Problem

  • files: { "./src/config.ts": ... }, the override example in bun.d.ts, bundles the file on disk with success: true and 0 logs. A virtual ./src/generated.ts fails with Could not resolve: "./generated.ts".
  • file_map_from_js (src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs:103) stores keys as written. Lookups use absolute paths. A relative entrypoint key aborts debug builds: assertion failed: crate::is_absolute(self.text).

Fix

  • FileMap::put stores a ./ or ../ key once, under path.resolve(key). The written key stays an alias for an import with that text.
  • The output of such a key keeps the directory and name that the key text gave it on 1.4.x.
  • Verified: test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts (21 new tests, 16 fail without the fix), 4 unit tests.
  • Self-reviewed: 35 concerns raised, 32 addressed.

Background

Downsides

  • Builds that use a ./ key by its text change. The module path is absolute (onLoad args.path, __filename). Imports resolve from its directory, not the cwd.
  • Builds with no ./ key do not change: 238 compared builds equal main.
  • Two spellings of one path with different contents throw TypeError. A ./ key costs 3 more allocations and 24 instructions per import record. .text grows 11,264 bytes.
Notes

Questions for @Jarred-Sumner

Your open #45631 (--aot) also reads the keys of files (in_memory_files_by_path in src/bundler/aot/options.rs, told_path in src/bundler/aot/plugins.rs). It differs from this PR on three points. The merged already_read (src/runtime/cli/check_command.rs:617) agrees with #45631 on the first point.

Point #45631 This PR
A key with no ./, such as src/config.ts a path from the working directory a name: only its exact text matches it
Two keys for one path, with different contents the later key wins TypeError
What an onLoad plugin gets for a ./ key the key as written the absolute path
  1. Is a key with no ./ (src/config.ts, worker.js) a path from the cwd too? In this PR it is a name, as on 1.4.x: only an import or entrypoint with exactly that text gets it, and its module path is the key text. Your code reads it as a path, and path.join("./src", "config.ts") returns that spelling. A yes is one predicate in FileMap::put and file_spelled. A probe build in the self-review changed 47 of the 238 builds that I compare for keys without ./. The docs sentence "any other key is a name" is a proposal until you answer: if it ships, a later yes is a second breaking change for the same keys.
  2. Two keys that name one file in different ways and have different contents: TypeError, or does the later key win? This PR throws. Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 lets the later key win.
  3. What does a plugin get for a ./ key? Here it gets the absolute path (onLoad args.path, the importer of onResolve), so a key over a file on disk looks like that file to a plugin. Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 tells it the key as written, as 1.4.x does.
  4. Does an import of ./x still match a ./ key by its text from any directory? In this PR it does, after the key beside the importer. So the key ./config.ts also answers import "./config.ts" in src/db/index.ts and inside a dependency, before a real file beside that importer. 1.4.x does the same, and it is the only way a ./ key works there. To drop it is one line in FileMap::import. A build that imports a key by its text from another directory then fails.
  5. Which release takes the changes for a ./ key (see "What changes")? Merged now, they ship in the next release. A build that needs the 1.4.x behavior writes the key, and each import of it, without ./. A yes to question 1 takes that way out.

A path.resolve() key already gives the documented result on 1.4.x. If the rule of this PR is not wanted, the other fix is a docs change: absolute keys in the two examples.

Merge order

  1. bundler: keep the import kind of server-side HTML imports so import() and require() of the manifest link #38621, then bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605. bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 asks for that order.
  2. bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605, then this PR. This branch contains the branch of bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 (merged at d3663aa). Against that branch the diff is the key rule alone: +1,766/-164 in 9 files, of which +403/-158 is Rust that ships. After bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 is squash-merged, a merge of main into this branch conflicts in 3 hunks that both branches have (two in resolve_import_records, one in the imports of the test file).
  3. Fix use-after-free of BuildMessage.position.file: real lifetimes for Source, Path, ImportRecord and resolve results #46834 (lifetimes for Path and resolve results) and this branch change the same lines of FileMap in bundle_v2.rs. Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 reads FileMap.map, which is private here. The second of each pair to merge needs a small change.

This PR is a draft until #38605 is on main and a maintainer answers the questions above.

What changes for a key that starts with ./ or ../

The key is now the file at path.resolve(key).

  • An import that resolves to that path gets the file. On 1.4.x only an import with exactly the key text did. This is the fix for both documented examples.
  • With the text of its file, a ./ key that an import reaches gives the same build as the file: output text, metafile, [hash] names, class names of a CSS module. This holds when no tsconfig.json, package.json or external setting applies to the path (see Limits). Two tests compare the builds.
  • The path of the module is absolute (<cwd>/src/a.ts, was ./src/a.ts):
    • onLoad gets the absolute path in args.path. A filter anchored at ./ no longer matches. onResolve gets the absolute path as importer and an absolute resolveDir.
    • The inlined __filename and __dirname are absolute ("<cwd>/src/a.ts", was "./src/a.ts"). With target: "node" and format: "cjs" the same is true for import.meta.path, dir and url.
    • position.file of a log message is absolute (was ./src/bad.ts).
    • Imports in the file resolve from the directory of the key. On 1.4.x the resolver used the cwd for every import of such a module (src/resolver/resolver.rs:1392, "backwards compat with Bun 1.0 behavior"). Example: files: { "./src/a.ts": 'import "./helper.js"' } with helper.js in the cwd. It builds on 1.4.x and fails here with Could not resolve: "./helper.js". With helper.js in both directories, the file beside the key is bundled. A key above the cwd (../up.ts) that imports a package of the cwd fails the same way. One test has these builds, and the same keys written as names, which keep the 1.4.x result.
    • A plugin can resolve a specifier to the text of the key in its own namespace. If another import also names the key, the bundle has two copies of the module. On 1.4.x it had one.
  • The display path of a key that an import reaches is the path from the cwd (src/a.ts, was ./src/a.ts). It shows in bundle comments, metafile keys and log text. It is an input of [hash] names and of CSS module class names, so those change once.
  • The output of the key (an entry point, the chunk of a dynamic import, an imported page) has the directory and name of its path from the cwd. For a key whose text is normalized, that is what the key text gave it on 1.4.x. One test has five builds with [dir] in the chunk name that give the 1.4.x outputs. A key such as ../proj/src/a.ts in a directory that is not on disk was out/proj/src/a.js and is out/src/a.js now.
  • An import of ./x looks for the key at that path beside the importer first, then for the key with that text. 1.4.x tries the text first.
  • A bare specifier in CSS or HTML (@import "a.css") names a ./ key beside the importer. On 1.4.x only an absolute key did.
  • An import in a module whose path is a name (src/a.ts) gets a ./ key beside it (./src/both.js for ./both.js), as it gets an absolute key on 1.4.x.
  • files answers an import before the external option applies, as it does for an absolute key. With external: ["*"], 1.4.x leaves ./config.ts external. Here the key is bundled, and an import that the disk resolver answers (./config) stays external.
  • Two spellings of one path (./a.ts, ./x/../a.ts, /cwd/a.ts) are one file. With different contents Bun.build throws TypeError: files: the keys "./a.ts" and "./x/../a.ts" both name "/cwd/a.ts" and have different contents. On 1.4.x each key matched its own text. The same spelling twice (a\b after a/b) replaces the contents, as on 1.4.x.
  • The key is resolved against the cwd at the Bun.build() call, not at build time.
  • An in-memory HTML page that server code imports is bundled like a page on disk (this is bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605, and it changes more for a ./ key):
    • On 1.4.x the import of a ./index.html key kept its text. The built server loaded the emitted page at startup, from any directory. Now the server has the manifest, and Bun.serve finds the files of a manifest from the cwd. So it serves the page only when started from the outdir, like a server with a page on disk.
    • await import("./index.html") of such a page throws ReferenceError: require_<name> is not defined. A page on disk does the same on 1.4.3. bundler: keep the import kind of server-side HTML imports so import() and require() of the manifest link #38621 fixes both. A static import and require() give the manifest.

What does not change

Limits

  • Settings. A files hit does not pass the disk resolver, so the module gets nothing that the resolver adds for its path: the tsconfig.json settings (jsx, experimentalDecorators, emitDecoratorMetadata, useDefineForClassFields), sideEffects, type and browser of a package.json, and the external option. An absolute key does the same on 1.4.x. Example: an override of a .tsx file in a project with jsxImportSource: "preact" imports react/jsx-dev-runtime when the import is ./page.tsx, and the preact runtime when it is ./page (the disk resolver answers that one). If one build has both imports, the first one that the bundler resolves decides: of 60 builds on the release build, 47 import the react runtime and 13 the preact runtime. An absolute key does the same on 1.4.3 (49 and 11) and on bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 (47 and 13). On 1.4.x a ./ key was ignored, so the build was stable. No open PR changes this. A comment on this PR has two prototypes for it and their faults. One test pins both results.
  • Entry points. A files hit for an entry point does not take the shared steps that bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 gives an import. An in-memory .tsx entry point gets the default JSX options, not those of the build (bundler: apply the jsx option to entry points that come from files: #38609), and an in-memory HTML entry point of a server build is bundled for the server (bundler: bundle HTML entry points for the browser on every entry path of a server build #38594). That is so on 1.4.x for an entry point with the text of its key, and it does not change here. For that reason an entry point that is the absolute path of a ./ key goes to the disk resolver. With no file on disk it fails with ModuleNotFound, where the absolute key builds.
  • Other readers. A ./ key is the file for an import and for an entry point. A macro and what it imports, the resolver's own reads of package.json and tsconfig.json, and the type check of a type-only import (bundler: type-check the files text of an entry that a plugin loads or that only types use #46320) still read the disk, with success: true.
  • The disk resolver does not see files. An import without the extension (./config) and a tsconfig.json paths alias reach only a key for a file on disk (bundler: resolve Bun.build files imports without the extension, like on disk #41285).
  • Symlinks. Bun does not resolve a symlink in a key, and the disk resolver gives a module its real path. So a key for a file behind a symlink must be its real path. A key written through node_modules/pkg has no effect when pkg is a link (the isolated linker makes such links). The docs say so, and one test pins it. The branch robobun/301c3c23/files-symlink-keys has a change for this, with no PR.
  • An absolute key with .., // or /./ is matched only by an import or entrypoint with exactly that text, as on 1.4.x, and the TypeError for two spellings does not see it. The docs say to write the key as path.resolve() returns it. To normalize such a key in put is a change for absolute keys, so it is not in this PR.
  • Windows. An absolute key that both routes reach is two modules (C:/proj/a.ts from files, C:\proj\a.ts from the resolver), on main and here. This is read from the code. A ./ key is one module: its path has the spelling of the resolver (File.native).
  • process.chdir() after the Bun.build() call: a key, and the display path of a key that an import reaches, keep the cwd of the call. All other paths use the cwd at build time, as on main: the disk resolver, the relative imports of a module whose path is a name, outdir, and the output name of an entry point with the text of its key. The output of a ./ key that the disk resolver reaches is then named by the path of its file, as on main. Keep the process's working directory in one place, bun_core::cwd #40372 moves every read of the cwd to one place.
  • A race that this diff does not cause. ASAN reported it once in about 15,500 builds on a debug build: heap-use-after-free in MiniEventLoop::loop_ptr (src/event_loop/MiniEventLoop.rs:184). The caller is parse_worker::run_from_thread_pool_impl, after the bundle thread dropped its event loop. event_loop: post to a MiniEventLoop through raw pointers and publish last #37883 is the open fix.

Not needed for this PR, but open

  • The display path of an absolute key. An absolute key that an import reaches shows as /cwd/src/a.ts, and a ./ key shows as src/a.ts (File.pretty), like a file on disk. So a ./ key and its absolute twin have different metafile keys and [hash] names. bundler: give files imports the same display path as disk files #38620 has a change for absolute keys. It is in conflict with main.
  • The disk resolver and files (question 5 in an earlier version of this description). check: true reads files as an overlay on the disk. For the bundler, a hook like standalone_module_graph is not enough: it is an exact-path check before finalize_result (src/resolver/resolver.rs:1346), so it gives no extension probing and no settings. A probe in the self-review needed hooks in 7 resolver functions (about 180 lines), and it cannot read a package.json or tsconfig.json that is only in memory, because DirInfo is one map for the process. The key rule in FileMap::put stays in both designs.
  • A warning for a key that nothing reads. A probe in the self-review warned on 11 of the 245 files builds of the test suite, and only 3 of those keys were without effect.

Overlap with open PRs

Two debug assertions

  • enqueue_entry_item asserted that the path of an entry point is absolute. LinkerContext::generate_isolated_hash asserted that the display path is not the text of the path. A key that is a name (virtual:entry.ts, worker.ts) as an entry point stopped debug builds at both. Release builds always built it. Both assertions now accept a path that is a name in files.

Measurements (release builds of #38605 at d3663aa and of this head, same machine)

  • instructions:u, one CPU, 2,001 modules and 19,946 import records, interleaved runs, median: no files 542.11 M (bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605: 542.21 M), an absolute key 573.05 M (574.16 M), a name 573.02 M (574.11 M), a ./ key 574.70 M (574.22 M). So a ./ key adds 24 instructions per import record, and a build with an absolute key or a name costs about 55 fewer. With no files the difference is inside the spread of the runs (quartiles 541.98 to 542.17 M and 542.07 to 542.26 M). A second fixture with no files (the 20,000 modules of edgecase/DeepImportDiamondDAG) gives 1,589.64 M against 1,590.80 M.
  • Release binary: .text +11,264 bytes (82,165,641 to 82,176,905), .rodata +0, file +12,288 bytes. The 25 changed functions sum to +11,240 bytes, and FileMap::put is 6,434 of them.
  • FileMap::put, 64,000 ./ keys and then the same keys written with \ and other contents: 949.00 M instructions for the whole process (bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605: 567.13 M), and 0.09 s of CPU time (0.04 s, the second version of this PR 16 s). 128,000 different ./ keys: 924.28 M (498.34 M). So a ./ key costs about 3,300 instructions more to store.
  • Syscalls, documented example (./src/config.ts on disk): no syscall names the file (bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605: 1 open, and the disk text). The entry point lookup makes no syscall.
  • Allocations to store a key, read from the code: 6 for a ./ key (the joined path, the display path and the alias are new), 3 for any other key as on main. Windows has 1 more for a ./ key (the path as the resolver spells it).

History of this PR

Verification

  • bun bd test test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts: 62 pass, 1 skip (needs Windows). The release build gives the same.
  • This PR adds 21 tests. On a release build of bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605: 16 fail, 4 pass, 1 skip. Two of the 4 are builds that must give the 1.4.x result (the outputs of a ./ key, and entry points). On a release build of main and on the released 1.4.3, the 9 failing tests of bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 fail too. On a debug build of main the child process stops at assertion failed: crate::is_absolute(self.text).
  • 4 unit tests for put, the conflict rule, import lookups and entry point lookups. bun run rust:miri -p bun_bundler passes (7 tests).
  • test/cli/check/check.test.ts: "a file that's only in files can have a relative name" is no longer skipped on debug and ASAN builds. It passes on the debug build and on the release build.
  • Debug build: test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts 68 pass, bundler_naming.test.ts 27, bundler_bun.test.ts 22, bundler_html.test.ts 26, html-import-manifest.test.ts 10, bundler_splitting.test.ts 209, test/js/bun/css/doesnt_crash.test.ts 61.
  • Release build: bun-build-api.test.ts 89 pass, bundler_edgecase.test.ts 188, bundler_splitting.test.ts 209, bundler_plugin.test.ts 68, bundler_naming.test.ts 27, bundler_bun.test.ts 22, bundler_html.test.ts 26, html-import-manifest.test.ts 10, and the 6 Bun.build and files tests of check.test.ts.
  • cargo clippy for bun_bundler and bun_runtime. cargo check for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc. macOS and Windows were not run locally. The Windows lanes of CI ran the test file on the two heads before this one, and it passed there.
  • Related to Option to provide all source files for bundler from memory #5145. The closing comment there shows ./ keys. Take that shape with an import between two keys in a subdirectory (./src/index.ts imports ./lib/a.ts). It fails on 1.4.3 and on main with Could not resolve: "./lib/a.ts", and it builds on this branch. A search of the issues found no user report of this symptom.
  • Baselines: the released 1.4.2 and 1.4.3, a release build of main at 7d240c1, and a release build of bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 at d3663aa.

…resolution paths

A server-side import of an HTML file only became a manifest module plus a
browser entry point when the import record was resolved by the bulk pass in
resolve_import_records / process_resolve_queue. Records resolved one at a
time (an onResolve plugin declining the import, an onResolve plugin returning
the HTML file's path) and imports of in-memory `files:` entries bundled the
HTML as an ordinary module of the server graph instead, so the import either
failed with 'No matching export in "page.html" for import "default"' or, for
require() and in-memory files, built into output that never had a manifest.

Factor the decision into is_server_html_import, make
generate_server_html_module return the manifest module's index, and add
enqueue_server_html_import for the one-at-a-time paths: it creates the
manifest module in the importing graph and parses the HTML file as a browser
entry point unless the browser graph already has it.
…disk

Bun.build({ files }) resolved an import that hits the in-memory file map in
a separate branch of resolve_import_records that duplicated the tail of the
disk resolution and had drifted from it. Two things it did not do:

- importing an .html file into a server build did not turn the import into
  an HTML import manifest: the output kept a literal import of the virtual
  path and the page's scripts were bundled for the server target
- a url asset referenced from an in-memory .html file (for example
  <link rel="manifest" href="./manifest.json">) kept its parsed loader
  instead of being copied to the output as a file

A file map hit now only substitutes for the resolver's result and then goes
through the shared steps, keeping the two things that are specific to
virtual files: the jsx options come from the transpiler (there is no
tsconfig.json to consult) and the display path is the map key as-is.
…side generate_server_html_module

The two call sites that reserve their map slot with get_or_put now fill it
the same way their non-HTML siblings do, and the two that use get-then-put
call put; generate_server_html_module only creates the module.
…nifest module

The linker wraps a module (or gives it its own chunk) based on the Require /
Dynamic kind of the records importing it, and the printer emits the import
from the same kind, so replacing the kind with HtmlManifest is what breaks
import() and require() of an HTML file. The manifest wiring does not depend
on it: the module is found through html_imports.server_source_indices and the
browser graph's path map. Do not introduce the rewrite on the paths added
here; the existing one on the bulk path is removed separately.

Status: draft. This branch is stacked on #38605 and contains that branch. Merge order: #38621, then #38605, then this PR. Against #38605 the diff is the key rule alone.

How I reproduced the original problem, on bun 1.4.2, on bun 1.4.3 and on a release build of main (7d240c1): in a folder with src/index.ts (it imports ./config.ts, which is on disk), Bun.build({ entrypoints: ["./src/index.ts"], files: { "./src/config.ts": ... } }) returns success: true with 0 logs and bundles the copy on disk. files: { "./src/generated.ts": ... } fails with Could not resolve: "./generated.ts". Both keys are the examples in bun.d.ts. With this branch both builds use the in-memory text.

Five questions need a maintainer's decision. They are at the start of the notes in the description. #45631 answers three of them the other way.

CI on the current head: 180 of 181 jobs passed. The red job is test/js/first_party/ws/ws-proxy.test.ts on Windows 2019 x64. This PR does not touch it, and it fails on main too. test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts passes on every lane, with all 63 tests on Windows x64 and Windows aarch64.

This PR replaces #38650.

Walkthrough

FileMap now resolves build file keys against the build working directory and uses them for entry-point and import resolution. Runtime setup handles key conflicts and root selection. Tests and documentation cover key matching, path normalization, import behavior, and output paths.

Changes

Build file key resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Key classification and storage
src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs, docs/bundler/index.mdx, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts
FileMap stores resolved paths and written key spellings, normalizes separators, and reports conflicting contents. Runtime setup populates the map through its methods. Documentation and tests cover key resolution and conflicts.
Entry-point, import, and output path resolution
src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs, test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts, test/cli/check/check.test.ts
Entry-point and import lookup distinguish written keys from path matches and apply different lookup rules to absolute, relative, and bare specifiers. Resolver results preserve display paths. Tests cover entry points, imports, plugins, and output paths.
Runtime setup and root selection
src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs, src/runtime/api/js_bundle_completion_task.rs, docs/bundler/index.mdx
Root selection constructs a path under the filesystem top-level directory when its conditions are met. The completion task checks whether config.files is empty. Documentation states the exact-key condition for the root rule.

`Bun.build({ files })` stored each key as written and looked it up with
absolute paths. A relative key matched only an import or an entry point
with the same text, so the two relative-key examples in the docs did
not work: the override bundled the file on disk with no error, and the
virtual file failed with `Could not resolve`.

`FileMap::put` is now the one place that spells a key. A relative path
(`./src/config.ts`, `src/config.ts`) is joined onto the cwd of the
`Bun.build()` call and the file is stored once, under that path. The
key as written stays an alias, so an import with the same text still
names the file. An absolute key is stored as written. A key with a
scheme, or with no `./` and no file extension, is a name and keeps its
text as the path of its module. Two keys for one path with different
contents are a TypeError.

Lookups stay exact hash probes. A relative path for a file on disk
replaces the contents only: the disk resolver still resolves the
module, so its tsconfig.json, package.json and asset rules apply, and
the parse task reads the key. A file that is only in memory takes the
in-memory route, and its display path is its path from the cwd.

A relative entry point is joined onto the cwd (it was joined onto the
parent of the cwd). The `[dir]` of an output whose directory is not on
disk but is inside the root is the path from the root.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things in the new FileMap helpers and ruled them out: the path_buffer_pool guards in file, file_spelled, file_in_dir and file_beside drop at return, but every returned (&[u8], &File) borrows the map-owned key and value, not the pooled buffer; and spelled.put_assume_capacity is called without a matching reserve, but on StringHashMap that method is an alias for the growing put, so it cannot overflow.

Extended reasoning...

The change reworks the Bun.build files in-memory map in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs into a cwd-joined two-level structure with new resolution precedence rules, plus callers in JSBundler.rs, computeChunks.rs, types, docs and a large new test suite. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface, but it is a user-visible behavior change to module resolution with ten confirmed findings posted inline and the hunt stopped at the bug cap rather than running dry, so a human maintainer should weigh the design rules and the regressions.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

A key that starts with `./` or `../` is now the file at that path from
the cwd of the `Bun.build()` call, and nothing more. It takes the route
that an absolute key takes in 1.4.x.

Removed from the first version of this branch:

- The rule that a relative key for a file on disk replaces the contents
  only and takes the disk resolver's route. A key for a directory, a
  symlink or a path with another letter case was ignored because of it,
  and one key had two routes.
- The reading of a key with a file extension and no `./` as a path.
  Such a key is a name again, as in 1.4.x.
- The `[dir]` change in `computeChunks.rs` and the default root for a
  directory that is not on disk. Other changes own those.

Added:

- A bare import in JavaScript does not name a `./` key beside the
  importer. In CSS and HTML it does. An absolute key keeps its behavior.
- The same spelling of a key written twice replaces the contents of a
  file that has no other key. Two different spellings of one path with
  different contents throw, in any order, and the error names the path.
- An entry point that is the path of a key, written another way, is for
  the disk resolver when a file is on disk at that path. The parse task
  reads the key. If nothing is on disk, the key is the entry point.
- An entry point keeps its written name only when it is written like
  its `./` key.
- A name can be an entry point on debug builds: two debug assertions
  expected an absolute path.
- Unit tests for `put` and the lookups. The tests ask one child process
  for each case and set no timeout.

A commit for this PR: a files key finds its file through a symlinked directory

Commit 2aea08557b is one commit on top of the head of this PR (cfd54fa1d9). See the comparison. git cherry-pick 2aea08557b applies it.

It is not a separate PR. A review of it said that it belongs here. This PR documents the limit ("The key must be the real path of the file"). The thread at bundle_v2.rs:953 asks to close that limit in this PR. The commit also edits the lookup code that the threads at :941, :953, :1028 and :1188 discuss.

What breaks today

  • With src -> real-src, Bun.build({ entrypoints: ["./src/index.ts"], files: { "./src/config.ts": ... } }) returns success: true, 0 logs, and the text on disk. The resolver names the module real-src/config.ts, and FileMap::get asks for that path.
  • The same happens for a package that is linked into node_modules (a workspace link, the isolated linker) and for an absolute key below /tmp on macOS.
  • In a matrix of 28 link shapes, 4 bundle the in-memory text on 1.4.3, 9 on this PR, and 26 with the commit. One more is a conflict of two keys and is now a build error.
  • In that matrix this PR turns one shape from in-memory text (1.4.3) into disk text: an entry point written exactly like a relative key, below a linked directory. The commit restores it.

What the commit does

  • FileMap::bind runs once on the bundle thread, before any lookup. BundleV2::set_file_map is the one way to set the map, and it calls bind.
  • For each path key, bind asks the resolver for the path that the resolver gives a file in that directory. When a symlink makes that another path, bind records real path -> key in a table beside the map (linked).
  • FileMap::found reads the table when a lookup misses the map. A lookup that hits the map does not change. The bytes of a key are stored once.
  • The lookups return a Found in place of the (path, file) pair. File::is_on_disk is now OnDisk::is, with one cell for the key and one for its real path.
  • Resolver::real_path_below_links answers from a cached DirInfo that has a real path. For a directory with none it applies the rule of dir_info_uncached to the disk with lstat. It adds nothing to the directory cache.
  • A module of the in-memory route keeps the path of its key, also when an import reaches the key by the real path. So one key is one module.
  • Two keys that are paths to one file and have different contents fail the build. The log has the existing message and a note with the real path.

Cost

Release builds of a7dfada779 and of the commit on that base.

  • No files: 0 more syscalls. Instructions for a 2,001-module build: 505.1 M against 505.2 M (median of 7, the spread of the base is 4.2 M).
  • With path keys: 1 lstat for each directory level from the root to a key directory, once for each build. That is +15 for 100 keys in 10 directories (5 shared levels and the 10 directories), and +1 for the docs example with /app/index.ts.
  • No syscall for each key. No syscall on the JS thread.
  • About 350 instructions for each path key in bind (10,000 keys). A name costs nothing that the measurement can see.
  • A 200 MB key through a link has the same peak RSS as the same key by its real path.
  • .text grows by 17,664 bytes.

How it meets the open threads

  • :941 (a key that names a directory) and the file-symlink part of :953: the commit does not change them. OnDisk::is is the one function that answers "is a file on disk here" for a key and for its real path. An lstat there that accepts a regular file only fixes both shapes for both paths.
  • :953 (a key that differs from the file name in case): not changed. The fix in the thread takes the in-memory route when the real path is not the key. For a key below a linked directory, an import that the resolver resolves to the file still gets the text on disk, because the lookup asks for the real path. The table answers that lookup.
  • :1028 and :1188 (the route of a key): the table has no flags. A key through a link takes the route of its own File, like the same key by its real path. The rule that this PR picks applies to both.

Not covered

  • A key that is itself a symlink to a file.
  • An onResolve plugin that returns the path through the link for a key written by its real path.
  • A link that is first made during the build.
  • external paths through a link.
  • The root rule on the JS thread (contains_entry_point) runs before bind.
  • Windows and macOS were not run. cargo check passes for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and aarch64-apple-darwin. The tests use junctions on Windows.

Tests

test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts has 18 new tests. On a debug build of this PR, 15 fail and 3 pass (those 3 guard behavior that must not change). With the commit: 62 pass, 2 skip. The commit also replaces the "must be the real path" sentence in docs/bundler/index.mdx and bun.d.ts.

All ten review findings reproduce on cfd54fa. 1821799 answers them with a smaller change. The disk route, the reading of src/a.ts as a path, the [dir] change and the default root change are gone. One rule stays: a key that starts with ./ or ../ is the file at path.resolve(key), and it behaves as that absolute key does on 1.4.x. Each thread has its answer.

@Jarred-Sumner, three rules need your decision. The notes in the description start with the details:

  1. Is a key with a file extension and no ./ (src/a.ts) a path from the cwd too? In this PR it stays a name, as on 1.4.x.
  2. Does an import of ./x still match a key by its text from any directory? In this PR it does, after the key beside the importer.
  3. Which release takes the changes for builds that use a ./ key by its text today? The module path becomes absolute (onLoad args.path, __filename), and the imports of the key resolve from its directory, not from the cwd.

If the rule is not wanted, the other fix is a docs change: absolute keys in the two examples.

Conflicts:
- src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, on_resolve: the non-HTML branch keeps the
  requested_file_loader call and the is_entry_point field from main.
- src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, resolve_import_records: the separate branch
  for in-memory files stays removed. The shared steps already use
  forced_jsx_development from main.
- test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts: keeps the tests of both sides.
…odule

resolve_import_records cloned the jsx options of the build for each
import record that the `files` map answers. A record whose module is
already in the graph or in the resolve queue does not need them. The
clone now happens where the parse task of a new module gets its jsx
options, as it did before the in-memory branch was merged into the
shared steps.
Without a manifest the bundle keeps an import of the page's path. No
file is at that path, so the bundle exits at startup with "Cannot find
module". The test builds to an outdir and runs the output.

The current head (da2faca) covers the abort for a name entry point. I do not open a second PR for it.

I checked it on a debug and ASAN build with a matrix of 40 builds, one child process each. It has 12 keys: 9 names (such as virtual:entry.ts, my-pkg, https://host/a.js and a/../b), /virt/abs.ts, ./rel.ts and C:/app/index.ts. Each key is built as an entry point, as an import, and as an import that an onResolve plugin declines. The other four builds are a name entry point with a syntax error, the same name twice, a name entry point with an onLoad plugin, and C:/app/index.ts from the cwd /.

Head Builds that exit 134
cfd54fa 21 of 40: 14 at crate::is_absolute(self.text), 7 at the pointer assertion in generate_isolated_hash
da2faca 0 of 40

One defect with the same cause is still present at this head. It is also on main and on 1.4.x, so this PR does not cause it.

  • run_resolver sets the display path of a files import on a local copy (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3137) and passes the untouched Result to enqueue_parse_task (:3146). The parse task copies that path. The module reaches the linker with pretty and text as one slice.
  • generate_isolated_hash then computes the display path on a pool worker and stores it in the shared Source.path. Other chunks read that path at the same time.
  • Repro: two entry points import https://host/a.js from files, with naming: "[name]-[hash].[ext]". An onResolve plugin returns undefined for that import. On a debug build of da2faca, 80 identical builds give 3 different sets of output names (54, 13 and 13 builds). On a release build of cfd54fa, 200 builds give 3 sets (175, 20 and 5). Without the plugin each gives 1 set.
  • The metafile key of a declined import also differs from the build without the plugin. A name shows as https:/host/a.js, not https://host/a.js. An absolute key shows as its path from the cwd (for example ../../../virt/abs.ts), not as the key (/virt/abs.ts).
  • resolve_import_records writes the path back before ParseTask::init (:7377). The same write-back in run_resolver is 8 added and 2 removed lines. A release build of main at 7d240c1 with only that change gives 1 set in 200 builds, equal to the set without the plugin.
  • bundler: give files imports the same display path as disk files #38620 has this write-back together with a change of the display rule. bundler: resume the shared resolve pass for imports that went to onResolve plugins #45408 removes run_resolver. I did not open a third PR for it.
The write-back, on main at 7d240c1

At da2faca the first assignment is inside if path_primary.pretty.as_ptr() == path_primary.text.as_ptr(). The write-back goes after that block.

A different fix for the abort is on the branch robobun/900aa062/files-name-entrypoint-assert. It is one commit on cfd54fa and does not apply to da2faca.

  • It keeps both assertions as they were. FileMap lookups return the file they found. The caller builds the module path only for a new module, with a display path of its own. A files entry point does not go through assert_file_path_is_absolute, path_with_pretty_initialized and dupe_alloc.
  • It changes the display path of an entry point whose name relative() rewrites (https://host/a.js, pkg/, a/../b). So it depends on the answer to question 1.

The run_resolver and on_resolve hunks chose manifest or module from the
`.html` extension before an onLoad plugin ran. A plugin that takes an
.html import in onResolve and loads it as JS then got a manifest with no
`index`. bun 1.4.2 gives that import the module of the plugin. Those
routes need the choice after onLoad, so they leave this branch.

What stays is the stand-in in resolve_import_records: an import that
the `files` map answers takes the shared steps. is_server_html_import,
enqueue_server_html_import and the changed signature of
generate_server_html_module have no caller left that needs them. Main's
text is back there.

Tests: html-import-manifest.test.ts is main's file again. The merge had
left a second readManifests in it that shadowed main's helper. The two
plugin tests of bundler_files.test.ts leave with the hunks. New tests:
Bun.serve serves the page from a bundle for bun and for node, the
`input` of the manifest, import attributes and the `loader` option on
an in-memory page, a page on disk with an in-memory url asset, and a
standalone HTML build.
With two `break` sites in the resolve loop, the second binding
`let mut resolve_result = resolve_result;` became a real copy of the
296-byte result for each import record. One mutable binding takes the
value from either site directly. The `files` lookup moves into the loop
so that no optional result lives across it.

Release builds, 2,001 modules and 22,000 import records, no `files`,
medians of 31 interleaved runs: 548.03 M instructions on main, 548.87 M
with the second binding, 548.21 M with this commit. The quartile ranges
of main and of this commit overlap.
A `files` key keeps "/" separators on Windows. The root has "\\"
there, so the path code does not make the key relative and `input` is
the whole key. The exact value stays pinned on the other platforms.
…rt_records`

An import that `files` answers took its own branch in
`resolve_import_records`, a copy of the tail of the disk branch. The
copy did not do two things that the disk branch does:

- An HTML import from server code did not become a manifest. The output
  kept an import of the path of the page, and the scripts of the page
  were bundled for the server target.
- A url asset of an in-memory HTML page, such as
  `<link rel="manifest" href="./manifest.json">`, kept its parsed loader
  and was not copied to the output.

A `files` hit now stands in for the resolver's result and takes the
shared steps. It keeps the JSX options of the build and its own display
path.

This is commit ce68741 of #38605, applied to this branch.
…not on disk

`[dir]` in an output name is the directory of a file from the root.
`compute_chunks` opens the directory to get its real path. If the
directory is not on disk (a file of `files`, or a path that a plugin
names), it normalized the path, and that dropped the leading `/` of an
absolute path. The output then went to `out/<absolute path>/...`.

A directory inside the root now keeps its path, so `[dir]` is its path
from the root. A directory outside the root is unchanged.

#38679 changes the same fallback for every directory.
…/` key

An entry point names a key by its text, or by the absolute path of its
file. The lookup of a relative entry point from the cwd is gone: it
changed builds that have no `./` key. Any other entry point goes to the
disk resolver, and a relative import in a module that has a name as its
path uses the cwd at build time.

`FileMap::put` decides a conflict from a count of the spellings of a
file. It searched all keys each time a key was written again.

`FileMap::contains` is true for the path of a module or the text of a
key. `is_written_as_key` is the test for the default root.

On Windows the module of a `./` key has the path that the disk resolver
gives the file, so an import through `files` and an import through the
disk resolver name one module.

The docs say what each kind of key is, and that Bun does not resolve a
symlink in a key.
On Windows the key keeps "/" separators and the root has "\\". The
path code finds no common root for the two forms, so `input` is the
whole key. The test now expects that value instead of a suffix match.
#38605 is now this change alone: a `files` hit takes the shared steps of
`resolve_import_records`. This commit replaces the earlier copy of that
change with the current one. The hunks in `resolve_import_records` and
the tests of #38605 are the same text as there, so the two branches
agree when #38605 merges.

Two places differ from #38605:
- `FileMap::resolve` has a fourth argument (a bare specifier in CSS or
  HTML is a relative path).
- A `./` key keeps its display path.

The tests of this PR are now before the block of #38605 in
`bundler_files.test.ts`.
… into robobun/40800912/files-relative-keys

This branch is now based on #38605 at d3663aa. The two conflicts are in
text that both branches have: the hunk of #38605 in resolve_import_records,
and its tests. The result keeps the two places where this branch differs
(the fourth argument of FileMap::resolve, and the display path of a ./ key).
The output of a module that a `./` or `../` key of `files` names now takes
the directory and the name of its path from the cwd. `LinkerGraph::load`
reads it from `FileMap::output_path` for an entry point, for the chunk of
a dynamic import and for an imported page. That is the name the key text
gave the output on 1.4.x. The special case for an entry point that is
written like its key is gone.

With this, a `./` key does not need the `[dir]` rule for a directory that
is not on disk. That rule leaves this branch. It is a fix for absolute
keys and for paths that a plugin names, and belongs in its own PR.

Also:
- `FileMap::file_beside` joins a relative importer onto the cwd of the
  call, where `put` joins the keys. It used the cwd at build time.
- `FileMap::is_written_as_key` was `contains` under a second name.
- Tests pin what changes for an import inside a `./` key, for `external`,
  and for an entry point that is not the text of a key.
- `bun.d.ts` no longer says that a key must match how it is imported.
An entry point that `files` answers does not take the shared steps of an
import: it gets the default JSX options and the target of the build. That
is so on 1.4.x for an entry point with the text of its key.

An entry point that is the absolute path of a `./` key was answered by
`files` too. With the file on disk, 1.4.x sends it to the disk resolver.
Do the same: the parse task reads the key at the path that the resolver
finds, and the module has the settings of the file.

More evidence for question 5 (should the disk resolver see files).

The first entry under Limits says that a key over a file on disk gets the react or the preact runtime by import order. I built a fix for that two times. I opened no PR for it. A review found faults in both versions, and the faults come from the rule, not from one line of code.

The rule was: a key that is also a file on disk replaces only the contents of that file. A key with no file stays as it is on main. That rule needs a check "is this key a file on disk".

version what it does size branch
1 each creator of a module for a key takes the resolver's result for the path of the key +304 -192, 5 call sites robobun/6b70addd/files-key-disk-route
2 FileMap::resolve gives no answer for a key that is a file on disk, so the resolver resolves the import +74 -7 robobun/6b70addd/files-key-resolve-gate

Both stop the split. With version 2, 60 of 60 equal builds import the preact runtime (main 179664e: 32 react, 28 preact).

Faults of version 2. I ran each on release builds of main 179664e and of the branch:

  1. The check reads the resolver's cached directory listing. A script writes a file beside itself and builds it with a key. The first build of the process gives react in 7 of 12 runs and preact in 5. Main gives react in 12 of 12.
  2. An import that only files joined to the directory of the importer changes, with no log. import "leaf.ts" with packages: "external" stays external. A relative key ./src/mod.ts that imports ./leaf.ts gets <cwd>/leaf.ts from disk, not the key at <cwd>/src/leaf.ts.
  3. A key at a path that is a directory or a symlink stays in memory. But the check already made the resolver read that directory. A tsconfig.json there that does not parse fails the build with Unexpected end of file.

Version 1 does not have fault 2, because files still answers the import. It uses the same kind of check, so faults 1 and 3 apply to it. I did not run them on version 1.

As far as I can see, a version with none of these faults needs all of this:

#43190 has a check of this kind for a path that a plugin names (adopt_resolver_result).

The two other rules need no check on disk:

  • The resolver sees files (this question). Every key takes the settings of its path. Bun.build({ check: true }) already treats a key with no file "like one on disk" (test/cli/check/check.test.ts:24674).
  • A key always takes the Bun.build options, also when the resolver finds it.

The version 2 branch has 21 tests for a key over a file on disk, in test/bundler/bundler_files.test.ts. All 21 fail on main and on 1.4.3. 18 of them only compare the build with the key to the build without it, and an onLoad gate forces the creation order. Those 18 hold for each rule that gives such a key the settings of its path. The other 3 pin the edges of the rule above.

So the fix for the split waits for the answer to question 5.

Repro scripts for the three faults

Fault 1. Put this beside a tsconfig.json with { "compilerOptions": { "jsx": "react-jsx", "jsxImportSource": "preact" } } and run it 12 times. It prints the JSX runtime of build 1 and of build 2.

import { writeFileSync, rmSync } from "node:fs";
import { join } from "node:path";
const entry = join(import.meta.dir, "generated-entry.tsx");
const text = `console.log(<div>entry</div>);`;
writeFileSync(entry, text);
const out = [];
for (let i = 0; i < 2; i++) {
  const r = await Bun.build({ entrypoints: [entry], files: { [entry]: text }, external: ["preact", "react"] });
  out.push(/"([^"]+)\/jsx-dev-runtime"/.exec(await r.outputs[0].text())[1]);
}
rmSync(entry);
console.log(out.join(" / "));
  • main: react / react, 12 of 12.
  • version 2: react / preact 7 times, preact / preact 5 times.
  • Without the key, both builds give preact / preact.

Fault 2. Main prints MEM_leaf for both builds. Version 2 prints null for the first (no marker, the import stays external) and DISK_decoy for the second.

import { mkdtempSync, mkdirSync, writeFileSync, realpathSync } from "node:fs";
import { tmpdir } from "node:os";
import { join } from "node:path";
const marker = async r => (r.success ? (await r.outputs[0].text()).match(/(MEM|DISK)_\w+/g) : r.logs.map(l => l.message));

const a = realpathSync(mkdtempSync(join(tmpdir(), "bare-")));
writeFileSync(join(a, "entry.ts"), `import "leaf.ts";`);
writeFileSync(join(a, "leaf.ts"), `console.log("DISK_leaf");`);
process.chdir(a);
console.log(await marker(await Bun.build({
  entrypoints: ["./entry.ts"], packages: "external", throw: false,
  files: { [join(a, "leaf.ts")]: `console.log("MEM_leaf");` },
})));

const b = realpathSync(mkdtempSync(join(tmpdir(), "relative-")));
mkdirSync(join(b, "src"));
writeFileSync(join(b, "entry.ts"), `import "./src/mod.ts";`);
writeFileSync(join(b, "src/mod.ts"), ``);
writeFileSync(join(b, "src/leaf.ts"), `console.log("DISK_leaf");`);
writeFileSync(join(b, "leaf.ts"), `console.log("DISK_decoy");`);
process.chdir(b);
console.log(await marker(await Bun.build({
  entrypoints: ["./entry.ts"], throw: false,
  files: { "./src/mod.ts": `import "./leaf.ts";`, [join(b, "src/leaf.ts")]: `console.log("MEM_leaf");` },
})));

Fault 3. Main prints MEM_key. Version 2 prints Unexpected end of file.

import { mkdtempSync, mkdirSync, writeFileSync, realpathSync, symlinkSync } from "node:fs";
import { tmpdir } from "node:os";
import { join } from "node:path";
const root = realpathSync(mkdtempSync(join(tmpdir(), "symlink-")));
mkdirSync(join(root, "app"));
writeFileSync(join(root, "app/tsconfig.json"), `{ "compilerOptions": `);
writeFileSync(join(root, "app/file.ts"), `console.log("DISK_file");`);
symlinkSync(join(root, "app"), join(root, "link"));
const entry = join(root, "entry.ts");
const r = await Bun.build({
  entrypoints: [entry], throw: false,
  files: { [entry]: `import "./link/file.ts";`, [join(root, "link/file.ts")]: `console.log("MEM_key");` },
});
console.log(r.success ? (await r.outputs[0].text()).match(/(MEM|DISK)_\w+/g) : r.logs.map(l => l.message));

A review of the last three commits found four places where a build
changed that should not change:

- The default root counted an absolute entry point at the path of a
  `./` key as "in `files`", but that entry point goes to the disk
  resolver. `is_written_as_key` now asks what the entry point lookup
  asks, so the root is the directory of the entry point, as on main.
- After `process.chdir()` between the call and the build, the output of a
  `./` key was named by a path from the new cwd. The linker now takes
  the path from the cwd only while the cwd of the call is the cwd.
- `FileMap::file_beside` joined a relative importer onto the cwd of the
  call. Main uses the cwd at build time, and so does the disk resolver.
  It is main's code again.
- The specifiers `.` and `..` can be names of keys. The key text comes
  first for them again.

The docs say what an entrypoint must be to get a key.
