Description

Problem

From the review of #2626: the sidecar's --mm-sidecar-timeout-ms (and the SMG_VLLM_MM_SIDECAR_TIMEOUT_MS fallback it resolved) was parsed and printed in the startup line and applied to nothing. The worker's job timeout already reaches the sidecar as each job's deadline_ms (mm_sidecar_protocol.Job), which is what the sidecar uses to expire a job and to bound its result push. The README claimed the sidecar resolved the timeout "so the two processes cannot disagree", which was true only by construction of the job, not of the flag.

Solution

The flag, the sidecar_timeout_ms entry in the sidecar's settings subset and the log field are removed; the README says where the timeout actually travels. Nothing shipped with the flag (0.13.0 is unreleased).

Test Plan

  • test_vllm_mm_sidecar.py: the resolved sources no longer carry sidecar_timeout_ms, test_the_parser_has_no_timeout_flag.
  • pytest grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_mm_sidecar.py grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_mm_processor.py: 87 passed, 3 skipped. Hooks clean.

…ied to nothing

The flag was parsed and logged and used for nothing else: the worker's
timeout reaches the sidecar as each job's deadline_ms, so the two
processes cannot disagree on it by construction. The flag, its setting
and the README sentence built on it are gone.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • Job timeouts are now provided with each job’s deadline rather than through a sidecar-wide timeout setting.
    • The sidecar’s command-line options and configuration now cover the Redis URL and namespace; the sidecar timeout option is no longer available.
    • Documentation now describes how the sidecar resolves Redis settings and how job deadlines are handled.

Walkthrough

The sidecar no longer resolves, logs, or accepts sidecar_timeout_ms. Its settings cover Redis URL and namespace. The README describes each job’s timeout as a deadline, and tests verify that the timeout setting and CLI option are absent.

Sidecar timeout setting removal

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove sidecar timeout setting
grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/vllm/mm_sidecar.py, grpc_servicer/tests/test_vllm_mm_sidecar.py, grpc_servicer/README.md
The sidecar no longer resolves or logs sidecar_timeout_ms, and its parser no longer provides the timeout flag. Tests check that the setting and option are absent. The README describes the timeout as a per-job deadline.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bffb1

The change is mergeable with a documentation correction: operators must keep explicit namespace overrides equal or the worker and sidecar can use different Redis keys.

Clean removal. Verified that the sidecar never consumed sidecar_timeout_ms (it bounds work via each job's deadline_ms), that MmSettings.resolve(only=...) handles the narrowed subset, and that the settings_source hello field is informational only, so mixed worker/sidecar versions can't mismatch. No issues found.
