What does this PR do?

Moves six classes from .classes.ts to b.class schemas of the bindgen (docs/project/bindgen.mdx): Crypto, TextDecoder, Bun.FileSystemRouter, MatchedRoute, ResourceUsage and S3Stat.

Each method was a host function that took a CallFrame and checked its arguments by hand, and each getter made a JSValue by hand. The schema now says what each member takes and gives, and the struct implements a generated trait with typed parameters.

export const TextDecoder = b.class({
  rustPath: "crate::webcore::TextDecoder",
  configurable: false,
  construct: {
    args: { label: b.string.loose.utf8.optional, options: TextDecoderOptions.nullable.default({}) },
    expected: { options: ["object"] },
    capability: "heap",
    throws: true,
  },
  proto: {
    decode: { ... },
    encoding: { getter: b.string.local, cache: true, capability: "heap" },
    fatal: { getter: b.bool },
    ignoreBOM: { getter: b.bool },
  },
});
impl TextDecoderClass for TextDecoder {
    ...
    fn fatal(&self) -> bool {
        self.fatal
    }
    ...
}

The payload of a b.class is stored inside the JS object, so it is moved there when the object is made. MatchedRoute pointed into itself. It now owns the decoded path and says where the query string starts in it, and its params are a plain Vec, taken from the caller's and not cloned. The router's Match loses the raw pointer to the params and the function that erased its lifetime.

FileSystemRouter loses an arena that held nothing after the constructor returned. Its constructor and reload() share one function that reads the directory and loads the routes. A Load says which of the two it is: Cached reads the resolver's cache and refuses warnings, FromDisk reads the disk and lets them pass, as each did. The three strings a router and its matches share are a RefCountedString, which takes a ref when it is cloned and gives it back when it is dropped, so neither struct has a Drop of its own.

A method that says mutates: true gets &mut self, so the five Cells and the RefCell of TextDecoder are plain fields. To throw can run the JavaScript of a debugger that pauses on exceptions, and that JavaScript can call decode() on the same decoder. So the decoder makes its three errors (data that is not valid, a string too long, an allocation that failed) and returns them, not thrown. The generated code, and TextDecoderStream, throw it once the &mut has ended. digest of CryptoHasher and of the static hashers, the other mutates: true method that makes a result, is as on main: it can throw inside its borrow when the buffer or string for a digest of at most 64 bytes cannot be allocated. Its fix is capability: "js" and with_mut, which changes its receiver and arguments, so it is not in this PR.

crypto.timingSafeEqual and timingSafeEqual of node:crypto were two host functions over one body. They are one signature in the schema.

cpuTime adds its microseconds in Rust and makes three BigInts. The two C++ helpers that multiplied and added BigInts for it had no other caller and are removed.

decode() copied the bytes of a resizable ArrayBuffer before it read them. No JavaScript runs while it reads, so it borrows them. The bytes of a SharedArrayBuffer are still copied.

Each getter that was cache: true still is, and src still returns the field of scriptSrc. FileSystemRouter.style and MatchedRoute.kind are enumerations, whose strings are made once per VM, so the first read allocates nothing either. The new assetPrefix is cached as origin is.

The generator

A string in expected: the whole message of the ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. Node's JavaScript throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE(name, expected, actual), which is what a list gives. Its C++ throws a literal message with no Received, and does not look at the value:

const anyBuffer = (name: string) =>
  `The "${name}" argument must be an instance of ArrayBuffer, Buffer, TypedArray, or DataView.`;
const equal = {
  args: { buf1: buffer, buf2: buffer },
  expected: { buf1: anyBuffer("buf1"), buf2: anyBuffer("buf2") },
  ...

expected for a dictionary: what is not an object is reported as the argument, The "options" argument must be of type object. Received type number (1), where the dictionary's own name was used.

A cached getter is an internal field with a property. A wrapper had two kinds of slot: internalFields, which Rust reads and writes, and one per cache: true getter, which only the generated getter touched. They are one kind. cache: true declares a field of the getter's name, and Rust gets the same x_field(heap) and set_x_field(heap, value) for it. Every field starts as undefined, and the getter calls Rust while its field is undefined. reload() sets routes to undefined, as it emptied the slot before. cache: "scriptSrc" declares nothing and returns the field of another getter, as in .classes.ts.

A heap snapshot names the internal fields, as it named the cached values of a .classes.ts class: routes of a router is a property edge called routes.

Four more types for a result, so that a body returns plain Rust where it made a JS value by hand:

Schema The body returns JavaScript gets Used by
b.f64.asDate f64 a Date S3Stat#lastModified
b.string.local JsLocal<'a, JSString>, from heap.create_latin1_string(..), heap.create_utf16_string_from_vec(..), heap.create_utf8_string(..) or heap.common_string(..) that string TextDecoder#decode, TextDecoder#encoding, Bun.which
b.record(T) anything that is IntoIterator of (key, T) an object with an own property for each pair. T holds no JS value, as the element of a b.array FileSystemRouter#routes
a b.union the generated enum what the alternative is Bun.randomUUIDv5: a string or a Buffer
fn routes(&self) -> impl IntoIterator<Item = (impl AsRef<[u8]>, impl AsRef<[u8]>)> {
    let names = self.router.get_names();
    names.iter().zip(self.router.get_entry_points())
}

decode is not a b.string: a bun_core::String would be made by one call to C++ and turned into a JS string by a second. JSValue::from_entries had routes as its only caller and is removed. Bun.which returned its string under b.string.utf8, through a trait that had no other use and is removed. These three and b.u64.asBigInt share a base, which tells a schema that takes one as an argument, behind a setter or in a fromJS dictionary that it is a result.

Three results of these schemas are still b.any. crypto.getRandomValues returns the array it was given. The value of a key of MatchedRoute#params and #query is a string, or an array when the key comes more than once, and QueryStringMap lends the values from a buffer of the caller: a returned union owns its strings, so each value would be copied. Their bodies call what b.record and b.array generate calls to, with each value made as its pair is asked for:

let entries = core::iter::from_fn(|| {
    let entry = names.next(&mut buffer)?;
    let value = match &*entry.values {
        [value] => to_js::utf8(heap, value),
        values => to_js::array(heap, values, to_js::utf8),
    };
    Some((entry.name, value))
});
// Never cuts: it tells `record` how many names there can be.
let entries = entries.take(map.get_name_count());
to_js::record(heap, entries, |_, value| value)

The object has the inline room it has on main. JSObject::create_with_initializer, ObjectInitializer, JSObject::put_record and their C++ had these two getters as their only caller and are removed.

nullPrototype: true on a dictionary: as a result, the object has no prototype. The four records of ResourceUsage are such objects, so its getters return plain structs:

export const ResourceUsageOps = b.dictionary({ in: b.f64, out: b.f64 }, { nullPrototype: true });
fn ops(&self) -> ResourceUsageOps {
    ResourceUsageOps { r#in: self.rusage.inblock(), out: self.rusage.oublock() }
}

payload.into_js_value(global): makes the object from code that has the global object and no capability.

heap.illegal_constructor(), heap.string_too_long(), heap.memory_allocation_failed(): what throw_illegal_constructor, throw_string_too_long and throw_memory_allocation_failed throw, for the body to return. Each pair makes its error in one create_*_error of the global object.

A getter that is .nullable is T | null in the generated types, as a result already was.

shared: "copied": a borrowed view finds out what kind of buffer it has once, where it asked once to read it and once more to see if it is shared.

A generated function does less before it calls Rust. Each rule is keyed on the type, so it holds for every schema:

  • What an error message needs is static data when it is made of literals. A call stored it on the stack, for each argument and each member of a dictionary. The one that holds the argument's value, for expected: [...], is made where a conversion takes it, so an absent argument makes none.
  • A b.bytes that takes no string is held without the UTF-8 view of a string, which was set up and torn down on each call. It is not passed to the code that throws for a wrong type either, so it can live in registers.
  • The check for an exception follows what can throw. An absent optional argument, a default and a buffer run none.

A class is set up by its own generated function, which calls what it needs by name. There was one callback for every class: it found the class from the address of its slot, then called through a table of function pointers (ClassDefinition), which is gone. split in node_util_binding.rs takes its clone as a generic too.

Performance

Measured on CI's release binaries (bun-linux-x64): the merge base ed58ba212 (build 128126) against 66e313f33 (build 128994). Each operation runs N and 4N times in fresh processes under perf stat, pinned to one core. The difference divided by 3N is the cost per call in user mode, garbage collection included, without startup. N makes a run about 6e8 instructions. Median of 9 interleaved rounds. The control is the merge base against a copy of itself: within 1.0% on instructions, and within 3.5% on cycles but for decode of shared memory (8.8%) and Glob.match (6.0%). The binary is 106,895,240 bytes, as that of the merge base is.

Bun.hash, CryptoHasher, Glob and semver are not converted here. They are measured because they run the C++ that the generated code shares.

The 7 getters that return a stored value (decoder.encoding, decoder.fatal, route.kind and route.src read again, router.style, router.origin, router.routes) take 24 to 40 instructions and 5 to 7 cycles on all three binaries.

Two rows take over 3.5% more cycles than main:

  • decode of UTF-16LE takes 248 cycles and not 233, and runs 57 fewer instructions. The cause was not found. Two builds of this branch that run the same instructions per call (1,330 and 1,335) took 219 and 250 cycles in one run, where main took 238. Front-end stalls, cache misses, branch misses and store-to-load conflicts were level between them.
  • crypto.getRandomValues takes 62 and not 60, for the instructions below.

Three rows run over 3% more instructions than main:

  • decode of shared memory. Both copy the bytes. main copied them inline in decode. The generated function calls copyBytes, which is out of line so that a buffer that is not shared, every other row of decode, does not carry it. To assign the copy to its MallocSpan frees the null pointers of two temporaries.
  • decode(). Each of the two arguments is kept alive for the call, and the holder of a copy is set up and freed.
  • crypto.getRandomValues. The body returns a bindgen::Result through memory, as that of every throws: true function does. On main the body was inlined in its host function.

Every decode frees the null pointer of a MallocSpan that holds no copy, which main did not: 14 to 20 instructions, by the difference between the builds of the two commits on either side of that change. It is in the rows above. TOML.parse and YAML.parse do the same on main.

Allocations. Calls that allocate or reallocate, per call of the operation. Counted on CI's symbolized builds (bun-linux-x64-profile) of the same two commits, with gdb breakpoints on the entry points of mimalloc, which WTF::fastMalloc calls too. The JIT is off, and a count is the difference between N and 4N calls divided by 3N. Cells of the JS heap are not counted. Of 54 operations, the 48 above and the six of this table that are not above, none allocates more, 34 allocate the same and 20 fewer:

Operation main Now
new TextDecoder() 1 0
new TextDecoder("utf-16le", { fatal: true }) 3 0
decode, 64 ASCII bytes of a resizable ArrayBuffer 2 1
router.match, an exact route 1 0
router.match, a dynamic route 3 1
router.match(request), a dynamic route 4 2
new FileSystemRouter({ dir, style }) 45 37
the same with assetPrefix and origin 47 37
the same with 2 fileExtensions 38 29
the same with 6 fileExtensions 53 41
router.reload() 72 67
router.reload().routes 81 75

A row above that reads a getter after match is fewer by the 2 of match, and the two that read encoding after new TextDecoder by the 1 of its Box. The counts are rounded. What is left over is the blocks of the JS heap, which fill sooner as the cell holds the struct: 0.018 of a block per MatchedRoute, and 0.006 on main. S3Stat and ResourceUsage were read and not counted: each loses its Box, and the strings of an S3Stat are cloned by their reference counts.

Published types

The test that checks bun-types against the schemas now covers five of the six classes. ResourceUsage has no name that JavaScript can reach, so its types were read by hand. What was found is in the tables below, as the rows that start with "type of".

The options of the constructor are published as FileSystemRouterOptions, the name its errors use.

Behaviour

Compared with CI's release build of main at ed58ba2, the merge base, and, for TextDecoder, crypto and timingSafeEqual, with Node v26.7.0:

  • 906 observations of the shape of the six classes: property order, descriptors, length and name, each member on 12 wrong receivers, new and calls without new, subclassing, Reflect.construct, Bun.inspect, structuredClone, heap names, and where Crypto and TextDecoder are among the keys of globalThis.
  • 3146 calls, most with each of 95 hostile values in each position.
  • 11400 sequences of decode() calls on random bytes, over 19 encodings with and without fatal, ignoreBOM and stream. What each returned or threw is the same.

The shape differs only by the new assetPrefix and by the three lengths below.

A call that returned on main returns the same, but for the rows of bug → non-bug, a fileExtensions array whose iteration was customised or that changes while it is read, options with a getter or a toString() that changes the directory or the working directory, and what the heap tools show. All are listed below.

Arguments are converted from left to right and before the body runs, which is the order of WebIDL. main and Node look up the label before they read the members of the options, and read the options of decode() before they look at the input. Each of these threw and still throws.

Call main Now
new TextDecoder("nope", options) throws the RangeError reads fatal and ignoreBOM, then throws it
new TextDecoder("nope", options), where to read a member throws e the RangeError e
decoder.decode(1, 1) The "options" argument must be of type object… TextDecoder.decode expects an ArrayBuffer or TypedArray
decoder.decode(1, { get stream() { … } }) runs the getter, then throws, or throws what it threw throws TextDecoder.decode expects an ArrayBuffer or TypedArray

No memory for the copy of a shared buffer is an error of the call, as it is for Bun.YAML.parse and Bun.TOML.parse on main. Seen with the address space limited by prlimit; it has no test.

Call main Now
decoder.decode(view), view on 1 GB of shared memory, and no memory for the copy the process aborts RangeError: Out of memory

The options of FileSystemRouter are a dictionary, so its errors are worded as those of every other dictionary. These seven are a TypeError with the code ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE before and after. Each row but the first has style: "nextjs" too, and each of the last four a dir that exists.

Call main Now
new FileSystemRouter({}), or [] Expected 'style' option (ex: "style": "nextjs") FileSystemRouterOptions.dir is required
{ style } Expected dir to be a string FileSystemRouterOptions.dir is required

Every member is read and checked before the style is judged and the directory is read.

Call main Now

fileExtensions is a b.array, which takes an Array and reads it as WebIDL reads a sequence, by its iterator. main read as many indices as the length it saw first.

fileExtensions main Now
[".js"] whose iteration yields ".mdx": a Symbol.iterator of its own or of its class, or Array.prototype[Symbol.iterator] or the next of %ArrayIteratorPrototype% replaced .js what is yielded: .mdx, the default extensions if nothing is, and the error of an element that is not a string, after the iterator's return() is called

a getter or a toString() of element 0 that changes the array's length reads up to the first length: ignores what was pushed, and refuses the undefined where elements were removed reads up to the length of the moment

The heap tools show every class of the bindgen alike.

the edge of a heap snapshot from a CryptoHasher to the string of algorithm an internal edge without a name a property edge, algorithm

The published types say more than they did, and what they said was true.

Type main Now

How did you verify your code works?

  • The comparisons above.
  • New tests, each of which fails on main: assetPrefix, the two String objects and the name that is an index in filesystem_router.test.ts, the lone surrogate, new TextDecoder("nope", 1) and the length of decode in text-decoder.test.js, the other two lengths in web-crypto.test.ts. The rows of types are in fixture/fsrouter.ts, fixture/spawn.ts and the test of bun-types against the schemas.
  • Three new tests in filesystem_router.test.ts pass on main too, and hold what is kept: options that are an array, the eight refusals of options that are not an object and of a route of the wrong type, and the path in Unable to find directory, which keeps a trailing slash.
  • Tests of both forms of expected, of setting the field of a cached getter, of two getters on one field, of the names in a heap snapshot and of an argument that throws stopping the next in test/internal/bindgen.test.ts. Without the checks of the arguments the last one crashes.
  • A debugger that pauses on the exception of a fatal decoder, calls decode() on it again and detaches the input: both calls end as they should. The same for the error of a string too long, in four encodings.
  • Strings kept per match, counted over 5000 matches on both builds: 1 and 1 for src, for scriptSrc and for both, 1 and 0 for kind, 5 and 4 for all eight getters.
  • The tests below with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1.
  • The existing tests of TextDecoder, TextDecoderStream, crypto, node:crypto, Bun.spawn, Bun.FileSystemRouter, Bun.YAML and Bun.TOML. S3Stat was driven against a local server.
  • bun run rust:check-all for Windows and macOS.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates bindgen argument conversion and cached-getter support. It migrates FileSystemRouter, Crypto, ResourceUsage, S3Stat, and TextDecoder to generated bindings. It also updates related public declarations, runtime registration, tests, and documentation.

Changes

Bindgen Runtime Migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Argument conversion and internal fields
src/codegen/*, src/jsc/bindgen*, src/jsc/bindings/Bindgen/*, src/jsc/bindings/JSWrapper.*, test/internal/bindgen.test.ts, docs/project/bindgen.mdx
Generated conversion supports custom argument messages and context-aware dictionary checks. Cached getters use named internal fields, and wrappers expose those fields to heap analysis. Tests cover argument errors and cache invalidation.
Filesystem router binding migration
src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.*, src/jsc/bindings/BunObject*, src/runtime/api.rs, src/router/lib.rs, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, docs/runtime/file-system-router.mdx, test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts, test/integration/bun-types/*
FileSystemRouter and MatchedRoute use generated bindings. Construction, matching, reload, route ownership, public declarations, and validation tests are updated.
Crypto binding migration
src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.*, src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.bind.ts, src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.rs, src/js/node/crypto.ts, src/runtime/crypto/crypto.classes.ts, src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.*, test/js/web/crypto/web-crypto.test.ts
Crypto methods use generated bindings. node:crypto obtains timingSafeEqual from the shared binding. The Node-specific host function and class metadata are removed.
ResourceUsage and S3Stat bindings
src/runtime/api/bun/subprocess/*, src/runtime/api/BunObject.classes.ts, src/runtime/webcore/S3Stat.*, src/runtime/api/S3Stat.classes.ts, src/runtime/webcore/S3File.rs, src/runtime/webcore.rs, src/jsc/JSValue.rs, src/jsc/bindings/*, docs/runtime/child-process.mdx, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, test/integration/bun-types/fixture/spawn.ts
ResourceUsage and S3Stat use generated bindings instead of their prior class definitions and host-function getters. Their JavaScript value conversion paths are updated, and timeval/BigInt helper bindings are removed.
TextDecoder binding migration
src/runtime/webcore/TextDecoder.*, src/runtime/webcore/encoding.classes.ts, src/runtime/webcore/EncodingLabel.rs, src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.*, src/jsc/lib.rs, test/js/web/encoding/text-decoder.test.js
TextDecoder uses generated bindings and mutable decoder state. Constructor and decode options, accessors, registration, and tests are updated.
Binding publication and type checks
test/integration/bun-types/*, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts
The publication map and comparison types account for generated classes and updated published shapes.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things and ruled them out: TextDecoder.decode() now borrowing a resizable ArrayBuffer in place (src/runtime/webcore/TextDecoder.rs) — the bindgen converts both arguments before the body runs and decode_slice never re-enters JS, so the buffer cannot be resized or detached mid-decode; and clear_internal_field used by reload() to forget the cached routes getter (src/jsc/bindgen.rs) — it stores the empty value, which needs no write barrier and is read as "not computed" by both the getter and the GC visitor.

Extended reasoning...

The PR migrates six classes (Crypto, TextDecoder, FileSystemRouter, MatchedRoute, ResourceUsage, S3Stat) from hand-written .classes.ts host functions to bindgen schemas, with generator changes in bindgen-emit.ts, bindgen.rs and the IDLConvert C++ headers; it touches crypto.getRandomValues/timingSafeEqual surface but only their argument plumbing. Two confirmed findings are posted inline, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the two adjacent concerns that were examined and did not hold.

Both points from the earlier review are addressed in 21e50d7: FileSystemRouter's constructor now takes the VM only after load_router returns (src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs:257-265), and getRandomValues/randomUUID/decode carry the IDL lengths with tests. Beyond the one inline nit, I also checked the cached-getter rewrite: every wrapper field now starts as undefined in the JSWrapper constructor, and reload() resets routes through set_routes_field, so the field-based cache matches the old slot semantics; the copyIfShared change to std::optional<MallocSpan> keeps the OOM throw and only avoids freeing a null span. Given the size and the generator changes, a human look is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...

The diff (48 files, +1062/-1491) migrates six classes (Crypto, TextDecoder, FileSystemRouter, MatchedRoute, ResourceUsage, S3Stat) from .classes.ts to bindgen schemas and changes the bindgen generator itself (cached getters as internal fields, string expected messages, dictionary context overload, JSBytesView copy ownership). It touches the Web Crypto surface (getRandomValues, randomUUID, timingSafeEqual) and shared generator infrastructure used by every bindgen class, which is why a human review is still warranted despite only a test-coverage nit surviving verification. The two concerns raised on the previous push were fixed in the latest commit.

Beyond the inline finding, I checked that the two points from my earlier reviews are addressed in the latest pushes: the constructor now re-takes the VM after load_router returns (src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs:300) so no two &mut VirtualMachine overlap, and the explicit length: 0 on getRandomValues is gone from src/runtime/webcore/Crypto.bind.ts, so the generated arity now follows the IDL.

Extended reasoning...

The three later commits reworked the FileSystemRouter constructor and the Crypto/TextDecoder schemas in response to prior feedback; I verified both earlier concerns from the code rather than from the author-resolved threads. One confirmed finding remains (reload() path rewriting config.dir), posted inline.

I reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; the follow-up commits address every inline point raised earlier (the VM is re-taken after load_router, the IDL lengths are restored, and the FileSystemRouter error-message paths now have tests). Because this is a 57-file migration that rewrites crypto.timingSafeEqual/getRandomValues, TextDecoder, and the bindgen generator and its C++ conversion layer, a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • filesystem_router.rs constructor/reload(): config.dir is still stored as the resolver's real path without a trailing separator, but the base branch did the same, so no regression.
  • MatchedRoute ownership of the decoded path and params — the decode buffer is taken over before url_path drops, so no dangling borrow.
  • Falsy non-string assetPrefix now throws where it was ignored; that follows from the schema's string type and matches the published types.
Extended reasoning...

The change moves six classes (Crypto, TextDecoder, FileSystemRouter, MatchedRoute, ResourceUsage, S3Stat) from .classes.ts host functions to bindgen b.class schemas, and extends the generator (string expected messages, cached getters as internal fields, heap-snapshot naming, borrowed resizable ArrayBuffer views) plus its C++ IDLConvert/JSWrapper/JSBytesView layer, net +1282/-1731 lines across 57 files. It touches security-relevant surface: crypto.timingSafeEqual, getRandomValues, and the byte-view borrowing used by TextDecoder.decode. The hunt ran dry with no findings, and the commits since the last review addressed all prior inline comments, but the size, the generator changes that affect every future schema, and the crypto surface put it outside the bar for approving without a human.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the new record path for prototype pollution through a query or param named __proto__ (src/jsc/bindings/Bindgen/ToJS.cpp Bun__Bindgen__putRecordEntry): it goes through putDirectMayBeIndex, which stores an own data property and never reaches the __proto__ setter, and the throw scope is checked after the put, so it is not affected.

Extended reasoning...

The latest pushes replace the dedicated createRecord helper with JSValue::create_empty_object and convert record keys with Zig::convertUTF8ToString before putDirectMayBeIndex, which is the path that MatchedRoute#query and #params now use for user-controlled key names. The put bypasses accessor semantics so an attacker-chosen __proto__ key becomes an own property, and an exception from the put propagates through call_false_is_throw.
