Closed without merge. The onResolve half is withdrawn, and #45408 has the other half. The branch holds only the small change below, so a reopen shows nothing else.

What this PR tried

  • A file that an onResolve callback names is built with the options of the build. The same file through a plain import gets its tsconfig.json and package.json. The first import to land wins, so equal builds can differ.
  • The PR asked the resolver about the named path when the plugin answered, and took its settings.

Why it is withdrawn

  • That call lists the directory of the file, and the resolver lists a directory once per build. A plugin that writes another file there later gets Could not resolve. Of 12 probed flows, 10 fail and 2 get other JSX settings. bun 1.4.3 and esbuild 0.28.2 build them.
  • esbuild 0.28.2 gives a plugin-named file no tsconfig.json or package.json data. It has the same order dependence (54 against 6 of 60 equal builds).

What the branch holds (4b3a677)

Open question for a maintainer

Should a file that an onResolve callback names take tsconfig.json and package.json settings from the resolver? If yes, it needs a way to read them that lists no directory, as a change of its own.

Notes

The 12 flows (10 builds each; bun 1.4.3 and the branch without the resolver call give the same result in all 12):

flow with the resolver call

the named file has an onLoad callback that returns nothing Could not resolve: "./c.js"

the named file is the entry point Could not resolve: "./c.js"
late file that only tsconfig paths can find Could not resolve: "late.js"

tsconfig.json that does not parse above a file that only the plugin names build fails: Unexpected end of file
tsconfig.json written after the plugin named a file of that directory a later import gets react, 1.4.3 gives preact
plugin writes and names a second file in that directory first file preact, second file react, 1.4.3 gives react for both

esbuild 0.28.2, checked for this PR: a plugin-named .jsx file under a tsconfig.json with jsxImportSource: "preact" compiles to React.createElement. A side-effect-only import of a plugin-named file under "sideEffects": false stays in the bundle. Without the plugin the same files give preact/jsx-runtime and the import is dropped.

What the declined-route change fixes. On 1.4.3 a plugin with onResolve({ filter: /.*/ }, () => undefined) makes each file ignore the jsxImportSource of its tsconfig.json and the "sideEffects": false of its package.json.

What the declined-route change costs, in case it lands from this branch:

  • A file reached by a plugin answer (build options) and by a declined import (resolver settings) now depends on the order, as it does in esbuild. 1.4.3 gives the build options in both orders.
  • A files key over a file on disk, reached by its exact spelling and by a declined import of another spelling, depends on the order (react 25, preact 35 of 60). 1.4.3 gives react 60 of 60 there, and the same build with no plugin already depends on the order on 1.4.3 (36 against 24).

History. The first commits applied the settings at the time onResolve answered, for every path whose directory exists. Later commits asked Resolver::resolve for the path after onLoad and required the same bytes back. Review rounds found and fixed a lost side-effect-only import for a virtual path, a missing directory that the resolver remembered, and resolver messages that failed the build. None of those rounds looked at a file written after the resolver call.

…age.json and tsconfig.json

A Bun.build onResolve plugin that answers with a path in the file
namespace made the bundler create the module with fixed defaults: it has
side effects, the module type is unknown, and the JSX and decorator
settings come from the build options. The same file found by the
resolver takes these from the package.json and tsconfig.json that
enclose it. When one build reaches the file both ways, the import that
lands first creates the module, so the output depended on timing.

Resolver::result_for_resolved_file returns what the resolver attaches to
an absolute path, without probing extensions or following symlinks. The
plugin answer builds its ParseTask from that result. A path whose
directory is not on disk, or that is in another namespace, keeps the
defaults.

Status: closed without merge. The change for files that onResolve names is withdrawn, and #45408 has the declined-route change. The reasons are in the closing comment.

How I reproduced the problem that closed it (bun 1.4.3 canary 367d939d9, main 179664ea89, esbuild 0.28.2, Linux x64):

  1. entry.js imports gen:a. gen/a.js is on disk and imports gen:b.
  2. A plugin answers gen:a with gen/a.js. For gen:b it writes gen/c.js and gen/b.js (import c from "./c.js"), then answers with gen/b.js.
  3. 10 builds each: bun 1.4.3 ok 10, esbuild 0.28.2 ok 10, this PR before 4b3a677 Could not resolve: "./c.js" 10.

The branch is reduced to the declined-route change in 4b3a677. bun bd test test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts passes there (78 pass, 3 todo). USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts -t "plugin/file resolved by" fails 1 of 3 on 1.4.3 (the resolver after onResolve declined).

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the ParseTask::init swap in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs: the deleted SAFETY comment's provenance guarantee is preserved (init takes *mut BundleV2 and this is the live &mut), contents_or_fd still ends up INVALID/INVALID because Result::default() sets dirname_fd/file_fd to FD::INVALID and result_for_resolved_file never opens the entry, and the jsx.development override via forced_jsx_development() matches the existing entry-point paths at bundle_v2.rs:2779 and :2891.

Extended reasoning...

Six verified findings are being posted inline, so this note only records what else was examined. The refactor replaces a hand-built ParseTask literal with ParseTask::init(&resolve_result, ...); I confirmed from src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:232-293 that init derives ctx from a *mut BundleV2 with the same write provenance the removed SAFETY comment described, that the fds flow from resolve_result.dirname_fd/file_fd, which src/resolver/result.rs:119-120 defaults to FD::INVALID and finalize_result with follow_symlinks=false never populates, and that known_target, loader, and is_entry_point are re-applied after init as before. The jsx.development override uses the same forced_jsx_development() helper as the entry-point enqueue paths, so the fallback behavior for the non-file / no-dir-info case matches the old literal.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs — Builds using a plugin with a broad onResolve filter that returns undefined for some imports now get a JSX runtime and side-effect setting that differ by which import lands first; the base gave the same values on both paths. The NoMatch branch at bundle_v2.rs:4893 goes through run_resolver to enqueue_parse_task, which overwrites the task's jsx with transpiler.options.jsx at bundle_v2.rs:3763 and uses loader.side_effects() at bundle_v2.rs:3749, while the Success branch now carries tsconfig JSX and package.json sideEffects. Fix: make enqueue_parse_task keep resolve_result.jsx (with forced_jsx_development) and primary_side_effects_data, so all three creation paths agree.

    Extended reasoning...

A plugin registers onResolve({ filter: /.*/ }) that returns { path } for "alias/component" and returns undefined for "./app/component.tsx" (a very common plugin shape).
The undefined answer reaches ResolveValue::NoMatch at bundle_v2.rs:4860 and calls run_resolver at bundle_v2.rs:4893.
run_resolver resolves on the bundle thread and calls enqueue_parse_task at bundle_v2.rs:2659.
enqueue_parse_task builds the task with ParseTask::init, then at bundle_v2.rs:3763 replaces task.jsx with transpiler.options.jsx, dropping the nested tsconfig jsxImportSource, and at bundle_v2.rs:3749 sets input_files side_effects from loader.side_effects(), not from package.json.
The plugin's { path } answer for the same file now takes the new Success branch at bundle_v2.rs:5013-5055, which keeps tsconfig jsx (preact) and NoSideEffectsPackageJson.
Whichever import lands first creates the module, so one build imports preact/jsx-dev-runtime and another imports react/jsx-dev-runtime for the same component; a side-effect-only import is kept or dropped by timing.
On the base both branches used…

Verification: normal — acknowledged in diff: the PR description's "Not in this PR" note says the run_resolver/enqueue_parse_task path still "drops the side effects (#41380) and replaces the tsconfig JSX (#36269)", but does not note that this now creates a NEW join-order divergence with the Success branch for broad-filter plugins, which violates the PR's own stated invariant ("a join must give the same…

✅ @robobun, your commit b87696426bdb56bda77239e36256aba8b34360b5 passed in Build #117530! 🎉

🧪   To try this PR locally:

bunx bun-pr 43190

That installs a local version of the PR into your bun-43190 executable, so you can run:

bun-43190 --bun

…es, after onLoad

Review findings on the first version:

- It applied package.json and tsconfig.json settings to every onResolve
path whose directory exists. A module that only the plugin can name
(a path that is not on disk, a file in `files`, a spelling the resolver
does not print) lost a side-effect-only import under
"sideEffects": false, and an exact "sideEffects" list missed a path
  that was not normalized.
- It read the directory when onResolve answered, before onLoad ran. A
file that onLoad writes next to the module was then missing from the
  directory list.
- The path where every onResolve callback returns nothing still dropped
the tsconfig JSX and the package.json side effects, so that path and
  the onResolve path disagreed.

Now the bundler asks the resolver for the path itself and takes the
result only when the resolver answers with the same bytes. It asks after
onLoad is done, or at once when no onLoad callback matches.
ParseTask::set_resolver_result holds the field mapping for this and for
ParseTask::init. enqueue_parse_task keeps the resolver's JSX and side
effects, as resolve_import_records does, and an in-memory file on that
path gets the JSX options of the build.

Resolver::result_for_resolved_file and the follow_symlinks flag are
gone.

Reply to the finding on the path where every onResolve callback returns nothing (run_resolver and enqueue_parse_task): fixed in ea26d12.

  • enqueue_parse_task keeps the resolver's JSX (plus forced_jsx_development()) and primary_side_effects_data, as resolve_import_records does.
  • The FileMap branch of run_resolver gives an in-memory file the JSX options of the build before it calls enqueue_parse_task, as the FileMap branch of resolve_import_records does.
  • Tests: the the resolver after onResolve declined variants. One checks the four settings with an onResolve({ filter: /.*/ }, () => undefined) plugin. The other forces both creation orders against an onResolve path for the same file.

The side-effects line is the same change as in #41380, and #36269 changes the JSX line. The one that lands second drops its copy.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked three things in adopt_resolver_result and ruled them out: it only runs from on_resolve/on_load on the bundler thread, the same thread run_resolver already uses transpiler.resolver from; at all three call sites the adopted side_effects is written before the should_copy_for_bundling override, so file-loader assets still end up NoSideEffectsPureData; and the enqueue_parse_task switch from loader.side_effects() to primary_side_effects_data matches what the resolver-created sibling paths (bundle_v2.rs:2772, 2874, 6758) already do.

Extended reasoning...

One confirmed finding is being posted inline (the resolver directory-cache snapshot taken for an onResolve path that is not yet on disk), so the review body is limited to recording what else was examined. I traced the new adopt_resolver_result helper through its three call sites (onResolve success with no onLoad plugin, LoadValue::NoMatch for file-namespace paths, and LoadValue::Success), confirmed it runs on the bundler thread like the existing run_resolver use of transpiler.resolver, confirmed the file-loader NoSideEffectsPureData override still lands after the adopted value at every site, and confirmed that the resolver Result's fds are entry-cache-owned so discarding a non-adopted result leaks nothing. The ParseTask::init refactor into ..Default::default() plus set_resolver_result preserves the old defaults (stage, callbacks, loader, secondary path). The enqueue_parse_task change to resolver-derived side effects and jsx.development-only override aligns that path with the resolver-created siblings rather than diverging from them.

Comment thread src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs
…is on disk

The resolver remembers a directory that it did not find. A plugin can
name a path in a directory that does not exist yet (a virtual module)
and create the directory later in the same build. The probe for the
virtual module then left the directory marked as not found, and a file
that the resolver found there later lost its package.json and
tsconfig.json settings.

adopt_resolver_result now returns before it calls the resolver when the
path is not on disk, so a virtual module touches no resolver cache.

…solve path is adopted

adopt_resolver_result runs Resolver::resolve for a path that onResolve
named. The resolver logs into the build log on the way: a directory that
it can traverse but not list, a tsconfig.json that does not parse. The
result of the call was ignored when the path was not adopted, but the
log entry stayed and failed a build that main completes.

The call now runs against a scratch log (Resolver::scoped_log). The
messages move to the build log only when the module takes the resolver's
result, and then they are the messages that the build gets when the
resolver finds the file.

Apply build JSX options to FileMap entry points.

This branch passes the FileMap result directly to enqueue_entry_item. ParseTask::init then uses its JSX settings, while the later assignment only changes development. A files entry point with jsxImportSource, runtime, factory, or fragment settings can therefore use default JSX settings, unlike a FileMap import through run_resolver at Line 2378.

Clone the selected build JSX options into file_map_result before calling enqueue_entry_item.

On the CodeRabbit note about a JSX entry point in files (bundle_v2.rs:3212, outside this diff): that is the behavior on main, and #38609 is the open fix for it. It makes FileMap::resolve store the JSX options of the build in the Result, which covers entry points and imports in one place. This PR does not touch the entry-point path, so I leave it to #38609.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the raw-pointer handling in adopt_resolver_result (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs): the scoped_log guard is dropped at the end of the inner block, before probe_log goes out of scope and before transpiler.resolver.log_mut() is re-borrowed, and the &mut *resolver reborrow is the only live access during resolve, so the aliasing there looks sound.

Extended reasoning...

The remaining candidate in the ruled-out list (tsconfig errors dropped when the probe does not adopt) is the same class as the posted finding about probe_log being discarded, so it adds nothing. The one concrete thing examined beyond that was the unsafe block: scoped_log swaps the resolver's log slot via addr_of_mut! without materializing &mut Resolver, the ResolverLogScope restores it on drop at the end of the inner block, and only afterwards is probe_log appended to the real log and transpiler used again. The borrow of self.graph.input_files follows the last use of transpiler, so there is no overlapping mutable borrow of self.

Comment thread src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs Outdated
…ly what a failed call logged

The resolver parses a package.json or tsconfig.json once per process.
When the call for an onResolve path is the first read of a directory,
its parse errors are reported then or never: a later read of the cached
directory does not repeat them. The previous commit dropped them when
the path was not adopted, so a build that main fails (the module imports
a sibling and the resolver reads the directory) completed without the
error.

The messages now reach the build log whenever the call succeeds. They
are dropped only when the call fails: then they are about the call
itself, for example a directory that the user may traverse but not list,
and nothing else in the build asks the resolver about that path.

On Windows the path with a doubled separator does not give a resolver
result, so the build stays silent, as on main. The case that pins a
resolver call that succeeds without adoption now uses a symlinked
directory and runs on POSIX only. The byte-identical path runs on every
platform.

src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3210-3220
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Copy the configured JSX options into FileMap entry results. file_map.resolve() returns a default bun_resolver::Result, so ParseTask::init gives the entry task default JSX settings. The entry path at src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3210-3220 does not replace them before enqueue_entry_item. In contrast, the FileMap import path copies transpiler.options.jsx and applies forced_jsx_development(). A JSX FileMap entry with non-default options can therefore produce different bundled output from the same module reached as an import.

At the FileMap entry boundary, assign self.transpiler.options.jsx.clone() to file_map_result.jsx and set its development field with self.transpiler.options.forced_jsx_development(), matching the FileMap import path before calling enqueue_entry_item.

src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:4632-4656
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Append probe diagnostics only after accepting the resolver result. PackageJSON::parse can log an error and return None; parse_package_json converts this to Ok(None), so Resolver::resolve can still return Ok(Result). A plugin-selected file can then produce a resolver result that adopt_resolver_result rejects because it is external or because finalization changes its path, such as through a symlink. The current code appends that probe log before the rejection. append_to_with_recycled preserves the error count, and generate_from_cli returns BuildFailed when the log has errors after parsing. Move probe_log.append_to_with_recycled(...) below the rejection guard so diagnostics from rejected probes do not fail an otherwise usable plugin-selected module build.

…own directory errors

When the call fails, the resolver has already parsed and cached the
package.json and tsconfig.json of every directory above the one it could
not list. Their parse errors were dropped with the rest of the scratch
log, and a later import below such a directory did not report them
again, so a build that main fails completed.

The messages of a failed call now reach the build log too, without the
"Cannot read directory" errors: nothing else asks the resolver to list
that directory.

The two tests that are skipped on some platforms run concurrently like
the rest.

🟡 Minor · Preserve configured JSX options for standalone-module parse tasks. · bundle_v2.rs:3766-3769

src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3766-3769
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve configured JSX options for standalone-module parse tasks. A non-external standalone-module result can reach enqueue_parse_task with a .jsx or .tsx path. Result::default() supplies default JSX options, and this code overwrites only development. The parser then uses those incomplete options, so configured jsxImportSource, runtime, or factory settings can be lost. Populate the standalone resolver result with the active JSX options, as ordinary resolver results do. Data URLs use Loader::Dataurl by default, and framework built-in code does not establish a JSX loader, so the standalone-module path is the supported trigger here.

Copy the build JSX options into FileMap entry points. FileMap::result_for_key initializes jsx with defaults. ParseTask::set_resolver_result copies those defaults into the parse task. The FileMap import path instead copies self.transpiler.options.jsx, so entry-point JSX can ignore the configured runtime, factory, fragment, and import-source settings.

#45408 covers the declined half of this PR by another route. A declined import now goes through resolve_import_records, so it gets the tsconfig settings with no adoption step.

The other half, settings for a file that an onResolve callback names, is not in #45408. Two facts about that half:

The policy for the named-file case needs a maintainer's decision.

I close this PR. The change for files that onResolve names is withdrawn, and #45408 has the rest.

Why the onResolve half is withdrawn. To give such a file the tsconfig.json and package.json settings of the resolver, this PR asked the resolver about the path when the plugin answered. That call lists the directory of the file at that time, and the resolver lists a directory once per build. A plugin that names a file and writes another file next to it in a later callback then gets Could not resolve:

// entry.js: import "gen:a";        gen/a.js (on disk): import "gen:b";
build.onResolve({ filter: /^gen:a$/ }, () => ({ path: join(root, "gen/a.js") }));
build.onResolve({ filter: /^gen:b$/ }, () => {
  writeFileSync(join(root, "gen/c.js"), `export default "c";`);
  writeFileSync(join(root, "gen/b.js"), `import c from "./c.js"; console.log(c);`);
  return { path: join(root, "gen/b.js") };
});
build 10 builds
bun 1.4.3 ok 10
esbuild 0.28.2 ok 10
this PR before 4b3a677 Could not resolve: "./c.js" 10

I probed 12 flows of this kind: a late file next to the named file, in a parent directory, in node_modules, behind tsconfig paths, a tsconfig.json written late, a tsconfig.json that does not parse, the onLoad call sites, and an entry point. With the resolver call all 12 differ from 1.4.3: 10 fail and 2 build with other JSX settings. Without it all 12 are equal to 1.4.3.

The order dependence that this PR wanted to remove is behavior that esbuild has too. esbuild 0.28.2 gives a file that a plugin names no tsconfig.json or package.json data. One file reached by a plugin answer and by a plain import gets the tsconfig JSX in 54 of 60 equal esbuild builds and the default in 6.

The rest. An import that every onResolve callback declines must keep the JSX and the side effects of the resolver. #45408 gives that result by another route (it deletes run_resolver and enqueue_parse_task), and #46783 has the side-effects line. A third copy does not help.

The branch. 4b3a677 reduces it to the declined-route change (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, +9 -3) and to tests that pin the onResolve route as it is on main: compare. A reopen shows only that. Its tests hold four of these flows: a late file next to the named file, in the parent directory, behind an onResolve that declines, and a late tsconfig.json.

Open question for a maintainer. Should a file that an onResolve callback names take tsconfig.json and package.json settings from the resolver? If yes, that needs a way to read the settings that lists no directory, as a change of its own. It would also drop a side-effect-only import of such a file under "sideEffects": false, which 1.4.3 and esbuild keep.
