Problem

  • bun build compiles a file behind a symbolic link with the tsconfig.json above the link. In a workspace, import "ui/button" compiles packages/ui/button.tsx with apps/web/tsconfig.json. The build can fail: Could not resolve: "preact/jsx-dev-runtime".
  • Resolver::finalize_result (src/resolver/resolver.rs:1571) reads the settings beside the path as spelled, then takes the real path. A module is keyed by its real path: 13 of 30 identical builds used preact, 17 solid-js.

Fix

  • When a lookup went through a link, finalize_result reads the tsconfig.json settings and the package.json type from the real directory, as esbuild does since 0.18.19.
  • A file or link inside node_modules keeps the settings above the link. A module/main pair takes tsconfig.json settings from module only.
  • Only the bundler turns this on (Resolver::settings_from_real_path).
  • Verified: test/bundler/esbuild/tsconfig.test.ts and 3 more files, 57 new cases, 45 fail on main. Self-reviewed: 51 concerns raised, 50 addressed.

Background

Downsides

Notes

Report. No Bun issue reports this defect. It was found by comparison with esbuild, which changed the same function in 0.18.19 (evanw/esbuild@63fd6ff, evanw/esbuild#3284). The nearest report is #28605, for the runtime. This PR does not fix it.

Repro.

apps/web/tsconfig.json jsxImportSource: preact
apps/web/byname.tsx import { Button } from "ui/button"
apps/web/rel.tsx import { Button } from "../../packages/ui/button"
apps/web/node_modules/ui   -> ../../../packages/ui
packages/tsconfig.json jsxImportSource: solid-js
packages/ui/button.tsx     export const Button = () => <button />;

bun build apps/web/byname.tsx: main compiles button.tsx against preact, this PR against solid-js. With rel.tsx as a second entry point and --splitting, 30 builds: main 13 preact and 17 solid-js, this PR 30 solid-js.

What changes. Release builds of main 179664e and of this PR on it.

Layout main this PR
Import by name, tsconfig.json above the real path preact solid-js
Each side installs only its own JSX runtime, as bun install does Could not resolve: "preact/jsx-dev-runtime" builds
The tsconfig.json of the package has extends base lost base applies
By name and by real path in one build, 30 builds 13 and 17 30 and 0
Dev server: first load, then a save of the file preact, then solid-js solid-js both times
bun build --app, server and client preact solid-js
Linked module/main package with a tsconfig.json next to main: by name, by directory, by file react, react, solid-js solid-js on all three, as esbuild 0.18.19 and 0.25.0
imports target that is a link to a file: type from the package.json beside the link from the package.json above the real path

Behaviour changes. No switch is added. A rule that keeps the old result for one route keeps the order dependence.

  • A linked package with no tsconfig.json at or above its real path no longer takes experimentalDecorators, emitDecoratorMetadata and useDefineForClassFields from the tsconfig.json of the application, from any working directory. The build exits 0. A parameter decorator in such a file is dropped, as in every file without experimentalDecorators (js_parser: reject parameter decorators when experimental decorators are off #43321 adds an error).
  • Such a package loses the JSX options of the application too, except in bun build started in the directory of that tsconfig.json. There the tsconfig.json of the working directory is the base of the JSX options (bundler: keep the cwd tsconfig.json out of the per-file JSX base #38805 removes that base). Bun.build has no such base.
  • On main only the file that the application imports by name took these options. A file that it imports did not: main prints preact:div react:button for the two.
  • The tsconfig.json of a linked package is read at its real path, so its extends applies. Before, the path had node_modules in it and extends was dropped (tsconfig_json.rs:361).
  • A module/main pair with no link: the tsconfig.json next to main no longer applies to the module file. resolver: take sideEffects and tsconfig.json of a module/main pair from the module file #46765 has the same line. It reports no JSX or decorator change in 8,158 npm pairs (its sample, not repeated here).
  • bun run and bun test use the tsconfig.json of the working directory for every file (jsxImportSource from nested tsconfig ignored when running from workspace root #28605, Transpile each file with the tsconfig.json nearest to it at runtime #38719). From the application directory, bun build of a by-name import gave the result of bun run. It now gives the result of bun build of the real path.
  • New failures: a malformed tsconfig.json above the real path of a linked file that imports nothing, and a link to a file in a directory that cannot be listed, when the file imports nothing (Cannot read directory). Main fails both when the file has an import.
  • A tsconfig.json whose extends chain does not end: the chain stops after 64 files and the options of the file apply, with a link or without one. Before, the lookup of the directory failed, the file was ignored, and the parsed files leaked.

To keep the old result. Put a tsconfig.json at or above the real path of the package. --tsconfig-override (tsconfig in Bun.build) gives one tsconfig.json to the whole build.

Not fixed here. Each is the same on main, except where it says new.

Order with open PRs.

Design notes.

  • Flag off by default: the three readers of these settings are in src/bundler (ParseTask.rs:292, bundle_v2.rs:7346, transpiler.rs:2839). With the flag on, each runtime resolve through a link pays a directory lookup for settings that nothing reads. It is set in BundleV2::init (workers and the client transpiler copy it in Resolver::for_worker), Transpiler::transform (--no-bundle) and Framework::init_transpiler (dev server, bun build --app).
  • Considered the settings where the bundler creates a module: two creation sites do not use ParseTask::init, and the node_modules case needs the path as spelled.
  • Considered all settings at the real path, as esbuild: sideEffects lists hold paths as spelled. An earlier version did this. It made layouts that main builds one way order-dependent.
  • Considered the real path for node_modules too: a dependency that ships TSX under an isolated install loses the tsconfig.json of the application, and its build fails.
  • The node_modules test has two parts. The first is on the real directory that holds the file or the link to it: the flags of that directory when no link leads to it, else the text of its real path. The second is on the text of the real path of the file. Both run before the directory lookup, so a store link and a file of the symlink backend read no directory.
  • The lookup of the real directory is the one that logs. An earlier version read in silence and removed the cache entry on failure. That removed entries of other lookups.
  • Considered a base of decorator options from the tsconfig.json of the working directory for a file that has no tsconfig.json. On the link route only, it brings the order dependence back. For every file, it changes builds with no link, and it adds the second source of settings that bundler: keep the cwd tsconfig.json out of the per-file JSX base #38805 removes for JSX.
  • type: a lookup through exports or imports sets it from the package.json at the path as spelled. On the real path route it is reset first.

Tests. 57 new cases: tsconfig.test.ts 52, bundler_cjs.test.ts 3, bundler_plugin.test.ts 1, bun-serve-html.test.ts 1. expectBundled.ts gets a symlinks option.

  • 45 fail on a release build of main. 12 pass on main by design: the five ...KeepsTsconfigAboveLink cases (SymlinkedStoreDependency, SymlinkedNodeModulesDirectory, SymlinkedDependencyFile, SymlinkedDependencyFileBehindDirectoryLink, SymlinkedFileInNodeModules) and SymlinkedPackageTsconfigExtendsItself, for cli and api.
  • Each rule fails a case when it is removed (a temporary switch on a debug build, or a release build without the rule): primary && on the tsconfig block (4 cases), the type reset (1), each of the four conditions of the node_modules test (2 each), the end of an extends chain (2, and the leak check), a lookup that does not log (1). The copy in for_worker, the store in transform and the store in init_transpiler each fail a case too.
  • Two cases run bun install with the isolated and the hoisted linker, and build what it links.
  • Release builds, all of test/bundler/: main 7,791 pass and 46 fail, this PR 7,835 pass and 2 fail. The 2 are in bundler_bytecode_portable.test.ts on both: a 5 s timeout, and the case that needs its output. test/bake/: 268 pass on both. test/js/bun/resolve/: 422 of 423 on both. The one is load the same file 10000 times: it takes 4.7 to 5.3 s on both builds against a 5 s limit.
  • The changed files pass with the leak check of the ASAN lane on a debug build. SymlinkedPackageInServerAndClientOfApp is skipped on ASAN builds: bun build --app does not pass that check (test/no-validate-leaksan.txt lists test/bake).
  • The dev server case checks the first bundle. The result after a save was measured by hand.
  • Not run here: Windows and macOS. Cases with a link to a file are skipped on Windows. A directory link is a junction there. No case compares the identity of a module across a link: on Windows it depends on how the root directory is spelled.

Measurements. Release builds of main 179664e and of this PR on it, from one build directory. gdb 16.3 single-step counts, perf_event_open instructions:u, a ptrace syscall counter. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed here.

  • finalize_result, instructions per call: relative import with no link 1,064 to 1,071. Package import with no link 1,127 to 1,135. File link of the symlink backend 1,140 to 1,188. Store link 1,119 to 1,287. Workspace link 1,140 to 1,789, and 1,143 to 1,827 with the file in a subdirectory.
  • bun build of 2,000 stub files with 20,000 import records, 15 interleaved runs: no link +0.03% (ranges overlap), symlink backend +0.05% (ranges overlap), store links +0.48%, workspace links +2.01%. 1,000 files of 4 KB with one linked import each: +0.07% (ranges overlap).
  • Directory-cache lookups for those builds: 124,003 on both with no link, with the symlink backend and with store links. Workspace links 124,003 to 144,003, and 5 more directories read.
  • Syscalls: equal for a by-name build, a store dependency build, a symlink backend build, a runtime resolve through a link and the driver of bun --bun 1.4 canary panics with len 4095 index 4095 on any Module._resolveFilename hook that probes 2+ extensions #31503. A linked file that imports nothing: +3 openat, +4 getdents64.
  • Runtime, instructions per cached Bun.resolveSync: +4 to +16 (6,512 to 6,519 with no link, 12,257 to 12,273 through a directory link). Allocations per call: 3.12 on both.
  • size_of::<Resolver>: 1,248 to 1,256 bytes. Release binary text: 107,556,528 to 107,557,296 bytes.

Self-review. 51 concerns raised, 50 addressed in code, tests or this text. Declined: cases for an import plus a require() of a linked pair. They guard an early exit for the main file that is no longer in the diff. Parts not taken: the resolver hunk of #38805 and todo cases for the two alias layouts (they change builds with no link), cases that pin first-import-wins for store dependencies, an install case that needs a registry, and flag stores inside BundleV2::init (they need writes through pointers that can alias the server transpiler). An earlier, wider version was reviewed first (39 concerns) and was reduced to this shape. Review on this PR found the symlink backend case, a link outside node_modules to a file inside it, and the leak on an endless extends chain. All three are fixed.

…path

`Resolver::finalize_result` read the settings of a file from the directory of
the path as spelled, and took the real path after that. A file that an import
reached through a symbolic link got the tsconfig.json and the package.json
"type" above the link. The bundler keys a module by its real path, so these
settings depended on which import created the module.

With `Resolver::settings_from_real_path` on, the function takes the real path
first. When the path changed, it reads these settings from the real directory,
as esbuild does since 0.18.19. The bundler turns it on. Every other resolver
behaves as before.

A file whose real path is inside node_modules keeps the settings of the path
as spelled.

Only the first path of a `module`/`main` pair takes the tsconfig.json
settings, with a link or without one. Before, the tsconfig.json next to the
`main` file replaced the settings of the `module` file.

`sideEffects` and the owning package.json do not change.

The bundler test harness gets a `symlinks` option.

Walkthrough

The resolver can select module-type and tsconfig settings from a symlinked file’s real-path directory. Bundler and runtime transpiler paths enable this behavior. Tests cover module-type resolution, tsconfig settings, workspace packages, and development-server builds.

Changes

Symlinked File Settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolver real-path settings
src/resolver/resolver.rs, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, src/bundler/transpiler.rs, src/runtime/bake/config/transpiler.rs
The resolver tracks when symlink processing rewrites the primary path. When enabled, it can use settings from the real-path directory, except for real paths inside node_modules. Module-type lookup occurs after symlink rewriting, and tsconfig settings apply to the primary path. The tsconfig extends-chain limit remains 64. Bundler and runtime transpiler paths enable the setting.
Bundler symlink test coverage
test/bundler/expectBundled.ts, test/bundler/bundler_cjs.test.ts, test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts
The bundler test helper creates configured symlinks. CommonJS and plugin tests cover module-type selection through symlinked imports and package imports.
Tsconfig settings test coverage
test/bundler/esbuild/tsconfig.test.ts, test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-html.test.ts
Tests cover real-path tsconfig selection across CLI and API builds, workspace linkers, package entry points, app builds, and directory-access errors. A development-server test checks the JSX runtime paths used by an app and a linked package.

Beyond the inline findings, I also traced the new settings_from_real_path flag: it is set on all three bundler resolvers (BundleV2::init, Transpiler::transform, bake Framework) and copied in the per-worker resolver clone, while init leaves it false so the runtime resolver's settings lookup is unchanged. I also checked that rewritten is set on both set_realpath sites (entry symlink and ancestor-directory symlink), so the real-path lookup is not skipped for either route.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves the tsconfig.json/package.json "type" lookup in Resolver::finalize_result after the symlink rewrite and, under a new bundler-only flag, re-reads those settings from the real path's directory unless it is inside node_modules; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Inline findings on silently dropped decorator settings for linked packages without a tsconfig.json, the --backend=symlink install layout, and the double dir_info_cached retry are substantive enough that a human should weigh the behaviour change before merging.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/resolver/resolver.rs — Users building with --packages=external whose tsconfig "paths" alias and a package name both reach one linked file now get a JSX runtime that changes between identical builds; main gave the same runtime every time. The early return at src/resolver/resolver.rs:1230 keeps result.jsx = self.opts.jsx (resolver.rs:1236) and skips finalize_result, while the by-name route now takes the real-path tsconfig at resolver.rs:1753; both routes key the same real path, so first-import-wins. Fix: route the paths-alias result through finalize_result (or apply the same real-path settings lookup there) so both routes to one module compute the same settings.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: --packages=external, a tsconfig.json "paths" entry pointing at a workspace package's real directory, and the same package also linked into node_modules and imported by name, with a tsconfig.json above the real path whose jsxImportSource differs from the application's. Entry: both imports go through Resolver::resolve; the alias one returns at resolver.rs:1230 with jsx from self.opts.jsx, the by-name one goes through finalize_result and, after this change, picks up the real-path tsconfig at resolver.rs:1733-1753. On main both routes ended with the application's JSX options, so the shared module compiled the same way regardless of which import was resolved first; the PR's own measurement gives main 30 of 30 preact and this PR 18 solid-js and 12 preact. The order dependence is introduced by the change, not inherited. Remedy: make the paths-alias early return apply the same settings lookup as finalize_result so one module gets one set of settings.

Verification: src/resolver/resolver.rs:1230 returns with jsx: self.opts.jsx.clone() and never reaches finalize_result, which merges the real-path tsconfig's jsx at resolver.rs:1753. src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7347 copies resolve_result.jsx only for the first resolution, so whichever route resolves first decides the JSX runtime. On the base both routes agreed; after the PR they differ.

`bun install --backend=symlink` links each file of a dependency to the
package cache. The link is in node_modules and the real path is not, so the
file took its settings from the cache directory. The rule now tests the real
directory that holds the file or the link to it.

An "extends" chain of a tsconfig.json that does not end now stops after 64
files, and the options of the file apply. Before, the lookup of the
directory failed, the file was ignored and the parsed files leaked.

Tests: do not compare module identity across a link (it depends on how the
root is spelled on Windows), skip the `bun build --app` case on ASAN builds,
and check only the first bundle of the dev server.

Thanks for the follow-up commit — the link-directory guard, the bounded extends chain, and the simplified dev-server fixture address the earlier threads on those lines.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked: the MAX_CHAIN loop in load_tsconfig appends exactly once per iteration under the len < MAX_CHAIN guard, so the BoundedArray can no longer overflow and the merge still runs on the truncated chain; the module_type = Unknown reset when at_real_path discards only the value seeded by an exports/imports match (resolver.rs:3888, 4059) — no other path seeds result.module_type for a non-external result before finalize_result; and settings_from_real_path is set at the three bundler sites, copied in the per-worker clone, and left false by Resolver::init, so the runtime resolver is unaffected.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves the module_type and tsconfig reads in Resolver::finalize_result to after the symlink rewrite, gated by a new bundler-only flag, adds a node_modules exclusion helper, and bounds the tsconfig extends chain; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Inline findings remain on the node_modules detection in settings_dir_of_real_path and a test nit, and my earlier thread about silently dropping decorator options for linked packages without a tsconfig.json is still open as a documented behaviour trade-off, so a human should weigh the design before merging.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

A link outside node_modules to a file inside node_modules took the
tsconfig.json and the "type" at the real path of the file.

`settings_dir_of_real_path` now also returns `None` when the real path of
the file is inside node_modules. It still returns `None` when the link to
the file is in node_modules.

New cases:
- A link outside node_modules to a file inside node_modules.
- A link to a file, in a dependency directory that a directory link
  leads to.

The `bun build --app` case asserts the exit code first, with the output of
the build as the message.
