Status How I reproduced it (main at 5c6d4e2 and bun 1.4.3): // esm.mjs
export const version = "1.2.3";
export function add(a, b) { return a + b; }
export default { version: "the default object" };
// index.cjs
module.exports = require("./esm.mjs");
// app.mjs
import lib from "./index.cjs";
console.log("app:", lib.version, typeof lib.add);

WalkthroughThe parser records CommonJS redirect candidates on the AST. The bundler precomputes redirect-chain endpoints and rewrites imports when endpoint and import-use conditions allow. It also updates cross-chunk require handling and import-record patching. Tests cover bundling cases and ChangesCommonJS Redirect Resolution

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the removed path_to_source_index_map.put(source_path, ...) alias in patch_import_record_source_indices and the dropped PatchImportRecordsCtx fields in barrel_imports.rs: with the parser now emitting a real AST for the redirect file, later lookups of its path correctly get the file's own index, and the barrel path passes the same records through the same patch function, so those are behavior-preserving. The Leave frame now pushed unconditionally in ReachableFileVisitor::visit is also consistent with the redirect file being a kept module.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks how the bundler handles module.exports = require(x) shim files (parser keeps the full AST; the reachability visitor re-points import records per importing record based on whether the chain end is an ES module) across src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs and src/js_parser/parse/parse_entry.rs, with new tests in test/bundler and test/cli/test. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Three confirmed findings are posted inline, so a human review is already signalled; this note only records the adjacent refactor sites that were examined and found behavior-preserving.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

… per file A file that is only `module.exports = require(x)` is a redirect: the bundler links every import of the file to `x`. When `x` is an ES module, a default import and the namespace object read `module.exports`, which is the CommonJS view of `x` and not the exports of `x`. The bundle then read the wrong object, or the build failed with `No matching export` when `x` has no default export. The parser keeps the module and records `x`. The reachability walk finds where each such file ends before it re-points a record, and decides for each import record: `require()` and an import that reads only export names still link past the file, and so does every import over a file that is not an ES module. Any other import links to the file. A kept file alone makes no `require()` chunk of `x`. Where another `require()` makes one, the file loads that chunk. The path map no longer maps the file to `x`, so a late importer gets the same decision as an early one, and `bun test --changed` sees the edge from every importer to the file.

I reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; because this changes what a default or namespace import of a module.exports = require(x) file resolves to when x is an ES module (a user-visible linking change in the bundler core), a maintainer's look at that decision is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
find_redirect_ends/redirect_end/links_pastin src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs against the old per-file redirect loop: chain termination at MAX_REDIRECTS, therequire.resolve()path carve-out, and the removedhas_redirectEnter/Leave frame handling.- The new
share_require_chunksand the "alone makes no chunk" gate onwas_dynamic_importunder--splitting --target=bun, together with the SplitRequire and AloneMakesNoChunk tests. - The parser change in src/js_parser/parse/parse_entry.rs:
redirect_import_record_indexnow set afterto_ast, gated on!is_entry_point, and excluded from theunwrap_all_requireslift. - Ruled out: a kept redirect file's
require()of an ES module with top-level await now errors in the linker where the base linked past it, but this matches the two-statement spelling and Node'srequire()of an async module.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the bundler's reachability visitor and import-record patching in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs (plus barrel_imports.rs callers) and the CommonJS redirect detection in src/js_parser/parse/parse_entry.rs, replacing a per-file path redirect with a per-import decision computed before the walk, and adds 43 bundler cases and one bun test --changed case. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. It is a large (+769/-111) semantic change to how default and namespace imports of a one-line module.exports = require(x) file link when x is ESM, which alters output for existing bundles (the description's items 1-5 and 11) and so warrants a human decision rather than approval. The bug hunt ran dry with one candidate ruled out, and the code now contains the chunk-sharing path and the 64/65 chain tests related to earlier inline threads, though those threads were resolved by the author only.
