Summary

seed-derived-data.yml runs on every push to main. Its first seed pool (SEED_POOL_1) is the only pool that publishes the app-host test product. Pull-request compile admission and E2E dispatches adopt that product instead of compiling it (reuse_app_host_products.py, "Reuse exact compatible compiled products"). Under today's 6 vCPU pull-request pool, SEED_POOL_1 resolved to its 12 vCPU sibling, blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-26. That label hasn't started a job since 2026-10-28 20:32Z. In the last 100 nightly.yml runs (back to 2026-10-29 06:18Z), 0 of the 10 jobs that asked for it got a runner. Main's classic nightly run 40834485210 has waited since 07:47Z on it (#27444). Here, every seed (blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-26) job since 2026-10-28 23:28Z was cancelled or is still queued. So main published no app-host product, and every consumer missed it and compiled.

SEED_POOL_1 is now admission's own pool, the same expression as SEED_POOL_2. seed_decide.py drops the duplicate (test_order_is_kept_and_duplicates_dropped), so the pool seeds once and publishes. Today the matrix is [blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-26, blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-15], plus the trusted pool when CI_SEED_TRUSTED_POOL is set.

Consumers of the published product:

  • ci-macos.yml compile admission (pull requests and main's full suite)
  • test-e2e.yml dispatches

Both find the product through reuse_app_host_products.py. It trusts this workflow's seed (<pool>) job by name with any matrix suffix (names_compile_job). Its contract hashes product inputs, Xcode, SDK, arch, tools and the build path, but no runner size ("a 6 and a 12 vCPU runner ... name one product"). A product built on 6 vCPU is therefore adopted the same way, and no consumer needs 12 vCPU.

What a 12 vCPU admission loses: its own j12 DerivedData seed. When the pull-request picker sends admission to 12 vCPU, seed_derived_data.py (nearest_of_any_width) first takes an older j12 seed if one is within 50 commits, and then the j6 seed. Old j12 seeds leave that window in about a day. That costs some re-emitted modules (run 36043267820 measured the reverse direction), but it's better than a seed that never runs. SEEDED_JOB_WIDTHS doesn't change, so existing j12 seeds can still be found.

Other MACOS_RUNNER_PR values behave as before. Unset or macOS 15 gives blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-15. An owned label gives that label. In both cases SEED_POOL_1 already equalled SEED_POOL_2 on base.

Known gaps:

  • On the first pushes after this lands, a pool that skips because its inputs are seeded has no product yet. The 6 vCPU seeds never published one. The next push that changes app inputs publishes it.
  • The comment at seed_derived_data.py:106 still describes a 12 vCPU seed.

Testing

Regression: python3 tests/test_seed_derived_data.py.

  • The new test_the_product_publisher_seeds_on_a_label_with_capacity evaluates the seed pools for four MACOS_RUNNER_PR values: 6 vCPU macOS 26, macOS 15, an owned label and unset. For each, it checks that no pool is 12 vCPU and that the publisher equals the pool that pull-request admission runs on.
  • Two existing tests pinned the 12 vCPU publisher: test_every_pool_admission_compiles_on_gets_a_seed_of_its_width, and test_the_seed_pool_differs_from_admission_only_in_runner_size, which is now test_the_publishing_seed_pool_is_admission_s_own_pool. They now pin admission's pool.
  • On 0ebffdf (test only), the three tests fail. On the head, they pass.

Observed / Not run

Observed, run locally on the head, all pass:

  • test_seed_derived_data.py, test_seed_decide.py, test_reuse_app_host_products.py and test_ci_canonical_build_root.py.
  • test_classic_nightly_build_runner.py and test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py.
  • test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py and test_ci_queue_janitor.py.
  • test_runner_label_policy.py, test_ci_runs_on_values.py and test_ci_no_github_hosted_macos.py.
  • test_ci_pull_request_caches_are_read_only.py and test_ci_workflow_concurrency.py.
  • The signing keychain guard and test_ci_production_secrets_protected_env.py.
  • test_ci_repo_variable_defaults.py, test_ci_cloud_overflow_switch.py and test_ci_change_areas.py.
  • test_ci_e2e_compilation_cache.py, test_e2e_sibling_build.py, test_run_e2e.py and test_ci_timing_readout.py.
  • tests/test_ci_test_compilation_cache_seed.sh, tests/test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh and tests/test_nightly_universal_build.sh.
  • actionlint 1.7.7 (SHELLCHECK_OPTS=-S warning) on seed-derived-data.yml: clean.

test_ci_owned_pool_sources.py fails 1 check, the same way on origin/main. That check reads the feat-cmux-next tree, so this PR doesn't cause it.

Not run: a seed-derived-data.yml run on main with this change, and a pull request that adopts a product published from 6 vCPU. The product contract was only read, not exercised end to end.

lawrencecchen added 6 commits October 29, 2026 14:23
pick-classic-sign-runner (nightly.yml) and the DEV daily's runner pick give
the signing, verify and delta jobs a label and a re-run alternate. With
6 vCPU moving the alternate is 12 vCPU, and with 6 vCPU stalled the pick
itself is 12 vCPU. That label started no job from 2026-10-28 20:32Z; main's
run 40834485210 held build-sign-notarize-nightly on it from 07:47Z after a
re-run took the alternate. Fails until the next commit.
classic_nightly_build_runner.py takes ONLY (a candidate label or size): that
label is both `cloud` and `alternate`, whatever the queue snapshot says.
pick-classic-sign-runner (nightly.yml) and the DEV daily's runner pick set
ONLY 6vcpu, so neither the first pick (6 vCPU stalled) nor a re-run's
alternate sends signing, verify or delta jobs to the 12 vCPU macOS 26 label,
which started no job from 2026-10-28 20:32Z. main's run 40834485210 held
build-sign-notarize-nightly there from 07:47Z after a re-run took the 12 vCPU
alternate. The snapshot cannot see that label's missing capacity while
nothing waits on it.

The labels stay Blacksmith-only literals; the runs-on expressions do not
change. tests/test_classic_nightly_build_runner.py (previous commit) fails
on the base and passes here.
…ith-12vcpu-macos-26

build-nightly-app's picker (pick-nightly-app-runner) puts 12 vCPU first, so
with no snapshot or both queues moving its `cloud` is 12 vCPU, and its
runs-on literal is 12 vCPU. refresh-test-compilation-cache seeds the 12 vCPU
sibling of the 6 vCPU pull-request pool. That label started no job from
2026-10-28 20:32Z. The guards pin 6 vCPU; they fail until the next commit.
…u-macos-26

pick-nightly-app-runner sets ONLY 6vcpu, so when the trusted mini is busy or
offline, and on every later attempt, build-nightly-app takes 6 vCPU, not its
picker's 12 vCPU default. Its runs-on literal is 6 vCPU too. The compilation
cache keys on OS, arch and toolchain, not instance size, and 6 vCPU built
this app in 8 min on 2026-10-29 (runs 40833785678, 40834485210).

refresh-test-compilation-cache seeds the pull-request pool as is
(vars.MACOS_RUNNER_PR, seed-derived-data.yml's SEED_POOL_2) instead of its
12 vCPU sibling.

blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-26 started no job from 2026-10-28 20:32Z. Stacked on
the ONLY knob of #27444.
… not 12 vCPU

seed-derived-data.yml's SEED_POOL_1 publishes the app-host product that
pull-request admission and E2E dispatches adopt. Under a 6 vCPU pull-request
pool it is blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-26, which started no job from
2026-10-28 20:32Z, so main published no product. The guards now want
admission's pool. They fail until the next commit.
…vCPU

SEED_POOL_1, the pool that alone publishes the app-host product, was the
12 vCPU sibling of the 6 vCPU pull-request pool. blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-26
started no job from 2026-10-28 20:32Z; every seed job there since 23:28Z was
cancelled or still queued, so main published no product and every pull
request and E2E dispatch that adopts it (reuse_app_host_products.py) compiled
instead. SEED_POOL_1 is now admission's own pool, the SEED_POOL_2 expression;
seed_decide.py runs a duplicate pool once. The product contract names no
runner size, so consumers adopt it unchanged. A 12 vCPU admission now falls
back to the 6 vCPU seed.

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.

CI fast guards failed on 3c27f1a310 (https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/40896030283). It does not block the merge; a red guard merged into main breaks it for every open PR.

Validate that the persistent-pool rescue watches every owned-pool workflow (red on main too, not this PR)

Main has failed this step since #27383 by @teamleaderleo (self-merged) (#27415). Merge main again once the fix lands there.

Agents: python3 scripts/ci/guard_attribution.py fix applies the mechanical fixes locally.

Review (independent subagent, correctness first): SHIP at 3c27f1a

Scope: this PR's own commits 0ebffdf and 3c27f1a. The four commits before them belong to #27444 and #27448, which have their own receipts.

  • Publishing: SEED_POOL_1 is now the same text as SEED_POOL_2. seed_decide.decide() keeps the first copy of a duplicate pool and keeps the order, so when the publisher pool builds, it is in the matrix under exactly the publisher name. The stage, package and upload steps follow from it. The concurrency group seed-derived-data-<pool> (plus -far) is the one the 6 vCPU pool already used. cancel-in-progress: false means a running publisher always finishes.
  • Consumers of app-host-products-v1-: ci-macos.yml admission, test-e2e.yml, reuse_app_host_products.py, app_host_test_rerun.py and ui_tests_dispatch.py. Trust needs a push to main and a job named seed (...) with any pool. The app-host contract hashes no runner size; only the Release contract hashes the runner. No consumer needs a 12 vCPU producer.
  • DerivedData: a 6 vCPU admission finds its own j6 seed. A 12 vCPU admission takes an older j12 seed within 50 commits, then j6. main-compile-probe.yml (dispatch only) requires its own width.
  • Tests pass on the head: test_seed_derived_data.py (67), test_seed_decide.py (22), test_reuse_app_host_products.py, test_ci_canonical_build_root.py, test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py (250), test_ci_e2e_compilation_cache.py, test_ci_workflow_concurrency.py, test_ci_test_compilation_cache_seed.sh and test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh. On 0ebffdf, 3 of the 67 tests in test_seed_derived_data.py fail.
  • Non-blocking: the first skipped pushes after this lands have no product until a push that changes app inputs. The comment at seed_derived_data.py:106 is out of date. Both are now in the body.

Not merged and no ready-to-land: held for Lawrence. Merge order: #27444, #27448, then this PR.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates macOS runner selection across development, nightly, and derived-data workflows. Classic nightly selection can pin both Blacksmith outputs to one candidate. Workflow tests check the 6-vCPU selections and seed-pool alignment.

Changes: macOS CI runner selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Explicit runner override
scripts/ci/classic_nightly_build_runner.py
A valid ONLY candidate now sets both Blacksmith outputs to that candidate, regardless of FIRST or snapshot-based routing.
Development and signing runner picks
.github/workflows/cmux-next-dev-daily.yml, .github/workflows/nightly.yml, tests/test_classic_nightly_build_runner.py
The development and nightly signing pickers select the 6-vCPU class. Tests check signing picker outputs across snapshots and attempts.
Nightly build and cache-seed runners
.github/workflows/nightly.yml, tests/test_classic_nightly_build_runner.py, tests/test_nightly_universal_build.sh
The nightly app-build picker and fallback use 6-vCPU runners. The test-cache seed matrix no longer remaps the 6-vCPU macOS 26 pool to its 12-vCPU sibling. Tests check the picker, fallback, and runner labels.
Derived-data seed pools
.github/workflows/seed-derived-data.yml, tests/test_seed_derived_data.py
The first seed pool uses the configured pull-request runner or its fallback, without substituting the 12-vCPU macOS 26 pool. Tests cover configured and unset runner values.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes GitHub Actions runner-label selection, nightly seed-pool expressions, the classic nightly picker, and related tests. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderer admission, input routing, snapshots, authentication, idempotency, revision fences, or attachment leases. The cloud persistent-session rule is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub workflow files, Python CI scripts/tests, and a shell test. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files, so it introduces no production Swift blocking or timing-based synchronization.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only CI workflows, a Python runner picker, and related tests. The scoped browser automation files and policy tests are unchanged, and no added line routes or modifies a browser.* command, WebKit wait, main-actor path, or socket-worker router.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub Actions workflows, a Python CI helper, and tests. The authoritative diff contains no production Swift changes and no agent-history, transcript, JSONL, workspace-scan, or synchronous main-actor load changes. The check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflow files, CI Python logic, and tests. It introduces no production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript change, and no cache substitution in a persistence, history, undo, or snapshot path.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

The PR does not introduce or worsen a hacky sleep. The only production script change adds the ONLY routing branch in scripts/ci/classic_nightly_build_runner.py; its existing sleep(look_seconds) polling loop is unchanged from the base. The added sleep=lambda seconds: None calls are deterministic test scaffolding. Workflow YAML timing is out of scope, and the remaining changes only update runner labels and tests.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes runner labels, workflow expressions, tests, and the Python picker. The picker addition uses a fixed-size candidate tuple and a dictionary lookup, then skips snapshot routing when ONLY is set. It adds no nested scalable-collection scan, per-target rescan, sort/filter hot path, in-memory join, or slower algorithm for user-owned records. Existing runner-list scans are unchanged and are not worsened by this diff.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

PASS: The authoritative pull-request diff changes only YAML, Python, and shell files. It contains no Swift files or Swift code, so it does not introduce or expand the legacy Swift async patterns covered by this check.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub Actions workflows, Python CI code, and tests. The reviewed diff contains no Swift or SwiftPM package files, so it does not introduce a Swift package-boundary violation.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only runner-selection logic, workflow comments, and related tests. The authoritative diff contains no Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, Xcode project, or SwiftPM dependency changes. Therefore the SwiftPM lockfile rules are not violated.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

No changed file is Swift. The PR changes workflow YAML, Python, and shell test files only. The diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, file logging, or Logger declarations, so the Swift logging failure conditions do not apply.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes only GitHub Actions workflows, a CI runner-picker script, and tests. Its changed output is limited to CI labels and runner diagnostics consumed by workflow outputs and job summaries. No changed text reaches a cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API. The provider names, labels, run IDs, and configuration names are in internal CI/operator diagnostics, which the rule permits. No secrets, credentials, personal data, or payload dumps are introduced.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

PASS — The PR changes CI workflow routing, runner-selection code, and tests only. The diff adds or edits operational comments, configuration labels, and debug/step-summary text for CI; it does not introduce Swift UI text, app or web localization entries, API copy, rendered markdown, changelog text, or other end-user content covered by the internationalization rule.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only three YAML files, three Python files, and one shell test. The diff contains no Swift or SwiftUI changes and adds none of the state or layout patterns covered by the rule.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only workflow YAML, Python, and shell test files. The reviewed diff contains no Swift files or Swift architecture changes, so the Swift architectural rethink failure conditions do not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed diff changes only GitHub workflow YAML, Python CI code, and shell/Python tests. It contains no Swift changes and no standalone cmux-owned window code, so the auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes only hand-written workflow configuration, Python source, and tests: seven existing paths under .github/workflows/, scripts/ci/, and tests/. No local output, generated log, screenshot, recording, temporary directory, checkout, cache, build output, DerivedData, download, or broad artifact directory enters source control.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

The pull request changes seven workflow, Python, and shell-test files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files under any production Sources/ path, so it cannot introduce a prohibited test or debug seam in production Swift source.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It includes a detailed Summary, Testing section, Observed / Not run details, and Changelog entry. The Proof and Checklist sections are omitted, but these omissions are non-critical for this CI-only change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 4 files. A valid ONLY forces both cloud and alternate to one label, bypassing the existing stalled-queue selection and removing the rerun's route to another candidate.

Nightly signing or development Mac jobs can remain queued through reruns instead of moving to the available pool.

This can occur when: The 6-vCPU queue stalls or loses capacity after the pick while the 12-vCPU queue has recovered and is taking jobs.

Do not skip the sole product publisher without an artifact check.

When an unchanged seed predates the pool’s publisher role, seed_decide.py can skip the only publisher after duplicate removal. The saved-seed predicate does not check product-artifact availability. Artifact expiration only makes the consumer miss; it does not change the predicate or force a publisher run. PR and E2E consumers can compile instead of reusing the product.

As of Python 2.3 you can specify how long a socket should wait for a response before timing out. This can be useful in applications which have to fetch web pages. By default the socket module has no timeout and can hang. Currently, the socket timeout is not exposed at the http.client or urllib.request levels. However, you can set the default timeout globally for all sockets using

    import socket
    import urllib.request

    # timeout in seconds
    timeout = 10
    socket.setdefaulttimeout(timeout)

    # this call to urllib.request.urlopen now uses the default timeout
    # we have set in the socket module
    req = urllib.request.Request(&#39;http://www.voidspace.org.uk&#39;)
    response = urllib.request.urlopen(req)

In my case I have to use a proxy to access the internet at work. If you attempt to fetch localhost URLs through this proxy it blocks them. IE is set to use the proxy, which urllib picks up on. In order to test scripts with a localhost server, I have to prevent urllib from using the proxy.

<title>socket — Low-level networking interface — Python 3.14.7 documentation</title>
<location>https://docs.python.org/3/library/socket.html?highlight=settimeout</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; This only affects how Python represents e.g. the return value of `socket.getpeername()` but not the actual OS resource. ... Set a timeout on blocking socket operations. ... If a non-zero value is given, subsequent socket operations will raise a `timeout` exception if the timeout period value has elapsed before the operation has completed.

Changed in version 3.5: The method now waits until the connection completes instead of raising an `InterruptedError` exception if the connection is interrupted by a signal, the signal handler doesn’t raise an exception and the socket is blocking or has a timeout (see the PEP 475 for the rationale).

Availability: not WASI.

connect_ex(address)¶

Like `connect(address)`, but return an error indicator instead of raising an exception for errors returned by the C-level `connect()` call (other problems, such as “host not found,” can still raise exceptions). The error indicator is `0` if the operation succeeded, otherwise the value of the `errno` variable. This is useful to support, for example, asynchronous connects.

Raises an auditing event `socket.connect` with arguments `self`, `address`.

Availability: not WASI.

detach()¶

Put the socket object into closed state without actually closing the underlying file descriptor. The format of the address returned depends on the address family — see Socket families. On some systems this function is not supported.

getsockname()¶

Return the socket’s own address. This is useful to find out the port number of an IPv4/v6 socket, for instance. The format of the address returned depends on the address family — see Socket families.

getsockopt(level, optname[, buflen])¶

Return the value of the given socket option (see the Unix man page getsockopt(2)). The needed symbolic constants (SO_* etc.) are defined in this module. If buflen is absent, an integer option is assumed and its integer value is returned by the function. If buflen is present, it specifies the maximum length of the buffer used to receive the option in, and this buffer is returned as a bytes object. It is up to the caller to decode the contents of the buffer (see the optional built-in module `struct` for a way to decode C structures encoded as byte strings).

Availability: not WASI.

getblocking()¶

Return `True` if socket is in blocking mode, `False` if in non-blocking.

This is equivalent to checking `socket.gettimeout() != 0`.

Added in version 3.7.

gettimeout()¶

Return the timeout in seconds (float) associated with socket operations, or `None` if no timeout is set. This reflects the last call to `setblocking()` or `settimeout()`.

settimeout(value)¶

Set a timeout on blocking socket operations. The value argument can be a nonnegative real number expressing seconds, or `None`. If a non-zero value is given, subsequent socket operations will raise a `timeout` exception if the timeout period value has elapsed before the operation has completed. If zero is given, the socket is put in non-blocking mode. If `None` is given, the socket is put in blocking mode.

For further information, please consult the notes on socket timeouts.

Changed in version 3.7: The method no longer toggles `SOCK_NONBLOCK` flag on `socket.type`.

setsockopt(level, optname, value: int | Buffer)¶
setsockopt(level, optname, None, optlen: int)

Set the value of the given socket option (see the Unix manual page setsockopt(2)). The needed symbolic constants are defined in this module (SO_* etc. &lt;socket-unix-constants&gt;). The value can be an integer, `None` or a bytes-like object representing a buffer. In the latter case it is up to the caller to ensure that the bytestring contains the proper bits (see the optional built-in module `struct` for a way to encode C structures as bytestrings). When value is set to `None`, optlen argument is required. It’s equivalent to calling `setsockopt()` C function with `optval=NULL` and `optlen=optlen`.

Changed in version 3.5: Writable bytes-like object is now accepted.

Changed in version 3.6: setsockopt(level, optname, None, optlen: int) form added.

Availability: not WASI.

shutdown(how)¶

Shut down one or both halves of the connection. If how is `SHUT_RD`, further receives are disallowed. If how is `SHUT_WR`, further sends are disallowed. If how is `SHUT_RDWR`, further sends and receives are disallowed.

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 days ago; * In blocking mode, operations block until complete or the system returns an error (such as connection timed out). ... The `connect()` operation is also subject to the timeout setting, and in general it is recommended to call `settimeout()` before calling `connect()` or pass a timeout parameter to `create_connection()`. However, the system network stack may also return a connection timeout error of its own regardless of any Python socket timeout setting.

socket.makefile(mode=&#39;r&#39;, buffering=None, *, encoding=None, errors=None, newline=None)¶

Return a file object associated with the socket. The exact returned type depends on the arguments given to `makefile()`. These arguments are interpreted the same way as by the built-in `open()` function, except the only supported mode values are `&#39;r&#39;` (default), `&#39;w&#39;` and `&#39;b&#39;`.

The socket must be in blocking mode; it can have a timeout, but the file object’s internal buffer may end up in an inconsistent state if a timeout occurs.

Closing the file object returned by `makefile()` won’t close the original socket unless all other file objects have been closed and `socket.close()` has been called on the socket object.

Note

On Windows, the file-like object created by `makefile()` cannot be used where a file object with a file descriptor is expected, such as the stream arguments of `subprocess.Popen()`.

socket.recv(bufsize[, flags])¶

Receive data from the socket. The return value is a bytes object representing the data received. The maximum amount of data to be received at once is specified by bufsize. A returned empty bytes object indicates that the client has disconnected. See the Unix manual page recv(2) for the meaning of the optional argument flags; it defaults to zero.

## Notes on socket timeouts¶

A socket object can be in one of three modes: blocking, non-blocking, or timeout. Sockets are by default always created in blocking mode, but this can be changed by calling `setdefaulttimeout()`.

  * In blocking mode, operations block until complete or the system returns an error (such as connection timed out).

  * In non-blocking mode, operations fail (with an error that is unfortunately system-dependent) if they cannot be completed immediately: functions from the `select` module can be used to know when and whether a socket is available for reading or writing.

  * In timeout mode, operations fail if they cannot be completed within the timeout specified for the socket (they raise a `timeout` exception) or if the system returns an error.

Note

At the operating system level, sockets in timeout mode are internally set in non-blocking mode. Also, the blocking and timeout modes are shared between file descriptors and socket objects that refer to the same network endpoint. </excerpt>

## Proxies¶

urllib will auto-detect your proxy settings and use those. This is through the `ProxyHandler`, which is part of the normal handler chain when a proxy setting is detected. Normally that’s a good thing, but there are occasions when it may not be helpful [5]. One way to do this is to setup our own `ProxyHandler`, with no proxies defined. This is done using similar steps to setting up a Basic Authentication handler:

    &gt;&gt;&gt; proxy_support = urllib.request.ProxyHandler({})
    &gt;&gt;&gt; opener = urllib.request.build_opener(proxy_support)
    &gt;&gt;&gt; urllib.request.install_opener(opener)

Note

Currently `urllib.request` does not support fetching of `https` locations through a proxy. However, this can be enabled by extending urllib.request as shown in the recipe [6].

Note

`HTTP_PROXY` will be ignored if a variable `REQUEST_METHOD` is set; see the documentation on `getproxies()`.

## Sockets and Layers¶

The Python support for fetching resources from the web is layered. urllib uses the `http.client` library, which in turn uses the socket library.

As of Python 2.3 you can specify how long a socket should wait for a response before timing out. This can be useful in applications which have to fetch web pages. By default the socket module has no timeout and can hang. Currently, the socket timeout is not exposed at the http.client or urllib.request levels. However, you can set the default timeout globally for all sockets using

    import socket
    import urllib.request

    timeout = 10
    socket.setdefaulttimeout(timeout)

    # this call to urllib.request.urlopen now uses the default timeout
    # we have set in the socket module
    req = urllib.request.Request(&#39;http://www.voidspace.org.uk&#39;)
    response = urllib.request.urlopen(req)

Skip the snapshot when ONLY determines the label.

When ONLY is valid, the picker still fetches the snapshot first at classic_nightly_build_runner.py:193-206. A slow response can consume the two-minute picker-step budget even though lines 207-209 ignore the snapshot. The timed-out step leaves empty outputs, so downstream jobs use their literal Blacksmith fallback.
