_tokens} tokens"), likely a leftover from wrapping the string literal. Clients will see the garbled whitespace verbatim.

Good catch, fixed in 20b33bc: the editing step had swallowed the line continuation, so the spaces were really in the literal.

🟡 Nit: The struct's doc comment a few lines up still says "The thinking object shared by the Kimi and MiniMax chat APIs" — with this z.ai-specific field added, the enumeration is stale. Consider updating it to mention z.ai (e.g. "shared by the Kimi, MiniMax and z.ai chat APIs") so the doc doesn't rot as soon as this merges.

🟡 Nit: This budget check only exists in the gRPC pipeline. A GLM request with an impossible max_tokens on the HTTP router path still reaches the engine, where SGLang clamps (200) instead of the vendor's 400 — so the z.ai contract parity this PR establishes holds on one of the two router paths only. This mirrors the existing enforce_context_length asymmetry, so it may be a deliberate scope choice, but it's worth either noting the limitation in the module docs / PR description or filing a follow-up for the HTTP path, since HTTP and gRPC are expected to present the same API contract.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Deliberate scope, now stated in the function docs and the PR description: like enforce_context_length, the budget check lives on the gRPC pipeline; the HTTP router forwards the body. Widening both checks to the HTTP path is a follow-up.

Reviewed the z.ai profile, model-id selection, the new clear_thinking field, and the OutputBudget gateway stage. No blocking issues — 3 nits posted inline (error-message whitespace, a stale doc comment, and a note on HTTP-path parity for the budget check). Profile rules match the PR's documented vendor contract, the stage is correctly gated to the z.ai profile and placed in the shared ingress path, and test coverage is thorough.

GLM-5.3-Flash requests were validated against the OpenAI baseline only, so the vendor's contract went unenforced: thinking could be "disabled" and reasoning leaked into content, unknown efforts and tool types were ignored, clear_thinking was dropped, and a completion budget no window could hold went through. The profile, from the providers-verifier golden set, rejects disabling thinking and any effort outside low/high/max, carries clear_thinking to the chat template, consumes tool_stream, applies the vendor's sampling defaults, rejects unknown tool types and file_url blocks by name, and the gateway answers an oversized max_tokens with context_length_exceeded when the selected worker advertises its window. The thinking-cannot-be-disabled rule, the effort set and the sampling defaults were recorded against GLM-5.3-Flash, yet the profile applied them to every model it selected, ChatGLM3 included. As the Kimi profile pins K3 alone, those rules now apply to GLM-5 ids only (is_glm5), the vendor-level rules stay profile-wide, and the chatglm marker is gone: that family predates the z.ai chat contract. …ries docs.z.ai has only the GLM-5.3 series unable to switch thinking off, with efforts low/high/max; GLM-5.2 takes thinking.type disabled and maps the other efforts, and earlier generations take every value. 🟡 Nit: Gating all of validate_thinking on is_glm53 also moves the thinking.type: adaptive rejection under the 5.3 gate, but the rationale for that check ("not a z.ai value", per the doc on validate_thinking) is model-independent: adaptive is a Kimi-ism that no GLM generation's schema defines, unlike disabled/efforts where docs.z.ai genuinely differs per series. After this change a glm-5.2 request with thinking.type: adaptive passes validation and is forwarded to an engine/template that has no meaning for it — silently accepted rather than 400 thinking_type_not_supported. If the recordings don't establish the vendor's behavior for this case, keeping it 5.3-gated is a defensible verified-only stance, but then the "(not a z.ai value)" rationale in the validate_thinking doc no longer matches the scoping; consider either lifting the Adaptive arm to apply profile-wide or rewording the doc so the gate and its rationale agree.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, and fixed by lifting the Adaptive arm in ac9bb5c: thinking.type is validated profile-wide (validate_thinking_type: adaptive is a 400 for every z.ai model, since docs.z.ai defines only enabled/disabled; the hint says enabled for the 5.3 series and enabled or disabled otherwise), while disabled and the effort set stay GLM-5.3 rules (validate_glm53_thinking). The generation test now asserts adaptive → 400 for GLM-5.2, GLM-5 and GLM-4.6 (watched fail first); docs and PR table updated.
Gating the whole thinking check on the GLM-5.3 series had let adaptive, a Kimi value no GLM schema defines, through for the other generations. The type check is profile-wide again; disabled and the effort set stay GLM-5.3 rules. Signed-off-by: Alex McC <319643551+hello-alexmcc@users.noreply.github.com>
Description
Problem
SMG has no provider profile for z.ai's GLM models, so a GLM-5.3-Flash request is validated against the OpenAI baseline only. The z.ai golden set in
providers-verifier(golden/zai/glm-5.3-flash/, recorded 2026-09-22 with the native and the OpenAI SDK) shows where the vendor's contract differs, and a replay of that set against an SMG gateway found the gaps:thinking.type=disabledandreasoning_effort: noneare accepted with the raw reasoning leaking intocontent, unknown efforts (turbo) and unknown tool types (retrieval) are accepted and ignored,thinking.clear_thinkingis silently dropped, and amax_tokensno window can hold is accepted where the vendor answers 4xx.Solution
A
ProviderProfile::Zai, selected for any/-separated model id segment starting withglm,zaiorz-ai(glm-5.3-flash,zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash,/models/glm-4.7; ChatGLM predates the contract and stays on the baseline), following the Kimi and MiniMax pattern. As the Kimi profile pins K3 alone, the thinking rules (cannot be disabled, effortslow|high|max) apply only to the GLM-5.3 series (is_glm53:GLM-5.3,glm-5.3-flash,glm5.3-air), which docs.z.ai documents as the one series that "can only be enabled"; GLM-5.2 takesdisabledand maps the other efforts, earlier generations take every value. The sampling defaults go to the models the same page lists them for (GLM-5.x, GLM-4.7, GLM-4.6; GLM-4.5 and older differ and keep the engine's own). The vendor-level rules (tool_stream,clear_thinking, tool types,file_url, the output budget) apply to every z.ai model. What the vendor does, and what the profile encodes:thinking.type: disabledthinking_disabled_not_supported(GLM-5.3 series)thinking.type: adaptivethinking_type_not_supported(every z.ai model)reasoning_effort/thinking.effortinlow,high,maxreasoning_effortnone,minimal,medium,xhigh, or unknown, in either spelling (both are forwarded, so both are checked)reasoning_effort_not_allowed(GLM-5.3 series)thinking.clear_thinking: true/falseclear_thinkingkwarg, unless the client set that kwarg itselftool_stream: trueothermaptemperature/top_pomittedtemperature,top_p, penaltiestools[].type: retrievaltool_type_not_supportedmax_tokens: 10_000_000context_length_exceededwhen the selected worker advertises a window (gateway stage, z.ai only)file_urlcontent blockcontent_part_not_supportedat validation, by nametool_choicenaming an undeclared tool,response_format.json_schema.schemanon-object,stream_optionswithoutstreamrole: rootTwo vendor behaviours observed but not encoded, because the recordings give no verified bound: six

Like that input check it runs on the gRPC pipeline only and once at ingress (the HTTP router forwards the body, and a retry re-selection is not re-checked); widening both checks to the HTTP path and to retries is a follow-up, not this PR.Test Plan
