Hmmmm, it's slightly orthogonal to the spec discussion, but I wonder whether, in the future, we would like to remove the suffix-removal functionality from the Prometheus receiver.
One thing that caught my attention a bit further below is:
The TYPE metadata MUST also be added to the OTLP [metric.metadata][metricMetadata]
under theprometheus.typekey (e.g.prometheus.type="unknown").
Have we implemented that? I might have missed this completely in the implementation

Yep! open-telemetry/opentelemetry-collector-contrib#32605 It was a few years ago at this point, but it has been quite helpful in a few cases to have it stored in metric metadata. |

Fixes #4743
Changes
Remove configuration from the transformation spec, and stabilize the section. The collector's prometheus receiver will likely remove its configuration to trim_metric_suffixes, hence why it says that the name SHOULD NOT be altered.
