macros: read a returned Bun.file() on the transpiling thread and inline its bytes - #46688
A macro that returns Bun.file(path), new Response(Bun.file(path)) or fetch("file://...") is inlined as if the file were empty: "", {} or "data:<type>;base64,". So is a missing file. The build exits 0.
The Blob arm of Run::coerce (src/js_parser_jsc/Macro.rs:745) takes Blob::shared_view(), which is empty for a file or S3 store.
Fix
The arm asks Blob::in_memory_view() and reads a file store on the calling thread, through a new RuntimeHooks slot. BlobExt::read_bytes_sync reads a regular file with NodeFS::read_file_with_options.
An unreadable file fails the build at the macro call. An S3 file fails with a note.
Verified: test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts (14 new tests, 13 fail on main). Self-reviewed: 19 concerns raised, 17 addressed.
Background
A Blob has one store: memory, a file, or S3. in_memory_view() is None for the last two.
Run::coerce turns a macro's return value into AST nodes, in a crate below bun_runtime. Considered the Blob's async read plus the promise wait: 4 modules on a 2-thread pool hang.
Downsides
A build that exited 0 with a missing file fails. A pipe or a device fails with ENODEV.
The read blocks the transpiling thread: 5 syscalls, 6 allocator calls and a 256 KB buffer per file. Other callers pay 8 instructions per in-memory Blob. The stack adds 5,120 bytes of text.
return readFileSync(path, "utf8") in the macro gives the same value on released Bun. The read adds the natural spelling, not a capability.
For a read:
In macro serialization broken for when returning escaped string #3957 the advice for a macro that wants a file was "If you wrap it in a Response, does it work? new Response(f)". The reporter answered that Bun.file() and Response(Bun.file()) both gave an empty string. Nobody followed up.
docs/bundler/macros.mdx says a Blob is serialized by its type, and Bun.file() is a Blob with a type.
Those two consumers are runtime calls on the JS thread. This arm runs on the thread that transpiles the caller, which the macro call already blocks. A blocking read does not run the event loop (the rule Stop running the event loop inside JavaScript calls #46545 states for other APIs).
The async alternative (await file.text() in the macro) needs a work-pool thread, and the macro often runs on one. See "Pool pressure" below.
If the answer is throw, I will replace the read with the first row and keep the tests for the error.
What the arm does now
the macro returns
result
Bun.file(path), with or without { type }, from a path, a file: URL or a descriptor of a regular file
inlined by type: JSON object, text, or base64 data URL
.slice(a, b) of it
that window. A window that starts at or after the end is empty
a file that reports no size (procfs), whole or as a slice
its content, or that window of it
Bun.file(fd)
read as text() reads it. A window that starts at 0 starts at the position of the descriptor, so the same Blob returned twice is its content and then ""
new Response(file), new Request(url, { body: file }), fetch("file://..."), new Response(file.stream()), new Blob([file])
as the file
an empty file
"", {} or "data:<type>;base64,", as on main

a directory
the same error with EISDIR
a FIFO, a device, a socket, Bun.stdin on a pipe
the same error with ENODEV. The open is non-blocking, so a FIFO with no writer does not hang
an S3 file
error: cannot inline S3 file "<key>" returned by this macro and note: read the file in the macro and return the result, for example "await file.text()" or "await file.json()". No request is sent
a JSON file that does not parse
the parser's error, located in the file (<path>:2:8), not in fetch.json
a JSON file with a UTF-16LE byte-order mark
parsed, as Bun.file().json() does
The reader follows Bun.Image (src/runtime/image/Image.rs:1534): open, fstat, and ENODEV unless the path is a regular file, because a device never ends and a FIFO can block. The bytes come from the reader that fs.readFileSync uses. It asks for 256 KB in its first read, which is what makes a procfs or sysctl file (size 0, content in one read) come out whole. With a max_size that reader stops at the size fstat reports (src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7359). So for a slice of a file that reports no size, the macro read calls the reader again until the window is full or the file ends. The reader itself is not changed.
Still wrong after this PR (each has its own owner or is named here on purpose)
new Response(s3File) is a 302 redirect with no body (src/runtime/webcore/Response.rs:1019), so a macro that returns it is inlined as "data:;base64,".
A Blob whose size was resolved to 0 is an empty window, for this read as for text() and bytes() on main. That happens when exists() or .size ran before the file existed (Bun.file: a failed stat leaves the size unknown #39763 leaves that size unknown), or on a procfs file. The read cannot tell that 0 from .slice(0, 0).
fetch and FormData pass a max_size to the same reader. For a file that reports no size they send 262,160 bytes of a longer body or slice, on main too (fetch(url, { body: Bun.file("/proc/kallsyms") }) sends 262,160 of 1,861,604 bytes). This PR leaves them as they are: they also pass a device to the reader and rely on that read to end (/dev/zero as a body is 262,160 bytes today). fetch: stream a Bun.file() body that is a FIFO, socket, or device instead of reading it on the JS thread #41488 covers the body that is not a slice.
A slice of a numeric sysctl file that starts past byte 0 is empty, for this read as for text(). The kernel gives that file to a read at byte 0 only.
Pool pressure (release builds, linux x64, 12 cores). N modules each call a macro and are statically imported by one entry. Run with bun entry.ts and with Bun.build(), N = 4 with UV_THREADPOOL_SIZE=2 and N = 12, 48, 96, 200 with the default pool.
macro returns Bun.file(p), on this branch: 0 of 100 runs hung (10 runs for each of the 10 cases, timeout 30 s).
macro is async () => await Bun.file(p).text(), on the release build of main: 31 of 50 runs hung (5 runs each, timeout 15 s), and 10 of 10 with the 2-thread pool. It is reported separately.
Measurements (release, main 6292c65 against this branch, linux x64, bun build of one entry file)
in-memory Blob returned by a macro: 42 to 50 instructions between the Blob downcast and expr_from_blob (21 to 29 for an empty Blob), 0 added allocations or syscalls (gdb stepi).
per returned Bun.file() (16-byte text), on the transpiling thread: 1 openat, 1 fstat, 2 read, 1 close, 0 futex or eventfd write. 0 file syscalls for a BunFile that is constructed and not returned (gdb syscall catch inside the coercion over 101 call sites, and a ptrace count of 101 call sites against 1).
per returned Bun.file() (16-byte text): 6 allocator calls, 262,266 bytes requested (the 256 KB scratch buffer of the reader), 56 bytes still allocated when the coercion returns. 0 JSPromise, 0 Blob wrappers, 0 work-pool jobs (gdb breakpoints on the mimalloc entry points).
bytes still allocated after one 1 MiB file: text 1,048,768, binary 1,398,333 (the data URL), JSON 1,048,896, non-ASCII text 1,973,982 (UTF-16). They stay in the macro arena as long as the transpiler lives, as every macro result does on main: there a 16 MiB text body adds 16 MB of RSS per bun --hot reload of the entry file.
Self-review
Hand-written read loop: replaced with NodeFS::read_file_with_options behind open and fstat.
The loop cut a sysctl file at 16 bytes: gone with 1. The Linux test reads /proc/sys/kernel/random/boot_id.
A window past the end was an lseek error on ext4: it is an empty window now, and two test rows cover it.
The reasons against a throw: the table above.
Non-ASCII JSON strings: not addressed, see "Still wrong".
UTF-16LE JSON: decoded.
A JSON error named fetch.json: it names the file.
The S3 error: one error line and one note line, the key quoted, no claim about downloads. I ran both recipes of the note against a local endpoint in a macro, and both inline the object.
The open had no O_NOCTTY: added, with a Linux test. A session leader with no controlling terminal got tty_nr 34816 after a macro returned a pty path, and keeps 0 with the flag.
A slice over 256 KB of a file that reports no size was cut at 262,161 bytes: fixed. The Linux test gives its fixture 400 KB of environment and compares a 300,000-byte window of /proc/self/environ with readFileSync in the same process.
The directory test row did not name the error: it expects EISDIR now.
First try: read a file with no size whole, then cut the window. My review of it found that the second window of one descriptor was empty, that an 8-byte window of /proc/kallsyms read all 1.8 MB, and that a window of /proc/self/pagemap failed.
Second try: a flag on the shared reader, so that it reads on to max_size. It was correct, but fs.readFileSync ran 6 more instructions per call in read_file_with_options (1,101 to 1,107 for a 17-byte file, gdb stepi), because the function was laid out again.
In the PR: the loop is in the macro read, and only a slice of a file that reports no size enters it. I checked 254 windows over /proc/<pid>/environ files of 17 exact lengths around 262,144, 262,161 and 524,322 bytes against readFileSync: 0 differences (76 on the commit before).
Review round 2 (two inline findings)
Two windows of one descriptor out of order, or the same descriptor-backed Blob twice: not changed. The read follows the position of the descriptor exactly as text() does on main ([f.slice(6, 13), f.slice(0, 5)] is ["version", " 6.1."] for both, [f, f] is [content, ""] for both), and fs.readFileSync(fd) has the same rule. A seek to 0 would give a macro that reads a header and returns the descriptor the whole file, where text() gives the rest.
The window test read /proc/kallsyms: it reads /proc/self/environ of its own fixture now, so the test decides the content and the length.
Self-review counts. 9 concerns before the first push, 10 on the follow-up. Not addressed: non-ASCII JSON strings (#42019) and a test row for /proc/self/pagemap (it needs a lane to read its own pagemap).
The work pool test and LeakSanitizer. The child of that test runs with detect_leaks=0. Under bun run, LeakSanitizer reports each Bun.file() that a macro makes in a module transpiled on the work pool (4 Blobs and 4 stores, 2,208 bytes in this test). The report is the same when the macro returns a string and not the file, so the read is not its cause. bun build sweeps the macro VM of each worker (collect_macro_vm_garbage), and the runtime transpiler's pool threads have no such step. The other 13 tests run with leak detection on.
Suites run on the ASAN debug build: test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts (50 pass, and 50 pass with the environment of the ASAN CI lane: BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1, LeakSanitizer on, exception checks on), test/regression/issue/03830.test.ts, test/regression/issue/39900.test.ts, test/bundler/transpiler/scope-mismatch-panic.test.ts, and for the move of in_memory_view: test/js/bun/websocket/websocket-server.test.ts (218 pass), test/js/bun/toml/toml.test.ts. Callers of the same reader: test/js/bun/http/fetch-file-upload.test.ts (11 pass), test/js/web/html/FormData.test.ts (151 pass). cargo clippy on the three crates is clean. bun run rust:check-all passes for all 12 CI targets.
The JSON parser leaves every escape-free string and key as a borrow of
its source. For a JSON Blob or Response returned from a macro, the
source was the Blob's store, and the store is freed when the Blob is
collected. The object that the macro call was inlined as could then
point at freed memory: a heap-use-after-free under ASAN, and the bytes
of a later allocation in the output of a release build.
The text arm of expr_from_blob stored the body as a JSON-escaped string,
and the printer escapes an 8-bit string again. Since v1.1.35 a body with
a newline, a quote, a backslash or a non-ASCII character was inlined as
its escaped form: "a\nb" became "a\\nb".
Store the string that blob.text() returns for the bytes. A UTF-8
byte-order mark is dropped, a UTF-16LE one selects that encoding, and
non-ASCII text is stored as UTF-16, like a literal from the lexer.
A macro that returned a file-backed Blob (Bun.file(), a slice of it, a
Response or Request over it, fetch() of a file: URL) was inlined as if
the file were empty. The Blob arm of Run::coerce took
Blob::shared_view(), which is empty for a store that is not in memory.
A missing file gave the same empty value, and the build exited 0.
The arm now asks Blob::in_memory_view(), which moves to bun_jsc. For a
file store it reads the file on the calling thread, through the new
RuntimeHooks slot blob_read_bytes_sync. BlobExt::read_bytes_sync opens
the path, accepts only a regular file, and reads the window with
NodeFS::read_file_with_options. A file that cannot be read fails the
build at the macro call. An S3 file fails the build with a note that
says to read it in the macro.
A JSON file that does not parse is reported under its own path, and a
UTF-16LE byte-order mark in JSON is decoded as Blob#json() does.
Status: needs a maintainer's answer to the question at the top of the description (read or throw). The code is ready for review in the read shape. It is stacked on #46677 and #46680.
How to reproduce. Use a build without this change.
With this change, without the missing() call: ["BANNER\n","BANNER\n"].
With this change, with the missing() call: error: failed to read the file returned by this macro: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '<dir>/no-such-file.txt' at the macro call, and exit 1.
Macro-returned Blobs can now be read synchronously during conversion, including file-backed Blobs. Macro conversion handles text and JSON content, with updated diagnostics for unsupported or unreadable files. Tests cover conversion, build and run behavior, and file-read edge cases.
Tests cover text and JSON conversion, file-backed values during run and build, read failures, unused values, and files whose reported size is zero.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the lifetime of the JSON path in expr_from_blob (src/js_parser_jsc/Macro.rs): both the body bytes and the source name from store_path() are copied into bump before parse_for_macro runs, so parsed strings and parser diagnostics do not borrow the read Vec or the Blob store, and the Bun.file(fd) case was examined and not treated as a defect of this change.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a synchronous file read for file-backed Blobs returned by bundler macros, touching the macro coercion in Macro.rs, a new RuntimeHooks slot, a new BlobExt::read_bytes_sync with open/fstat/non-regular rejection in Blob.rs, docs, and tests. No auth or crypto surface, but it reads arbitrary paths on the transpiling thread and parses file contents. Five confirmed findings were posted inline, so a human should look.
…o size
A procfs file reports a size of 0. With a `max_size`, the file reader
stops at the size that `fstat` reports, so a slice of such a file that
is longer than 256 KB was cut at 262,161 bytes. The macro read now asks
the reader again until the window is full or the file ends. It does
that only for a file that reports no size, so other reads make the
same calls as before. The reader itself is not changed: `fetch` and
`FormData` also pass a device to it and rely on the read to end.
The open of the path adds O_NOCTTY, as the open of fs.readFileSync
does. Without it, a session leader with no controlling terminal took a
terminal that a macro returned as its controlling terminal.
Tests: a window over 256 KB of /proc/kallsyms, two windows of one
descriptor and a window past the end; the controlling terminal; the
directory case expects EISDIR. The child of the work pool test runs
without leak detection: nothing collects the macro VM of a pool thread
before exit, so LeakSanitizer reports each Bun.file() that a macro
made there, with or without this read.
…f/environ
The test read /proc/kallsyms, which a kernel or a sandbox can leave
out, and compared it with a second read in another process. It now
gives its fixture 400 KB of environment and compares a 300,000-byte
window of /proc/self/environ with readFileSync in the same process,
so the test decides the content and the length.

Decide whether fd-backed Blobs should read from the start of their window.
For a PathOrFileDescriptor::Fd store at offset == 0, the read does not set the file position. It starts at the descriptor's current position and advances it. The offset > 0 guard skips the seek only in this case.
When one descriptor backs two macro calls, the second read can start at EOF and return empty bytes. The build still succeeds, so the inlined value can be silently empty. A path-backed Blob opens a new descriptor for each read, so it is not affected.
If fd-backed reads should always start at the window offset, seek for every fd-backed Blob, not only when offset > 0. The seek must not make non-seekable descriptors such as pipes and FIFOs return empty bytes. Confirm how bun_sys::set_file_offset reports ESPIPE before changing the guard.

This PR leaves them as they are: they also pass a device to the reader and rely on that read to end (/dev/zeroas a body is 262,160 bytes today). fetch: stream a Bun.file() body that is a FIFO, socket, or device instead of reading it on the JS thread #41488 covers the body that is not a slice.text(). The kernel gives that file to a read at byte 0 only.value.k[0]reads a byte of it. Main does this for every JSONResponse. text()does on main ([f.slice(6, 13), f.slice(0, 5)]is["version", " 6.1."]for both,[f, f]is[content, ""]for both), andfs.readFileSync(fd)has the same rule.
