What does this PR do?

Adds b.bytes, a schema type for the bytes of an argument, and declares thirty-five functions in .bind.ts files. They parsed a CallFrame by hand; now their Rust bodies receive converted arguments. Thirty-one of them take a b.bytes; the other four are the stringify functions. b.bytes also replaces the three older ways to get at the bytes or the kind of an argument, which are removed.

stringOrBuffer below is b.bytes({ from: ["string", "buffer"] }), and parsed is { from: ["string", "buffer", "blob"], otherwise: "toString", refuse: ["undefined", "null"] }.

Function Declared as
Bun.gzipSync(data, options), deflateSync data: stringOrBuffer, { windowBits, level: b.f64.loose.allowBigInt.optional, library: b.string.utf8.nullable }, returns b.bufferSource
Bun.gunzipSync(data, options), inflateSync the same, with memLevel and strategy
Bun.zstdCompressSync(data, options) data: stringOrBuffer, { level: b.f64.loose.allowBigInt.optional }, returns b.bufferSource
Bun.zstdDecompressSync(data) data: stringOrBuffer, returns b.bufferSource
Bun.zstdCompress(data, options), zstdDecompress(data) data: b.bytes({ from: ["string", "buffer"], held: "pinned" }), the same options
Bun.hash(data, seed) and its twelve algorithms data: b.bytes(parsed), seed: b.any, returns b.u32 or b.u64.asBigInt
Bun.password.hashSync(password, algorithm) password: stringOrBuffer, algorithm: a union of nothing, a label and { algorithm, cost, timeCost, memoryCost }, returns b.string.utf8
Bun.password.verifySync(password, hash, algorithm) stringOrBuffer twice, algorithm: b.string.utf8.nullable, returns b.bool
Bun.password.hash, verify b.bytes({ from: ["string", "buffer"], otherwise: "toString", refuse: ["undefined"], held: "copied" }), the same algorithm
Bun.randomUUIDv5(name, namespace, encoding) name: stringOrBuffer, namespace: b.bytes({ from: ["string", "buffer"], string: "asIs", held: "handle" }), encoding: a union of a string and anything else
Bun.JSON5.parse(input) b.bytes(parsed)
Bun.TOML.parse(input) b.bytes({ ...parsed, shared: "copied" })
Bun.YAML.parse(input) b.bytes({ from: ["string", "buffer", "blob"], otherwise: "toString", shared: "copied", held: "handle" })
Bun.XML.parse(input, options) b.bytes({ ...parsed, string: "asIs", held: "handle" }), options: b.any
Bun.JSONC.parse(input) b.bytes({ from: ["string"], otherwise: "toString", refuse: ["undefined", "null"] })
TOML.stringify, JSON5.stringify, YAML.stringify, XML.stringify value, replacer, space: b.any. TOML.stringify ignores space, so it declares length: 3 and not the argument
Bun.indexOfLine(buffer, offset), which had a schema buffer: b.bytes({ from: ["buffer"] }), where it was b.bufferSource.bytes.allowShared

The Rust files under src/runtime lose 1,764 lines and gain 688; the schemas are 296 lines. HashObject.rs goes from 306 lines to 64, and an algorithm is a function of its input:

pub(crate) fn wyhash(data: &[u8], seed: JsLocal<'_>) -> u64 {
    bun_wyhash::Wyhash::hash(seed_of(seed), data)
}

pub(crate) fn adler32(data: &[u8]) -> u32 {
    bun_hash::Adler32::hash(data)
}

Thirteen of the thirty-five take capability: "none" and twelve "heap", so they cannot run JavaScript. The other ten run it (stringify, YAML.parse, and XML.parse for its options) or schedule a job (password.hash, verify, zstdCompress, zstdDecompress).

The helper that TOML, JSON5, JSONC, YAML and XML.parse share converted the input, with three enums to say how each of them wants it, and set up the parse. The schemas say the first now, so the enums are gone and the helper is the arena, the log and the source.

b.bytes

Functions that take "a string or a buffer" differ in which values they take, in what becomes of anything else, and in how long they need the bytes. b.bytes takes those as named options, in any order.

Option Values, the default first Meaning
from "string", "buffer", "blob" what is taken without ToString: a string or a String object; a typed array, DataView, ArrayBuffer or SharedArrayBuffer; a Blob whose bytes are in memory, where a file, here or in S3, throws
otherwise "throw", "toString" anything else
refuse "undefined", "null" with "toString": these throw, and are not "undefined" and "null"
string "utf8", "asIs" a string is its UTF-8, or stays a bun_core::String, Latin-1 or UTF-16
shared "borrowed", "copied" the bytes of a shared buffer, which another thread can write
held "borrowed", "handle", "copied", "pinned" what the body gets
held string The body gets
"borrowed" "utf8" &'a [u8]
"handle" "utf8" JsBytes<'a>
"handle" "asIs" StringOrJsBytes<'a>
"copied" "utf8" Vec<u8>
"pinned" "utf8" PinnedBytes

Borrowed. The bytes are where they are. A string is converted into the frame of the host function, unless it is stored as ASCII already. JavaScript can detach, resize or free a buffer, so this is for a function that cannot run it: with capability: "js" it is a build error.

A handle is for a function that can. JsBytes::get borrows the bytes from cx.heap, and whatever runs JavaScript takes &mut JsScope, so the compiler refuses it until the slice is gone. Each get reads the pointer and the length of a buffer again. This is YAML.parse:

pub(crate) fn parse<'a>(cx: &mut JsScope<'a>, input: JsBytes<'a>) -> JsResult<JSValue> {
    MarkedArgumentBuffer::new(|roots| {
        let mut pending = Vec::new();
        // SAFETY: parsing runs no JavaScript. Nor does making the values: what would is left in `pending`. What throws
        // returns without reading `input` again.
        let global = unsafe { cx.heap.global() };
        let result = parse_to_values(global, input.get(&cx.heap), roots, &mut pending)?;
        let global = cx.global();
        for PendingProperty { mapping, key, value } in pending {
            mapping.put_may_be_index(global, &key.to_bun_string(global)?, value)?;
        }
        Ok(result)
    })
}

With string: "asIs" the body gets either the string or the handle, which also tells a string from a buffer: randomUUIDv5 reads a namespace that is a string as a UUID or the name of one, and one that is a buffer as its 16 bytes.

Copied bytes are the body's. Pinned bytes are for a job on another thread: a string is thread-isolated, a buffer is a GC-rooted PinnedArrayBuffer, and a resizable one is copied, as StringOrBuffer::from_js_async does. PinnedBytes is Send through ThreadIsolated, which moved from bun_runtime to bun_jsc for it.

A shared buffer is borrowed like any other, as on main. TOML.parse and YAML.parse say shared: "copied": their parsers read a byte again and count on what it was. JSC does the same: toBase64, indexOf and TextDecoder.decode read a shared buffer where it is, and sort sorts a copy.

The kind of the value is checked, and a string converted, in the order of the arguments. The bytes of a buffer are read, copied or pinned after every argument is converted, because a conversion can run JavaScript.

In C++ the first three options are one structural template argument, IDLBytes<Sink, BytesOptions { .fromString = true, .. }>, and there is one converter, which b.string.utf8 now uses too. It fills either of two sinks: JSBytesView, with the UTF-8 in the frame, or JSBlobOrStringOrBuffer, with the WTF::String, from which Rust copies, pins, or reads the string as it is. In Rust one function, StringOrJsBytes::from_extern, decodes the second.

An option that cannot apply is a build error: refuse without "toString", string where no string is taken, shared where no buffer is taken or held: "copied" copies it anyway. So is what no function needs, which is not written: "asIs" without "handle" or that copies a shared buffer; "pinned" that takes a Blob or copies a shared buffer; a "pinned" argument next to another or next to a "borrowed" one; .optional, or a place in a dictionary, a union or an array.

What b.bytes replaces

Removed Its users Now
b.bufferSource.bytes, as &[u8] tests b.bytes({ from: ["buffer"] })
.bytes.allowShared, as PossiblySharedBytes<'a> Bun.indexOfLine the same. The body still searches with index_of_char_raw, which does not assert that the byte it found is still there
.withValue, as WithValue<'a, T> tests string: "asIs", where the body has to tell a string from a buffer

PossiblySharedBytes kept a shared buffer from ever being a &[u8]. Thirty-one functions now borrow one as a &[u8], as they did on main through StringOrBuffer, so one function with a type of its own said something about shared memory that the rest of the tree does not hold to. b.bufferSource itself, with_bytes and .arrayBuffer are as they were. bun_jsc no longer depends on bun_highway.

The UTF-8 of a string in JSStringUTF8View is in a WTF::MallocSpan. A WTF::Vector holds at most 231 − 1 elements, which is less than the UTF-8 of a string can be. The span is in a std::optional, because ~MallocSpan calls free of null too, and most strings need no heap.

What else the bindgen gained

  • unsafe fn JsHeap::global(). Much of the older API takes a &JSGlobalObject only to allocate or to throw, and cx.global() was the only way to one, so a function that calls it had to ask for "js" and could not borrow a buffer. The contract is that nothing the global object is passed to runs JavaScript, and that after a throw, which tells the debugger, the body returns without reading what it borrowed. There are six uses. TOML.parse, JSON5.parse, JSONC.parse and XML.parse: the keys of the result are primitives, its properties are defined with putDirect, putDirectIndex and putDirectMayBeIndex, and a TOML date is Temporal.*.from of a primitive string. YAML.parse: the same, and a key that is not a primitive waits until the input is let go. The error of password.hashSync and verifySync: it makes an Error and a string, and defines code.
  • b.u64.asBigInt: a result that is always a BigInt.
  • b.namespace(functions, { call: "wyhash" }): a namespace that can itself be called.
  • heap.create_uint8_array_from_box(bytes) and heap.create_buffer_from_box(bytes), which take over the allocation.
  • heap.invalid_arguments(..): what throw_invalid_arguments throws. csrf_jsc.rs had its own.

JSGlobalObject::throw_out_of_memory_value threw without the validation scope that throw_out_of_memory has. A bindgen body that fails with an AllocError goes through it, and the next exception check aborted under BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. The allocation-failure tests in zstd.test.ts found it; bindgen.fail("outOfMemory") covers it.

Removed with their last user: JSValue::put_host_functions, folded into create_host_function_object, impl Default for Argon2Params, and bun_alloc::c_thunks::mi_free_ctx.

The copies that password.hash and verify take of the password and the hash are zeroed before they are freed on every path, an argument error included: they are a Sensitive from the first line of the body.

Not in this PR

Bun.markdown: render and react call back into JavaScript, all four read their options in the body, and they pin a buffer by hand.

Behaviour

Compared with main on 175,056 calls in 27 corpora, on debug builds with ASAN and BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. main here is 21620e2, where the branch started. The merge base, f0c6cbc, is 7 commits later, and one of them changes a function here: #45593, YAML.parse of a key that is a sequence or a mapping. So every call was run again on CI's release builds of d8f6884 and of 4334326, the parent of the merge base, which has it. The same 20,710 calls differ, and no other. 458 more calls, written for #45593, all give the same there.

  • Every function gets its data as a string (empty, ASCII, Latin-1, UTF-16, a lone surrogate, a NUL, long, a rope, a substring, an atom), a String object and a subclass of it, every kind of typed array at every offset, a DataView, an ArrayBuffer, their shared, resizable, growable, length-tracking, out-of-bounds and detached forms, wasm memory, a Blob, a slice of one, a File, Bun.file, an fd, Bun.stdin, an S3 file, and 39 values that are none of these.
  • Options and seeds get every primitive, boxed values, and numbers around every power of two up to 270 and beyond, as numbers, strings, BigInts, boxed BigInts, valueOf and Symbol.toPrimitive.
  • Getters, toString and valueOf of a later argument log, throw, write to an earlier buffer, detach it, transfer it, shrink it, grow it, or free it, collect and allocate over it: 13 kinds of buffer, 18 actions, 70 hooks.
  • 59,400 random tuples of hostile values. Every way to call a function: this values, apply, bind, new, Reflect.construct, a Proxy, a getter, a species constructor, an array callback, another realm, 70,000 arguments.
  • Real data: every compressed format to every function and library, every windowBits and level, a lying ISIZE, several members, trailing garbage, truncation, a bad CRC, zstd frames of each kind, 7,997 mutated streams; hash inputs of 0 to 300 bytes; 105 spellings of a PHC string; randomUUIDv5 against a reference; documents of each format with every scalar, odd keys, anchors, cycles, entities and nesting up to the stack overflow, and 10,500 mutated ones.
  • 38 polluted realms: accessors on Object.prototype and Array.prototype, indexed accessors, replaced or deleted globals, Temporal, error constructors, Error.prepareStackTrace.
  • A result is compared with its property order, prototypes and descriptors, and an error with its prototype chain, own keys and first two stack frames. The shape of every function and namespace is a row too.

main was run twice. It agrees with itself on all but 2 calls, where it reads freed memory. 154,346 calls give the same, among them every hash of every input, seed and length, every compressed and decompressed byte, and every parsed and stringified document. A script puts each of the other 20,710 in one class, and fails on one it does not know. The calls were recorded at d8f6884.

Those 20,710 are few things seen many times, so what is counted below is cases. A case is one change on one API. Functions that share a schema are one API: the four zlib functions, the sync zstd pair, the async zstd pair, the sync password pair, the async password pair. Bun.hash is counted apart from its twelve algorithms. For the wording of an error, a case is one change of message. A script counts them from the same recordings. Thirteen more were checked outside the corpora: main crashes on them, they are races, or what changes is a cost and not a result.

Cases
bug → bug 2
bug → non-bug 17
non-bug → bug 0
non-bug → non-bug 45
bug → bug (2)
Call main Now Cases
gzipSync(shared, { library: "libdeflate" }) while another thread writes the buffer output that does not decompress the same: the buffer is read where it is 1, outside the corpora
zstdCompress(new Uint8Array(30_000_000)), then .buffer.transfer(), and what that returned is collected while the job runs the job reads memory that has been freed, in 1.4.3 too: the output decompresses to bytes of a later allocation the same: PinnedArrayBuffer holds a large typed array that has no ArrayBuffer yet, and does not pin it 1, outside the corpora
bug → non-bug (17)

In 10 of these a call that returned now throws: the first four rows but JSON5.parse and XML.parse. They do the same in 1.4.3 as on main, so they are breaking changes, and deliberate ones.

Call main Now Cases
{ level: x }, and { windowBits: x } of gunzipSync and inflateSync, where x is a string, an object or a BigInt beyond 32 bits: "4294967297", 4294967297n, "Infinity", { valueOf: () => 2 ** 32 + 3 } it wraps, so these are levels 1, 1, 0 and 3, while the number 4294967297 is refused converted to a number, and then treated as that number is. "1" and 1n work as they did 3: zlib; zstdCompressSync; zstdCompress
a file where bytes are taken: Bun.file(path), a slice of one, an fd, Bun.stdin, a Blob made of one, or an S3 file for Bun.hash; an S3 file for the parsers the hash of "", whatever the file holds, or whether it exists; {}; "Unexpected end of input"; null; "XML document must have a root element" TypeError "File blob cannot be used here", as TOML.parse(Bun.file(path)) already was. A Blob in memory is read as it was 6: Bun.hash; its twelve algorithms; TOML.parse; JSON5.parse; YAML.parse; XML.parse
Bun.hash(), Bun.hash(undefined), Bun.hash(null) the hash of "", of "undefined", of "null" TypeError "data must be a string, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView or Blob", as Bun.sha, CryptoHasher, node:crypto and zlib.crc32 throw. Anything else is converted to a string as it was 2: Bun.hash; its twelve algorithms
password.hash(undefined), password.verify(undefined, hash), password.verify(password, undefined) the text "undefined" is hashed or verified. As a hash it is none, so the promise rejects with PASSWORD_UNSUPPORTED_ALGORITHM TypeError, thrown and not rejected, as hashSync and verifySync throw 1
randomUUIDv5(name, namespace) where converting namespace to a string detaches, transfers or grows name's buffer the UUID of the bytes that were there: it reads memory that has been given up, and two runs disagree the UUID of what the buffer holds then 1
the same, and it shrinks a resizable buffer the process dies: ASAN reports a SEGV in SHA1::update the UUID of what is left 1, outside the corpora
YAML.parse(shared) while another thread writes the buffer the process panics, in 1.4.3 too: assertion failed: self.input[pos.cast()] == unit parses a copy 1, outside the corpora
TOML.parse(shared) while another thread writes the buffer a build with assertions panics in toml::Scanner::skip_comment parses a copy 1, outside the corpora
password.hash(new Uint32Array(n)), and either argument of verify: the size of the copy that the GC is told of the number of elements: 1 MiB for 4 MiB the number of bytes 1, outside the corpora
non-bug → bug (0)

None. Checked outside the corpora, because it takes gigabytes: a string of 230 characters of which one is not ASCII gives Bun.hash.adler32, TOML.parse and randomUUIDv5 what it gives them on main.

non-bug → non-bug (45)
What Cases
The wording of an error. The class, the prototype chain, the own keys and the stack are the same, and so is the code but in the last one. "Expected buffer to be a string or buffer", "Expected password to be a string or TypedArray for 'hash'." and "The "name" argument must be of type string or BufferSource" are each "data must be a string, ArrayBuffer or ArrayBufferView", with the name of the argument. "Expected options to be an object" is "ZlibCompressionOptions must be an object". "Expected library to be a string" is "ZlibCompressionOptions.library must be a string". "Expected algorithm to be a string for 'hash'.", and the same for 'verify', is "algorithm must be a string", "PasswordHashOptions.algorithm must be a string" or "PasswordHashOptions must be an object". "Expected a string to parse" is "input must be a string, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView or Blob", or "input must be a string" for JSONC.parse. ERR_MISSING_ARGS "Not enough arguments to 'hash'. Expected 1, got 0.", and "to 'verify'. Expected 2", is ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE "password must be a string, ArrayBuffer or ArrayBufferView", or "hash must be" 11
Which of two errors is reported, when two arguments are wrong. main looked at a later argument first. Once the data is refused, the getters of the options do not run 7: zlib; sync zstd; async zstd; sync password; async password; randomUUIDv5; XML.parse
The order of conversions is the order of the arguments: toString of the data runs before the getters of the options 7: zlib; sync zstd; async zstd; sync password; async password; randomUUIDv5; XML.parse
A buffer is copied once every argument is converted. password.verify(buffer, { toString() { .. } }), where toString of the hash writes to the password's buffer or detaches it. main had copied the password by then. Now what the buffer holds after the conversions is verified, as it already was when algorithm did the same 1
More lenient. { level: Object(1n) } and { level: { valueOf: () => 1n } } threw "Conversion from 'BigInt' to 'number' is not allowed." They are treated as 1n is 3: zlib; zstdCompressSync; zstdCompress
new String("") is treated as "" is: { library: new String("") } is no library, where it threw, and { algorithm: new String("") } is "Expected options.algorithm to be a string", where it was "unknown algorithm" 3: zlib; hashSync; password.hash
More lenient. zstdDecompressSync(data, 5) and zstdDecompress(data, 5) threw "Expected options to be an object", and zstdDecompress(data, { level: 99 }) "Compression level must be between 1 and 22", for options they have none of. The second argument is not looked at. For zstdDecompress, where it was: its level getter, the valueOf of that and a Proxy's trap do not run, so one that throws, a Symbol or null does not fail the call, and one that writes to the data does not change what is decompressed 2: each of them
Stricter. The options of password.hash and hashSync are read whole: algorithm, cost, timeCost and memoryCost. main read cost or the other two, depending on algorithm. So a getter of one that does not count runs: if it throws, the call throws, where it returned, and if it changes the password's buffer, that is what is hashed 2: each of them
More getters run, as above, and nothing else changes. The value of a member that does not count is not looked at 2: each of them
A call that the body refuses has had its data converted first. Every argument is converted before the body runs, and the body is where a level, a library, an algorithm or a length is checked. main checked those first. The call throws what it threw. Before it does, password.hash(data, "nope") copies the data; zstdCompress(data, { level: 99 }) copies a resizable buffer or converts a string that is not ASCII; the sync functions convert such a string; TOML.parse and YAML.parse copy a shared buffer of more than 231 − 1 bytes 7, outside the corpora: zlib; sync zstd; async zstd; sync password; async password; TOML.parse; YAML.parse

Three tests in zstd.test.ts said that the options are evaluated before the input is validated. Now the input's type is checked, then the options are evaluated, then the input's bytes are captured. The tests that say the options are evaluated before the input is captured, which is what keeps a getter from leaving a dangling pointer, pass as they were.

Performance

Per call, on CI's bun-linux-x64 of fc76b3d and of 4334326 on main. That is the parent of the merge base, f0c6cbc, which CI did not build. Each call runs N and 4N times in fresh processes on a reserved core, under perf stat; a number is the difference over 3N, from the least of 5 interleaved rounds. A copy of main's binary measured as a third build differs from main by at most 6.4% in cycles, 8.9% in time and 0.5% in instructions. Cycles are user mode only; time has the kernel's share too. An await row has the job's thread in it.

  • A short string costs less than half. It is read where it is, or converted into the frame, with nothing allocated.
  • A Blob costs 20 cycles more. It is tested for last, and asked for its bytes twice: in argument order, to refuse a file, and again once every argument is converted.
  • A shared buffer costs what any buffer does, at every size.
  • indexOfLine of 64 bytes costs 3.6 cycles more, in 12 more instructions. It calls the function that reads a buffer, which every b.bytes shares; b.bufferSource.bytes had a copy of it inlined.
  • semver.order and glob.match, which take a b.string.utf8, run 9 and 6 fewer instructions.
  • YAML.parse, XML.parse and the async zstd pair, which take JsBytes, StringOrJsBytes or PinnedBytes, run from 2.0% fewer instructions to 0.4% more. In time they are from 6.6% faster to 3.2% slower, XML.parse of a string, a row where the control is 5.6% off.

How did you verify your code works?

  • The comparison above.
  • Bun.indexOfLine, whose schema changed: 2,026 calls, with every kind of buffer, offset and hook, give what they give on main. The functions that take a b.string.utf8, whose converter is the one b.bytes uses (semver, Glob, which, CSRF, os.userInfo, $.braces and others): 760 calls with 38 kinds of value give what they give on 4334326.
  • At d8f6884, 8,132 calls again with BUN_JSC_collectContinuously=1: the password functions, randomUUIDv5, the parsers, the async zstd pair and indexOfLine, and bindgen.test.ts too. Each gives what the plain run gave. At 4a58c2a, 47,578 calls the same way, and 463 written for it with BUN_JSC_slowPathAllocsBetweenGCs=3 and zombie mode, where the inputs are reachable only through the call's arguments and the hooks free, collect and allocate. Each gives what the plain run gave, but for 3 where the engine's own "is not a constructor" for new (f.bind(null))() lacks originalLine and originalColumn. main does that too.
  • In no polluted realm, and with no hook, did JavaScript run inside a "none" or "heap" body.
  • All but the async zstd pair near the stack limit, inside a Worker, with a shared buffer that another thread grows, and with worker.terminate() during the call.
  • test/internal/bindgen.test.ts: what b.bytes takes and refuses for each from, otherwise and refuse; that a buffer is read, or copied, after a later argument's conversion wrote to, detached, shrank or grew it; that only a string that is not ASCII is copied, and with shared: "copied" a shared buffer; that JsBytes::get before and after a callback that writes, detaches, frees, shrinks or grows the buffer gives what it holds each time; that another thread reads PinnedBytes after a callback transferred or shrank the buffer; the encoding of a string "asIs"; b.u64.asBigInt, each way a body can fail, and the mistakes in a schema that the generator refuses.
  • New tests in hash.test.js, password.test.ts, randomUUIDv5.test.ts, zstd.test.ts, toml.test.ts, yaml.test.ts and xml.test.ts. Each case of the two bug tables that is in the corpora has one that fails on main, but JSON5.parse of an S3 file. The two for a shared buffer that another thread writes fail on a debug build without the copy. JSON5.parse and XML.parse, which borrow, went through 3,000 rounds of each of 7 such writers.
  • The existing tests of everything that moved: hash, password, randomUUIDv5, zstd, csrf, namespace-prototype-pollution, and the 24 files for TOML, JSON5, JSONC, YAML, XML and markdown. xml.test.ts "deep values are a catchable error" times out on a debug build of main too.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds bindgen support for string-or-buffer arguments, callable namespaces, and BigInt results. It migrates compression, text-format, hash, password, and UUIDv5 APIs to generated bindings, with supporting conversion helpers, runtime wiring, documentation, and tests.

Changes

Bindgen Runtime Migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bindgen types, conversion, and test support
docs/project/bindgen.mdx, src/codegen/*, src/jsc/bindgen.rs, src/jsc/bindings/Bindgen/*, src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs, test/internal/bindgen.test.ts
Bindgen adds string-or-buffer conversion, callable namespaces, BigInt results, and deferred reads for heap-borrowing arguments. Heap helpers and conversion tests cover byte inputs, Blob handling, conversion order, and errors.
Typed compression bindings
src/runtime/api/BunObject.bind.ts, src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs, src/jsc/bindings/BunObject+exports.h, src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp, test/js/bun/util/zstd.test.ts
Synchronous zlib and Zstd operations use typed bindgen arguments, options, results, and errors. Generated bindings replace the previous callbacks. Tests cover accepted inputs, option coercion, and argument conversion order.
Text-format and hash bindings
src/runtime/api.rs, src/runtime/api/{JSON5Object,JSONCObject,TOMLObject,XMLObject,YAMLObject}.{bind.ts,rs}, src/runtime/api/HashObject.{bind.ts,rs}, src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp, src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs, test/js/bun/util/hash.test.js
Text-format entry points use bindgen arguments, while parsing and serialization implementations remain in place. Hash algorithms are exposed through a generated namespace and tested across input forms and seed values.
Password and UUIDv5 bindings
src/runtime/crypto/PasswordObject.{bind.ts,rs}, src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.{bind.ts,rs}, src/jsc/bindings/BunObject.cpp, test/js/bun/util/password.test.ts, test/js/bun/util/randomUUIDv5.test.ts
Password operations and UUIDv5 use generated bindings with typed inputs and error handling. Bun property wiring and tests cover undefined password arguments, UUID encoding values, and buffer detachment.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things in the new bindgen plumbing: the cppReadLast step in src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts emits the buffer pointer/length read after every argument's conversion and exception check, so a later-argument getter that detaches or resizes the buffer is observed; and create_uint8_array_from_vec in src/jsc/bindgen.rs pairs the leaked Vec with mi_free_ctx, which routes through bun_alloc::default_alloc (the same allocator as #[global_allocator], including under ASAN), with a null ctx for a zero-capacity Vec. Given the size of the port and the new unsafe fn JsHeap::global() contract, a human look at the SAFETY comments at its call sites is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a new b.stringOrBuffer bindgen argument type (C++ JSStringOrBufferView, IDL converters, a Blob__getInMemoryBytes extern), a cppReadLast hook in the generator, new JsHeap helpers including pub unsafe fn global(), and ports 33 Bun.* functions (zlib/zstd, hash, password, randomUUIDv5, TOML/JSON5/JSONC/YAML/XML parsers) onto generated bindings. It touches memory-safety-sensitive surface (borrowed buffer views across argument conversion, allocation ownership handed to JSC, crypto/password paths). Inline findings were posted, and the port is large, so approval is not appropriate; the note records what else was examined and found sound.

…toHasher`, the parsers and the client `WebSocket` (#45823)

Related to #16374

### Problem
- On main, `Bun.hash(output)` hashes the text `[object BuildArtifact]`
for every in-memory output of `Bun.build()`. The TOML, YAML, JSON5 and
XML parsers read it, and `Bun.sha`, `CryptoHasher` and `crypto.hash`
throw. 1.4.3 reads the bytes. No release has this (#45590, #45687).
- In 1.4.3 too, the client `ws.send(output)`, `ping` and `pong` send
that text. `ServerWebSocket` sends the bytes.
- Cause: `checkInMemoryBlob` (`Bindgen/JSBytesView.cpp:15`) and
`convertPayload` (`JSWebSocket.cpp:707`) test the `JSBlob` class, then
call `Blob__sharedView`. An output holds a Blob but is no `JSBlob`.

### Fix
- `Blob__sharedView` returns `NotABlob`, `InMemory` or `NotInMemory`.
Its `false` meant two things, so each caller kept a class test.
- Both callers drop the class test. Rust's `Blob::from_js` decides.
- An output written to `outdir` throws, as `Bun.file()` does.
- Verified: `test/js/web/websocket/websocket-blob.test.ts` and 7 more
files. 11 new tests fail on main, pass here. Self-reviewed: 17 concerns
raised, 16 addressed (Notes).

### Background
- A `BuildArtifact` is its own class with a `Blob` field. bun-types
declares `BuildArtifact extends Blob`.
- `checkInMemoryBlob` is the Blob test of `b.bytes`, a bindgen argument
type. 36 functions use it.
- Considered: add `JSBuildArtifact` to that class test. It alone stops
the regression, but copies the rule. A `JSBlob` subclass (#16374) needs
API decisions.

### Downsides
- `Bun.hash` now throws for an output written to `outdir`. 1.4.3 hashed
zero bytes.
- The client error names `blob.bytes()`, which an output lacks until
#45509.
- Instructions per call (release): `Bun.hash.adler32(blob)` 289 to 292,
`ws.ping(response)` 397 to 423. Binary: +256 bytes.

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

**Reach.** No user reported either symptom. A review comment on #45509
found the WebSocket half. I found the `b.bytes` half when I reproduced
it. The reason to fix it now is the regression, before a release has it.

**What each build does** (Linux x64, in-memory output unless marked):

| Call | 1.4.3 (canary `367d939d9`) | main `0973e696f9` | this branch |
|---|---|---|---|
| `Bun.hash(output)`, 12 more algorithms | hash of the bytes |
`10738821316971658n` for every output | hash of the bytes |
| `TOML`, `YAML`, `JSON5`, `XML.parse(asset)` | parsed | parses the text
`[object BuildArtifact]` | parsed |
| `Bun.sha`, `Bun.SHA1.hash`, `CryptoHasher`, `crypto.hash` | digest of
the bytes | `TypeError: input must be a string, ArrayBuffer,
ArrayBufferView or Blob` | digest of the bytes |
| client `ws.send(output)`, `ping`, `pong` | the text `[object
BuildArtifact]` | the same text | the bytes |
| `Bun.hash(outdirOutput)` | hash of zero bytes | hash of the text |
`TypeError: File blob cannot be used here` |
| parsers and hashers with an `outdir` output | an error | the text, or
the `TypeError` above | `TypeError: File blob cannot be used here` |
| client `ws.send(outdirOutput)` | the text | the text | `Error: send
cannot send a file- or S3-backed Blob synchronously; await blob.bytes()
first` |

**An output that `outdir` wrote.** It is a file-backed Blob, so every
entry point here refuses it, as it refuses `Bun.file()` (#45590,
#45223). These throws are new against a release:
- `Bun.hash` and its 12 algorithms. 1.4.3 returned the hash of zero
bytes for every such output.
- The client `send`, `ping` and `pong`, in every `readyState`. Before,
an open socket sent the text, a connecting socket threw
`InvalidStateError`, and a closed socket only added 22 to
`bufferedAmount`.
- `ws.ping(output)` and `ws.pong(output)` with an in-memory output over
125 bytes throw the `RangeError` of a control frame. Before, they sent
the 22 bytes of the text.

The client error says `await blob.bytes() first`. The text is the one
`ServerWebSocket` uses. An output has no `bytes()` on main. #45509 adds
it. `await output.arrayBuffer()` works today.

**Tests.** `USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1` cannot be the "before" for the `b.bytes`
half, because no release has the regression. The "before" is a debug
build of main with these test files.

| New test | 1.4.3 canary | main | this branch |
|---|---|---|---|
| `websocket-blob.test.ts`, 4 tests in "WebSocket client with a
Bun.build() output" | 4 fail | 4 fail | pass |
| `hash.test.js` | fails at the `outdir` assertion | fails at the bytes
assertion | pass |
| `bun-cryptohasher.test.ts` | fails at the `outdir` assertion (other
message) | fails with the `TypeError` | pass |
| `toml.test.ts`, `yaml.test.ts`, `json5.test.ts`, `xml.test.ts`, one
each | pass | fail | pass |
| `bindgen.test.ts` "takes an output of Bun.build()" (assertion builds
only) | skipped | fail | pass |
| controls: `websocket-blob.test.ts` "a value that holds no Blob",
`bindgen.test.ts` "does not take a value that holds no Blob" | pass |
pass | pass |

The two controls pin the arm that this change rewired: a plain object, a
`Response` and a `URL` are still converted to a string.

A note for a local run of `xml.test.ts`: one older test there times out
on a debug build with the default limit of 5 s, also on main.
`XML.stringify > deep values are a catchable error` takes 10 s. CI
passes `--timeout=90000`, and with that flag the file passes on my debug
build (60 pass).

Also run on the debug build: `websocket-client.test.ts` (104 pass),
`ws-client-compat-send.test.ts` (82 pass), `ws.test.ts` (107 pass),
`websocket-server.test.ts` (218 pass), the source lints
`host-export-callers`, `dead-code-escapes`, `empty-jsvalue-laundering`
and `vm-thread-door`, and `BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1` on
`websocket-blob`, `bun-cryptohasher`, `bindgen` and `hash`.
`require("ws")` keeps its own `TypeError` for an output: its `isBlob`
test runs first.

**Self-review, not addressed.** A lint that lists every C++ `JSBlob`
class test, so that a new one in front of a Blob API fails CI. It is a
new lint with an inventory to keep, so it needs a maintainer's yes
first.

**Cost.** I measured release builds of main `ff8ad61ad5` with and
without this change. That was the base before the last rebase. The diff
under `src/` is the same since then, but for one deleted include. `perf`
and `valgrind` are not in the container. Instruction counts are `gdb`
`stepi` counts over one call of the host function, so they repeat
exactly.
- `ws.ping(x)` on a closed socket, which converts the argument and
returns: string 259 to 246, `Uint8Array` 180 to 178, `ArrayBuffer` 176
to 174, number 263 to 261, Blob 232 to 222, `{ toString }` 1093 to 1070,
`Response` 397 to 423.
- `Bun.hash.adler32(x)`: string 228 to 228, `Uint8Array` 245 to 245,
number 308 to 308, Blob 289 to 292, `{ toString }` 1037 to 1015,
`Response` 488 to 494. The generated host function is the same 116
instructions.
- `convertPayload`: 4 to 3 pushes, 13 to 6 call instructions, 1021 to
722 bytes. The Blob arm is a new cold function of 640 bytes.
- Allocator calls in one call (debug builds): string 1 to 1,
`Uint8Array` 0 to 0, Blob 0 to 0, output 1 to 0.
- Binary text: +256 bytes (`llvm-size`). Exported `Blob__` symbols: 9 to
9. Host functions added: 0.
- What pays: a DOM wrapper that is not a Blob (`Response`, `Request`,
`URL`, `Headers`, `FormData`) and is sent or hashed as a string. It now
asks Rust once.

**Sequencing.** cc @dylan-conway for the `b.bytes` half. #45687 merged
during this work and put 19 more functions behind `checkInMemoryBlob`.
The `crypto.hash` of `node:crypto` forwards to `CryptoHasher.hash`, so
it broke with them. This branch is rebased on #45687, and
`bun-cryptohasher.test.ts` covers these functions and `crypto.hash`.
#45720 merged too, and this branch is rebased on it. #45509 adds
`Blob::canCreate` for `FormData`. A trial merge of this branch with it
is clean, so either order works.

**The cell-type rule.** `mayHoldBlob` tests one byte: the cell type.
`Blob::from_js` asserts that each value it resolves has that cell type.
The assertion is a `debug_assert!`. It is active in debug builds and on
the ASAN lane of CI, where `cfg.assertions` is on. So a later class that
holds a Blob under another cell type panics there the first time that
any code resolves it. `BlobOrStringOrBuffer` tests the same cell type
before it asks for a Blob (`src/runtime/node/types.rs:167`), in release
builds too.

**Relation to #16374.** This is the consumer-side fix. If
`JSBuildArtifact` becomes a `JSBlob` subclass, `mayHoldBlob`, the
`NotABlob` arm and the cold helper can go, and these tests stay as its
acceptance tests. The subclass needs a heap Blob as the payload and
three API decisions: `instanceof Blob`, the other `Blob.prototype`
members on an output, and `structuredClone`.

Sites that still test the `JSBlob` class after this PR, and what an
output gets there:
- `FormData.append` and `set` (`JSDOMFormData.cpp`): the text, with no
error. #45509 is open for it.
- `new Bun.SQL({ tls: output })` (`src/js/internal/sql/options.ts:815`):
`$inheritsBlob` is false, so the code reads the output as an options
object without `ca`. No error. Read from the code, not run.
- With an error, run here: `structuredClone(output)` (`DataCloneError`),
`Duplex.from(output)` (`duplexify.ts:128`), `tls.createSecureContext({
ca: output })` (`tls.ts:23`), `require("ws")` (`ws.ts:427`).
- Read from the code, not run: `b.blob` (`Bindgen/IDLConvertBlob.h:20`),
`expect().toHaveLength` (`bindings.cpp:2981`), `ffi.ts:186`,
`quic.ts:179`.

**Not changed.** Rust code that calls `Blob::shared_view()` directly
still reads a file-backed output as zero bytes, as it reads
`Bun.file()`. Examples: `Bun.Archive` (#28459), a `Blob` of several
parts (#25851), `RedisClient` arguments (#36836), `formData()` (#45161).
Those have their own issues and pull requests.

**Deleted with the class tests.** `#include "ZigGeneratedClasses.h"` in
`JSBytesView.cpp` and in `JSWebSocket.cpp`. Neither file names a
generated class now.
