File chips can name a file relative to an agent’s nested working folder and point at a missing root path. This resolves the indexed, unambiguous case at click time. Related: #8251; that issue’s ignored-folder reproduction remains unsupported.

A directory-containing relative path keeps its literal target when it exists or cannot be checked. Once fresh metadata confirms it missing, the chip first tries main’s exact target obtained by stripping a repeated workspace-folder prefix. If that target is unavailable, it may use a unique whole-segment suffix match (exact case first, then unique case-insensitive). Ambiguous, failed and truncated general suffix searches keep the literal path. The deterministic prefix target may accept a truncated result because it does not rely on uniqueness. All chip actions share this decision and preserve line/column metadata. No render-time search was added.

This is a maintainer rebuild of @mikeohuo’s #20071, preserving the contributor’s commits and merging main. It removes the unsafe truncated-page ranking heuristic, trims redundant tests, and uses the existing metadata invalidation command before checking absence. Leading ./ works; pending media opens survive streaming updates and are cancelled when leaving their thread/context.

Limits: general suffix fallback searches at most 25 fuzzy results and refuses every truncated response, including incomplete initial scans. Common paths in large workspaces can therefore remain unresolved despite having one suffix match. Ignored nested files are outside the index. Bare filenames retain the existing first-exact-match policy; this PR does not establish uniqueness for them.

Verification on cd40fc3:

  • Tests trimmed from 58 to 53 across workspaceBasenameLookup.test.ts and markdown-links.test.ts, preserving all 44 baseline tests. The incomplete-search regression failed on the PoC; disabling suffix fallback failed the success cases. Current focused tests: 53/53, plus 19 existing metadata tests passed (72 total). One integration test proves deterministic-prefix precedence, platform casing, literal priority, and the separate truncation rules. All seven upstream workspace-opening browser cases pass. Targeted lint, formatting and web typecheck passed.
  • Independent full-diff review round 1 found leading-./, retained missing-metadata, and streaming-media cancellation defects; all three were fixed. Round 2 found a React Compiler bailout from a ref mutation in a default parameter; moving the initialization into the function fixed it. Both independent reviewers returned no blockers in round 3. A normal merge of current main then reconciled its repeated-workspace-prefix resolver with the suffix fallback; round 4 reviewed the whole integrated diff and both reviewers found no code blockers. The existing ChatMarkdown compiler coverage check passes.
  • Linux web app at the rebuilt head (unique/root/ambiguity/leading-./ and deterministic-prefix precedence repeated at cd40fc3; metadata/media/copy checked on 2504322 before the compiler fix and later main integration), isolated SQLite projection and small real git workspace: unique nested file opens on line 2; existing root wins over a nested twin; the repeated-workspace prefix selects its exact root file despite an unrelated suffix candidate; ambiguous suffix retains its missing literal path; newly created ignored root file wins immediately after a cached miss; leading ./ works; nested PNG expands (320×160); full and relative copies use the resolved path and retain :2:3.
  • Matching 1280×800 base/head screenshots below show the actual main renderer and rebuilt renderer. The tiny fixture proves the indexed case; it does not demonstrate fallback availability in large workspaces.
  • Native editor/reveal, integrated browser (unavailable on this development server), Safari/Firefox clipboard, streaming over a real provider, Windows/macOS/Linux Electron, iOS/Android and remote/relay/tunnel were not exercised. These remain human verification.

Before — actual main renderer:

Before: nested file chip points at a missing root file

After — current rebuilt renderer:

After: chip opens the unique nested file on the requested line

Earlier unique/root/ambiguous flow on 2504322, before the compiler fix and main integration

Current head — deterministic prefix target wins over the unrelated suffix candidate:

Exact prefix target opens on line 2

GitHub CI on this head reports action_required with no jobs (CI run); coordinator approval/run is needed before landing. Local checks above passed. Landing is handled centrally; no merge or recurring watcher.

Tests: GPT-6-Astra; implementation: GPT-6.1-Sol; independent reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol, through T3 Code (Codex/Claude harnesses).

…d path is missing

Agents name files relative to the folder they cd'd into, but chips join every
relative path onto the project root. When that literal file is missing, chip
actions now look up the one indexed workspace file whose path ends with the
same directories. An existing literal path always wins, and zero or several
matches keep today's behavior. Preview, open in panel or editor, reveal, the
built-in browser and both copy actions share the one resolution.

Fixes pingdotgg#8251.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused, well-tested fix to existing file-chip actions, with conservative fallback behavior and no schema, deployment, security, billing, or default changes. An unresolved Medium finding remains about stale asynchronous media lookups opening the wrong preview, but the underlying PR otherwise fits the criteria for a straightforward bug fix.

Needs human approval because:

The media request is now claimed at click time, before the file lookup, so a later click or a thread switch during the lookup drops the older open.

📝 Walkthrough

Markdown file links now use workspace lookup to resolve relative paths when possible. ChatMarkdown uses resolved targets for file actions. Replacement link metadata preserves the original line and column.

Changes: Markdown file-link resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workspace path matching
apps/web/src/workspaceBasenameLookup.ts, apps/web/src/workspaceBasenameLookup.test.ts
Workspace lookup matches bare filenames and unique path suffixes. It returns no match for ambiguous, truncated, or unavailable results. Tests cover matching and fallback cases.
Resolved path metadata
apps/web/src/markdown-links.ts, apps/web/src/markdown-links.test.ts
withMarkdownFileLinkPath rebuilds link metadata for a replacement path and preserves the original line and column. A test checks the resulting metadata.
ChatMarkdown file actions
apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.browser.test.tsx
Relative links use workspace lookup when the required context and filesystem-read scope are available. File actions use the resolved target when found. Copy actions resolve paths asynchronously. Media-preview requests are discarded when stale.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to cd40f

No actionable issue remains from this review; the change is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cd40f

File selection changes, but the inspected actions retain their existing environment and permission boundaries. No new privilege escalation was established. Residual uncertainty concerns delayed actions and end-to-end enforcement after authorization changes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected authority is file access and host/browser actions in the originating connected environment. A working-directory-scoped index narrows candidate selection, but is not itself a filesystem sandbox: existing media issuance supports absolute host paths under filesystem-read authorization. That broader authority predates this PR.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected server policy requires filesystem-read scope for project search, metadata reads, and workspace/media asset issuance; shell opening requires orchestration-operation scope and browser opening requires preview-operation scope. Workspace asset canonicalization separately rejects files outside the canonical workspace root.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Non-media callbacks can finish after navigation without media-style cancellation, but the inspected panel and browser sinks retain the originating scoped thread rather than adopting the newly visible context. Panel state is keyed by that scope. This supports a delayed-action lifecycle limitation, not an established cross-environment security failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider extending originating-context cancellation to delayed editor, browser, reveal, and clipboard actions where navigation should withdraw the user's pending action. This would strengthen lifecycle containment; it is not evidence of an authorization bypass.

…ches cannot pick a hidden twin

Copy relative path and Copy full path now start the clipboard write within
the menu click, with a promise-valued ClipboardItem, while the path resolves.

The workspace index ranks whole-suffix matches ahead of fuzzy ones, so a
truncated result page can hide a second match only when its last file is a
match. The suffix pick now resolves to nothing in that case. Rejecting every
truncated page would disable the fallback, because ordinary nested paths
also match many files fuzzily.

I opened #20861 for #10553. It overlaps with this PR in purpose but not in the cases it reaches, so here are the differences.

this PR (#20071) #20861
Issue #8251 #10553
Where it looks the workspace index paths the thread's own tool activity named: file_change paths, tool path inputs, search results, and command paths read against a cd in the same command
Reaches a file one folder down inside the workspace other checkouts, worktrees under ignored folders, folders outside every project, "No project" threads
When at click at render; the chip switches once metadata confirms the joined path missing and the candidate present
Clients web web and mobile

Both keep an existing root-joined file, as the #8254 review asked, so they compose: a link #20861 leaves alone can still be rescued here at click time. Both touch the chip wiring in ChatMarkdown.tsx, so whichever lands second needs a rebase. I'll do that on my side if this one lands first.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch web-misc-07. I will preserve your commits, merge current main, simplify the implementation and tests, and verify ambiguous or incomplete index results cannot select the wrong file. Landing is handled centrally; I will not merge or babysit this PR.
