Addresses two cases from #10553.

Relative file chips are joined onto the thread's workspace root, and nothing checks that the file is there. Two common cases open a path that does not exist:

  • The project root is a plain folder holding several git repositories. The agent works in one of them and writes tests/sandbox/test_x.py, which is really at backend/tests/sandbox/test_x.py.
  • The reply names a folder ("Everything is in /work/backend/.notes/audit/") and then lists paths inside it, such as phase2/A-findings.md. That folder is often gitignored, so the workspace index cannot find it either.

Clicking either chip shows "The file could not be accessed or read".

Fix

When the chip's own metadata already says the root-joined path is missing, findWorkspaceFileMatch looks in two more places before giving up:

  1. Each absolute path the reply names, used as a base. A candidate is used only when exactly one of them exists.
  2. The one workspace file whose path ends with every segment of the reference.

Other rules:

  • A file at the root always wins. The root path is rechecked before any redirect.
  • Nothing is guessed when two places hold the path.
  • Panel open, open in editor, copy path and reveal all share this lookup.
  • No extra request for chips whose file exists, or whose metadata has not loaded yet: they still open synchronously. The check reads the metadata the chip already fetched, through the same fileMetadataAtom the chip uses, now extracted from useFileMetadata.
  • References that leave the workspace (.., ~, or absolute after ./) and network paths are never looked up.

Relation to #21927 and #21928

Those PRs build candidates from the thread's tool history. That is the better source whenever the history has the path.

I replayed matchThreadFilePath from #21927 and this change over one real multi-repo project. It has 647 threads and the replay used the real files on disk. Of 2,125 broken multi-segment chips:

Result Chips
Resolved by this PR 1,495
Resolved by #21927 and #21928 304
Both resolve to the same file 222
Both resolve, to different files 50

The 50 disagreements are a known limitation of this PR. In those, the agent edited a copy inside a gitignored .worktrees/<name>/ folder, which the workspace index skips. This PR opens the main checkout's copy, while the tool-history evidence picks the worktree copy. The two approaches combine well: try the evidence first, then these fallbacks.

Most of the chips only this PR resolves are cases the evidence collector cannot see:

  • Piped commands: a command such as ls -la …/phase2/ | head is discarded.
  • Folders inside the workspace: the folder fallback only accepts folders outside the workspace.
  • Untouched files: many files are mentioned in a reply without the thread ever touching them.

Verification

  • Focused tests: vp test run src/components/ChatMarkdown.browser.test.tsx src/markdown-links.test.ts src/workspaceBasenameLookup.test.ts passes all 29 tests. The two new browser cases fail on main, where the chip opens phase2/A-findings.md and tests/sandbox/test_real.py at the root.
  • Fast checks: vp run check:changed passes lint, knip, typecheck (34 packages) and the tests next to the changes.
  • Replay: the table above came from running the real helpers and the real fff finder over that project's data, read-only, on macOS.

This is a logic fix to which file a click opens, so the browser tests are the evidence rather than screenshots. I can add captures if you want them.

Not checked:

  • Other platforms and connections: Windows, and remote or tunnel connections, in a running client. Windows path handling has unit cases.
  • Mobile: ThreadFeed.tsx has its own chip handler, which never received the earlier basename and prefix fallbacks either.
  • Tooltip: it still shows the root-joined path, as it already does for the basename and prefix lookups.

Implementation: Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running inside T3 Code.

…named folder

Relative file chips join onto the thread's workspace root. When the root
holds several repositories, or the reply names a folder and then lists
paths inside it, the chip opens a path that does not exist.

When the chip's own metadata says the root-joined path is missing, try
each absolute path the reply names as a base, then the one workspace file
whose path ends with the reference. An existing root entry still wins,
and a working chip opens without an extra request.

findNestedWorkspaceFile treats any non-null metadata entry as a file match, so a matching directory can be selected instead of the actual file and cause panel reads to fail with WorkspacePathNotFileError. Filter candidates to kind === "file" before counting or selecting matches.

Fixed in b578e1d. A named-folder candidate now counts only when its metadata kind is "file". That matches the workspace index step, which already searches files only. The browser test covers a reply naming two folders where the first holds a directory with that name and the second holds the file: the chip opens the file.

When the nested-path search is truncated, findNestedWorkspaceFile passes partial entries to pickNestedWorkspaceMatch, so an early docs/guide.md result is treated as unique and redirects the chip, editor, and copied paths to an arbitrary repository copy. Reject result.value.truncated before selecting a match.

I checked this one and am leaving the code as it is. truncated counts fuzzy matches too, so it is true for most queries. The finder ranks exact whole-suffix matches above fuzzy ones.

I replayed every nested lookup from one real multi-repo project (647 threads, real files on disk). For 357 references, the top 25 results held exactly one exact suffix match, and 206 of those searches were truncated. I then fetched every result for each one. None gained a second exact match, and the single match was always ranked first. Rejecting truncated results would drop about 58% of these fixes to guard against a case that never occurred.

When several repositories hold the path, all the exact matches rank above the fuzzy ones, so the ambiguity shows up inside the top 25 and pickNestedWorkspaceMatch returns null. The docs/guide.md browser case covers that. The existing basename lookup depends on the same ranking and limit. If you want more margin, I can widen this search page (the contract allows up to 200) rather than reject truncated results.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused web bug fix that resolves missing file-chip paths in nested repositories or named folders while preserving existing successful-path behavior and adding targeted tests. Two unresolved high-severity findings still identify risks around directory matches and truncated searches, which independently require correction before merge.

Walkthrough

ChatMarkdown now attempts nested workspace lookup for eligible file links when the original workspace path is missing. Matching requires a unique file. Copy-path handling uses the matched absolute path when no workspace-relative path is available.

Changes: Workspace file-link resolution

Nested path matching rules

Path helpers validate nested relative paths and match path suffixes. They return a path only when exactly one file matches. Tests cover path validation, ambiguous matches, and Windows case handling.
Metadata-driven link resolution

fileMetadataAtom builds guarded metadata queries. ChatMarkdown uses settled metadata and project entries to look up nested paths. Browser tests cover folder and repository matches, including ambiguous matches and unloaded metadata.
Copy path fallback

A directory with the chip's name is not the file it names, and opening it
fails the panel read. The workspace index step already searches files only.

closing at @StiensWout's request under Provide evidence for the changed behavior.

Changes what a file-chip click opens: nested relative paths now open a file preview instead of the visible file-access error. The PR substitutes browser tests for the required before/after UI evidence and provides no captures or click recording.

submission evidence: "the browser tests are the evidence rather than screenshots"

Attach before/after screenshots of the nested-file chip result and a short recording of the click-to-preview interaction.
