Peppy player can leverage three popular media players: mpd, vlc and mpv. It can handle these players on Linux and Windows platforms. Peppy player provides GUI for those players running in a headless (no GUI) mode. Even though vlc and mpv can also play video files Peppy player currently supports only audio functionality.
Only one media player is required for Peppy player. There is no need to install all players. That could be done only if you want to compare the functionality of different media players. To choose the particular media player check the functionality tables on the wiki page related to that media player. The table lists different features which are available in Peppy player for each media player.
